Comment on the story/pacing complaint. I understand about the amount of dialogue is daunting, but people who buy this know the characters and enjoy them enough to buy the game/play the story to enjoy more of the characters. I can understand someone who doesnt know these characters getting nothing from it, but from a fan of the entire series, it is a real treat to see more of these wonderful characters.
Except they refuse to port the main games to the Switch -_-
Why do they expect the Switch audience to care about these characters.
@@JvG0 you missed the point persona 3 and 4 was Sony exclusive and now this game is on all systems. The Switch audience had like 15 (5 if you count the years switch was released)years to play this game you can emulate persona 3 on psp on your phone. In other words " I missed the Part where thats my problem "
@@evilblksamura1 I sure didn't miss the point, but I still think a good portion of the Switch population hasn't played the main games (I don't have the data, but I don't think you do either).
What I'm saying is that it's tough to sell a story heavy spin-off when the main series isn't even available on that device (nor on xbox).
Cool it isn't a problem for you though. Enjoy.
@@JvG0 The switch audience should then go play games. most phones runs psp emulator without a problem and p4g is finally on steam after like 7 years being trapped on on the vita. Not only that this is a sequel of a spin off. I guess what I'm saying that there's next to no excuse to not know or have played or experienced the story of persona through the anime, manga, or movies. A switch port *could* help but the people who really want the story will find a way.
@@JvG0 then the part u missed is that why a Switch user who has no prior history of Persona would play this game. Its obvious that this game is catered to a Persona fan or a fighting game fan. One would already know the story of main games while the other does not give a fck abt the story. Im pretty sure the OTHER Switch players u are trying to include are happy with their Mario, Zelda and Pokemon than to touch this game
I could be very wrong, but I feel like the "no rollback for the switch version" thing is an ArcSys thing specifically. I say that because this same scenario has happened before with Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R, but on top of that the Switch versions of Power Rangers BFTG and Fighting EX Layer utilitise rollback netcode and it's pretty damn good
I can definitely understand why some people would be turned off by the story but if you played and loved the original games it won't matter because you'll just be happy to see boved characters. And if the story doesn't suit then the other modes will scratch the fighting itch. If you want to go through the story anyway then take it in chunks
Agreed. In-fact I love it so much, they'd better add FEMC, Theo and the Phantom Thieves as DLC. I mean they might as well given the Shadow Organisation must've been on vacation for all those psychotic breakdowns.
I think the story complaint is invalid. If you're even thinking about touching this then odds are you know what the Persona franchise is all about, picking up a game with that name in it's title is always going to be character driven. It's like complaining about Breath of the Wild because there's too much exploration.
Boved
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective I doubt they'd add anymore dlc to the remaster outside of the original dlc characters, though I wouldn't be opposed if they randomly did.
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective Better, they MIGHT be working on a "Persona 5 Arena" (could be why Atlus released this in fact) considering a few years ago Atlus trademarked P5S (which obviously was "Persona 5 Strikers/Scramble") but they ALSO trademarked P5A (which IMMEDIATELY made me think "Persona 5 Arena") so who knows, it could only be a matter of time before The Phantoms get their OWN awesome over-the-top fighting game with a brand-new story (GOSH I hope it's true)!
First thing I'm going to note is the complaint about the pacing of the story, welcome to the Persona series, a tremendously character driven series of which every entry is about 70% story to 30% gameplay. If that doesn't sound like you're thing then it's kind of odd you'd pick a sequel in such a heavily story driven series to start with. That said, is the game accessible to newcomers? I think it can be because Ultimax's own story is by no means complicated and the game play is really easy to dive into however be prepared to have Persona 3 and 4 spoiled if you think about picking this up as it does act as a sequel to both Golden and FES and it's set a little before the events of Persona 5.
Thanks this is what I was wondering 👍
Are the Persona Dancing games also 70% story?
The music you used brought back so many sad memories with Persona 3's ending. 😭
There's a theme called... Pull the Trigger from Persona Q2... that might cheer you up (and yes, the irony of the name of that song isn't lost on me).
Enjoyed the story especially as someone that played P3/P4 prior so we get so see these characters again in a unique first person perspective instead of the usual protagonist perspective.
