No recommendations this week, but just wanted to say thank you for putting so much effort into your reactions/reviews! You really dive into the albums and songs you listen to and understand the way they work, as well as doing your own research. As someone who’s a MASSIVE SP fan, Mellon Collie being my favorite by them, I really appreciate that you chose to listen to the first to albums before diving into that.

This album blew minds when it came out. It blew mine. I was a young teenager listening to the standard heavy rock/metal at that time, Dokken, Metallica, Tesla to name a few.
This album changed everything. Nothing I ever heard carried the energy this album carried. It still hold up well today imo.

Pumpkins were the anti grunge band of the 90s, they were THE alternative rock band, and this album was just a peek into that. Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie are masterpieces. On a trivia note, Courtney love couldn't turn Corgan into a grunge guy so she left him and got Kurt Cobain.

Smashing Pumpkins has the same hardcore underground influences as grunge, but they came out of the Chicago scene (about two thousand miles away). Billy Corgan has a very eclectic musical background personally, and Jimmy Chamberlin is one of the most accomplished drummers of the era. Corgan once said that Courtney Love once jokingly complained to him that their (Smashing Pumpkins) first album sounded like everyone else's second album.

One of the best debut albums ever. Saw them on tour for this. Sad fact that guitar sound on this album disappears in a way because someone stole his guitar while on tour. He just got it back in the last year! He admitted to never getting the same sound again on any other guitar.

If you love these Pumpkins albums (and how could you not?), I highly recommend Jane's Addiction. Another unique singing voice, shades of light and dark, elite drummers, and guitarist Dave Navarro loves to space out as much as rock out.

Their dynamics were always awesome! My favorite parts of Gish, are the dueling guitar solos and Jimmy Chamberlin's snare rolls. When it comes to snare fills, "Bury Me," after the guitar solo. Also, "Snail," towards the end of the song. "Tristessa" also has a ridiculously cool accented double stroke roll snare fill. As for the "cosmic outros," they remind me of My Bloody Valentine, which is a band that influenced Billy Corgan quite a bit. If you haven't heard MBV's "Loveless" and "Isn't Anything" albums, you should definitely check them out. After I read a Billy Corgan interview where he mentions them, I bought their albums.

So happy you finally got around to Smashing Pumpkins, another one of my top 5 favorite bands (Deftones, The Smiths, PJ Harvey, and Faith No More being the others). Happy you decided to start at the beginning as well as this album often gets overlooked even though as you mentioned It's far more accomplished and diverse than almost any other alternative rock band from around this time but it did not break through to the mainstream right away like other acts did despite having a few minor hits (Siva, Rhinoceros, Crush). "Siamese Dream" is where they could no longer be ignored and everyone had to take notice.
They did release an EP called "Lull" before this which has a few songs not on here, as well as the song "Drown" from the Singles soundtrack are other SP songs from this era. Really looking forward to your reaction to the rest of the discography.
    Nice shirt too btw!

How they were received is an excellent question. In 1991 I was in college and friends who knew what kind of music I listened to told me frequently that I should check Smashing Pumpkins out. Soon after s few friends and I went to see Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam (no one knew much about either of them yet) open for Red Hot Chili Peppers. The records they were supporting were: Gish, Ten, and Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Smashing Pumpkins had obviously had too much drink before the show and jammed drunkenly for about 40 minutes. It did not go well. Another friend gave me Gish to listen to a week later. I finally got to hear what they sounded like and was in love. I saw them a few times after and the best show was (Siamese Dream) with Swervedriver (Mezcal Head) opening in DC. One of the best shows I've seen. People didn't really know what to make of them in 91 and really broke out in 93.

A couple other things about this album. It certainly didn't sound like anything I had ever heard before that point. It sounded completely original. I first heard it in 1992, when the Pumpkins had a song on the Singles Soundtrack called "Drown". A friend made me a copy of Gish and I was hooked from the first listen. The only other band I think is similar musically who came before them was Jane's Addiction, but that's about it. They both loved to use that hard/soft dynamic with long, interesting experimental songs. I was a Senior in High School when Gish came out, and feel like I've grown up with them. Or vice versa.

The Pumpkins, to me, never fit into that whole "grunge" category.. yeah, they had distorted guitars, but also so much sweetness and beautiful, sometimes long, arrangements. They wanted to be the biggest, best band in the world, unlike a lot of their contemporaries. They weren't afraid of looking silly by trying whatever the hell they wanted. Billy Corgan is definitely in my top 5 all time songwriters, and he's a savant with the guitar.
