I just realised that the "hyper realistic" trope in Creepypasta started with Squidwards Sewer Slide, and that its inclusion in the story is a reference to how the show would often do uncomfortable, high detail close ups. So it originally had relevance to the story, and then just got used as a random trope in other stories. Wow!
Classic example of "ripping off a popular thing without understanding why it worked"
EXACTLY I love that.
I always hated those gags. Especially in Ren & Stimpy.
Yeah I figured that's all it was ever referring to - I don't know if I ever saw it in other creepypastas myself. I have limited experience with this kind of creepypastas and really all of them but I did see this format vaguely repeated to the point I was wondering how easy it was to copy/paste the format ad nauseum with everything in TV Guide.

As someone else pointed out, Ben Drowned was never meant to be consumed in the format of a creepypasta. There's an entire element of the story completely missing in that it was a true ARG, an Alternate Reality Game. It was an interactive mystery unfolding on the internet in realtime. Readers were able to interact with the story, which would reveal new information and progress things along. For instance, readers could submit videos of ocarina songs from the game to various effect such as "time travel" within the narrative and changing the outcome of events. Consuming the story as strictly a creepypasta is like (to use a videogame analogy) reading a raw text compilation of all of the expository notes one might find in a horror game, but not actually playing the game itself and still expecting to get the full experience or understanding of the story.
This really ought to be rated higher

I think the reason Ben Drowned is still seen with such high regard is that most people assumed that the text document is supplimenary material because thats how it comes off as in the context of the story, so people just ignore it, not realizing that its not actually supplementary material but instead the horrible ending of the story
lets just ignore the supplementary material so we can be happy
What horrible ending? Am I missing something? The author totally lost the plot of their own story, got trolled by a cyber-goomba, and then got away? Or do you mean literally a horrible ending as in, and I agree, the garbage and unsatisfying end to a decent start?
@@Blisterdude123 What are you talking about, there's only one reasonable interpretation to what he said
@@pbthroggy Clearly not, which do you think then?
Actually the whole "Story" is supplemental material. People read the creepypasta nowadays and don't understand why people used to like it, but that's because people look at it AS a creepypasta now. Ben Drowned was always an ARG, and the creepypasta was a small part of that. This guy appeared on a forum and posted about these things happening to him, and the creator made actual videos with "proof" of his story, and then the community had to interact with the story and make decisions that would cause certain characters to live or die, and affect the outcome of the narrative. It was an extremely cool and ambitious project that only ended back in like 2020. People have compiled the original posts and cut out everything else to turn it INTO a standalone creepypasta but that was never the intention. Which leaves holes in the story where you wonder why certain things are said when they're actually more important later.
I think it's just weird for people to say they don't understand why people think it's quality based solely on the writing when the writing itself was never the main focus of the story
Hunter screaming "YESSSS" at squidward killing himself is actually so funny
I love how when Hunter mentions drowning, Isaiah turns into Clancy saying: "Now how did you know that?"
The reason why Isaiah has such fond memories of Ben Drowned vs. what it actually is is because back in early YT gaming and internet days I don't recall a single person ever mentioning the diary file, cleverbot, or the weird ARG forum stuff. I was unaware of any of that stuff until Nexpo's dramatization of the story.
And ironically, nobody "finishing" the story was for the better. It kept Ben Drowned as this cool bit of internet and Zelda fan urban legend about a cartridge haunted by a kid's ghost, rather than as the cringey, boring, and lame slog that the author intended. Bro made a "masterpiece" on accident, and then ruined it by telling the story he actually wanted to tell.
Good to know the one mainstream creepypasta I actually liked during the whole peak of the craze is actually just as bad most of the others. Feels _great._
Yeah same, all I remembered of the story was the first part and the videos. I never saw any of the Cleverbot or notes stuff. Ugh lol
Yeah, when Wendigoon said he didn't remember certain parts, I knew they must have made it to the ARG portions that were done later.
Honestly, even the early cleverbot stuff were a lot...better in the time. Cleverbot was a play off real weird behavior people were briefly fascinated by on Cleverbot. But maaan does the whole arg get funky.
Sad thing is it was so genuine at first, most of us had never seen a romhack of it s caliber, and it began as one of the first of those really effective 'game creepy things' and it really falls apart.
Nexpo's whole thing is fascinating though.
@@WereScrib he handled it in a way that came off far less cringe than the actual text document. I would say "oh he delivered it more seriously", but he did also omit some of the more yap-heavy parts of it.
@@warbossgegguz679 Yeah, the text doc is honestly sad that such a historically important like, piece of weblore is most often going to be experienced via it. Since, ya know it was a long series of posts, 'secret' and hidden information, and while the writing of alot of the 'secret' stuff was considerably lamer, you were automatically more forgiving of it as you had to investigate to get access to it.
If you put a lot of effort into something, having the weird secrets revealed was at least some kind of reward, even if the writing was meh.
I can't believe that Wendigoon was possessing a game cartridge the entire time, classic goon moment.

