This was a great interview, learning how horology is actually used in Naval aviation and why complications exist or may not be needed today. I think that Chris noting simplicity, legabilty, size and Lume as key parameters for his needs helps me confirm some of choices I make for myself. I would never have guessed that a WWII Flieger would be a desirable form to a modern aviator but, it makes sense now. I would vote for some more of this type of information almong the latest watch fad reviews. Also, good job letting him talk.......great video! Thanks to Chris for his service and contribution to this.

Hey, really glad you liked it. I find this stuff fascinating and usually the guests know a lot more than me about their subject so its not my time to talk over them. I would honestly do a lot more of this, I just really need the guests who are willing to come on like Chris did. I hear a lot of great watch stories but its a leap for people to want to tell them on camera and I totally understand that, for the first year of my channel I hardly ever appeared on camera.

I remember reading a news article about the movie Top Gun circa 1986 describing how Tom Cruise almost drowned with likely loss of his body at sea while filming the post ejection water rescue scenes. Cruise's parachute was filling with water and sinking with one of the parachute lines entangled around his arm and the "big aviator watch" he was wearing. Nearby divers saved him by cutting the chute away.
Pilot themed watches are more likely to be purchased by air travelers and/or people who simply like the look of those watches. The aviation themed watches that feature slide rule bezels are actually pretty handy for non-aviation day to day math situations. However, when asked, most people don’t know what that bezel is for let alone how to use it! Something along the lines of a Garmin D2 is more likely to be used by a pilot.

And how sweet are those Waltham 8 day clocks?! I wonder how they protect them from magnetic fields in the cockpit. And how would vibration and G's effect the accuracy of the movement?

Hey, thanks for watching and commenting. I just searched on that, looks like an article from Wound and Worn in 2017? looks like they planned on issuing the Garmins for the altimeter function. @@CasualWatchReviews Sam that news sounds accurate: I'm on a training base now and away from the operational fleet but I've seen more and more watches like that. It would certainly be useful to know the effective cabin altitude (not the aircraft's actual altitude but the air pressure inside the cockpit) as a backup to help monitor the environment for the crew. I started flight school in 1997 and did my first deployment in 2000, so I'm definitely not on the 'leading edge' anymore!
