I grow my cane in a 10’ x 10’ patch with fence posts at the corners and then wrap it with fencing wire to hold up the canes. We leave a small gap in one corner so we can get inside to harvest.
I retired from a company that grows 1000s of acres of cane. It is generally a 3 year crop in that it comes back each year but sugar content begins to decline after year 3. It's basically a swamp grass so it prefers a lot of water and a lot of sun. It doesn't tolerate cold well so it grows best in Florida with LA, MS, and TX growing a good bit. The area around Lake Okeechobee is where the majority of US sugar is grown so that's where the biggest sugar mills are located. I have grown it in Central Alabama in small batches like yours but I don't know how far north it can be grown.

Jody, I was given a few cuttings from some Jamaican sugar cane several years back...it grows so much bigger than other cane varieties! I was pressing nearly 1/2 gallon of juice per stalk. 100 canes gave 50 gallons of juice that cooked down into 8 gallons of syrup. Awesome stuff.

I’ve been picking up the sugarcane on the interstate that the cane trucks drop. I grow it for fun and as a cultural crop. It seems wasteful to just leave it. 🙂 (Louisiana)
My daughter lived in Thibodaux for 12 years. On visits I would see pieces on side of roads and wanted to do that too. They live here in Texas now so I regret I didn’t.
I love this idea of planting sugar cane in hills! Here in Northwest Arkansas, I have to over winter my sugar cane in pots in the greenhouse. I'm going to try this in the spring and will enjoy following along with you. I do grow some sorghum here every year for grain and syrup. Really have enjoyed your channel!
Danny I was wondering why you don't plant them sugar canes near the edge of the pond? In Florida they pretty much grow it in the everglades in marshy areas, with cats tails encirling 75% of them surrounding them all , it helps to cut down on wind damage from storms! Just a thought!
Like what you're doing with the cane! My friend has some old time hand me down cane from way back in the day he got from an old timer he has offered me some. I'm going to try this it would also look nice planted that way. Should look good around the High tunnel the way you spaced it!
Have you guys tried growing sugar beets? Here in western Colorado, it gets too cold for sugar cane, so I've been thinking about trying to grow a row or two of sugar beets. Farmers around here used to grow a lot of them. According to Wikipedia, "sugar beets grow exclusively in the temperate zone, in contrast to sugarcane, which grows exclusively in the tropical and subtropical zones." Wiggins may be hotter than "temperate", I don't know. When I was a kid, my parents were evangelical dental missionaries to South Africa, where the farmers grow quite a bit of sugar cane. I remember how much we kids liked to suck the sugar juice out of the raw sugar cane. It was a real treat! God bless you guys and keep you safe and healthy!
If you got the climate you could plant sweet sorghum instead. Good dual purpose crop you can press and cook for syrup and then use as supplementary feed for livestock

Your 60 something year old back and knees must be better than mine ! I’d have used that loader bucket to haul stuff to the hogs unless your sugar cane is right next to it. Great idea you’ve come up with I’m interested in how it turns out!
