    I bet the higher pressure and smaller nozzle will make the wax vapourise, it was already starting to smoke slightly in the last test.. if it does vapourise you can add a blowtorch towork as a pilot light and make a wax flamethrower.
    Its similar to how a paraffin blowtorch heats the oil until it vapourises and shoots out as a gas under pressure

    The fun thing about the initial trial run here... ballistic gel is meant to roughly simulate human tissue. And the 700 bar in the cylinder is lower than the ~1000 bar where ultra-deep submarines have gone.

  • @PaulG.x
    @PaulG.x 11 месяцев назад +2

    The gel does not act like a fluid because it isn't one.
    A gel is a colloid consisting of a liquid suspended in a solid:
    "A gel is a semi-solid that can have properties ranging from soft and weak to hard and tough. Gels are defined as a substantially dilute cross-linked system, which exhibits no flow when in the steady-state, although the liquid phase may still diffuse through this system. A gel has been defined phenomenologically as a soft, solid or solid-like material consisting of two or more components, one of which is a liquid, present in substantial quantity.
    By weight, gels are mostly liquid, yet they behave like solids because of a three-dimensional cross-linked network within the liquid. It is the crosslinking within the fluid that gives a gel its structure (hardness) and contributes to the adhesive stick (tack). In this way, gels are a dispersion of molecules of a liquid within a solid medium. The word gel was coined by 19th-century Scottish chemist Thomas Graham by clipping from gelatine."

    I wonder if marshmallows would work in the cylinder. Would they squish and extrude? Would they compress down at 100+ bar and then expand back after it comes out of the nozzle? Could you get a fluffy marshmallow beam? or would it stay close like the ballistic gel?

  • @monkaeyes3417
    @monkaeyes3417 11 месяцев назад +9

    That thing looks like a laser beam. It’s far too dangerous to bother trying but if someone were to fire some molten aluminium or something through it, it would be crazy. Like it would turn into a solid almost instantly after it exited the cylinder. Just due to the very high surface area. I wonder what that would end up doing to a watermelon.

    • @sealpiercing8476
      @sealpiercing8476 11 месяцев назад +3

      Yes, this is a very good idea not only with candle filament but other things. Measure speed of extruded filament and try to catch it on a spool spinning that fast. It's probably even better if the spool is farther away so extruded material has time to cool in air a little.

    Is it possible to interrupt the stream of wax to see if smaller segments of wax also travel straight and would hit the same point as the solid
    beam? Perhaps a spinning plate with notches (establish beam then start spinning)? That the beam of wax stays so straight is curious. I suspect solidification and 'effective backpressure' are at play -- wax can't slow down because it's getting pushed by wax behind it. Totally cool, and I'm sure you'll come up with something for the gelatin. Take care, and enjoy your vacation. I hear Lapland has a pretty good coffee and gift shop.

    Hi guys Richard Gatchell from New Zealand here. Firstly love you're channel so pleasekeep it up. So where the small hole is that the stuff comes out from could you put some type of band around it until it gets to its breaking point while you're pushing down the press so once the say metal band you can do up with a screw driver or socket gets to its point of breaking you could instantly have candle wax that could potentially cut the pice of timber at almost point blank range? Not necessarily a candle it could be water but on the press have the likes of a cars piston that water couldn't escape past like oil doesn't get past the rings unless.. the pressure in a cars engine isn't as much as you are pushing down with the press? Anyway just a suggestion.
    Richard.

    You're probably not going to see this but if you do, I was thinking whether it would be possible to simulate underwater pressure on a submarine (inspired from what happened recently) using maybe an empty but sealed coke can or container inside of an acrilic tank containing water, the press would act as a piston in compression and raise the pressure and see how much pressure it would take to cause the container to explode. Safety first, you'll probably need an outer acrilic box or something to protect you and everything around from catastrophic explosion or risk of hydrolic injection.

      His press is capable of creating far more pressure than is shown here. If he maxed it out the cylinder itself would explode or shoot the nozzle out at super sonic speeds. That's why he said at the end he wants to try to build something that can take 100% of his press's power.

    Another fantastic show thank you, I've got a suggestion that will challenge your skills to create the longest laminar jumping fountain and see how far you can get a Laminar jet of water to jump. You will have to turn and fabricate the nozzle and use a ram to provide the pressure behind it, either a continuous flow that will look like a clear glass arch or stop-start and have the fountain look like it's shooting hotdogs made of clear glass that are just water. If you want you could illuminate the jets of water, or you could just buy a Laminar nozzle with lights included and pump crazy high-pressure water through it. All the best from Scotland

    Hello! I don't know if you still run the deep sea chamber, but my request would be to test PVC pipes, because they would be useful as submersible containers. I believe they should last about 5-6 atmospheres, which actually is 50 meters deep, not bad. Some PVC pipes have a specification for 6 atm anyway, but that is from the inside out, so I don't know if we could assume it will be the same from the outside inside. You would probably need to attach a screwing cap on both sides, which requires molding the pipe with a hot air gun so the cap receiver fits into the pipe. It's not difficult. Could you do this please, thanks.

    The candle was most satisfying. It got all three shelves!

    That candle stream looks like it burns.

    Holy shit did it fly!
    Should've put the ballistics gel in front of that at the last part - It would've been shredded or shoved down off the table!

    I think it depends greatly on the relative densities of the projectile and target.

      Yes, when pressure gets higher, the bonds between atoms play less of a role and the relative densities (atom or molecule weight) of the two materials start to play a bigger role. This principle is used when designing new projectiles at speeds of Mach-4+. But one can also push a blob of water through a steel plate if one makes the water go fast enough (as in 5 km/s).