I don’t play Switch fighters online to begin with. It’s really only Smash Ultimate that has an active healthy online. Rollback unfortunately doesn’t fix this even if it was on Switch. New Melty Blood has rollback on Switch, but Switch online for that game is mostly a ghost town anyway. Cross play would have mattered more for niche anime fighters like this then Rollback
I really want a persona 5 arena for ps5 and switch!
I wasnt really planning to play online bc I’m no good at these sorts of games but it still sucks for those who wanted to on switch that there’s no rollback
Played the first 3 hours on ranked on Ps4 and it ran decent within my region but I can see why there were so many who wanted roll back
I love when you guys cover Atlus games
I concur! Atlus games are amazing!🧚♀️🎃⛄️
This game was actually developed by Arc System Works, in collaboration with Atlus
Weeb
Damn, starting off the video with the "Memories of you" OST took me by surprise, wasn't mentally prepared lol
So if they port this game, how come we never got Granblue Fantasy versus? Also would you want p3 p4 and p5 on switch but cloud form?
The net code update not being included does suck but I’ll probably still pick this up just to have it on switch… I don’t really play online anyways
I don't really care about the story mode nor the fact that this version (of course, with all Switch versions of fighting games) lacks rollback. I don't play fighting games online that much, but I will play with friends on occasion. Looking forward to getting this when I get back into gaming!
Thanks for the review. Just bought this yesterday on my PS5. Look forward to playing it later.
If this is your first Atlus game trust me and just wait, I swear these games go on sale every other Tuesday.
I can see that🤣
If this is your first Atlus game, a sequel to two different games is probably not the best entry into the series
@@xxcalibur I mean unless it is and it has flashbacks of what happens in the last game or is a spinoff most games do
@@meric12131415 i mean right off the bat theres major spoilers for both
@@lemon66111 yeah I could probably see that
100% would have preferred Golden on Switch, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this when it goes on sale many months from now.
Already played golden on pc because I can't wait anymore, and that was last year.
I have yet to get this game. FYI Arc System is known to have their fighting game’s main story mode as a novel. It isn’t a 3D fighter to have cutscenes, unless it is your ordinary arcade that shorten character interactions.
Can’t wait! I’ll get it on switch when it gets a physical release
Smart man
You'll be waiting a long time. It's not getting one. At least, not officially. LRG might do it someday, but they'd have to get permission.
It’s not getting a physical release, only in japan. If you want to import that is.
Same I always prefer physical , but if it gets a seal before that I might get it
It's not getting rollback on switch if you're into playing online
Ive been playing sf6 & mk1, but I just bought this because of this video! Thanks. This kind of reminds me of under night in birth
Ok, so to the bit about the Story Mode... THAT'S LITERALLY HOW THE MAJORITY OF FIGHTING GAME STORY MODES GO, I've seen the same thing with both BlazBlue and UnderNight Inbirth. It's kinda a "what did you expect?" Kinda of feeling at this point.
Well, maybe more the anime-style ones. Not so much KOF and SF, at least from what I've seen
@@FG_Enthusiast SF has a preeeetttty shit story all things considered, though KOFs is nice.
@@notimeforcreativenamesjust3034 I just meant the story modes weren't five hour visual novels, I wasn't talking about content at all
The original version of this game came out like 10 years ago so it's to be expected for the story mode feel dated.
@@insanekyo This too. ^
I have persona 3 and 4 and 5. I remember having this on Xbox 360 but sold it. So I might play this game again on switch this time.
Does it have p4 areas story as well? Ultimax is the sequel so I’m just curious
@drmanhattan5970 thanks
do the ports have all the dlc?
i know its got the characters but i got this on ps3 and im curious if the port will have all the dlc background music
yes except for like 10 dlc songs belonging to the persona 3 movies and persona 4 the golden animation due to licensing
Has almost all the dlc [which there was a ton of]. Only ones missed are anime adaption music
Wish they’d put Persona 5 Royale edition on the Switch
Yeah. I'd love p5r and p4g on switch, especially p4g cause I haven't played persona 4 yet
Is there a physical I'm searching
is this re-release Digital only?
