Reckon the S50 will be on my Xmas list, prefer the longer focal length so you can get closer without cropping but still use the mosaic mode for wider shots, it’s also now £485 in UK so closer in price. Wish it had the newer sensor though.
My daughter asked me what l would like for my 70th birthday, without hesitation the ZWO Seestar 50. l enjoy astrophotograpghy and have my own self built observatory, the Seestar will be ideal for when we go on holiday abroad.
I’ve had the S50 for 9 months and have been delighted with the results, and I feel like I’ve got to know the night sky like never before. I’m interested to see the S30 but not interested in getting one, I think it is aimed at newcomers, not people who already have an S50. I hope ZWO are working on EQ mode, and I am sure they will be working on a bigger, higher resolution scope yet to be released. What a great time for astronomy and astrophotography!
As someone who isn’t a beginner in astrophotography but limited in time; the S50 has been a revelation. The accompanying software is well designed and very usable. Not always the case in astronomy. The game now is how much performance can I squeeze out of the little unit and pix.
I may wait for the s100, i havent decided. if I was to buy one right now it would probably be the s50, mainly because I think bigger is better. maybe paired with a 10" dob for the grandson to star hop with. UPDATE : Found a S50 at the local pawnshop, looks new in the box, $250 out the door. Going to give it a run tonight!

I have a S50. Seriously easy to setup and use! Been using it for a few months. Great fun but I do miss looking through a lens but then that progress I reckon. Great for newcomers to astronomy as it gives you a visual reference to what you're looking at and where in the night sky it is.
Just got my s50 in the mail today since the s30 isn't available yet. But apparently there is now a mosaic feature available for the s50 so I'm excited to get a night off work and clear skies!!! Thanks for putting all the work into such informative content.
A week or two ago, I decided to get the S50. It arrived 3 days ago, and all I can do is take scenery pictures with it. It's been overcast since the day it arrived and there doesn't look to be any clearing of the skies in the near future. No, rain and snow coming.
Thanks Damon. I'm 62 and my first scope was a Tasco 60mm refractor which has pretty bad optics but I learnt the night sky with it. My second scope was and still is a Meade etx 125. My third scope will be..... The s30. The etx provides superb views of planets and I love splitting double stars but is pretty bad at viewing deep sky objects. Hopefully the s30 (when it arrives) will fill the gap. Also travelling with such a small scope will be perfect. I've been lucky to view the southern sky from Aussie and the s30 will be perfect when I hopefully head south again.😅
Thanks for the side by side comparisons. I was wondering how their results compared. I didn't see anything that made me think I needed to buy the S30. Now if ZWO comes out with a better sensor and a bigger FOV without having to do a mosaic mode. ( I spent 2 hours to capture an hour of M31 in Mosaic mode.) I would probably buy it.

I was about to get an S50 which would be the first telescope I've had since i was a kid, 55 years ago, but then the S30 came out so I ordered that instead.. Won't be here for 2 months so hopefully it's worth the wait.

I just pre ordered the S30 and I cant wait. It will be my first smart scope and my first time being able to do deep sky. I have a Celestron NexStar 4SE which is my first decent telescope, but I really want to upgrade with a Carbonstar 150 and an EQ mount. Only issue is the price difference is quite extreme for what I want now
Nice comparison. I picked up an S50 a few weeks ago. It's convenient because I have three little kids. So, currently, I have little time and energy to set up and align a full imaging rig. The S50 helps me feel like I'm accomplishing some part of AP.
Why not make a small cardboard aperture stop and place it over the S30 and S50? It will cut down the brightness for planets. I do this with my 10" DOB and it lets you see more details on a planet's surface. Now, maybe you'd need to take longer exposures due to the S30/50's smaller aperture..? It would be a fun experiment I think..
I have an S30 on order, I like the portability and wide field views. I have a 90mm refractor for visual but that is too heavy to travel back and forth through airports so the S30 fits the bill for me.
I have the S50 and love it. I have also pre-ordered the S30….not to replace the S50, but to complement it. If/when ZWO comes out with a larger version of the S50, I imagine I’ll get they as well.
I bought the S50 last week After cancelling my order for the Dwarf 3. Dwarflabs kept putting back the release date on my order. The last email I got from them was now Jan 2025 at the earliest . Im really happy with the S50 and the first images I got out of it were amazing.
Yeah, I was a bit disappointed to hear that deliveries of the D3 had been pushed back to January. Fingers crossed that there aren't any further delays!
You say around 5:40 that Dwarf Labs are working on a successor to the Dwarf 2. But this video was published in November 2024, and the Dwarf 3 was released some time ago, and has been extensively reviewed. I wonder if the S30 offers anything not possible with the S50 and the Dwarf 3?
Great video. Thank you. I think I'm going to go ahead and get the S50. I've only just began Astrophotography with my Google Pixel 7 Pro. And while I'm very impressed with what I can get with it, it falls very (easily predictable) short of what I truly am looking for.
I've had the S50 for 9 months and have had a great time with it. As telescopes go, it is already incredibly portable. Smaller and lighter was not on my improvement list. I've read up on the S30 and watched videos, but other than tracking cars and planes, the S30 doesn't do as well as the S50. For an upgrade, I'd love to see an equatorial option and/or a larger aperture. In the meantime, the Mosaic mode has been a great software upgrade.

