    I can't even imagine choosing twelve colors for one project. No wonder it took 3 hours. For a non knitter 3 hours in a yarn shop must seem like an eternity. Kudos to Ned for his patience.

    In traditional, 19th century-style (wool) rug hooking, we call that special color, "poison." It's meant to be a little snippet of unexpected color that adds a bit of spark to the work. It does, indeed, sing! 🎶 It's always a pleasure to watch your channel!

    When my children were too young to go to school I sewed more than knitted, and I’ve always loved antiques! One day, my 4 year old son recognized what direction we were going and yelled “ if you stop at the antique shop or that stinky fabric store, I’m jumping out of this car and running away!” Needless to say, but I went there alone from then on!

    I tend to buy single balls first and knit a sample square of it so I can put them side by side to see the effect of one colour with another .I have always had from being a small child a strong emotional connection to colour so this visual approach helps me to make my colourways sing. Love the channel ! It’s my Saturday morning treat with a cup of coffee, thank you so much .

    Having other crafters help with color choices is amazing. I turn to my aunt for a second opinion when choosing yarn. She does not knit or crochet, but she makes quilts. She spends a lot of time in fabric stores holding different colors, patterns, prints, textures together to see what is going to play well together. She says in the quilt world you are auditioning colors. Sometimes there are colors you love, but they still don't make the cut because it's just not the right color for the project. You'll find another project to use it in if you really love it. I love that it's called auditioning colors. Such a fun way to think about the process of choosing colors.

    So fun to see more about your Shetland trip and get an idea of the yarn from Jamieson's. Also fun to dream with you about the projects you will knit.
    Cracked me up when you talked about trying to make friends with sheep. Don't take it personally! My grandparents had a farm and so I was exposed to what 'working' livestock is like as opposed to hand raised pets. Livestock is closer to 'wildlife' than to pets. In other words, they are on the look out for danger and they don't trust people much. Why would you when contact means being herded around by a dog, run through chutes and thrown on your back to have your fleece buzzed off? But if you really would like to make friends, then go to one of the fiber festivals where many prized sheep are on hand or to a local farm with a small band of sheep who interact more closely with people. You're looking for sheep with names 😀.
    And finally, I was wondering if you have a Ravelry page for Ned's Weekender. I'd love to know how you got the neckline to be a bit less boat necked and also what yarn is used. Love the color!

    • @MakerMarkKnits
      @MakerMarkKnits  Месяц назад

      Haha thanks for the story about sheep! I haven't made a Ravelry project page for it yet - but I used Vivacious DK in color 805 Deep Forest and I didn't make any changes to the neck! The only adjustment I made was to make the body longer than the pattern called for.

    • @zoedoodle
      @zoedoodle Месяц назад

      @@MakerMarkKnits Sheep are silly. I used to help a local rancher during the lambing season and it was so fun to see the older lambs running and jumping in packs while their mothers were fed. Thanks for the info on the sweater. I was looking at the pattern and I'd forgotten that she made a Crew Weekender for those who wanted DK and a less boat neck. I make just have to give that a try after seeing how nicely the one you made looks.

    Mark, you and Ned are musicians, you sing, in choirs even! So that quote about a 'wrong colour', a colour that you don't like which can make a project sing should touch you to the core. I sing, in choirs even, and I delight in the times when the sop and I, alto/tenor, really 'clash' to then enjoy the resolve even more. (In our church choir - which should really be called a quartet - there is one of each voice, me being the alto in that case.) So make those sweaters sing, like you do, by using a colour that is not quite to your liking to make those sweaters really sing out! Love your videos BTW! 🎶❤️🎶

    When talking about the surprise color you might think of it in terms of story telling where “conflict” is what makes the story interesting. Perhaps in this case the word “tension” provides the correct level of interest without being too difficult. (Reading further in the comments, I like the use of poison as well).
    As a side note, on my Scotland trip we bought a lot of wool clothes (most in Stornaway on Lewis) and mailed our dirty clothes home because we weren’t worried about losing those. 😊