On the bright side, at least they had the good sense to end it at Part 1 of this story. Parts 2 and 3 (the forum ARG and 2020 web series, respectively) completely go off the rails and reveal that Ben is a human consciousness scanned and uploaded into Majora's Mask by a tech company trying to create an artificial afterlife as their flagship product. And also the tech company might be controlled by a cult that worships the moon or something, and there's a hotel full of people trapped in purgatory who can't really die? I don't even remember lol

I actually had to listen to that again, because yes. It never once occurred to these men that the most obvious thing, the family who lived there before that guy left a box of their kids' toys, so that's why he has them. @@colesnead4061 I'm aware. I don't mean that's what happened in the story, I said that given very little information at the time, Isaiah and Hunter both went off the rails with their theories of what the old man meant when that explanation was the most logical.

@@therancidpizzabox2977sometimes retconning can work but the best retcons add something to the world and characters, whilst the worst retconns take away.

This is a weird thing to say, but Ben Drowned was basically saved by the early internet's lack of attention span. Prior to Nexpo's video and this I had 0 idea about the cleverbot crap or ARG elements or any of that, and just knew the story as a creepy urban legend about a dude who got a haunted cartridge and uploaded cursed gameplay everyone could watch. And from my experience that's what basically everyone who was on the internet in the early 2010s knew of Ben Drowned.

And yeah, the cleverbot stuff and ARG are cringe af, and I wish I could go back to not knowing they exist.
The conversation around the 42 minute mark where they were discussing how it feels to get a used game cartridge is something I can relate to. I'm a huge Transformers fan, and recently I bought one of the novels off of Amazon (only 1 in stock, it was an individual seller I believe). It was used, and the previous owner had clearly been very interested in the book-- there were lore-important phrases and passages underlined and/or bracketed, even left a written note once, up until like page 25 or something where the page was dog-eared/folded down. There was no writing or underlining past that mark. It feels almost sacred. I left that page folded down to this day and I don't plan on unfolding it any time soon. Idk who had the book before me but they seem to have been a very invested fan of the series that must have just lost interest one day or couldn't keep the book for whatever reason. Like Hunter said-- it's not quite nostalgia, but it's kind of similar. As I mentioned before: it's almost sacred.
Or, you know, the obvious alternative: It's a very feely feeling. A feeling you can feel, very feely.
I love getting used books for this exact reason! There's such a special feeling of seeing all the notes/reactions left written in the margins, or even finding post it notes inside. I always keep everything I find, it feels like I'm letting a part of that person live on in some way
Yes, exactly!! And in my case it felt so cool and heartwarming to basically be made aware that someone else out there, somewhere in the world, was just as invested in this fictional world as I am, maybe even more if that's possible lol. Kind of felt like I was continuing the legacy of another fan. I've even considered picking up where they left off, leaving my own notes in the book. That way, maybe some day long in the future, I can pass that book to someone else and they can feel the same way I did.
But y'know, I also have a tendency to get really emotionally attached to inanimate objects, so I can't foresee myself ever selling the book, but if for some reason I did...
With this realization of hunter liking shorter leaner stories and how much he dislike the last SCP meat, it gives an idea what going on with SCP quality as of late and writers trying to outwrite each other, trying to be the next "the flesh that hates" which leaves casual readers behind.
Yeah, everything feels like a giant, complex novel now. There's still some good stuff, but less then there was before.
Pretty much, everything is either some convoluted reality bender object class: Omega somehow connected to the scarlet king, something based on the OGs or SCP-6969 object class: amogus, the rizzler of ohio
That's all that the Wiki will accept now, try and post something short, it won't get accepted.
I blame this mostly on the moderation for the site leaning towards that stuff, since to get an scp actually added to the wiki you have to go through HEAVY scrutiny and moderation from other people when you suggest it. I'm sure people actually want to write those shorter ones, and I'm sure shorter sweeter ones have probably made it to the wiki since I last checked, but unfortunately that kid of stuff isn't in Vogue right now over there which makes me so upset

