    What's your favourite Strat mod?

  • @LeStraTele
    @LeStraTele 25 дней назад +2

    I just add a toggle switch to bring the bridge pickup to the volume pot with whatever the 5 way is set to. It's quick and simple way to get the other pickup combinations. Works for me.

    I put blended wiring in my Strat years ago - I wouldn't say it was better or worse - just a different flavour!

    My American Performer does this, you pop up the bottom tone knob and it adds the neck pup to the bridge. I don't really like it, I like either neck, or position 2 for maximum quack. It's a STRAT, after all :D

    There's a killer video of an entire Snarky Puppy set performed in Asheville where the camera man is positioned directly in front of Mark Lettieri; and one of my favorite things about the video is that you can hear Mark's amp so clearly. And with that, you can hear all of the texture, dynamics, and articulation in his playing/tone. Mark was outspoken about the particular guitar he's playing in that video (before his signature model days), mentioning the fact that it had this exact modification done to it and you can definitely hear it. He manages to get this amazing, full bodied funk rhythm sound that still has a lot of precision to it. I *need* to try this out on one of my stratocasters; and I've thought that ever since I heard that Mark had that capability on his!
    The entire set is worth listening to, since it's basically a master class on how to fit into a musical situation like Snarky Puppy as a guitarist. Here's the video: watch?v=NDZrUaajNr0

    Very interesting topic. I did it a bit different. I took out both tone controls and used the middle one to blend in the middle pickup in any position. The third switch position does the Tele thing (bridge + neck) The second tone control was replaced by a "C-switch" that allows to switch different capacitor values parallel to the bridge pickup. Only disatvantage is - I can't use the middle pickup alone but it doesn't bother me

  • @louaguado995
    @louaguado995 24 дня назад

    I've done something like the blend. I'd convert it to 2 volumes and 1 master tone. I converted the second tone to a volume control for just the middle pickup and bypassed the switch. Then replaced the 5 way switch with a tele style 3 way.

  • @temorinkaari
    @temorinkaari 15 дней назад

    I personally like having 2 volume controls rather than multiple tone controls. For cleans, gain channel and roll off neck pickup almost completely off until it's as clean as it gets, for rhythm bridge pickup at 7-8, for leads, all the way up

    My Strat has the pretty common S1 switching mod in it with a push-push to bring in the neck in any position and I absolutely love having all three pickups engaged. Great tones Leon

  • @tmartin6717
    @tmartin6717 25 дней назад +1

    I built a test "franken strat". The three knobs are separate volume controls for each pickup, and they are all push pull, (two for phase reversal, and the neck switches 250 or 500K pot values, which changes the neck tone.) The 5 way switch is replaced with three on/off toggles for each pickup. finally, there is a master tone toggle that is equivalent to 7 on a normal tone knob. FYI, if you use two pickups out of phase, it sounds bad until you drop one of the volume controls to get interesting blends. Also, I have done your blend mod on two of my playable strats.

    Blended mods are a must on my strats. I prefer a universal tone knob anyways. Furthermore, running all three pickups at the same time on a clean setting is the bomb. I can actually get a better Sultans of Swing tone that way.

    I have a couple of versions the 'Gilmore Switch'
    and a Blend with output tone control.
    I''ve gravitated to the Blend.
    My start up is always 5, 5, 5 in position 2 on a clean stacked comps setting.
    If that sounds 'right' we're good to go.

    *My coolest strat mods are hollowing out the entirety of the body underneath the pickguard and installing a piezo acoustic pickup to the cavity onto a blender pot.*
    The semi-hollow body conversion in itself takes the stratocaster sound and adds a x3 to everything, and the acoustic pickup on a blender pot gave an amazing acoustic guitar sound.
    *The semi-hollowbody conversion though is the ultimate mod for strats. It advances every characteristic we love them for and increased sustain and all-around character to the strat accent in notes.* If you love Strats like I do, this is the Boss level mod lol.

    So cool seeing your take on this, I just picked up a dirt cheap Hot Rod Red (because as we all know red paint makes better tone) Squire Affinity B stock thing for next to nothing and went to town on it, one of the things I changed was to put a dual pot at the bridge tone position so I could keep the bridge tone control and get a blender knob as well.
    I love it, so many cool tones from the blender.
    My Squire has only the wood and frets left on it from the factory but man these new cheapos play nice! The setup was really really good to start with and I only needed to hit the fret ends with a fret dress file to knock what little they missed back on 3 of the frets.
    Never owned a single coil thingy before, I like it.
    I did quite a lot of modding to it: installed a 0 fret, replaced the bridge with a FR Rail Tail, Graph Tech Ratio staggered locking tuners, foiled the cavity and replaced the pickguard with an aluminium paisley etched thing in red and the blender mod with a dual inline pot to keep the tone control. I liked the pickups it came with so they just got black covers to match the new black hardware.
    Still it ended up costing less than a Player Strat and IMO kills the Players in looks and playability and I got to play at being a luthier.
    That blender trick though, very very cool mod, everyone should at least try it.
    I'm loving the 0 fret too, just need to replace the nickle one with a stainless so it'll last but for now no notching or pings so that's back burner.

    Got a few Strat type of guitars I put together myself from parts. I like to have the reverse slant on the bridge pickup, inspired by Jake and Jimi, obviously. Makes the high strings more beefy. Have one that has those Suhr ML pickups I heard you playing on a previous video, well done. Sounds great. Even bought one of those pickup switches that you can click over so it's a ten way, not a five way. Bit of Brian May available there! Experimented with the wiring mod from Kinman too, that was pretty cool, being able to blend in the neck pickup.

    Time to whip out the soldering iron and do a little surgery. Or in my case, perhaps a bit of butchery. But that neck and bridge tone is, I think, worth the risk.

    Yea my modern green Strat has the tone wired to work with the bridge pick up. that was factory, but it also has a very thin neck and a 2 point trem bridge? And I always thought standards had 6 screw bridges? All I know it's Super fun to play.😂
