- At 3,798 metres high Austria’s white giant is every bit as imposing as it is intriguing, enveloped by an aura of natural beauty that’s beyond imagination. Originally built to showcase the true delights of the Hohe Tauern National Park, and to bolster the country’s flailing economy after the First World War, the Großglockner High Alpine Road excelled all expectations bringing over 50 million tourists to the area since it opened in 1935.
Starting in Heiligenblut you initially trace your way through lush Glockner meadows as the gradient pitches up and holds its form at over double figures for the first 6km. A moment of respite gifts you an extra heartbeat to savour your surrounds before the final push, past the powerful Fensterbach waterfalls, towards the eternal ice plain of the Pasterze Glacier and the foot of the legendary Großglockner itself. Without question absolutely one of the most spectacular roads you’ll ever ride. And breathe…..
Start: Heiligenblut
Length: 16.4km
Summit: 2,369m
Elevation gain: 1,069m
Average gradient: 8.1%
Max gradient: 12%
Ridden in June

Hands down to you and especially your crew. Beautiful music and scenery that the camera crew captures is AMAZING!!
Thank you for your appreciation David.
Did it in 2019. First from Pockhorn to Hochtor & Edelweiss-spitze and later on Franz Joseph Hoche to bring out some memoirs on climbing Palavicini route ( Mt. Grossglockner north wall). Great times with climbing buddy Johny.
It was Grand Tour indeed. The best part of tour was meeting Volodya, friendly cycle traveler from Russia and ice cream in Heiligenblut with my girlfriend. Later we went to cool down by Weissensee lake.
Great weekend, super cycling and superb sightseeing.
Incredible. Best Cycling Videos for me!
Greetings from Germany, keep up your work!
For myself, the climb to the Hochtor is the most spectacular feature on this tour. At Franz-Josefs Höhe you only had the half way to the top, and the panorama is the greatest when you get out of the tunnel.
Amazing!
Another great cycling adventure!
Epic climbs with fantastic views!
Simply stunning..
WOW~~ nice scenery over there~~
Das ist freaking wunderbar
+Cornelius Maximillianus Danke schön!
truly amazimg keep pedaling sir tnx for sharing
I watch this video so often :) need to climb up there soon. very inspiring video!
So beautiful video, the best I've ever seen from Grossglockner Strasse. Can't wait till I go there, just 1,5 month left.
Just getting back on my exercise bike after a knee injury, this video reminds me why I so want to get fit and cycle, thank you for the inspiration Mike and your team, love your channel!!! Happy Christmas! 🎄🚴🌟
Happy Christmas Julia, good luck with your recovery! We have some great videos on the way to help keep you motivated. Keep the faith! Mike
Hope you are fit now and rode the Großglockner Alread
Was able to travel this route by car in October, just beautiful.
Beautiful ride, simple music and what a place...roads look wonderful, a nice small treat before Christmas I say...this had a bite in the middle with sections not going below 10%...beautiful camera work there by the team (there is a portion where Mike looks gliding across the mountain :P ) ... wonderful work ...Kudos for the brilliant work yet again @the Col Collective :)
Thank you Rahul. Have a happy holiday season my friend.
🇧🇷
+The Col Collective thanks for the fast request guys. Its always a plessure to see the new videos. Great job
Just great...
Nice video. Last Summer we were there Cycling around Austria and It was absolutely Amazing!! Thanks for sharing!!
Glossglockner ROCKS
another great video Mike, thanks so much for posting.
+gigpic we're certainly hoping to!
OUCH , looks Fantastic and hard. :)
I recall reading a report by the great Bill Bradley in the 60s of him winning at the top of this col having attacked on the cobbled hairpins when his rival kept dropping onto his smaller chainring on every hairpin. An inspiring report, especially to a cycling mad teenager !!
Ahhh, it's a Col Collective day, today!!! Yippee!
That looks a bit of a cheeky climb. I thought that we could hear you almost getting short of breath! But then I realised that Mike 'the machine' Cotty doesn't get out of breath! 😜
Ha! I just turn the microphone off when I start to hyperventilate! Tricks of the trade, mum's the word ;-)
So that's just been added to the cycling bucket list! Nice work once again MC!
You won't be disappointed! Ride the full 48km Großglockner High Alpine Road and you'll be in awe at its beauty!
Spectacular video on the spectacular road! In late June '15 it was 5 degrees at Hochtor in early July it was almost 20.
For sure, conditions can change dramatically in a matter of minutes. However good you feel, the mountains always have the final word, that's what makes them so great.
Woooow. I'm going there
worth a wait, sangkyu Mike. ^_^
Nice wide roads
Holly shit balls Mike.. That's stunning.. #addedtothelist
Das ist meine Heimat!😀
looks bloody hard going but wow
I raced up that bloody road in the 80's! Brings back memories (painful).
Racing up must be a whole new level of pain!
+Mike Cotty -yes purgatory! Different era different riding style...Lowest gear I had was a 42 x 24 on a steel bike pushing 11 kilos.I was about 35 minutes down on the leaders - but still made it.
Do they still have cobbled switch backs? ...Those were notoriously slippery on the downhill section towards Zell am See.
