- "Is It You?" was one of the tracks from Lee Ritenour's 1981 jazz album "Rit", featuring vocals from Eric Tagg. It became a crossover hit reaching number fifteen on the pop chart and number twenty-seven on the soul chart. Lee Mack 'Captain Fingers' Ritenour is a guitarist, recording artist, composer and producer. He began his career at the age of 16 and has appeared on over 3000 sessions, recorded over 40 albums, and has charted over 30 instrumental and vocal contemporary jazz hits since 1976. Ritenour is considered to be a pioneer in the contemporary jazz and jazz-funk genres of music. Ritenour was born January 11, 1952 in Los Angeles, California. He played his first session when he was 16 with The Mamas & The Papas and given the moniker 'Captain Fingers' because of his manual dexterity on the guitar. His prolific career includes a Grammy Award for the collaborative work "Harlequin" (1985), and 17 other Grammy nominations. Ritenour also holds the distinction of having two of the promotional videos for his songs "Is It You?" and "Mr. Briefcase" being played during MTV's first day. Ritenour has been at the top of many guitar polls throughout the world. Throughout his career, Ritenour has experimented with different styles of music. A true fusionist, he has often incorporated elements of funk, pop, rock, blues, Brazilian and classical music with jazz. This channel is dedicated to the classic jazz music you've loved for years. The smokin' hot, icy cool jams that still make you tap your feet whenever you hear them . . . Cool Jazz is here!

1981 working at pizza Hut and putting money in the juke box to hear this song over and over again
And you know it
Nice. I was eleven and this song was already about ten years old, and i remember thinking if id have a boyfriend who would sing this to me one day, Cd 101 in nyc loved to play this song back then.
I would’ve done the exact same thing!
And I would've done the same ‼️ 👍🔥
That was back when Pizza Hut actually made good pizza lol
What a great song in 2023! The 80s will never be repeated! Thank you Lee for this great song.
I originally thought he was the singer, but he is not.
I was 19 years old when this song came out back in 1981 and here I am 61 years old not understanding where the last 40 years went😢
This is 2023 and this song is still powerful and pure! I am 56 and have always loved it from the first time I heard it back in the day! I just did a road trip to Phoenix from Denver and on the way back I was listening to one of my online 80s streaming stations and this came on and I just lost it with my 15yr old son. Of course he doesn't appreciate good music like this but it's ok cause I can't get enough of music like this😊 Music today can't touch music like this! PEACE!

I sent this to my girlfriend after we reconciled from a split. It summed up my emotions. Unfortunately we split again several months later. Hearing this song just brought back how right it all felt. I guess this will always be that song now.

Makes me wanna be a teenager in the 80s again, it was more sincere then, people were more real.
This is great to hear again in my 60th year on earth. I hear EWF influence. Just beautiful.

3.6M views, from 13 years ago… if that isn’t timeless I don’t know what is. Fabulous track and I’m thrilled it’s getting the recognition it deserves. The guitar solo is sublime, if I could pick a specific moment.
Can we also talk about how they bring the intro back to serve as the bridge? SO satisfying. And so 70s/80s. Such clever songwriting.
Yeeeessyss,,,. Reminds of Kool Jazz Festival in Hampton Virginia....1980... City folk ' can't relate like Southerners.... with this music it's Calm, warm & brezzy
This is such a great song. Can it be 1981 again please. Where has the time gone?
Can't believe this song goes back to 1981!
It is just so fresh It just fits in so well even in today's music !
Nobody out there today can even come close to something like this !
This is one of the best melody songs I ever heard and its even more classier now that todays music is so worthless.
I could not have said it better
Preach!
You are 1000% right.
I wouldn't say worthless, but definitely harder to find.
There is no real music anymore.not like it used to be.

In 2002 I ran my first marathon in San Diego. At around mile 23 I was completely exhausted but this song came on my Walkman and I became so energized by hearing it that the remaining 3 miles were a breeze. Nearly 20 years later it is still one of my favorite songs. It is truly a classic.
Inspirational music.

Eric’s voice was made for this song! Loved it back then, love it even more now!💕💕💕💕💕💯💯💯💯💯
Brings me back to the great 80's--young children, stay-at-home mom, and great music. Nothing like it today!
I think I first heard this song on “The Wave” in the late 80s or early 90s while I was young and in LA ready to conquer the world…this song has that magic ability that great songs do of taking us back to a certain feeling or time that could be described as nostalgia - but it’s a more specific nostalgia.
Anyway, for me, “Is it you” takes me back to West LA and living and working to find my place in the world while the whole future was in front of me. 30yrs later and retired from a full career in finance, I can only think: “Where the Hell did the time go?”
You worked hard Gus you didn't count the time- you made the time count! Awesome!
Wow!! Thomas Great caught phase.. My friend.

This song resists the boundaries of time and for some people touches a special moment in their lives. What more could you ask of an artist? Mr. Ritenour captured one if those moments with this effort. Bravo!
iliveibreathe hey I was 11 years old too, I heard Phil Perry sing this song and was confused? I thot he sang this song back in the day? Both versions are Beautiful but, Mr.Perry put so much Strength and power behind his voice it hit me with Emotions from within! Check his version out you’ll Love it even more.
The one song that will always be tied to the time I drove to see a beautiful girl whom I had a Chance meeting with months before. We were from different states and in H.S. I had decided that I just had to see her before I left for the Navy, so while on my senior trip in Florida after graduation, I bugged out and drove all day to surprise her. We had only part of one evening together. Young and innocent, we had a great time and fell in love.
Such a sweet memory which the lyrics of this song bring to life with how I felt about her. Thanks L.R!
My gosh ... this song is even better then when I use to listen to it 41 years ago ... wow
This song really brings back the best of memories.
I used to hear this song on a NY radio station called CD 101 FM in the mid eighties. I didn't know it came out in 1981. Wow. It sounds timeless.
It is....
Loved CD 101.9
My memory might not be correct, but I think WQCD/CD101.9 signed on when WPIX-FM changed from their “nothing but love songs” format to “cool” or smooth jazz....sometime between 1987 or ‘88 if memory serves me right. But even before that official change, WPIX had become a steady home for artists like Lee Ritenour, George Benson, Pat Matheny, and Steely Dan to finally have their music heard on a regular basis.

I listened to this on the radio today for the first time. When this came out I wasn't born yet.
I love this.
Someone's just outside, knocking at my door
A stranger, somebody unknown
Someone's in my dreams, can't get it off my mind yeah
I'm tired of being alone
Someone's trying to find an easy way inside
Come on, I'm right here at home, right at home
Is it you?
Is it you?
Is it you?
Is it you?
Who's that deep inside me, sneaking around my heart?
Are you somebody in love?
Show me what you're doing and tell me who you are
Hey! I'm ready for love, for love.
Is it you?
Is it you?
Is it you?
Is it you?
If it's you, come out in the open
You don't need to hide your love
If it's you, you know I'm hoping
'Cause it's way too late to run away
Don't run away from love, my love
Is it you?
[Instrumental]
Is it you, knocking at my door?
Is it my imagination?
Is it you, I can't get off my mind?
Is it you, you, you?
Is it you, sneaking around my heart?
Is it my imagination?
Is it you, I can't get off my mind?
You, you, you?