If you can, get it on PC or ps4, Switch is probably the worst place to get this game if you want to play online, it's getting roll back netcode in the summer on pc and ps4 but no mention of it on switch. (rollback netcode helps to make sure there's as little input delay as possible online, rather than noticeable delay between your input and when it actually happens, which is especially noticeable on switch while playing online, for example, look at how smash brothers is) edit: glad to see they mentioned it too, to add to it, the switch player base will probably be the lowest one too, so you'll have a harder time finding a match online unless you join a discord
Is this digital only for the switch?
I’m friggin addicted to this great game!!! Among the best fighters next to Melty Blood, Under Night In-Birth, and the Blazblues and Guilty Gears!! 🤘🤘🤘
Nice review. I am glad you are objective on this video
Any Switch owners in the comments who got this? Because I need your opinions on the game too. I wanna get it, but the idea of no rollback is not a pleasant one. . . Is the online for it that bad? Like Smash Ultimate bad? Or is it bearable?
I'd assume it's bearable, arc system games have decent delay based online, but I'm speaking from dbfz and what I've watched of ggxxac+r and this
While I'm glad to see P4AU get some more love, I have to ask: Why? The game was originally released over 8 years ago, and neither Persona 3 nor Persona 4 ever released on any Nintendo system.
It's an ArcSys game, those always aim for multiplatform releases. BBTAG was also on Switch and P4U's cast is part of the crossover (tho it's not worth getting on it anymore because no rollback).
@@Skallva Ym hello? Not everyone plays online 💀💀 stop acting like a core feature everyone uses isn’t gonna be there
@@Skallva While ASW may like multi-play releases, I say again: _Eight. Years._
@@ChaoticHoly It's worth noting P4AU sold really badly during its initial release due to being put on 7th gen consoles a year after the PS4 and Xbox One were already out. This is basically its second chance at life
P4AU also released on Xbox 360 so it's also not new at all for side games to be multiplatform, especially since they're not worked on primarily by the P-Studio crew
This is mostly done to keep the lifespan of a fighting game on current generation systems. People will play a fighting game they love for years, and this game was featured at EVO back when it came out.
As for why on the Switch? I think because of sales of the switch? Honestly… fighting games aren’t known for being the best on Switch, the PS4/Steam versions make way more sense in my opinion, but… it is what it is 🤷🏻
I loved this game, although I think I’m going to be a little too busy this year to pick it up again…If you haven’t played it yet, though, absolutely grab it! The gameplay is deep, sure, but it’s honestly surprisingly easy to get into.
@@MarluxiaX2 The ideal net code for fighting games. In other words, it will have the best possible online conditions.
It's worth noting that rollback won't be implemented on the switch version
@@pearce9063 Lol really? Ah boy. Thanks, I’ll edit it.
Not really into fighting against other players online and have seen P4 but not P3 so maybe I'll pick this one up?
arena ultimax spoils every major twist from p3
So what system is getting rollback? Is it PS4, Xbox, Steam?
It's not on Xbox bit on PS4 and pc it js
@@ggqq6012 And that's happening in the summer. Fair enough, I may pick it up then.
I just can't wait for persona 4 arena ultimax, right?
Loved on ps3, time to get my first fighting game on my switch
come on, you didn't need to start the video with the one song that makes me cry every time
Waiting for rollback on PS4/5 but I'll play this at some point. ... maybe I should play thru Persona 4 first
Do it.
Do it, it's a masterpiece
Play 3 and 4, the story mode spoils every twist including who is the murderer of persona 4 and persona 3 has an amazing end so I'd advise playing both before playing the game
Play it. One of the characters moveset is a huge spoiler for Persona 4
I'd recommend it, from what I've heard, the story spoils 3 and 4. I'm playing through 3 and watching the anime for 4 rn, and am gonna wait to play the story until I'm through
I just wish this game got a physical release in the west on switch and ps4 :/
Good thing about the switch is that physical games are not region locked and have multiple languages in the cartridges. I'd assume the same is true here.
@@nhlvan i believe physical in this case is japanese only sadly.
Agreed
Biggest problem I have with this on Switch is the download size. Over 14GB is a lot to ask, to be honest. I'd have to delete a lot of stuff to make room for it. If the story is as weak as people claim, I'm not sure it's worth it.
