15 year old punk here. I love Jimmy Shand! His tunes were the best, and I'm the only one at my school who enjoyed the dancing. Very simple and fun. A shame it's dying out with my generation.
You are one very talented lady and I just love this tune and the way you play it on that lovely toned accordion and hope to hear you play other tunes in the future.many thanks.
My Father was a Fife accordionist and Mr and Mrs Shand often visited in later life. I started playing drums semi professionally at age 12. I learned on strict tempo, Scottish Traditional, Jazz and Ballroom and graduated to Rock n Roll and later Rock Classics. When a band plays an Eightsome Reel strictly speaking it lasts around twenty minutes. Then it should be followed by a Foursome Reel which also lasts around the same time. Only for the toughest of dancers!! (and Drummers!!!)
This dance has got to be the best, plenty energy and alcohol, everybody flying about, by the end of it, especially if it's about 40 folk long, everybody has a stitch and is near dripping with sweat 😂
2nd tune "Old Adam." Shand plays many pipe tunes and he composed at least one, Kirkwall Bay. As a long ago Grade 1 contest piper I can say it's a joy to play on pipes, and to hear. It sounds very Shand.
This reminds me of a ceilidh, where my 6 feet tall, athletic friend took his favorite wee lassie up for strip the willow. He spun her round so quickly and energetically that the poor girl ended up being thrown clean off her feet. She landed in a crumpled heap on the dance floor, shaken but thankfully not hurt. I wish I could say I didn't find it funny, but it gave us a wee chuckle at the time. I guess that was almost 30 years ago, eek!
She will be coming around the Mountain riding six white horses when she comes. Those six white horses were pulling a cart with a long black box in it. I remember singing this song a many a time when I was just a bairn growing up. My granny could make her guitar strings smoke playing this song as well when she played it on her Auto-harp with her goose quill. The old ways died with the old folks here in Northeast Tennessee and Western North Carolina Appalachian mountain region. Yes there is Virginia but 🙄😮😮😮
All very well, but it's not the real Jimmy Shand. It's his son and he is not interested in fans cos he does not want to go in the footsteps of his father. In initiated circles it is known.Sadly!!

It's not a proper ceilidh if you don't end up with some bruises!

If you look closely at the video, you will see that Jimmy Shand Senior IS playing with the band.
@@jasonhill6170 Always possible.Senior often was in company with him.
Junior in the middle, senior on the right. Hamish Smith on the left, who still plays with Sandy Nixon these days, I think?