I’m really impressed by both the S50 and S30, but like a lot of other armature astronomers I’d really like to see an S80 as I have a Skywatcher 80 ED 600mm f/7.5 telescope and EQ6-R Pro GOTO mount and tripod. Therefore, for now, I’m hanging on to see what they come up with next year.
I definitely want one that's better than the 50, so whatever higher number that ends up being. Bigger aperture that produces better less fuzzy pictures. I would pay $1000-1500 for it!

It looks like you could take either one in carry on and because you are only looking at a 10 min set up vs 2 hours for a full on astro rig, it's totally doable on vacation and you are not going to piss off the wife\GF and because it's so autonomous it can do it's thing while you go out to dinner.
I just ordered the S50, but may take a few weeks before I get it. It is going to seem like forever waiting for it. I will want try it when it gets warmer out again.

Love the videos I find them very detailed and I always learn something from them. I was at the beginning of the year saving up to buy the s50 but I broke the rear window of my car so had to replace that. I then started saving again and of course my car died and had to be scrapped. Everything s50 was put on the back boiler so I could get a new car. I am now saving up for the s30 so I'm just waiting for my new car to explode 😂😂😂. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the s30 fingers crossed 🤞🤞

I heard on Cloudy Nights that some people who initially ordered a S50 cancelled their order as there is a hype of a new and improved Seestar in the workings, having spoken to some Astronomy Shops, this can’t be proven.
I already have an S50, just ordered the S30. I figure I can use one for astrophotography and one for exoplanet transits, no need to choose between the two anymore 😁
The D2 has received the same software upgrades as the D3. You cannot compare with the Seestar range even just for the EQ mode supported on both D2 and D3. I suggest you maybe check the reviews of the D3 that's already been published. The mosaic mode released for the Seestar just made the scope much slower than before. It was an afterthought that wouldn't have been implemented if it weren't for users' noise about it. Without EQ mode the S30 is IMO not worth even its low price.
Would have preferred the s50 resolution with a larger chip to give a wider fields but I guess I’ll be getting an S30 for cheapness, field of view and compactness.

