The rich people have so high incomes they can't use it all up on cheap stuff within the time spann it takes for them to get paid again. mr bittman,, you are so far away from the reality, Hong Kong always was part of mainland China, it was leased to the bRitish as a drug debt for lost revenue when the British corporation used military might to force its opium onto Chinese population, tactics seen today by new state sponsoring military industrial complex...maybe Nathan should be venting his efforts and anger towards the people that controlled this place for so long, the bankers and financiers and not the Chinese government.
The description is bizarre: 'the newly-independent territory carved out it's post-colonial identity in a globalised world'. Hong Kong didn't become an 'independent territory.' It is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, just like Macau.

Nathan Law omitted pollution in his list of top things that annoy Hong Kong people. The so-called local government does nothing at all to regulate the influx of money, which drives the real estate market up by 15 to 20% per annum. It isn't about implementing new taxes and voting more regulations. Nope, it's about common sense. Tycoons and wealthy owners can throw in as much money as they want but they have to give back to the local community and pay higher taxes on profits made out of speculation.
Hate to say it but I barely graduated high school and do manual labor. I have a nice little brick home and shop on 5 acres. For once can Americans wake up and see what our country has done for us and be patriotic.
These educated Asians should've tried to get into European countries as economic refugees at the same time as the African refugees. Why bother trying to survive in a "hopeless" city. The old, homeless, and poor are similar to South Korea's old and poor and living alone with no children or government to care for them. The greed in the world has made it so that every one has to work 60hr per work just to survive and no one to care for our elderly parents. The world has gone to shits.
Rents are very expensive which tends to drive up the price of other goods and services. Hotel accommodation in Hong Kong is expensive compared to many other Asian cities. As another poster said, in nearby Shenzhen, you get a lot more space of a similar quality for considerably less. Agree though that transportation in HK is very reasonably-priced (and highly-efficient), and eating out doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg, if as you say, you are selective. Hong Kong is an amazing place though, and even though I have visited many times, I still feel a sense of excitement as the plane descends into the airport.
This is life in a western styled banking superstate...London heading same way as are many European cities...huge wealth gaps from the homeless to multi billionaires with the majority of people trying to exist inbetween...
capitalism (Noun) an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange, characterized by the freedom of capitalists to operate or manage their property for PROFIT in competitive conditions
This is a "socialist" society, isn't it? Oops! HK has special status...no wait...The CCP and Li Xinping just came up with, “A Decision on Some Major Issues Concerning How to Uphold and Improve the System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and Advance the Modernization of China’s System and Capacity for Governance.” Who knows what that means?
I am hopeful that Millennials and Gen Z will change the world for the better and actually tackle these types of problems that other generations have ignored.
There are so many videos about this ridicilous wealth gap between rich and poor in HK... Its insane how poor lives there, in small cages where rents are almost 1k HKD. And families need to live at HK 3years before they are accepted to citys housing.. This what i have learned through some research.

educate yourself. Don't you know that the real estate controlled by Li Ka-shing is restricting the development of Hong Kong? Hong Kong made its fortune on the mainland. Now the mainland does not need Hong Kong as a transit point in trade, so Hong Kong becomes poor.
mr bittman,, you are so far away from the reality, Hong Kong always was part of mainland China, it was leased to the bRitish as a drug debt for lost revenue when the British corporation used military might to force its opium onto Chinese population, tactics seen today by new state sponsoring military industrial complex...maybe Nathan should be venting his efforts and anger towards the people that controlled this place for so long, the bankers and financiers and not the Chinese government.
The constant questioning about how the poor feel about the very rich is irritating and superfluous.
Finally those people I'm sure that they at least poor that was hard.
Title is wrong health u mean wealth???
+ description typo
??? have you seen anybody who is sick? thei re all extremely healthy
Hong Kong students nz is with you we are sick of china buying up all the houses
I feel so bad for the older generation
Why? They're the ones who have created this problem.
@@sh0werp0wer
That is now coming back to bite them in the a$$.
The description is bizarre: 'the newly-independent territory carved out it's post-colonial identity in a globalised world'. Hong Kong didn't become an 'independent territory.' It is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, just like Macau.
Everything is accurate except Mabel. She is only middle class by HK standard and your guess is as good as mine about her being an influencer.
If you are in HK, go join one of the walks by Impact Hong Kong to distribute stuff to the homeless living in parks, stadiums and tunnels. You will be shock by the sheer numbers.
HK has no future. The government do not intend to do anything about it and are in cahoots with the property developers to make as much $$$ as possible before the communists take over completely. You can bet all of them already have citizenship in another country and can leave anytime.
If that woman in the beginning did not buy four of those handbags and instead gave that money to me here in Malaysia. I could pay off a house and renovate it.
I love the noblesse oblige of that Doctor Z the jewelry store man, yet remarkable he won't speak of the fact that there is no full democracy in Hong Kong. I don't admire him ...
Why would he? There is no freedom of speech over there idiot.
To be honest, Sydney properties are going crazy as well.
Severe wealth gaps may explain the 'riots' now in Hong Kong. Never seen anyone of the wealthy HK people marching on the streets protesting against the extradition Bill.
Because the rich have things to do such as work. My dad’s friend lives in HK and he says that the protestors are the useless young people who don’t work.
Instagram influencer? Don't make me laugh!
I know.. I just can't stand the name it's self... influencer .. oh my god like. Airhead. They are all airheads with too much shit. I have one wardrobe and enough coats to last me years. I have some that are over 10yrs old .. but that's all I need. I don't like clutter or having useless stuff all around the place. I would not like to be friends with shallow people who live in their own heads.. have a good day.
Mable isn't even attractive tho and her name reminds me of my grandma
Chinese choose very frumpy sounding english names, ive noticed that for a long time now
Majority of Hong Kongers live lives of quiet desperation.
Crazy that this tiny little apartment is expensive.
Ngeri banget, kejam sekali sama orang tua. Padahal mereka sewaktu muda giat bekerja agar perekonomian jalan. Gak ada asuransi atau rusunawa gitu? Pantesan banyak TKA China ke Indonesia, Malaysia, Filipina, Qatar, dll
Very eye opening!
Nice one hahaha, with their rice eyes.
You dont need to give hope to the poor people but a future .
Its funny when rich people and companies open places for poor kids etc. Most of the money goes straight to their pocket.
Create a poverty tax...the businesses arent paying other taxes...they can certainly afford it!!
She should give all her money away and buy the homeless a apartment
Mega Millionaire, screwing the Lower income Families sad
very good video thank you
I grew up poor in a wealthy adopted family they thought me nothing I ate once a day they drugged me with pills and narcotics
At 7:00 it sounds like he's talking about California.
I’m Rich but I live with my parents lol

