Hey Joel: Thanks for teaching me how to change the Picture Frame on videos in Apple Photos. I've always been frustrated by my workaround (adding a title to a video whenever the thumbnail is ambiguous as to its content).
Great source of knowledge. Almost too much, but that's ok. Question: If all I want to do is export library to external drive since I'm now out of SSD space, what options should I use?
I'll take that as a compliment @hagemanfamily! I appreciate your kind words! If you're looking to move your whole Apple Photo library to an external drive, I would just move the library as a whole, instead of exporting it all out. If you export all files, you'll lose any organization of albums, indexing of people/pets, keywords or anything else. Instead you can copy the whole library to the external drive. I have a video that covers this process that I will link down below for reference: How to MOVE your iCLOUD PHOTO LIBRARIES and APPLE PHOTO LIBRARIES to an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE! ruclips.net/video/wArkMrYehR8/видео.html Another thing to consider if you move the whole library is to make sure all of your photos are actually located within the Apple Photo Library. Files can actually be located within the library or they can be referenced. I have a video that discusses that as well, which I will link below too: iCloud Apple Photo Library VS Referenced Apple Photo Library - the DIFFERENCE & WHY it MATTERS! ruclips.net/video/PzcnnD5fgow/видео.html I hope that helps! Hi Joel!! Finally I get to learn how to use this machine and it’s all thanks to you! I stillll have two questions however. 1. What would be the reason to select the maximum size or small size, it seems to have a direct impact on storage alone without consequence, same goes for tigg and the other one besides jpeg. Why would someone want to make it such a big file? 2 when exporting live pictures I think it’s mentioned where windows or Samsung can’t see the information and I’m curious if that applies to live pictures. I think in my experience I exported one and lost the live effect and couldn’t get it back since I deleted it from the original source. I think I’m confused on how Live Photos work and I know it might be a loaded question. Thank you so much!! This video was so good and thank you if you are able to answer the questions, I know it’s an old video