Have been alerted to these smart telescopes, as an astronomy teacher of over 20 years, naked eye viewing astronomy nothing digital or any post-processing, I didn't even know something like this really existed. I am definitely intrigued by them, although I think I definitely would get a sense of FOMO, I would want the larger aperture size but the smaller one has a better CCD sensor it seems(??), then the mosaic function seems a bit of a limit to doubling the FOV(?) it makes me wonder why only double? Do these telescopes not track the sky at all? And if not, then should I want to wait until a feature that actually can track the sky comes out?
Could you make the raw files available? It would be nice to see the original images side by side on my 4K monitor. I wonder in which case the smaller objects look better and I don't want to use my phone to look at pictures taken with Seestar.
well its very cool for the money and all that, but both image colors are a bit off because of the filter. The nebula is not that red. I had similar results when I used a optolong l pro filter and tried to do a photometric color calibration. The star colors aren't correct and the process can't do proper color calibration.
I just got the S50 for this Christmass and I am waiting for good weather. I have also ordered a Dwarf3 for my son and I am waiting its delivery. I think I will stop here.
I have the S30 on pre-order from vega vision and hoping it arrives before Christmas. I really wanted the S50 but it was out of my price range and as it’s my first step in to astronomy to encourage my space mad 7 year old I couldn’t justify the extra cost over the S30. It does look mightily impressive in its own right though. Can you recommend any other hardware/software for an absolute beginner?
Both the S30 and S50 are great for beginners. Super fast setup, easy to use app to control it, and very good quality images for the price. You get a little more detail with the 50, but the wider FOV on the 30 allows imaging larger DSO without having to use mosaic mode. As Damon pointed out, you will be hard pressed to get any surface detail on Jupiter or the Saturn rings on the 30, but you aren't gonna get too much detail on either of those 2 targets with the 50 either. If I was getting into the hobby with no knowledge, I probably would go with the 30 to start off.
Based only on this video, S50 hands down. With the S30 as an entry level smart scope, beginners are going to want to see the planets. Looks like the S30 is a major fail in this regard. ZWO should do an S50 with the 585 sensor for
@xchimnyx you are commenting from a place of knowledge/experience. My comment was about the S30 as an entry level device attractive to beginners, i.e. those that don't know their focal length from their aperture. Someone with no knowledge is going to buy this and the first three things they will want to see is the moon, Saturn, and Jupiter. This device fails at 2 of these 3, and there will be disappointment. Some may push on to view other objects. Others may just give up right there, thinking there is something wrong with it.
@xchimnyx I'll reserve judgment on that point depending on if ZWO puts clear pictures of the planets on the packaging, like the rest of the entry level "Christmas" scopes.
Ok im new to this so sorry for the dumb question. Can i open up my seestar during the day without the solar filter? Is the filter only required if im pointing directly at the sun or always in daylight? Thanks in advance 😊
You know what would push me over the edge, 60 mm, EQ option, 1.25 at the back so I can swap out the camera for the next ZWO improved camera in a few years from now. I would pay $ a grand for that.
I'm guessing it has the same 10/20/30 options that the S50 has, but as in the case with the 50, anything above the 10 second mark will probably have a lot of rejected subs due to star trails unless you mount it based on the eq trick people have come up with to basically give it an EQ mode.
Looking for budget telescope would you rather have celestron star sense LT80 or the 114 one is reflector other refractor just about same specs but which would be better for moon Saturn or Jupiter all I'm really interested in right now
if choosing between 80LT & 114LT is a must. I prefer 80LT to 114LT. As 114LT with a poor bird Jones design ,you can never get a good image from it . Try to avoid all the 114 series from celestron ,they always build it with poor bird jones design and result in abnormal long focal length. If possible, try the upper version ,say 130DX , it is much better.
Have the s50 and d2.took the d2 on holidays.bortle 6 Ibiza and the staff in the hotel couldn't believe how it could take photos as you could only barely make out constellations.
I don't own one yet. I'm waiting for a better ZWO Seastar model like 70, 80 or 100mm with better image sensor, tracking & 256 or 512gb storage or better yet takes a SD card as well for backup storage. Tracking is important to me as I only watch planets, moon, sun & so on.
I really like my dwarf 2 and the seestar s50 the quality of the image of the seestar is better but the dwarf2 could go Eq mode and for me it have least drop off picture at the end lice them both
Hy Damon, Can you make a beginner friendly setup! A idea from me: I am planning to buy Skywatcher star adventure 2i -very cheap for a mount tbh Canon t3i-very used in astrophotography (proof-astrobin) eBay used to make it cheap And then any good refractor or lens For a refractor my eyes are on skywatcher evostar 72ed also not expensive in Amazon Hope this setup suits many beginners with 1k budget!! And if you try this, then I will definitely buy this setup cause I know you will show results with this
I have the same set up when I first started but with the cannon T-7 then bought the 3i later for the flip screen and the Orion field flattener, had some great results with just a tracker
S50 is a bit too large for my taste - I want something I can travel with. The S30 is about the right size but as you showed, wasn't up to seeing anything no Jupiter. The Dwarf 3 is more interesting to me at the moment - slightly larger aperture than S30 and similar size and also equatorial by default.

The Seestar app was just updated to include an intelligent denoise function. I have to admit that it does a very good job.

Try your s50. It's also able to tracking truck or airplane.

I saw a different review of the S30 where they showed how it could track a moving object. Is that also a feature of the S50?

I tried capturing Jupiter tonight with the S50 but I can’t seem to make out the bands and it’s just a bright circle.

I think the S30 has its place…but WOW, is the S50 better. If you have the money, i absolutely would recommend the S50…
Would have preferred the s50 resolution with a larger chip to give a wider fields but I guess I’ll be getting an S30 for cheapness, field of view and compactness.
I'm sorry but I'm still a little confused. A friend of mine wants a telescope mostly for planet viewing. Do either of these scopes fill that need? Thanks.
Have been alerted to these smart telescopes, as an astronomy teacher of over 20 years, naked eye viewing astronomy nothing digital or any post-processing, I didn't even know something like this really existed. I am definitely intrigued by them, although I think I definitely would get a sense of FOMO, I would want the larger aperture size but the smaller one has a better CCD sensor it seems(??), then the mosaic function seems a bit of a limit to doubling the FOV(?) it makes me wonder why only double? Do these telescopes not track the sky at all? And if not, then should I want to wait until a feature that actually can track the sky comes out?
I just got a S50 on sale for $450, waiting for clears skies to use it.

I know each scope has its benefits and downsides, but as someone looking to buy their very first which would you recommend in a vacuum?
well its very cool for the money and all that, but both image colors are a bit off because of the filter. The nebula is not that red. I had similar results when I used a optolong l pro filter and tried to do a photometric color calibration. The star colors aren't correct and the process can't do proper color calibration.

