    While the VGU initiative in League of Legends has been successful for the most part, there are still a relevant amount of reworks that have aged poorly over the years, leaving them in either a frustrating or unsatisfactory state. Today we'll be discussing some of the "bad" reworks of League of Legends, and go through why they didn't do so well.

    Lmao, i literally just had a conversation with a friend about how they tried to fix yoricks uninteractive design... by reworking him. Yet he's still as (if not a little more) uninteractive than before. He's less of a lane bully i suppose, but it barely matters when you win lane against yorick anyways since he will just end up splitpushing all game.

      Every Yorick player, no matter mastery, just farms up ghouls and chucks E at you, chunking your HP if you’re not able to shield or heal.
      And you’re 100% right when you say he’s less interactive. All Yorick players either sit under turret and chuck E at you, or they free farm and chuck E at you. He always outsustains you. Unless you’re Nasus.

Pre rework Yorick was kind of a duelist summoner with great splitpush potential, but after the rework he became a juggernaut with the worst ult AI I've ever seen. • @JustinKork
    @JustinKork 9 дней назад +6

    Some people might love Fiddle VGU, but kit-wise he's clunkier than ever. I used to trade all day with QWE, but now it's a no-go with no-ult. The higher the elo, the less likely you're able to get the ultimate off in an effective manner because of vision and knowledge. Back in the day, I could E bounce and melt their team over walls when they come to clear vision prior to objective fights.
    The new E can cancel a channel/silence faster, and has more cast-range, but pales in comparison to what his old one did. by late-game I had teams staying worlds-apart from each other to avoid the bounces.

      @Skarfar90 3 дня назад +1

      @@alexcat6685 Absolutely. I was never a fiddle player myself, but he was fun to pick up and play now and then. His old kit was much simpler, but fully functional, especially in 1v1 scenarios. The old W single-target drain was much better sustain than his current AoE drain. I do like the new passive, where he basically gets a free ward+sweeper combo, but the rest of his kit never felt right to me.
      His old kit with the bouncing crow that silenced, and the single-target fear was adequate enough to use in teamfights. You simply feared away the most dangerous enemy, and made the fight a lot more favorable to your team, also by bouncing crows, silencing the enemy.
      Even if you were behind, you were still a good use to your team. Unlike today's version, if you fall behind on him, you are being a huge detriment to your team.

    yeah yoricks rework was a pretty tragic failure, its an extremely cool design, but they changed him from a lane bully that essentially never dies, to a splitpushing monster that statchecks anyone in the game if he has ult up, and his ult doesnt even have that long of a cooldown compared to other champs that are SUPPOSED to have more powerful ults, but in reality dont (like for real my boi has that 160/130/100 cooldown and he often builds a lot of cdr, so its usually at like a 70-60 sec cooldown when you have 4 items, whereas shen literally has to take ultimate hunter to get any value out of his ult more than once per game, which does less than yoricks ult
    but also just a lil personal opinion on asol, they could literally just swap asol w and smolder e, then apply the stars on new asol flight (smolder e), it makes sense, it makes him more reliable to play, it doesnt force him to go one direction only and be countered by walking to the side, where on the other hand smolders e is only really needed for him to either make an escape or catch up to someone while he weaves in q's and w's while auto attacking, meaning he would still benefit pretty massively even if the flights were swapped

He was fun, powerful, consistent and skill expressive - except for his ult having nothing to do with the rest of his kit and is dogshit in anywhere but highest pro, and the reward for full-iteming being blown up by a yasuo/adc with just half of your money. It's absolutely disgusting how little Ryze does compared to current Asol despite being arguably much harder to play, even Brand - who punishes enemies for piling on top of him - even Cass, who has much better kiting and single target damage. I just wish he could do anything else on ult - get a massive shield, spell vamp, even constant mana regen for a short time, move speed/burn after each spell flux - but he just doesn't do enough at all and feels so underwhelming. Riot should really do something about such an iconic champion being low pick rate despite having the potential to be the Garen of Mages

    I don't think Old Irelia was as stat checky as you're saying. Her E needing timing and understanding the fight to know if a slow is as good as it gets or knowing if you should wait for the stun was a cool interaction. Positioning yourself to ult changed a lot the amount of heal you'd receive and her W having duration made her open for clear windows when she was vulnerable. She also had 2 play styles on laning phase depending if you wanted long or shorter trades with one leveling E and the other W which is pretty interesting IMO.
    There is nothing wrong at being an auto attacker besides of what Riot seems to think and I honestly think old Irelia was more nuanced than current Jax, a "similar" champion.