Love your videos! I was able to pick up a trick or two, even though I have been using Photos/iPhoto since iLife. Thank you for this. It might be interesting if you considered doing a video which is not so much nuts-and-bolts, but "How do I email a photo to my family," or "How do I share a slideshow with my family?" or "How do I upload to Google drive, or Smugmug, etc..." It is not always clear why we would choose TIFF vs JPEG vs PNG, and other options. Keep up the good work.
Hello Joel! When exporting JPG, the dpi will be 72 even with the maximum quality and maximum size. For you it's 300 dpi as I see it. Can I set this up? Regards, Tamas
Great question @bommaritohawaii, I hope I understand correctly. If you drag a picture taken with Portrait Mode, it will keep and bake in the current settings/depth of field that you have it currently at. If you re-import that same photo, it will still show as a "Portrait" photo, but you will no longer be able to adjust the f-stops. If you Export from the File menu within Apple Photos and choose the option for "Export Unmodified Original", then if you re-import that photo, nothing will change you can still adjust the f-stops and such within Apple Photos. I hope that makes sense! Thanks so much for watching! If this video was helpful and you learned something new, please SUBSCRIBE to my channel if you haven’t already! GREAT video ! Thank you. You got me as a new subscriber. Two questions if you would be kind enough to answer: 1. Is there a way for me to export an entire folder from Apple photos with all of its contents and folder name? 2. I have about 60,000 photos. About half of them are in folders currently. Is there someway for me to know which photos are not already in a folder so I can export them to a separate folder for categorizing later? Again; thank you for the great content.
I'm on Monterey. I have run out of disk space on my 2017 MBP and was thinking of buying iCloud storage 2TB. My question is will the folders and albums sync on iCloud exactly as I have them on my MBP Photos app? So if I delete all the contents of Photos on my MBP will I then find everything organized in the same exact way on iCloud?
Hi @nounix! So have you confirmed that the Photos is the main culprit for taking up space? If so, DO NOT delete the contents out of Apple Photos as it will also delete it from iCloud. iCloud Photos is more about syncing rather than a backup of a oneway sync. To answer your other question, yes regular albums sync exactly from your Mac to iCloud Photos. If Apple Photos are taking up the majority of space, You should turn on the option to "Optimize Photo Storage". This setting is within the Apple Photos Settings. The video below discusses this topic not only on Mac, but also iPhone and iPads. Storage is FULL! - How to OPTIMIZE FILES and FIX your STORAGE PROBLEMS on Macs, iPhones and iPads ruclips.net/video/VhGG6goINBM/видео.html Thank you so much for taking your time to watch this video. Hello Joel! Thanks for you videos. I've a question for you. I've exported all my live photos to my pc/mac from my iphone/icloud. I've deleted them from my iphone but what if i want to put them back in as LIVE photos. is there a way to do it? thanks!
Hi @machdaddy6451! I do have a long list of ideas that I can add your suggestion, but I don't really use Shutterfly all that much! How can we see the creation date on individual pictures without having to open pictures, command i, then look under exif after exporting? I understand if we export with moment name the folder is dated. What is the easiest and fastest way to do this for my entire library? I'm still trying to wrap my head around if I have my system library set to optimize storage and export , will I get the full resolution original pictures? If I select to download the originals I can access the photos right away but would still need to export right if I want to print for ex? If icloud has my original photos why would I ever need to download the originals in my library? I promise I've listened to you:)
When I exported unmodified originals, I noticed there was some extra files added in the folder I exported the photos to. I tried opening it but it was just some text. I think it said “aaa” something but I’m not sure. What is it and does it affect the photos if I delete it?
Great question @shmaoo1790! That .aae file is typically associated if you've edited the photo before. You can safely delete it as it will not affect the exported photo at all. The purpose of that file is to hold the metadata/information about the edits of that photo if yo were to import it back into an Apple Photo Library. Thank you so much for taking your time to watch this video. It is greatly appreciated! Kudos 👏🏽 for another awesome tutorial! Your instructional videos keep getting better and better. Not sure if you’ve done one yet but would like to hear your thoughts, tips and tricks, dos sand don’ts of managing multiple Photo libraries. Given my 200gb iCloud plan I’m already keeping my photos in one library and my videos in another. Unfortunately with over 20,000 photos I’m starting to run out of space. What suggestions would you have how best to split this up? Thx!
Thanks @Razy K Salam! Coming back really soon! I've recently moved and finally have an actual office now! More to come and thanks for sticking around! Your support is so appreciated!
Joel, you didn't cover my most import workflow... which is exporting Cinematic video. I want to migrate content from Photos App to Mac OS... folder in Finder. I want to retain all of the cinematic video content here, organize, etc. Then push into Final Cut for editing. What is the best process for this? Can I delete the aae files upon export to Mac OS?
Fantastic question @bommaritohawaii! Unfortunately I'm still rocking an iPhone 12 Pro, so I don't have that wonderful feature! Here's what I did find on Apple Support that may hopefully be helpful. I will link their articles below: Import into Final Cut Pro for Mac from Photos support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/import-from-photos-verc5d33882/10.6.6/mac/12.6 Import Cinematic mode clips into Final Cut Pro for Mac support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/import-cinematic-mode-clips-verb4a073010/mac#:~:text=Transfer%20using%20AirDrop%2C%20then%20import,Photos%20Data%2C%20then%20tap%20Done. Enable Cinematic mode video adjustments in Final Cut Pro for Mac support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/enable-cinematic-mode-video-adjustments-ver66987026d/mac Based off those articles above, it looks like you may not want to do a traditional export from Apple Photos and utilize the connection between Apple Photos and Final Cut, or drag directly from Apple Photos to Final Cut. hi, l've seen your older videos about iCloud and stuff and i have a question, if i seen "your icloud storage is full and photos are not updating in icloud " and i kinda ignored it and i took a lot of photos, after a while i paid for more icloud storage but when i open icloud i cant see the photos from earlier . please can you help with that and how i get the photos.
Hey joel i hope you see this brother i have one simple question i have 5 diffrent photo libraries. i was wondering. what happens if i drop a library into iCloud? can icloud hold apps like games i download from the app store or even a full photos library say it has 50gb i have the 2tb plan. im afraid to drag & drop a full library & drop it into the icloud but it would be nice if that was a thing if not thats cool i was just curious.
Got a question I have eseecloud security cams and it’s just now saying cloud all most full do you know if the videos are getting backed up in iCloud or would it be a total different app
Hey @Jeremiah Buren! I haven't run into this, I shoot on a Canon 5D Mark IV in RAW and edit on a 16" MBP with M1 Pro chip. What are you shooting with, and what Mac do you have? Just about to move over 1.2TB of files on to icloud/apple photos so been watching all your videos before i make the jump. Is it possible to mark a photo/video or even an album to never delete. My kids like looking at the old ones and im worried if they get loose they can accidently delete files?

