A couple disclaimers:
1. Although I was only there for 1 month, I say, "lived in Mexico" because I had the option to (and originally planned) to be there for 7 months or more. I think the experience that I had pretty much represented what it would have been like for me no matter how long I would've stayed for.
2. I don’t want to make it all about me; my two friends and I all had very interesting & attention-filled experiences there, but I can only speak for myself (a black girl) and the interactions I had personally. It’s not to say that if you are some other race that you won’t experience something very similar (& I’m pretty sure my Asian American friend did).
3. Some of this may seem extreme or exaggerated but I cannot make any of this up lol! I even have footage of some of the many interactions I had. Bottom line is: if you go and you’re black, especially if you don't appear to be some random beach-goer, you WILL draw some type of attention, & people will want to interact with you very often.
4. I stayed in a touristy area (Puerto Vallarta), so I HIGHLY doubt I was the first Black person anyone had ever seen. But I was living there as if I was… living there… not like a tourist. So I wasn’t trapped on a resort, I was commuting like, grocery shopping like, and interacting with everyday Mexican people. Like 98% of the interactions I had (outside of my class/roommates) were with Mexican people/non-tourists.
Things people asked/ talked about:
my ethnicity/background
my looks
what I was doing in Mexico
my hair
how I know Spanish

I really never expected this video to become so popular and for so many people to see it. It was one of my first videos and I only had like 60 subscribers when I first posted it lol. So if you're wondering why I approached the video with this certain narrative, or stressed certain things, it was because this video was meant for a very specific (and smaller) audience and at the time I was really only expecting close family and friends to see it. But even a year later so many people are still watching it and everyone is so nice in the comments 💕 I really do appreciate it all, and everyone who has subscribed! :) I think you all are so sweet, men and women. This is why I love Mexico in the first place hahah ❤️
Number one you are really beautiful, your smile is beautiful and those eyes!.. yeah .. I’m Mexican and been leaving in the states for a while and I noticed that most of the Hispanic people the comes to the US tends to identify more with black people , most white people is nice don’t get me wrong but they missing a bit of flavor.. and you know us Mexicans, we like party, music, and flavor and dam you black girls have a lot of that, and much more 😉😍

Yeah, don't be offended, i live in Mexico. People call me "negro" or "Moreno", but we don't use the word negro as an insult.
Alejandro Castellon yeah it’s just that the white people used that word to demean black people but I guess they couldn’t even say the word right, they said “negroe” but I would consider it racist if you say it in Spanish and the context matters.
Even if you are light brown skin in Mexico they call u negro. My family call me negro too.
Yup in latin american in general if you are dark skinned like myself get called negro or moreno but its not ment to offend.
Alejandro Castellon it’s not an insult it just means dark skinned boy if you say negro or if for a girl negra it’s just a nickname for a darkskin

I lived in Chiapas México off and on for over 9 years.
The first year was the hardest because people stared constantly. I always became defensive, but finally realized they were starting at me because many had never seen a black American.
I now live 3 hours from Mexican border in San Antonio. I constantly miss Mexico, the friends I made, the food, and the diverse beauty.
There is no country like Mexico to me, I love love love Mexico
This is EXACTLY how I feel. I miss it so much; you'd've thought I was born and raised there or something lol. But I cannot wait to go to Chiapas. That must have been amazing for you!
AyeGetItBroady I can't even start talking about it because I might cry lol. 9 years of my life at the bottom of Mexico, the true Jewel of the nation
I empathize with this so much haha
Kevin Thomas .. hey! That's an insult! Where do you leave the rest of us!?, you have to go and visit other states, long visits.. then we'll talk..
I apologize for butting in, I couldn't help it.. there's not one jewel but a treasure full, that's what Mexico is.
Blanca Tobon oh stop it! I take it an insult that you’d take my PERSONAL OPINION as an insult lol.
I lived in Mexico almost 10 years and visited almost all the states of the Republic at least once. I also lived in Chetumal, Zacatecas, Saltillo, Chihuahua, and Texacoco. Spent ridiculous amounts of time in Veracruz, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas, and of course Nuevo León.
If I say in my opinion Chiapas is the hidden jewel of the nation I have a damn right to say so.
People visit the USA and declare NY or San Francisco as cultural jewels of our nation, we know there are many other cities that can hold those distinctions, but we don’t take it as an insult, just stop the silly lol lol
Plus, I said I love love Mexico. ALL OF MEXICO