I would love this!!
Maybe for works that are clearly based off samething. Otherwise it would undermine the hard work of the makers. They tend to compare stories and such anyways in their video anyways. So maybe!
Considering how unoriginal and cliche most old creepypastas are, this is actually a great idea lol
Borasca vs Jeff The Killer would be wild
I love Hunter’s manic laughter at the ‘DO IT’ part
Nothing makes me laugh harder than Hunter yelling. The clip of him on Wendis stream yelling "PLEASE DON'T GIVE OUT YOUR CARD INFORMATION" still makes me laugh every time
many old school creepypastas had the "entity spreads through internet now you are cursed" chain mail vibe
I like the idea of Stephen Hillenburg going “NO, SQUIDWARD WOULD NEVER…well”
"But maybe..."
I feel like if the network allowed it, it would become the new running gag for Squidward
@@TheRoyalOroraKenny from South Park treatment
Please keep doing more of these, always thought Ben Drowned and Squidward's Chop Suey were cringe and I loved getting to hear y'all experience them

Oh doesn't care
Yooooo thats wild, grats man
i’ve only listened through spotify so i thought the story was genuinely named normal corn for normal people and i was SO intrigued
I tend to look away from the video so I thought the same thing…yummy crunchy sweet corn~
I love when my corn comes with blood thirsty chimps 🤣
yeah I was thinking, "what could possibly be abnormal about regular corn?"
It's actually weird how the title "normal corn for normal people" is interesting the more you think about it. It works to get your attention and make you wonder what creepy things could be done that include corn 😂
@@IsThisUsernameAvailable this, I was really looking forward to a story about corn, while listening it didn't down on me the website wasn't about corn until the first explicit vignette, I was still thinking they were weird corn ads at a corn selling website
I highly suggest “The Orangutans Are Skeptical of Changes in Their Cages”, Hunter’s voice would be perfect for the characters in it.
That one’s equally haunting and goofy. I think they’d get a kick out of it if nothing else!
Oh that's a good one!
"I just deleted your game files" gave me flashbacks to the hell that was sharing a game with my little sister back in the day. 🤣
Dude, it didn't happen to me, but to my Mom. She 100% completed Mario Kart DS back in the day, mission modes and everything, and then our roommate's younger kid (3 or 4, maybe) deleted the file. That shit haunts her to this day, and I don't blame her
me, age tween-somewhere, had maybe 75-something hours into diablo 2, had just reached the level in the game where my witch could summon fire hydras,
-my brother, 5-somewhere, tried to play, didn't know how to read yet, deleted my character,
i didn't touch the game for over a decade, maybe closer to 15 years,
-brother and me played through it together after we got bored with diablo 3
As someone who hasn’t heard of the first story and listens to the podcast, it took quite a while before I realized it wasn’t about actual corn lmaoo
Corn is a point of view Anakin.
LOL ME TOO
Pornholio
Broo i was only listening and until I looked at the screen and saw the actual word I was going in to the story thinking it was about some fucked up farm or something
I was already laughing at _he put his hands (tentacles)_ when hunter started doing a perfect squidward crying impression. I'm in stitches!
32:33 idk which one is funnier..Hunter's voice impression of Wendi or Wendigoon forgetting there's drowned in the name of the story or Wendigoon's face at the end but i laughed so fcking hard LMAOOOO
Hunter being absolutely traumatized by Borrasca it's so funny to me 😭 like, SAME DUDE, but for some reason every time he gets all jumpy for the mere mention of kids in danger makes me cackle every time lmao 😭
I didn’t know I needed to hear Hunter doing a Squidward crying impression but I absolutely did
Hunter comparing the deletion of saved files to the erasment of memories, or further, a soul is fascinating to me. Beyond just a creepy story kind of way, in a philosophical way. In a real way, that was a part of someone, and it's simply gone forever. Time and memories lost that can never be retrieved, at a press of a button.
It is indeed interesting
Yeah i sometimes think about the fact that someday the only proof of your online existance might be on the hands of a songle server closing forever, apps an data disappearing
That is how it felt.
Whoever had that game before you had their own personal, private experience with it, different to yours. Sure maybe they were just mucking around on it, but maybe they were invested in the story and characters and then at some point they just... weren't.
RIP TEC from Paper Mario TTYD
Hunter's impression of Squidward crying was the laugh I needed today.
It's so uncanny 😭
The only reason why I can listen to Creep Cast alone at night is the hilarious moments that you guys create. This has quickly become my favorite thing to listen to😊😊 love you guys!❤
when i was younger i had avoided watching any Squidwards suicide videos because i heard that it was super scary and that it was cursed. I didn't realize it would be so goofy lmaooo
Bro same.
I first heard the Jeff the Killer story from Internet Historian, so I 100% thought they were reading some cringey fanfiction someone made about Jeff The Killer. Holy fuck though. 🤣

