I did this climb last year, and it is the greatest thing I have ever done on my bike. Absolutely mind-blowing climb. Views and sensation of remoteness are so much more extreme than the classic Swiss climbs. Also, not mentioned here, there's a restaurant right at the end of the road, past the lake, great for a re-fuel. Also, bring bike lights because the automatic lights in the long tunnel don't always work.
I was lucky enough to cycle this whopper completely unexpectedly in November 2019. I had no idea which monster I had to overcome. I was training for an Iron Man and this climb seemed like a good preparation for the race. I now have some modest cycling experience (Marmotte, Tour of Flanders, Nove Colli, Grinta, Mojacar Hills and Calpe, Mont Ventoux, ...), but this grunt defied all my imagination... I took a VTT (which was not tailored to my small stature) and with no more than 2 gels and a drinking bottle I started the bitterly cold trip... The tour was started with great enthusiasm, but as time went by and the outside temperatures dropped, it became more and more a competition against myself... Hours passed by without encountering a living soul and as the ride progressed, the gradient became more and more intense. The lack of signposting and mile markings pushed myself to the limit... The icing on the cake was finally the arrival on this phenomenal mountain. What a battle of attrition... But unforgettable and without a doubt one of the most beautiful cols I have ever ridden...
I ride the Swiss alps for 4 years now but I've never heard of this climb before. Thanks a lot for the tip, it really looks wonderful! And no traffic sounds great.
The inspiration that Mike and crew has done with the videos gives me every reason to be inspired and determined to be riding the mountains, the flats, the challenging paths everytime all the time. Thank you Mike for the marvelous effort to put this channel of videos up!
Mike, truly amazing! I can't even to begin to describer how special this footage is and you looked quite amazing taking it on. Thank you so much for your work. John
+The Col Collective Nothing like great film making done right to ignite the fire in your belly and motivate you to get on the bike. Thank you for sharing this with the world. There are many beautiful places in the world but Switzerland is like a jewel amongst rocks. Stunning.
Sanetsch is a fantastic climb. I did it June 2017. No traffic. 10 for vistas. Also do Derborence, which is to the left on the ascent from Conthey or Sion. Derborence is a 9.5 for vistas but a 10+ for awesome tunnels.
Fantastic work as always on the camera...Mike is as fresh on a climb as he has been for over two years sharing these wonders with us... Kudos to the brilliant team and wonderful work... Cheers to The col collective :)
Such a beautiful sceneries from Switzerland makes cycling more inspiring! Thanks to The Cole Collective team and you Mike for bringing to us experiance from many hidden passes with fantastic views and challenging roads. Spport for great job!
Magnificent... bravo, captured the stunning, savage beauty of this climb & cyclists paradise Mike and the whole crew. I wish I could be out on that climb tomorrow but since that is just a dream, I'm glad to have it now on my list thanks to you guys and Alain.
Another one for the bucket list, which thanks to Mike and the collective, is growing longer every film!! Still, 4 weeks until I tick the Pyrenees climbs off the list, and this just makes me even more excited!!!
These videos are both inspirational and highly informative. Mike 's commentary provides so much, and when added to the awesome filming and superb choice of music...... well, it just makes me want to get on my bike and go find a mountain!
I'll tell you what, that's one hell of a "dead end!" More like a hidden kingdom. I'm binge-watching Col Collective videos and each is even greater than the last. It baffles me how this channel doesn't have 1 million plus subscribers. Every serious road cyclist deserves to savor this incredible channel.
You're very welcome Mike (and Col Collective Team). I just came back from riding my bike a lot during a month long holiday in mountainous Japan, and logged over 10,800 meters of total climbing. 90% in the saddle though as opposed to your 90% out of the saddle! Col Collective vids inspired me before and after every big ride there! Cheers and all the best, Brian
Mike, you always make me want to go for a ride. The only problem is you make it look so effortless that I start to think I'm a better rider than I'm truly are.
I did this climb on the weekend and boy did it deliver! However, it was a lot more difficult than the profile in the video suggests, because you include the long downhill section at the end. The second part of the climb is 18km at 8%, proper grueling stuff. The lack of traffic though is really welcome. In your next videos, can you visit Greece? The inner mountainous mainland is beautiful, relatively unknown and the warmer climate means most of the roads are open year round. The regions around Kalavrita, Zagorochoria or Parnassos may have nice climbs, usually ending in ski centers. Thanks for motivating us with ideas for new rides. Awesome videos, you are the best cycling channel on RUclips!
Mike...its been a while but worth the wait...amazing stuff...got a concussion in a race and was off the bike for a few weeks and this has inspired...cols in my future for sure...howdy from full of Cols California
Simply Stunning! Thank you so much for these breathtaking Videos. This is one of the very best and so beautifully filmed. I'm new to The Col Collective and loving it.
I love your videos. Always a treat. This one was interesting. Lots of climbing at the end. Amazing views. I can't think of anything that would improve your videos. Perfection. I would love to visit Switzerland and do a ride. Sustenpass looks like a good one.
Great video but not only in Europe !! Waiting for you in Colombia. Alto de Letras, Alto de Minas, Alto de la Linea, Alto del Escobero, Alto de Pescadero, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, Come on !!!!!!
Visited the French Alps last year, the Pyrenees this year. Now guess the Swiss Alps are on the list. Thanks for the inspiration Mike, although my bank balance won't!
despite all those inconveniences & issues during quarantine, the thing hurts me at most is not seeing Mike continue to ride and make videos. Besides why the hell this channel still 54k subs?! That should be illegal even the damn GCN has 6 or 7 digits figures sub ffs. LOL
The road is extremely quiet, even for cyclists. That's the beauty of this climb. I think when I did it I encountered no more than 10 cars the entire ride up and down (at least, once you're out of the vineyards which is the first 5km or so).
Yah bro totally cool right on. The loonies are the ones trying to prevent innocent helpless and unwilling animals from unnecessary abuse. Bro that sounds loony to me. Would u call me a loony for trying to help you if were unwillingly forced to fight to injury or death? Pff totally cause u sound super important. The world totally needs and wants more of u, am I right brah?
This channel is very underrated
What I love most about the sport of cycling is the camaraderie amongst cyclist.

The last 5 minutes are beyond words.

I love that climb, it has got everything you could want from any climb: great views over villages, forests, tunnels, rocky mountain scenery, a lake.
and oh yes, not much traffic
I ride the Swiss alps for 4 years now but I've never heard of this climb before. Thanks a lot for the tip, it really looks wonderful! And no traffic sounds great.

The absence of other humans at the begining, to me, is pretty darn eery. Where is everybody?