14 GB isn’t a lot for a Switch game unless you really have a small SD card
I mean it's a fighting game, most fighting game stories are mid so don't expect rpg levels of plot.
People that are hyped for this are in it for online or local play, not really the story.
P4 dancing def had a better story. I recall Ultimax's story being mid, but the gameplay is fun af
Years later, not surprised or disappointed
Labrys backstory is one of my favorite stories in the whole franchise
I think I'll get the switch version. I dont play online much, and I dont care about the slow story, I just wanna know how my p3 and p4 buddies are doing... especially p3 cause they've gone much worse than p4 or p5 😂. The long story make it perfect if I could play it portable, in bed
I guess I'll just listen to the cutscenes like I would a podcast, over games I don't particularly need to listen to.
It is so stupid that they are not gonna release this physically and no roll back net code? Melty Blood: Type Lumina has roll back net code for Switch so there is not technical difficulty. The only problem here is putting any effort. I wont be getting this unless there is a physical release or until there is a sale digitally.
I’ve been interested in persona but could never get into the JRPG games i just couldn’t get into it but i thought persona was a cool franchise and joker looks badass I’m glad there is a fighting game about persona because fighting games are my thing definitely gonna pick this up for the switch
I'm warning you right now if yo ass don't like reading dialogue and I mean a shitload of dialogue and watching cutscenes for over a hour then don't buy it these games are fun but you gonna spending a lot more time reading dialogue then fighting half of the.time.
Since I only have a switch this game appeals to me because its a Persona player vs player game. I was considering purchasing an imported cartridge to it but wondered if the game would be in english if I did.
The Japan exclusive physical copy does not have English support
That is too bad then. How did you find out?
@@davidpatrick4467 The PlayAsia website doesn’t say that it has English support, and it would if it had the support
The P4A story (that should have been named "PROLOGUE" or something like that) drags A LOT!! As a long time Persona fan, I have to admit that. Wish it were better structured. BUT P4 and P3 episodes (that should have been named "INVESTIGATION TEAM CAMPAIGN" and "SHADOW OPERATIVES CAMPAIGN" or similar) are PERFECTLY paced, are superbly entertaining, and don't overstay their welcome! Anyway, the game is what it is and worth every penny.
Why you gotta start off the video with probably the saddest Persona song? Got me crying in the fight club
As someone who played FES and understands why someone might think the song is sad, I fail to see how the song ITSELF is sad, only the context. The song is great.
i heard that and nearly teared up
@@skolvuk have you read the lyrics?
@@skolvuk Everything about P3 is depressing in a good way! (Looks at the Sun arcana & every tragic death)
@@jimmystar8972 true
Another comment on the story/pacing complaint. it's a 2d fighting game the entire purpose of the genre is the multiplayer. the story literally does not matter. even to casual players. while their are some fighting games with good stories they usually aren't a part of a pre-existing series like this game is. the ones that are usually have small stories that aren't the best. example being dragon ball fighterz
I'm very confused by your choice to start the Persona fighting game review by playing Memories Of You.
Pursuing my true
Seeeeelf!!!
I loved P4G so this is an insta-buy for me. ALthough I'm still on the fence about PC vs Switch. I'll read a few comparison reviews before committing,
Edit: I just learned that if you have Persona 4 Golden on Steam, you can get a 30% discount on Ultimax. That makes the decision easy. (At least in the US store.)
PC is getting rollback netcode in the summer but switch wont be, if you're Into online, also pc has way less input delay in general compared to switch if you care about that
I'd say get either one you'll be happy either way 😁
I'd say pc so you can have actually good netcode when it gets updated in summer
And if you don't care about netcode then it's still a great game u have a lot offline stuff to do netcode is not everything unless your a big fighter fan which I'm not so yh ☺️🤔
I recommend you to play Persona 3 before jumping into the story mode. Because the story mode contains spoilers from Persona 3.
Sometimes when you're talking and I can't see your face, it sounds like I'm listening to Otacon. Sorry if that's weird to say, you just sometimes sound similar XD
I love how every video opens with
Someone wrote this, and I'm reading it out loud.