You mention that you guys think the user suggestions are not the greatest, but I really enjoy reading some stories that have problems. I don't see this podcast as being just horror narrations, I see this channel as being literature analysis and critiques. When you read stories that have issues and dissect why they don't work narratively, I really enjoy that as you're basically teaching the audience how to write better. The Jeff The Killer episode might be my favorite since y'all really tear into it and explain the multitude of writing issues it has which I find to be educational while also being fun. Basically, please read bad stories every now and then.
A feely feeling now resides in my vernacular 😂
Commenting to agree and boost!
I agree. I think as long as there’s a good balance between well written and bad written stories it’s good. It makes it more interesting in my opinion.
yeah!!!
On top of that I mean a lot of the big horror reading channels read bad stories all the time and then don't emote or make any critiques or comments, destroying any interest i had with the story regardless of quality.
I really love Creep Cast for its asides and jokes and commentary because even if the story is bad they make it fun
Absolutely obsessed with Hunter’s “Ben/computer” voice
Including the footage of Ben Drowned along with the story for this episode? Chef's kiss. That helped A LOT
The computer voice from Hunter is the best moment of the whole catalogue so far
Can I just say that putting the fan art and memes at the end of the video is so fun. Really brings back early horror let's play RUclips vibes. Also you guys should read 'it taps on my window'!
You know, as a kid it never registered how outlandish the entire breakdown scene for Squidward was. I always just imagined Squidward doing a normal quiet sob.
…That was until Hunter showed me how that scene would ACTUALLY sound like, and the creepiness is just gone 😂
Also Hunter cheering for the death of a cartoon cephalopod is not something I had on my bingo book
The immediate heel turn on Squidward's sewer slide where Squidward pulls out the shotty and Hunter just starts pogging
2:28:36
Mr. Hillenburg: Why’d you guys call me down here?
Staff: Erm….…you’re gonna want to see this. 😳
just wanna say hearing you guys laugh at squidward's sewerslide actually pulled me out of a rough depressive slump
I'm overstepping my bounds as usual but I'd caution against that as a supplement for psychological or emotional help. I don't even think I'm in a really bad spot right now, but it's all too easy for me and people like me to get too lost in whatever stuff to feel and think through the fundamental effectors that shape our lives and affect them for the better. Not that we can't have fun, it's just only ever going to get more important to withdraw and process in an age of increasing complexity. I hope you figure stuff out
hope you’re doing okay man♥️

The Squidward crying was way too good.

Tbh I thought the Ben Drowned story was originally like a Lovely Bones situation, where he's trying to explain how he died through the game because his killer was never brought to justice. I thought the old man plot was going somewhere, and he was represented by the mask salesman. Ben being malevolent and weird disappointed me so hard in comparison to where I thought it was going lol
It's not Ben talking. The story is not supernatural. It seems a lot of people didn't realize this. The story is grounded in reality, the old man hacked the cartridge and put a virus on his computer and is trolling him. That's why he keeps asking if he got scared while playing and is just in general trolling him
Yeah, I thought it was going to be one of those "uncovering an unfair murder"... or that the old man lured the kid with the game, killed him, and kept it as a "trophy". Hence, using the game to communicate what happened... I guess I missed out on the ARG part.
@@coletrainhetrick That would be a fun theory if the official Part 2 and Part 3 continuations (the forum ARG and 2020 web series) didn't confirm this is 100% a supernatural story. Saying it goes off the rails is an understatement lol
@@coletrainhetrick You're correct in that it's not Ben talking but wrong about everything else. It's not Ben, yes. It's BEN. Ben and BEN and two separate, distinct entities. Ben was in fact a child who suffered a cruel fate at the hands of a cult (which he was a member of), all he wanted in life was to be just like his favorite protagonist, Link, and he ended up becoming just that but in an extremely twisted way. BEN however is a malevolent entity the name of which stands for Behavioral Event Network, it's an amalgamation of several other beings whose consciousness was also transported inside the cartridge. BEN is the malevolent entity tormenting Jadusable, not Ben.