I can relate to error messages that give you very little to no information @Lindsey T! My first hunch would be to ask if you're using iCloud Photos, and then secondly if you have the setting turned on to "Optimize Mac Storage" within the settings of Apple Photos. If you do have this turned on, it could be that you're trying to export photos that are not yet downloaded on your Mac. The other thing that comes to mind is if your photos are in an Apple Photo Library or a referenced library. If they're in a referenced library and the photos truly aren't there, this could also produce an error. I will link a video below that talks about the differences. iCloud Apple Photo Library VS Referenced Apple Photo Library - the DIFFERENCE & WHY it MATTERS! ruclips.net/video/PzcnnD5fgow/видео.html I hope that helps! I stumbled here because I am so fed up - trying to export original unmodified and keep getting aae files - then get error messages... and arg! Would love to dump Apple Photos but so well integrated and Lightroom $
Hi @KarenKefauver! The .aae files will be exported with each photo you export as unmodified. Is there a reason you're choosing to export them as unmodified? What is your workflow and goal? Are you using Apple Photos just for organization and Lightroom (LR) for Editing? If you're primarily using LR as your Editing tool, you can create LR Catalogs and store photos in there as well. Or you can do your own file structure and organization with folders in the Finder and use either Apple Photos or LR. Thank you so much for taking your time to watch this video. It is greatly appreciated! If this video has been beneficial, I would be honored if you would consider sharing it with your social media network and expressing your gratitude for its assistance. I don't trust Apple Photos- crashes often and want to make sure I have a hard drive of my photos of the umodified versions - I assume umodified means un edited. I feel like I have somehow lost the unedited version - meaning as I flip thru Photo Library I see the edited versions with no "revert to original" option. I am also confounded as to why I have sometimes 5 idential images that can range from 5 mb to 17.. and wildly in between. NOt sure what is happening in my work flow from my iphone 15 pro - used for ALL my photo-taking - to get to computer.

When you have a photo selected and you go to File > Export > Export 1 Photo, it gives you the main export window with those 3 categories of: Photos, Info and File Naming. But to see more there's a little triangle button that looks like "⋁" or "⋀" to expand and see more options in the first category of "Photos"
Your videos are wonderful. Only you talk and go so fast that I can’t always follow. Where do you preview the exported pictures? Do they stay on my computer?
I appreciate your kind words and feedback @Tamar Kohn Marks! Keep in mind, RUclips does have an option that allows you to control the playback speed of videos to watch, so you can easily slow things down if needed! What do you mean by "preview the exported pictures"? Like where do I save the exported pictures? If so, you can save/export anywhere you would like. I usually do it to my desktop for quick access, and then when I'm done using the exported photos I personally delete them as when you export anything from Apple Photos, they still will reside in the library. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If this video was helpful and you learned something new, please SUBSCRIBE to my channel if you haven’t already! I wish just once you could show me how to do something and it was simple. Everything in Apple has become so 🤬complex. That was the nice thing about when Steve Jobs ran the company instead of a bunch of engineers as they always made it easy for simple minded people like me to perform a function.