Sorry you keep having those internet trolls say nasty stuff. Part of society today it seems to be a keyboard narcissist.... . Thx for sharing all the colors and the patterns names. I have written down a few to go to my LYS and check out. I agree it is hard to decide on colors as they do look diff in person up-close and then from across the room, choosing the base color is also hard. That eesit color 120 is gorgeous! I have 1 hat waiting to be made, have had the yarn for a year...lol.... Also have some lower weighted cones to make a few pairs of patterned mitts. I can see now that some of the colors you guys have chosen would really accent the mitts I plan to make. I fell in love with colorwork years ago when I first started to knit. I am slowly getting better with each piece I make. I love Marie Wallin, Shetland woolweek patterns, and anything listed as Fair Isle.... I say just knit! Do what brings you joy! Happy knitting.

    I love this video, I’m usually choosing my Shetland wool colours from the website or the shade cards, so great to see the actual balls of yarn and how you put the colours together. The wonderful thing about Fairisle knitting is you can always find another project for the colours you decide to swop out, and as you have a shop near you selling Spindrift you get to see the colours before buying. Happy knitting, looking forward to seeing the vest and jumpers being made😊

    You could swatch the colours using the patterns on a panel just wide enough to accommodate one of the larger units it would give you a chance to look at the colour mixing overall a long swatch but worth it

    Love your yarn choices! But if for any reason you need more yarn, my local yarn shop, Heritage Spinning and Weaving in Lake Orion, carries the full line of both Shetland yarns. It is just a 3 hour drive away. Come and spend the day with us!

    I understand your admiration for Marie Wallin's fair isle patterns - I've made many of them myself including 2 of your planned pieces - and her colour and pattern management is superb. She created her own wool brand to add to that special understanding of working many colours with a lot of pattern and making it look cohesive and also beautiful. The colours in the photographs although lovely, don't do full justice to those colours. What I don't understand then, is why you just didn't buy her British Breeds wool, either when you were over in the UK or from somewhere like the Wooly Thistle in the US? I appreciate though that being in the middle of all that colour in Jamieson's must have been a mixture of overwhelming and absolutely fantastic!

    I enjoy you guys so much! I so wish you’d make it over to Toledo one day! I do love everything Shetland and it’s toothy yarn. Aren’t Jamieson’s colors amazing? I love your sweater choices, and I have to ask, has Ned learned to knit?

    What a great idea that vacuum pack bag is! I’m doing a week in Hungary in January with only a carry on bag and hope to take advantage of the exchange rate by stocking up on some yarn - do you have a recommended brand/type of vacuum seal bag that can be easily re-vacuumed while in the other country? Without a large vacuum sealer apparatus so it doesn’t take up too much space in the carry on

    • @MakerMarkKnits
      @MakerMarkKnits  2 месяца назад

      Your trip sounds wonderful! Taking advantage of the exchange rate is also a great idea 🙂 I purchased my vacuum bags on Amazon and chose a set that included a medium sized hand pump. The pump does take up some of my space, but I appreciated that I could tightly vacuum pack things without an actual vacuum!

      That's a great idea! I'll make a video for sure.
      To answer you now, Shetland is definitely toothy - and can feel scratchy or somewhat rough to the touch. I know lots of people choose to wear a layer between their knits and skin. This will be my first garment knit with Shetland wool, so I'll find out how it feels in my experience! So far, I think this wool feels fairly standard - but I'll report back as I'm knitting it up!

    Different parts of our brains are engaged in the first 15 minutes than in the 3rd hour. I challenge you to some day make something that you haven't researched. That you walk into a LYS, march up to a display and pick 5, 7, 9 colors to make into a scarf or cowl. Throw a little Stephen West in there. Maybe after a champagne brunch. I bet it would be amazing.
