@@jankla4419 I have seen them live and you are right and why I made a post saying these guys should cover Made in Japan. Best Live album ever recorded.
In 1970 while on a tour bus, a reporter was on board. He asked the boys how they write songs. Ritchie picked up a guitar and strummed a G chord over and over. Ian improvised lyrics over the guitar. They arrive at the venue for sound check. They perfect the new song during sound check and performed it live that night. That was Highway Star. That's real excellence in musicianship.
They didn't perfect it. But they did get the basic bones of the thing settled. There is a recording from a show few weeks later, and the lyrics are still not down. With Gillian la la through a few bits. The fact they kept an incomplete song on the set list shows they knew they had something really special in that song
Believe it or not, but they actually wrote this song while on their way to a show and performed it that very night. Simply incredible considering the fact that this is one of their best songs in their catalogue. Also, that guitar solo is something else and Ritchie Blackmore is legendary.
It all started when some reporter asked them "how do you guys come up with a song?" and Blackmore just stared at him playing the one chord over and over
One thing I love about purple, to this day, is that the performances are very "on the spot". Yes, they are reharsed, yes they are similar and well thought out, but they are there in the moment, gillan messes the lyrircs, the guitars do a bit of improv... It just always feel, as said by ryan, fun and fresh.
The whole Machine Head album is ace start to finish, it’s bluesey, funky, rocking.. Richie Blackmore the guitarist is held in very heigh regard with other guitarists. His tone, taste of lick, and is the king of vibrato.
The guy playing the organ on this song later admitted that the notes played in 11:34 was a mistake but he played that little "lick" twice so that it sounded like it was intentional. That is PURE genius.
THAT is why perfection is the enemy of good. We look forward to that part - call it an Easter egg, human flaw, whatever - that doesn't exist on grid-built, digitally corrected shite that passes for music today.
The story of the song is that Deep Purple on their tour in the bus got asked how they wrote their songs and they did this one straight of the bat sitting in the bus ..so it is very straight forward
@@johnboylan3591 Jon Lord actually says he did happen but the version they played that night was not the same as the one they eventually recorded. I have the DVD with it on
In 1970 this was speed metal, sometimes your perspective is so obviously unbiased, fresh, and dead wrong, it makes this channel awesome. The Twist? What?! Love it
I was lucky enough to see them with this lineup in 1984 on the Perfect Strangers tour. They were flawless. The whole band in this incarnation was stacked. Jon Lord on keys was stunning live.
I saw Faith No More in Columbus in the early 2000's and they played Highway Star 6 times during their set. It was both awesome and hilarious. (6 times may be an over exaggeration, but they played it a lot of times fully and partially.) Great song!
I'm not sure I fully understand George's reaction here - he hears the incredible musicianship, he states that they "killed it" yet he isn't really feeling it! He says he's heard it all before, but Purple is playing at a level very few can match, and the drive and tempo of the song had both George and Ryan rocking out to it.....George should come back to it, I'll bet he would have a different take.
You described the solo very well, and you also described the whole problem with solos in heavier music in general. One of the biggest "strengths" of those early hard rock/heavy metal bands was they weren't trying to - impress - they were trying to - express - themselves. Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page - they mastered guitar playing so that they can create better music and art. Many guitarists get this wrong, and they confuse playing guitar to make music with playing guitar to push the boundaries of what you can do physically with it. That being said, I also like some hardcore shredding lol, but the levels of those early masters of guitar are something else.
I can tell Ryan was really feeling this. Imo one of the best, simple, but best guitar solos of all time. Ritchie Blackmore. This came out in the early early 70’s, so I can only imagine how fresh this must have been, especially that chugga chugga. Burn is another great song I would recommend.
Ritchie Blackmore is your favourite guitar player's favourite guitar player. For me he is the OG shredder, technical and yet so damn musical. He really had it all.
A couple of spectacular Purple songs from the early 70s are Fireball and Speedking. Both very heavy songs, but Fireball is especially heavy, thrashy and fast, with a very classical music sounding keyboard solo. And the drums in fireball are the some of the best I've heard. Give those two a listen guys.
Thank you! Fireball = speed metal 8 years before there was a name for speed metal. I love Bonham, Peart, etc., but it's criminal how seldom Ian Paice is mentioned as one of the greats.
Brilliant musicians. One of the best vocalists, drummers, and and keyboardists in rock. And the guitarist and bass player were no slouches either. Ian Paice is my all time favorite drummer. He was a monster but always tasteful. His playing always served the song, not his own ego.
About time you got to the greatest "driving song" ever written and recorded! Good to see you doing some classic rock again. You are missing so many legendary tracks and groups! Fascinating that you couldn't get into it. Not sure if you ever heard their song "Burn," but you should try that. It's probably their most amazing song, with some of the best drumming you'll ever hear in a hard rock song, but who knows -- maybe you'll hate it?
Purple are such a great band, I've known and loved their music since I was like eight years old. Superb musicians and such a tight and creative unit, across many changes of players!
You two had your "stank" faces on! this was in 1972, after listening to my older sisters Beatles for years (which I love), Deep Purples Machine Head was my first album purchase. I've been rockin out since.

It’s only when you got deep into their Catalog that you discovered their less known bangers like Snowblind, sweet leaf and Into the Void. Same way with Deep Purple there are many songs for you guys to discover like Lazy, Burn, Speed King, Mistreated, Black night to name a few. Then I would love to hear your analysis. But good reaction
Guys, check this out, the chord changes surrounded by drum licks sound like the driver changing gears of the car on the highway, sometimes speeding up, sometimes slowing down, like on curves or passing other cars on the road
This song was on a racing game called Rock N Roll Racing which I played on SNES early 90s as a kid. It was the first version of the song I heard and have loved it ever since.
This track is a classic all time song by Deep Purple and it contains some of the first early shred guitar and shred organ soloing. The whole band was on fire. Also Ian G on the vocals hitting those high notes is so awesome and he influenced so many rock and metal vocalist who came later. Glad you guys like the track \m/
7:21 Yes this was in a video game, but not a racing game. This was the song that was played in the intro for the original Rock Band. Funny thing: The intro was a scene of a group of people playing on a car while they were driving.