Just ordered the S30 - New to the hobby but struggling to find time to setup Skywatcher and Camera - almost always under rubbish Yorkshire skys
I just got the S50 for this Christmass and I am waiting for good weather. I have also ordered a Dwarf3 for my son and I am waiting its delivery. I think I will stop here.
I have the S30 on pre-order from vega vision and hoping it arrives before Christmas. I really wanted the S50 but it was out of my price range and as it’s my first step in to astronomy to encourage my space mad 7 year old I couldn’t justify the extra cost over the S30. It does look mightily impressive in its own right though.

sure man, because it does all job for you, but as you can see S30 has almost identical results, so maybe you can pay less for cheapre version
Both the S30 and S50 are great for beginners. Super fast setup, easy to use app to control it, and very good quality images for the price. You get a little more detail with the 50, but the wider FOV on the 30 allows imaging larger DSO without having to use mosaic mode. As Damon pointed out, you will be hard pressed to get any surface detail on Jupiter or the Saturn rings on the 30, but you aren't gonna get too much detail on either of those 2 targets with the 50 either. If I was getting into the hobby with no knowledge, I probably would go with the 30 to start off.
Have you done any more deepsky imaging with the HAC125? I received mine a short time ago, but haven't been able to try it out.
Based only on this video, S50 hands down. With the S30 as an entry level smart scope, beginners are going to want to see the planets. Looks like the S30 is a major fail in this regard.
ZWO should do an S50 with the 585 sensor for
Planets need focal length and that comes with a price. If people buy tiny 250mm smart scopes and expect planets they deserve to be upset
@xchimnyx you are commenting from a place of knowledge/experience. My comment was about the S30 as an entry level device attractive to beginners, i.e. those that don't know their focal length from their aperture. Someone with no knowledge is going to buy this and the first three things they will want to see is the moon, Saturn, and Jupiter. This device fails at 2 of these 3, and there will be disappointment. Some may push on to view other objects. Others may just give up right there, thinking there is something wrong with it.
@millenialfalcon8243 not doing research on any product above $100 is foolish and they deserve the disappointment.
@xchimnyx I'll reserve judgment on that point depending on if ZWO puts clear pictures of the planets on the packaging, like the rest of the entry level "Christmas" scopes.

Ok im new to this so sorry for the dumb question. Can i open up my seestar during the day without the solar filter? Is the filter only required if im pointing directly at the sun or always in daylight? Thanks in advance 😊

You know what would push me over the edge, 60 mm, EQ option, 1.25 at the back so I can swap out the camera for the next ZWO improved camera in a few years from now. I would pay $ a grand for that.
Can you take a second or so exposure with these scopes to capture the Trapezium in M42?
I'm guessing it has the same 10/20/30 options that the S50 has, but as in the case with the 50, anything above the 10 second mark will probably have a lot of rejected subs due to star trails unless you mount it based on the eq trick people have come up with to basically give it an EQ mode.
Looking for budget telescope would you rather have celestron star sense LT80 or the 114 one is reflector other refractor just about same specs but which would be better for moon Saturn or Jupiter all I'm really interested in right now
if choosing between 80LT & 114LT is a must. I prefer 80LT to 114LT. As 114LT with a poor bird Jones design ,you can never get a good image from it . Try to avoid all the 114 series from celestron ,they always build it with poor bird jones design and result in abnormal long focal length.
If possible, try the upper version ,say 130DX , it is much better.

Have the s50 and d2.took the d2 on holidays.bortle 6 Ibiza and the staff in the hotel couldn't believe how it could take photos as you could only barely make out constellations.

I don't own one yet. I'm waiting for a better ZWO Seastar model like 70, 80 or 100mm with better image sensor, tracking & 256 or 512gb storage or better yet takes a SD card as well for backup storage. Tracking is important to me as I only watch planets, moon, sun & so on.
I got the S50 scope for $299 from Amazon. Must be clearing them out.

I really like my dwarf 2 and the seestar s50 the quality of the image of the seestar is better but the dwarf2 could go Eq mode and for me it have least drop off picture at the end lice them both

I am planning to buy
Skywatcher star adventure 2i -very cheap for a mount tbh
Canon t3i-very used in astrophotography (proof-astrobin) eBay used to make it cheap
And then any good refractor or lens
For a refractor my eyes are on skywatcher evostar 72ed also not expensive in Amazon
Hope this setup suits many beginners with 1k budget!!
And if you try this, then I will definitely buy this setup cause I know you will show results with this
I have the same set up when I first started but with the cannon T-7 then bought the 3i later for the flip screen and the Orion field flattener, had some great results with just a tracker

S50 is a bit too large for my taste - I want something I can travel with. The S30 is about the right size but as you showed, wasn't up to seeing anything no Jupiter. The Dwarf 3 is more interesting to me at the moment - slightly larger aperture than S30 and similar size and also equatorial by default.
My S30 was only 329$ with coupon.
