The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying.
There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers.

Greetings from Canada. I share your choice of this Deniére Danse as a favourite Diana performance. I think it is done beautifully. The French language is a perfect match for her ability be totally engaged in the lyrics. I like all of her work, but it’s nice to see a performance that isn’t a singing contest with distractions from the judges and audience. However her earliest performance at age 14 in a contest, Rechenka, was absolutely brilliant. That is my second best favourite.

I would love to hear her some day sing one of the greatest Greek folk songs in existence, the original singer has also a unique voice that it is considered a legend in my country, no matter who else is trying to cover it fails miserably, i am sure that Diana will do it justice, it will never happen but i can always dream.

The singer is called Marinella, she is 85 years old today, she is extremely charismatic, she has a powerful voice and she had a very tough life like Diana, i am sure she will be elated if she ever heard Diana sing this song, Marinella helped numerous artists in her life that now are "top" in Greece, she is a very good person and she has many many songs that can be considered legendary but among them this one is still her top.

It's an over 300 year old folk song about a Cossack warrior who dreams of his death in an imminent battle. On Diana's face you see sadness, anxiety and pain of the soul of the Cossack warrior. One would swear she borrowed that soul to perform the song.
