  • I never thought I would be this flabbergasted by any whisky. When you've been tasting spirits for this long, you don't really think that anything can shock you in a new way anymore. How wrong I was, and it took this exquisite bottle of Bushmills to prove it.
Spending the first thirteen years of it's life in ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso casks, it was then transferred to maderia casks for sixteen years! Bit of a stretch of the word 'finish', but it works nonetheless.
A huge amount of this whisky, for me, is the nose. The melding of toffee, coffee, tobacco and this wonderfully sweet. mouth watering minty aroma is jaw dropping. Other whiskies have had this this? Yes, they have. But none have delivered it quite the way this one has.
Nostlagia in the tobacco note is a key thing for me, so many smells of childhood captured in a liquid.
This is the best Irish whisky I've ever tried, it even surpasses the greats of Redbreast 15 and 21YO, but it is a single cask. As a result, numbers are low and it has to be treated as the exception that it is. With that said it is still on a different level of extraordinary.

Wonderful review. This sounded like a great bottle. So rich, deep orange with a bit of tobacco. So good! Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

I'm an Ulsterman and naturally Bushmills is just so ubiquitous, when I was first getting into whiskey as a young 'un I tried Black Bush etc. But nowadays I tend to look past them. Good point about the lack of 'premium' Bushmills, they have done some stuff down the years but I think you're right in that people tend to associate them with standard stuff. It's funny how even Echlinville have popped up as newcomers and slid more easily into that 'premium' space as a result of their marketing, even though they are still sourcing their whiskey.
But this sounds incredible! I'd kill for a bottle of this, as I love the sound of the tasting notes but sadly its well outside my price point. Hadn't heard of this one before (I guess because its a shop exclusive) but I have heard amazing things about some of other Causeway Collection stuff, particularly the 1995 Malaga Cask. Great to see more cask strength, non-chill filtered Bushmills too. Pricing is an issue though, but you can't blame them when thats the state of the market.

Yeah, it's a very pricy bottle, there's no way around that. But I'm honoured to have been able to try it. If something amazing happens this year, I might split the cost with a few friends.
Yeah, Bushmills need to move into that space, even if the stock is for a minority of the market. NCF, higher strength, etc. Midleton and Teeling do this really well, Bushmills certainly have the capacity.
      Cheers!

Hi Phil, don’t forget, a review/video takes as long as it needs to, 👍 . That bushmills sounds quite excellent shame that 30 or so years old whiskies are waaaay out of my price range, still I’ve got the 16 sitting around in my cellar. Awesome video Phil, enjoyed it, slàinte mhath

Thank you, David! Yeah, pricing is becoming absurd. Alot of big brands are yet to increase their prices this year, but some of them are going to be insane!

I love BushMills. I love the tropical fruit in Bushmills 16. Just wish the ABV was higher but it’s such a delicious pour in this right here that you’re consuming right now seems unfathomable in the best possible way.

Truly is, just goes to show what is laying in wait in every warehouse in every distillery.

Thank you for this video. When I first got in to whisky, my first favorite whiskey was the Bushmills 21 year. As my palate developed, I gravitated more towards higher ABV whiskies and constantly wished that one day I would be able to try their 21 year old at a higher ABV. I didn't hesitate in buying a bottle after the first 30 seconds of the video. Woohoo!!!

well since it was on sale I grabbed one. I love bushmills and I even had the chance to try some of the causeway collection before it was released (wildly in cork of all places). If anything the presentation is superb so it will look nice on the top shelf.

I've honestly not had much contact with Bushmills and as curious as I am - not sure I'll get a chance to try this one, and that's okay. It does sound like quite a transformative experience though. There's nothing wrong with talking about your own bottling - especially if you know it's something special. Which reminds me, I really must get round to reviewing our bottling of Caol Ila some time...

Wow a score of 10.. I've had the Bushmills 16 and it was very good. Big fan of Redbreast products. I do agree with you, the Bushmills 1991 is a great price considering its age and being a single cask. I believe most everybody starts off enjoying sherried whisky like myself. I got a little tired of it after a few years and started enjoying ex-bourbon whisky. But I can honestly say, I still buy and enjoy a well made whisky aged in an ex-oloroso cask. Which "Whisky Shop" do you work at and do you ship to the U.S. Great review.

I fall in and out of love with sherry, it's at its most consistent for me when peat is involved. Yeah, everything in consideration, it is a well priced product.
I work for The Whisky Shop, biggest independent retailer in the UK. We do ship to the US, but it is state dependent. Link from their shipping page is below:

Defo love to try this, but at £695 a bottle, it’s an absolute non starter for me. 2022 is going to be an interesting year that’s for sure. I’m quite (or have been) a prolific whisky purchaser down the years. Maybe 30-40 bottles a year. So far this year, I’ve bought nothing. Absolutely nothing. Prices have shifted and I see very little value in whisky of late. I wonder how many other people like me feel the same. Is the industry (in the U.K. at least) about to get burnt with their latest price hike. Time & a lack of empty shelves will tell I’m sure.

Same, I generally only look at auctions now after being alienated by pricing going up and up, but whilst I say that, prices there are also ballooning, often I see bids going way over what I personally set as what the 'value' is

There's no doubt about prices becoming silly, still more price increases to come as well.
