My great aunt had a house in the boonies, and I remember her telling us to get inside when it started getting dark - no flashlight tag at her house! She would tell us the screams were “haints” (like evil spirits, but with worse tempers). Kept all of the little kids in at night more effectively than being told we were hearing the voice of an animal.