      Yeah it’s really stupid, especially on a scaling champion that can kill you in 2-3 autos. I also hate Rengar’s W, Briar’s E and Bel’Veth’s E, etc, for the same reason. It feels really dumb getting point-and-click one shot by someone while you’re not even allowed to figh back, and often you have to burn Flash or Ult just to survive, while those champions lose nothing. It’s just terrible game design. Gwen W is another I hate, both for the fact it blocks all exterior damage, but it also grants her a lot of bonus resistances, and with her already high base resistance scaling, she becomes a tank with only Steelcaps (not to mention the amount of healing she gets from her passive, which always deals 70% of her total damage as %HP regardless of how many abilities she misses. Seriously fuck that champ’s design)

    easy fix on aurelion sol: (Edit: i wrote this comment before watching the aurelion sol part XD)
    keep his orbiting stars and old W but merge it into one ability, where at lvl 0 he has 0 stars orbitting him, and level up gives him one, 3 lvl 2, and 5th 3
    keep his new flight, it's fine
    keep his new passive
    keep his new E and R
    he really doesn't need his stupid breath attack
    make it so if you hit 3 orbs you deal extra damage but it works in a way that if you miss, the 3 stack passive resets so it adds a reward to positioning good, keeps his old dynamic playstyle while being useful with the new spells

    • @megantheestalin
      @megantheestalin 8 дней назад

      the reason why they never added more stars for old asol is because it does wonky things for your DPS. if he goes from one star to two it literally doubles his damage output for example. it makes for extremely sharp and frustrating powerspikes that are hard to balance around.

    I've mostly been playing close-quarter playstyles in League since Season 3, I'll just yap for champs and reworks that I reached Mastery 6 or higher for those who'd like a long read.
    1. As long as there exists a way for Ryze to scale both ways between AP and Mana, he's never going to find a healthy spot; either he's an unkillable battlemage w/ tank+mana items while still AoE-gunning your team, or too weak to do either.
    2. ASol was unique and fun back then, a battlemage with very satisfying "boops" with his star orbits-but is overshadowed by how depressing it is to fight any champ that dashes within his "no-no zone". Now, he's constantly spewing fire (even though lore-wise he views biting as "uncouth", and insists that stardragons only reserve their breaths for a dire situation or a grand finale). Vars is correct, he just needed abilities to consistently force enemies into his orbit like his current E+R.
    3. Goodness, it's so polarizing to play Kayle. Back then you're a part-time ranged AP Tryndamere. Now, you're susceptible to being bullied even by a Nasus/Dr. Mundo until reaching Lvl 13 with 2-3 items. It's even worse when you realize that she can't go ideally anywhere else but Toplane if you really want to reach Lv16 ASAP.
    4. I miss Volibear Q flip and E knockback. I know, they had to differentiate his Q from Singed E, plus apparently a lot of his teammates' skill issues are exposed by that displacement (missing skillshots when Voli flips the target)... But having an AoE cc, even just a short one, just makes so much sense on a godbear. Also helps with his job as a tank/juggernaut, but Riot said "Nope we goin' Ohmwrecker turret diving for 2 seconds."
    5. Mordekaiser = AP Darius now. Made him more satisfying to play? Probably w/ isolated Q, but that's it. Instead of having the ability to command the dead enemy, he just gets THEIR HIGHEST BONUS STATS. Effective? Yes. Respects either his original or his new identity? Nope.
    6. Skarner is good now. A bit too good in terms of CC (and also with his poke, as evident in pro play). However, now that his kit doesn't scale with anything major but HP and maybe Ability Haste, he's now even more reliant on having decent teammates than ever before. Also he's now a xenophobic boomer, lol.
    7. As a Lv32 Aatrox main: STOP SAYING IT WAS BETTER THEN: HE WAS A BAD MASTER YI WITH A G.A. PASSIVE UNTIL TWO PATCHES BEFORE HIS REWORK. HE'S NOT RIVEN 2.0 EITHER, HE NEEDS PREP AND SPACING BEFORE ALL-INS; WHEREAS SHE'S GOOD TO RUSHDOWN WHENEVER. Do I miss the revive? Sometimes, but it's not necessary and not as much as I miss Old Aatrox E being a unique narrowing skillshot, ALONG WITH A FEW PATCHES AGO WHEN HIS CHAIN USED TO PULL CONSISTENTLY. XD

    Bias up front, I was one of the few people who old asol really clicked with. But new asol sucks balls. He's like veigar ult became a champion. Not fun to play as or against. Personally, I think all old asol really needed was passive ghosting. The most frustrating part of playing him was minions pushing you out of range during ur w. Getting rid of that would've made him tolerable for the people who loved him, less intimidating to pick up as a new player, and most importantly wouldn't mean getting rid of a playstyle you cannot find anywhere else. Don't get me wrong, he'd still have a reasonably low pickrate, but there's 150+ champs in league, there's obviously room on that roster for niche champions.

