So pleased to see you enjoy Hong Kong. I'm a Hong Kong permanent resident originally from the UK been there 20 years. I used to work for both of the biggest supermarket chains. 60% of all food shopping is done in the "wet markets" you visited rather than the modern supermarkets! Dim sum is traditionally breakfast food.
The wet markets were just amazing. And that is how we normally have had dim sum in the past two, for breakfast. But it was nice having the small plates for lunch as well
@@fatedestiny7402 yes gorgeous out here, I live in one of the traditional villages, along a hiking trail. So in the middle of a forest, yet still just 20 min drive to HK airport and 40 mins to HK Island 😁
@chilled-out-on-lantau I'm amazed by foreigners who love HK so much that they decide to settle here & call it home. I know a British lady who has been living here for decades. During the pandemic I said to her: I suppose you'll be leaving HK & return to England for good. She looked at me & said: why would I leave? Hong Kong is my home! I cried. Thank you for loving HK😊
@chilled-out-on-lantau Lantau Island surely has a lot of hiking trails with mesmerizing scenery. I particularly love the Tung-O Ancient Trail. It's not too demanding, the scenery is spectacular, and it takes you through ancient villages😊 I'm sure your little village is very lovely😊
The two bronze lion sculptures were nicknamed Stephen(in honour of Alexander Stephen, the General Manager of Shanghai Branch. He was the one who conceived the idea after seeing the stone lion outside the Arsenal Gate in Venice) & Stitt(Gordon Stitt, Shanghai Manager at that time). The return of Stephen & Stitt(here I mean the sculptures, not the persons😅) after the war was actually rather intriguing. They were brought to Japan as scrap metal. Fortunately the war was over before they were melted & were abandoned in a Japanese naval dock in Osaka. An American sailor, bless his soul, spotted them by chance. He had never been to HK but remembered seeing a similar pair outside the Shanghai branch. He notified the bank & rescue mission was organized immediately. To think that we almost lost our Stephen & Stitt forever if not for the sharp eyes(& memory) of the American sailor!
@15:45 I wish it was a clear day when you went up to the Peak. It'd have been 100x more beautiful & breathtaking! I think the panorama view from there is the best in the world (well I'm hongkonger so I suppose I'm biased😅)
Going to new places every few days has to be overwhelming. We left on our trip across North America 8 months ago, moving every 5-7 days. A month ago, we hit a wall and canceled most of our summer plans to stay in Vermont and Quebec and take in the hiking and cycling. It's only been a month and we are much better. But we. Are driving and cooking our own food. Keep having fun.
You're not wrong, sometimes it can be a little overwhelming and believe it or not putting together this video scrapbook that we do for RUclips helps us to focus our memories. But we do enjoy our sea days in between ports
Thank you for your wonderful series of videos from the Ultimate World Cruise. I stumbled upon your channel about 2-3 weeks ago by accident and was hooked. I love that you are making Phase 2 such a celebration of life by seeing this great big planet 🌎 I turned 60 in 2023 and I am trying to figure out just what I want the next phase of my life to be about. Travel has always been a part of my life yet there are so many places I still have on my bucket list. Thanks Nancy and Mike for all the inspiration ❤
Nancy here, thanks so much for following along on our journey. I turned 60 in August and I’ve already been telling myself. I want my 60s to be the best decade of my life!
@2:50 Next to St John's Cathedral is Castaways, a charity shop that sells donated goods. It was opened more than 30 years ago by a British lady. She still helps out at the shop after all these years. I love her dearly. She is one of the kindest person I've ever met.
I want to thank you so much for the comments. Please feel free to blast away!😅 and also, thanks so much for following along with us on our journey. We appreciate you.
Hello Mike and Nancy, so good to see you enjoyed all the experiences...Nancy your tan is just amazing..the Sun loves you❤😊, or maybe it was the mud scrub??? All your videos are just great ...so happy for you 2...😊😊😊
Nancy, you always look so relaxed and refreshed. I think by now, I'd be looking ragged and tired but you are glowing! This cruise life suits you. Lovely complexion. ❤ your favourite Aussie follower 🦘
The majority of the "ladies of the night" you see along Temple Street are from the Mainland China. They don't necessarily have citizenship. They apply for the "Two Way Exit Permit" & can stay in HK up to 14 days. They have to reapply every 3 month. The TWE Permit does not allow working in HK, so occasionally we hear news about these women being arrested & deport back to China.
I miss home. Thanks for sharing. Hong Kong claim the record of having the highest number of Rolls Royce per capital. Uber is technically illegal in Hong Kong, but because they are being legalized, they are allowed to operate.
Great video! It brought back many memories when I was there. You were talking about the old airport site and that is where we flew into so many years ago. Looking forward to the next video!
Great video as always. Love the fun, informative and engaging videos. I will love to find the link to Jackie Wang - the tour operator. Thanks in advance
Hello Mike & Nancy I love Hong Kong have been as a stopover on the way to Heathrow have stayed over night to break the flight. I have some lovely jade i bought there. St Johns Cathedral is traditional it looked like the boys were from the church school. Nancy how are your knees? Love from Sydney
Some tours we booked a year ahead of time. Wesearch Viator, short excursion group, get your guide, and others. Now our African tours, we’ve only had booked for a few weeks.
Things that are sold in the Ladies' Market(day & night) & Temple Street(night only) are either cheap stuff from Taobao or fake designers'. I always tell my foreign friends: you can have a stroll there to feel the atmosphere, but don't buy from there. They are overpriced. And the hassle of haggling😫
Hi Mike and Nancy! Stupid question but I was wondering, are there gratuities in Hong Kong and how do you handle that, did anyone on the ship or did your tour guide explain that to you? Thanks for taking us along, I very much look forward to your videos!! --Susan
Our experience was that and sit down restaurants you may leave a small tip somewhere around 10% depending on the restaurant and of course the service. Note that service charges may be automatically added in some places.. You might do a small roundup. Four things like private guides you have to consider the experience and the guide. We did tip our guide at the end.
Can i ask something?? i met a couple at Heathrow in the Lounge, they were enroute to Dallas 3 weeks ago (13th May), and they had just come off this cruise and flew from Singapore i think.. and when i said i follow a couple on the cruise they recognised you, but their itinerary was was way out from yours, so i'm guessing you are filming a few weeks behind???
We are actually close to two months behind. The videos are recorded, but we are only releasing 2 to 3 a week. They will continue to be released even after we get home.
How does the tour guide work? Do you pay a one off fee as a group or per individual? And when you eat somewhere, do you pay extra for that or is it included in the tour fee? Fascinating infos on different cultures. Happy travels.
For both your questions, it all depends on the tour. On some tours, one member of our party would pay and we would all Venmo that person our portion of the tour. And other tours, we would each pay individually directly to the guide. Same way with the food, sometimes it’s included and sometimes it is not. Every tour is different.