Nathan Law omitted pollution in his list of top things that annoy Hong Kong people. The so-called local government does nothing at all to regulate the influx of money, which drives the real estate market up by 15 to 20% per annum. It isn't about implementing new taxes and voting more regulations. Nope, it's about common sense. Tycoons and wealthy owners can throw in as much money as they want but they have to give back to the local community and pay higher taxes on profits made out of speculation.
I was born with brain trauma and they gradually made it worse over time
Poor old people like auntie. Then these snotty young kids with everything and think they are entitled.
Paying one third of her pension on an illegal property, the landlord should have his testicles surgically removed without pain relief.
If it wanst a British colony, hongkong is never been famous and successful,
Don't matter how much money you have we are all destined to die.
Should it be Extreme Wealth?
Hate to say it but I barely graduated high school and do manual labor. I have a nice little brick home and shop on 5 acres. For once can Americans wake up and see what our country has done for us and be patriotic.
Jesus the garage is better than that lady room 300 dollar what a rip off
Such a huge disparity
that Dr aint no saint.
Seems like there would be more people on the street with the size of the buildings.
Well this video sure aged well.
For someone who is so “rich”, her furnishings is crap.
Extreme "Health"? Don't you mean Extreme "Wealth" with a W?
These educated Asians should've tried to get into European countries as economic refugees at the same time as the African refugees. Why bother trying to survive in a "hopeless" city. The old, homeless, and poor are similar to South Korea's old and poor and living alone with no children or government to care for them. The greed in the world has made it so that every one has to work 60hr per work just to survive and no one to care for our elderly parents. The world has gone to shits.
Waaaayyy too expensive, but a fascinating city. I’d love to visit it again.
What was so expensive, because I thought it wasnt too bad actually. You've got to be smart, then it's not that expensive.
I lived in China for a bit, about an hour away from Hong Kong by ferry. The rent for a comparable place was much more in HK.
Spellcheck on the title of this - Health? Should be Wealth...
Mabel, your not rich. Your dad is.
how's that wealth doing with all the riots?
This is life in a western styled banking superstate...London heading same way as are many European cities...huge wealth gaps from the homeless to multi billionaires with the majority of people trying to exist inbetween...
Poverty comes from having a body.
capitalism
(Noun) an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange, characterized by the freedom of capitalists to operate or manage their property for PROFIT in competitive conditions
This is criminal

Doesnt matter how much money these people have...we all do the same end. God has decided the same for any person.
The paradox...
Where is about health? Not a proper docu. as we thought.
I am hopeful that Millennials and Gen Z will change the world for the better and actually tackle these types of problems that other generations have ignored.

But they have it better than the average North Korean. That's for sure!
I've been living here for decade now. This is completely misguided documentary. What a same
Sting fist how
Yes how? Because this is third documentary I’ve seen relating to these issues in Hong Kong.
There are so many videos about this ridicilous wealth gap between rich and poor in HK... Its insane how poor lives there, in small cages where rents are almost 1k HKD. And families need to live at HK 3years before they are accepted to citys housing.. This what i have learned through some research.
@@tkinsgrant9370 this is my 4 , and also in China too , the same thing.