    The problem with the Kayle rework is that they took a champion who had four mediocre but fine abilities and a mediocre but fine passive and gave her four slightly less mediocre abilities and a completely awful passive. If Kayle didn't have her terrible passive she'd still be fine: she'd still have her build capabilities of being played as a top laner, ADC, or even a weird hybrid support akin to Senna. But currently Kayle doesn't do anything until she hits level 6 which means she's locked out of any lane other than top.

While Mordekaiser had that happen to him twice. • @TheSorrowfulAngel
    @TheSorrowfulAngel 7 дней назад

    FOr most of the "failed" reworks, it just felt like they needed more time to cook.
    Another sizeable midscope would help those champs out a LOT.
    With Yorick, for example, the biggest problem is that his Ghouls almost feel like a seperate part of his kit. The thing that makes lethality yorick fun is that his ghouls feel fun - and ghouls are the coolest part of his kit. A proper follow up to yorick would be trying to combine his ghoul and juggernaut playstyles. He also has just aged badly as splitpushing as a strategy has aged kinda horribly.
    Some champs, like Galio, just need a proper touch up - less than a midscope, but more than a somewhat involved patchnote. All those lukewarm number changes they do to him dont solve any problems satisfyingly.
    But there are also some examples of the rework just introducing a lot of(actually pretty obvious) problems: Kayle is a good example. Hyper latregame focused champs do not work well in league, as they are too polarizing. Riot realized that and pulled a lot of lategame power out of kayle in favor of midgame power... but at that point, they shouldve asked themselves "Cant we do something better with Kayle, now that being a lvl 16 carry isnt the only thing she can do?".
    I still find Akali to be just egregious. I mean, she is at her worst in toplane, but she has the big problem of having all cards in hand - a good enough akali "outplays" all of her weaknesses(Think I even heard a rioter recently talking about that) - that's a design fail, cause that will forever dictate her balance state.

  • @Totama1996
    @Totama1996 9 дней назад +4

    I disagree with irelias rework mostly because i think you missed one main thing about reworks.
    Those old champs were eating their respective creative space.
    Lets use Aatrox as an example. Greatsword weilding being of death is a hugely applicable thematic that a lot of people would enjoy. But does old Aatrox feel like hes weilding a greatsword? Not really, but he was still eating the thematic space. Nocturn is another example of this. He doesnt really hit the horror of the shadows thematic with his kit, and if he was reworked they might not preserve parts of his current kit just for nostalgia when that would defeat the purpose of making an actual horrors of the dark themed champ.
    To my point irelia feels way more like a blade dancer now where as before she felt more like a muscle brawler akin to Vi or Jarvan.
    But thats just my 3 cents.

    • @obsessedwithcats
      @obsessedwithcats 9 дней назад +1

      Yeah I love Irelia’s rework too, it adds a lot more skill expression and counterplay to her kit. The only issue is her passive + Bork absolutely deleting you when she shouldn’t be strong enough to, I wish she had less on-hit damage and relied more on needing to hit her abilities or something. Old Asol but with Singularity on his Q would've been so good man... I don't care that we lose a stun, the slow and pull is way more fun to use and would work perfectly with his orbiting stars. I also would've kept his old ult, maybe reduce the range and the cooldown to give him more of a peel potential

    i think the problem with asol stars is that they would have to reduce his dmg and up his cc to account for aoe dmg and he would be turned into a sup.
    rn his q can be body blocked so it gets punished by asol and the enemy positioning

    New asol has high playrate because new asol is super easy to play and extremely stat-checky. Even low and mid elo players spam him.

    Just a silly idea, but thinking about it it might just work. With the show Arcane Rito added the paralel world feel/impression, and with Zilean and Ekko being time manipulators they can launch a new event, where a chrono disaster caused past versions of reworked champions to show up. Either have them as playable characters, or enemy, or both. Imagine old AP Sion vs today's HP harvesting hulk.

    Garen OTP: I actually think Kayle comes online a lot earlier than people give her credit for, at least she has a lot more agency than her reputation imply. She's similar to Mundo during 1-6 vs melee champs, using her poke and movespeed buff to try to gain an advantage while keeping good spacing. And once she hits 6 she basically turns into a ranged top laner making it very easy for her to farm. And she doesn't need to kill her opponent to gain a lead, simply going Even in CS for the first 10 minutes means she's gaining an advantage.
    I hate playing against Kayle because when she is played right it's relatively easy for her to have a safe easy laning phase while securing good CS. At the same time, her mere presence in game places the pressure on her opposing laner to make the most of her weak 1-6 to try to get a significant lead, and to snowball that lead enough by minute 25 to have essentially won the game, because the longer the game goes on there is always the threat that kayle will reach 1v9 scaling potential.

    I was a beast Taric main back in the day. He was so camp, with a straitgorward and easy to underestimate kit. Heck there would be times when bot lane went so well that I could go mid lane and 1v1 the Yasuo with my crazy armor. Now he's just some dork who won't shut up about his precious mountain and never has any mana. New Taric is only ever useful for abusing cheese strats