Anyway I really enjoy your wonderful videos. Always look forward to new postings - such a treat. Makes me want to ride up there again after 33 years... - perhaps on my 30 year old vintage bike. thanks!
Wonderful video, as usual !
What is the intro music please?
Keep going guys, amazing work :)
BRAVO ON THE VIDEO EDITOR OF THE SHOWS. I BELIEVE THAT ONLY THE ASCENSION TO HEAVEN COULD BE MORE BEAUTIFUL OR WELCOMING. I WOULDN'T MIND MIND AT ALL IF THESE SHOWS WERE A COUPLE OF HOURS LONGER. I PROGRAM MY AXION ELITE TRAINER BASED ON THE % GRADES.
Hi Doug, thanks for your appreciation! It sounds like you may enjoy our 90 minute endurance / tempo video called 'To Get To The Other Side'. You can find out more at thesufferfest.com/collections/cycling-videos/products/to-get-to-the-other-side. Enjoy and thanks again for your support! Mike
Every video is so inspiring!!! I just finish all of it!!! Im a huge fan!!! I hope you can come and do the Taiwan KOM Challenge this year!
+anthony homer ulsa Thanks Anthony! We've got some beautiful climbs coming for you! One day it'd be amazing to visit Taiwan! Ride safe. Mike
Are you going a video of the Rettenbachferner from Solden Austria?
In the end credits I can see the north route to Großglockner from Ferleiten (to Fuscher Törl). Will you upload a video on this way sometime? I would be really happy about it :)
Dont think that they will so
Did it from the other (North) side from Zell am See and then Frusch. One thing this vid doesn't tell you is take some small change - the medal machine takes €1 and a 5 cent coin only. Shop was closed when I got there and you could only see the machine from it not any view as it was in the clouds and raining... Couldn't get change or a medal so I could only take a pic with my phone of the machine. Man, I got cold on the descent too!
Awesome! But i am still waiting for a video of you climbing to the very top, the Edelweißspitze (from either side, heiligenblut or ferleiten)!
Hi Tobi, the video is coming we're just working through a huge library of climbs that we've filmed. Stay tuned! Mike
Exciting, thanks! Looking forward to it! :)
Hey Mike, please tell Mavic to bring the Fury MTB shoe back into production, it is one of the best shoes ever!!!
I have to climb it again, was like 20 years ago. Should be easier than Fedaia I did last year...
That seems harder to visualise or to ride than the Alpine and Pyranees climbs... tho the last view was indescribable... #sheericesheet
Hello! Great video! Just booked my second cycling trip inspired by this channel. First one was Alpe D'huez. I have one little problem, though. I don't want to carry my bike and I thought I could easily rent one but I cannot seem to find a decent shop that offers bike rentals, even as far as Salzburg. I hope someone who reads these comments can come up with some recommendations!!!
did you get that bike rental? :D
@@craigsmith5134 Yep :) It was a pretty old guerciotti but did the trick
Ive seen you changed your wheelset? What wheels are those :-) ? Really really nice video.
They're Mavic Ksyrium Pro Carbons. My new favourites for mountain terrain!
I love all of your videos but i can't find the second from the Großglockner where you ridden from Ferleiten 😔
+Benedikt Schneider Thanks Benedikt. We're working on the second video, stay tuned it is coming! :-)
Mike says: “Super tough..” Mere mortals say: “Hmmm.....maybe next year...”
Germany now! What a pleasant surprise. That first section looks pretty tough. How does the experience compare to Italy and France?
+Matthew Holberton It's a magical road Matthew. Best ridden out of season or very early in the day to beat the traffic, it can be busy as it's a very popular tourist destination. Happy holidays! Mike
+The Col Collective and to you! I look forward to 2016! All the best.
+Matthew Holberton The Grossglockner is actually in Austria. Same language as in Germany, but a different country. Happy Holidays!
+Matthew Holberton - Austria - not Germany...
+MontrealsFinest sorry and thank you
+The Col Collective that is one beautiful n tough looking mountain to climb its a shame where i live in the uk there isnt any really hard climbs so i can test my legs n if i wanted to do some tough climbs where would you say to go
Hi Ben, anywhere in the Alps, Pyrenees or Dolomites will have you grinning from ear to ear!!
Mike Cotty ok thanks for letting me know i will have to find a hotel near some big climbs either in the dolomites or pyrenees
+Ben Lock look at Corvara in the Dolomites or and Luz St Sauveur or Bagneres de Luchon in the Pyrenees. Both offer top mountain options right from the door.
Mike Cotty i will have a look at them n thanks for letting me know or i would have had no clue where to start looking
+Ben Lock any time Ben!
wow you do sit on the saddle
Ha! Yep I do! ;-)
great vid :) mike are you vegan?
+Baia Squad Certainly am :-)
Driving in the middle of the road????
How much does it cost for a cyclist to go up the mountain?
Too many slow motion shots disguising his suffering becomes irritating. Didn't bother watching to the end.
I've cycled up the Grossglockner on a heavily laden touring bike. Should be a breeze on a carbon road bike.
