- When Looney, an OG Shoreline Crip from Venice Beach, CA, was incarcerated, he learned how to tattoo using a Walkman motor and an ink pen. Although illegal, being a “scratcher” (someone without formal tattoo training) in prison gave Looney the ability to cross the cultural divides that normally exist between different segments of the population and helped him gain respect amongst his fellow inmates.
Since his release, Looney has worked on building up his tattoo skills and continuing to learn by studying the works of Paul Booth, Bob Tyrrell, and Mister Cartoon. But since most of his training was done inside a prison cell instead of through an apprenticeship at a tattoo studio, he’s constantly had to prove to others that he’s more than just a scratcher. VICE catches up with Looney as he tattoos his friend Blue Rag and learns about his tattoo journey.

I grew up in Venice. I miss the City at times and I miss my Homies/ Brothers I haven't seen in years. From Central to Sylmar to L.P and Lastly Fire camp. I lost out on my childhood but I still have the memories. GOD BLESS MY BROTHER'S IN VENICE
I got my very first tattoo done in somebody house, and to this day I love it. I over the years had a lot of work done in houses and a lot of work done in shops. It’s always a great experience and I don’t regret any of my work wether it’s looked in a good or bad fashion. Good for both these men, glad they got another chance at life outside with they family
The technical ingenuity and creativity that prison tatoo artist need to acquire is impressive. The whole subculture is fascinating. It's cool to see them getting recognition whenever it happens.

Not only did change his life for the better but he also studied the greats in tattooing. True passion right here
David Twinn is one of the most passionate artist I know. I have a couple of tattoos done by him and planning to go back for more!!!! My eyes have been opened because he is really a legend. I believe he is capable of great things. You have my support always!!

How do guys in prison get so strong? I don't imagine prison food to provide the best muscle building nutrition, and I doubt that the guys have access to protein shakes and the like. Is it just a case of heavy weight workouts doing the job?

I use to deliver Pharmaceuticals to a Federal prison, and one of the inmates mention how the ensure I was dropping off helped them get strong and put on muscle. That’s gotta be one way to do it

His setup is just as legit as any shop.
Vintage Feels it’s really not. He does a good job but there are a lot of regulations and rules about health in tattoo shops that he doesn’t follow which is a problem for the health of his clients

No, I'm sorry it doesn't. It's not a bigger struggle- It's an easy way out. It's skipping the health codes, classes and the real stuggle of of getting a spot in a real shop. I'm not saying you have to go get some $1000 tattoo, I just want the public to see that there are standards the tattoo artist and the clients both need to stick to.