Game deserves an 8 not a 7 but then again that depends on what you're looking for in the game. For me it's a beautiful stylish, artistic sprite animated, technical Arcsystemworks fighting game using the persona 3 n 4 characters. For others it might just be another fighting game with anime aesthetics.
And by a big spoiler for P4 story, if you didn't played or are familiar with the story of P4.
The story mode from the og persona 4 arena was much better than the ultimax story mode. At least in the PS3 games. Sounds like that’s included here as well. If you haven’t tried that, I’d give it a shot.
They were about the same. First game story was half introductions to what these characters been up to since we last saw them and the rest was a tournament with an underwhelming final boss.
This time most of the introductions are out of the way except for the Ultimax new characters and involves a Tartarus like setting with imo a much better final boss.
"This port also includes the 2.0 version, which brings various balance changes for a overall better fighting game experience"
Shadow Version of Characters: May we introduce ourselves?
i pretty much entirely agree with this review, however i have this one comment to make:
"the story is an aboslute bore"
clearly someone didn't play Labyrs' story
This gameplay is very well made and polished definitely 10/10
If your complaining about a story mode in a fighting game, might I suggest, oh I don't know... Not playing said story mode? If I recall right, there's an option to just skip all the text with the push of a button but by that point, why are you even bothering with Story Mode? There are other more direct routes to fights.
...My man, you do realise which franchise we're talking about here right?... I agree that it's a mute point since he didn't address the quality of the story but... seriously if you pick up any game with Persona in the title you know full well what you're getting into.
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective I've also never played any Persona game besides the Arena games myself, so No, I don't
@@AWMonopolyMan Fair enough. I do recommend it though, Persona 3 in particular really does go above and beyond with it's story. Great characters, good gameplay and strong elements.
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective Vita stopped accepting debit as far as I know and I don't have a PS2 nor PS3, so no legal way to play.
@@AWMonopolyMan Would it not be easy to buy PSN credit and transfer it to your account? That said the digital version of P3 Portable is 25 quid and I think P4G is like 15.

P4G was my favorite so this kinda cool
Unless you're planning on playing online, switch version is still good.
Otherwise PS4 and PC are better tbh.
Thats why I want it
I well shure have fun whit this game
If you think this is bad the Guilt Gear game Xrd on just have story in story mode no gameplay.

Oh and a ps5 so i can play elden ring....
Complaining about excessive dialogue in a Persona game seems weird. Um, are you at all familiar with the series?
I can say the reviewer never player persona 3 portable, the first hour or two in that game is static screens with dialogue
From someone who just started p3p, yep, i like the characters so far tho, and the combat is still fun, just wish that walls wouldn't hide shadows in dungeons sometimes
Probably gonna get this but annoyed at how bigger memory it is
It’s a pretty big game for fighting game standards. The single player alone is probably meatier then anything that isn’t NR fighters
why don't we have persona on switch the 3ds eshop is about to shut down i just don't get it?
The only Persona games on the 3DS was Q and Q2 both are really good to be fair. But Nintendo have never had a mainline Persona game besides the sequel games of Strikers and now Ultimax. Persona 1-5 all currently remain absent.
Persona shouldn't be on switch, the portbeggers don't deserve it, Now ports of more SMT games like nocturne was for like the other PS2 games that yknow.. aren't on modern consoles like persona is should be.
Cool fighting game, oh a sequel....
So where is persona 3 and 4 original games?

this rollback thing is pathetic
melty blood(a game that must have a more limited budget than this atlus re-release) also uses rollback and it is functional, and Capcom Fighting Collection will also have rollback on the switch, there is no excuse not to put it
if it was really something technical on the switch I would understand, but I will not buy a game that is inferior to other versions for absolutely no reason
Great game !
I love all these Games but if I'm honest the sweaty elitist God tier player base puts me off. I would say I got quite good at these games but my say 100 hours experience doesn't really ever compare to all theses players with thousands apon thousands of hours.
So it's safe to say it's either has alot of talking as always or it's secretly a VN
Yeah if you played the original P4 there was a TON of dialogue before even the first actual dungeon. The pacing if anything matches original game
There's a lot of cutscenes but not all of them are voiced. The best way I can describe the game is, have you ever played Dynasty Warriors 5? You know how each campaign was character based from their perspective rather than story based... it's that.
