Hello Damari ! being honest we´re so proud, because we made a good choice. by listening to this wonderful smooth-jazz coming from heaven. I´m a real jazz-fan since 1981 when I met George Benson with his "Lady" from the Breezin album. Later a friend introduced me to the world of Dave Grusin with "She could be mine" from the L.P,. "Out of the shadows" and I was shocked. SInce then I listen to the jazz in all its variations. This world of jazz gives me everything. There are lots of excelent musicians. I´m a Mexican citizen. Beginning in 1981 with this jewel. Congratulations for your good choice !. God bless you !
Was 17 in 1980, but in 1983 I was stationed in San Diego and there was a jazz show called “Art Goods Late night San Diego”. He introduced me to all of these incredible artists already mentioned in the comments to the OP. For me Art Good turned me on to more musicians than anyone else…. And I was a band guy playing the sax. Dave G led to the GRP all stars… so then comes Dave Valentine, Marcus Miller, SADAO WATANABE!!, McCoy Tyner, Ramsey Lewis, Return To Forever, etc. But this song and this album…. Man what a classic.
From 1979 I waa a DJ and in these days contemporary jazz (as it was named around that time) found a way into my life. The Crusaders, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, George Benson, Ronnie Laws (who had done the original one of this), Bob James, Stanley Clarke, Grover Washington Jr., Spyro Gyra, Chuck Mangione, Rodney Franklin, Weather Report, and many orhers did tracks which I played everytime when we opened the club at 8.00 pm. Some became dance tracks like Street Life or Friends and Strangers after a few times because the crowd loved them. I'll never forget these opening hours and in 1995 I found my way back to the nowadays called Smooth Jazz. The older 70's and 80's tracks aren't forgotten and between 1986, where I stopped being a professional DJ and 1995 there were sometimes these jazz musicians, but man in 1995 I realized how I missed this smooth atmospheric music and from then on it never stopped being a big part. Today I'm proud to know many musicians of this style, proud to shake hands and have a chat with them and see them live! It's the music which make my life soo wonderful!
I remember getting this album in the mid 90s after I walked past a guy playing it at a flea market in Zimbabwe. I loved the music and had to ask. Im a 78 born thorough hip hop head and was loving the funk of this. I laughed when He gave me the CD and theres a white cowboy dude on the cover. I thought I was being conned for a minute ha ha.
Groups like Dave's, Chuck Mangione, Spyra Gyra, David Benoit, George Benson and Al Jarreau had me mellow as heck during my college days. I still listen to them today. #legends
Hi! that´s it Arthur. i like most of your groups. I began listening smooth jazz at 104.1 Mhz in Mexico Cilty the year 1981. George Benson, Dave Grusin and Spyro Gyra are part of them. i¨m so proud of it. Take care
This was played religiously in the background each Sunday afternoon during the early eighties as I cleaned and organised my cherished bedroom at my lovely parents home in Tottenham, still together in health and love. Brenda Russell, Merry Clayton (When the world trns blu), and Gene Dunlap among many other wonderful music shaped my image, brain network... and me into the 58 yrs I am today.
Tottenham in London? If so, I lived in Edmonton just up the road from you. I used to listen to lots of pirate stations around that time too. Never had it so good.
Listened to this all thru college back in the 80s; would play it in my car too; reminds me of waking up on the weekend in the dorm at the University of Hawaii.....look out and see that blue ocean, it was awesome haha!
This song took me back to a certain period in my life when I heard the other day….😢…..My heart was touched. I tried guessing the year because it did something to my soul….Freshman in college….oh my.❤

I first heard this in 1997 on the radio, I've searched for years trying to find this song but all I had was the beat, no artist or song name. I just found the Ronnie Laws version and recognize the beat, and searched for the cover version and this was it. Sooo happy to find all versions of this song.
The same with me too I first heard this song when I was 13 years old in 2005 and again in 2007 when I was 15 and what really sick I came was to beat in the groove and the rhythm of the song and then this year in 2020 I felt like hearing some old school jazz and then I heard Ronnie laws version of this song and then put in the name title and then Dave grusin version came up Small World right

Harvey Mason. Was using Yamaha drums back then if I'm not wrong. Snare could be a Yamaha or a Ludwig. Similar to Gadd. In fact I thought it was Gadd playing on this album.
Who stopped by here in April, 2024? Rolling back the years.
I first heard this album in 1981, and I have been in love with jazz ever since. I was 32 then, now I'm 72. Love love love jazz.

This is a Ronnie Laws cover.
Didn't both version come out the same year or am I mistaken?
Ronnie Laws' version was released in 1977 - three years earlier than Dave Grusin's

I agree... both versions are sublime......Ronnie Laws version is more raw and organic..... This ones more polished.....my opinion.
Yes I like Ronni Laws
Nice version, it is very reminiscent of the disco. But the horns in the original version still tugs at the hairs on the back of my neck. 😩
Both have wicked bass lines but I'll take Ronnie Laws 👍🏽
@Sassy you are hearing the 80's disco beats, this is slightly modern....Ronnies is different but rich natural melodies from 70's funk

Ronnie Laws followed up with a cover of Friends and Strangers.
And of course, Dave Grusin!
What a surprise! When I first saw the picture of Dave Grustin, I thought I was gonna hear a country western song. LOL for real 😂😂😂😂✌️
That's why should never judge a book by its cover.
Hi there. My comment, isn't intentional. As I am genuinely surprised.
He hit the infamous lean pose on his album cover! You knew it was going to be fire! 😂
this was my go to album in 1980 it's still Smooth Jazz in 2022 🎹 🎸 🎵
Brings me back to when I was a High School Senior...lots of memories!!
Jazz for me began here!! In Malaysia something new & impossible!! But after listening to this.. Cant find this original album on Spotify.
Great jam love this version. Bass bass
They played this on the Weather Channel back in the early 80's.
As good a representation of West Coast Jazz as you can get, it's laid back, mellow, and technically polished.
I heard this on Watercolors on Sirrius Radio today. I'm from Pittsburgh, Pa. I just love the song and now I'll be looking for more of Dave Grusin's music.
That snare drum sound though.
Harvey Mason. Was using Yamaha drums back then if I'm not wrong. Snare could be a Yamaha or a Ludwig. Similar to Gadd. In fact I thought it was Gadd playing on this album.
Definitely has a distinctive sound
Nothing like Steve Gadd...it's unmistakably Harvey Mason...a fatter and more solid groove than gadd could manage
@@kevinmanns7170 No doubt, you nailed it.
Harvey and Marcus together, doesn't get much better, in my opinion.
The way Harvey grooves man .
inspirational for us drummers
I wonder if Dave G knew it was a theme tune in the UK for the Robbie Vincent Soul/Funk show. Iconic!!!!
Robbie Vincent no1 dj