They complicated everything and have all these things you can do but give you so little memory and to add you need to spend more money after spending so much already on a lap top or phone and then have all these different ways to do one thing like exporting pictures from one device to another, smh.
I have a video that covers this process that I will link down below for reference:

Another thing to consider if you move the whole library is to make sure all of your photos are actually located within the Apple Photo Library. Files can actually be located within the library or they can be referenced. I have a video that discusses that as well, which I will link below too:

Great as always! Thanks!

I would like to export portrait photos from Photo App to Mac Finder. If I drag and drop out (as jpg) will the portrait format be exported by default?

GREAT video ! Thank you. You got me as a new subscriber.
Two questions if you would be kind enough to answer:

Hello Joel! Thanks for you videos. I've a question for you.
I've exported all my live photos to my pc/mac from my iphone/icloud. I've deleted them from my iphone but what if i want to put them back in as LIVE photos. is there a way to do it? thanks!
Wow you have great photos
Could you please do a tutorial on how to upload photos from a MacBook laptop to Shutterfly.

Is there something specific I could help you with in regards to uploading?

Cool video :) Thanks

Thx!
We miss you man where are you..!! Please come back with new videos. Watching your videos is a real fun.

I will link their articles below:
Import into Final Cut Pro for Mac from Photos
support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/import-from-photos-verc5d33882/10.6.6/mac/12.6
Import Cinematic mode clips into Final Cut Pro for Mac

Enable Cinematic mode video adjustments in Final Cut Pro for Mac
support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/enable-cinematic-mode-video-adjustments-ver66987026d/mac
Based off those articles above, it looks like you may not want to do a traditional export from Apple Photos and utilize the connection between Apple Photos and Final Cut, or drag directly from Apple Photos to Final Cut.
I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!

What if I export for example an png photo as jpeg? Does that affect the quality?
Hi @shmaoo1790,
I would bet money you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the png and jpeg. JPEG will most likely be a smaller file size.

hi, l've seen your older videos about iCloud and stuff and i have a question, if i seen "your icloud storage is full and photos are not updating in icloud
" and i kinda ignored it and i took a lot of photos, after a while i paid for more icloud storage but when i open icloud i cant see the photos from earlier . please can you help with that and how i get the photos.
Hey I haveing trouble exporting 7k photos. It takes like two to three days. Any tips to do this faster?
Hey @Jeremiah Buren!
I haven't run into this, I shoot on a Canon 5D Mark IV in RAW and edit on a 16" MBP with M1 Pro chip.
What are you shooting with, and what Mac do you have? Did this just start happening, or has exporting never worked?
Are you exporting to change file size, or what's the end goal?

What about getting an error that states "Export complete with errors only 18 of 61 photos exported" and there are no reasons why?
I can relate to error messages that give you very little to no information @Lindsey T!
My first hunch would be to ask if you're using iCloud Photos, and then secondly if you have the setting turned on to "Optimize Mac Storage" within the settings of Apple Photos.
If you do have this turned on, it could be that you're trying to export photos that are not yet downloaded on your Mac.
The other thing that comes to mind is if your photos are in an Apple Photo Library or a referenced library. If they're in a referenced library and the photos truly aren't there, this could also produce an error. I will link a video below that talks about the differences.

Email address no longer valid. How to change it?
Hi @hagemanfamily!
Where are you seeing this message for email no longer valid?

It is MacBook Pro Sonoma 14.6.1 it’s like a big window export location, file naming viedo, file setting etc
When you have a photo selected and you go to File > Export > Export 1 Photo, it gives you the main export window with those 3 categories of:
Photos, Info and File Naming.

I wish just once you could show me how to do something and it was simple. Everything in Apple has become so 🤬complex. That was the nice thing about when Steve Jobs ran the company instead of a bunch of engineers as they always made it easy for simple minded people like me to perform a function.

Man do i hate technology. They complicated everything and have all these things you can do but give you so little memory and to add you need to spend more money after spending so much already on a lap top or phone and then have all these different ways to do one thing like exporting pictures from one device to another, smh. Keep it simple 😑
My problem is the name of the iPhone photos. They started like IMG_XXX.jpeg, there is not the date like yyymmdd_hhmmss.jpeg, for exemple.