I’ve seen many videos of black’s experiences in Mexico, and let me offer a word of advice to you guys.
DO NOT bring your American experiences with you, and think that we are going to treat you the same way. Put your guard down. Be who you want to be, lower your weapons.
We will definitely stare at you. We will definitely make comments. We may even point. But do NOT misunderstand this with your experiences that you’ve had growing up in America.
We have never seen someone like you, and all this staring/commenting is because of curiosity. You are new to us. In Mexico we have just about every race imaginable, except for black. There are black Mexicans, but most Mexicans have never met them.
We are not being racist. If anything, we DO think you’re beautiful. We admire your skin tone. (It’s gorgeous!), those smiles (they make our hearts flutter!). We are admiring a beauty that Mexicans rarely get to see.
So anyways, American blacks. Sorry that America has hardened you and you’ve developed a defense mechanism against the incredible racism you experience, but you won’t experience this in Mexico. We love you guys! We respect you! You are our equals.
Their Gringo experiences..... White and black people are not American. There is now name for USA nationals....they don't have a name. The Americans are the brown people for Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, etc....the Hopi, Cherokee, etc.
Thanks for your honesty !😊

As a Mexican, getting called "Morena", "Chocolate", "Negrito" is not done meaning to be racist, most dark skinned persons are sometimes called like that but most of the times its said in a friendly way, we use it for our friends, If you hear this words do not think that they are being mean to you, not only in Mexico, this applies to all of Latin American countries. We love visitors and we always get exited when we meet someone from another country, that is why a lot of people look at you.

As a dark skin black girl, this makes me really happy that you had a positive experience in Mexico. In the U.S you're kind of conditioned to think ppl don't like you because of your skin color. This gives me a warm feeling.
These comments make me so happy! This is all I ever wanted in the first place 😊 Never expected this many other people to see it haha
Hola! thank you for sharing your experience with us. As a Mexican American I really appreciate the feedback. I apologize for your experience in the USA. to have been conditioned to think that being black is something to be offended by. I almost cried with your video because you reminded me what Mexico is about. Regardless of any political issues going on in Mexico we all are just good people wishing each other well. As a Mexican American moving to the US I feel like just by being present it’s offending somebody enough, no wonder I live with this anxiety. My experience in the US is a little bit different, i once to stood next to a black girl in a line and smiled at her and all I got was a nasty look. I was worried she thought I didint meant well. it scared me. Truly. Don’t know why my comment turned so blue haha, but kudos to you and share more about your fun experiences in Mexico !🇲🇽 ❤️

“Morena/negra” is such a non offensive word in Mexico that even one of our most influential political parties in the country is named Morena lol

Mexico took in a lot of run away slaves to protect them. Many Mexicans are afro Mexican or afro decent.
Say that
In Latin America to be black is not to be something of the other world, because when the Europeans arrived in Latin America there were natives of tan color. In the United States the natives were racially finished while the Afro used as slaves in Latin America were given more freedom, as well as the natives but were also victims of slavery.

When you told the story about the young girls at the festival I literally cried😭 because in the states people will call me pretty but there have been times when ppl would say “it would be better if you were lighter” and to hear a story where someone actually wanted to be a darker skin color is just so amazing to me
Girl! I remember my junior year of high school I was in the hall and my sister who is two years younger happened to be out there too. This girl in my grade saw us and walked over and so I introduced her to my sister. But when she saw her she said, "Oh... but she's lightskin. Kayla you're dark lol. Too dark 😂" and my sister and I just kinda sat there like 😐I swear these things really used to happen and people seem to think I made these dark-skin-girl experiences up!! Smh I just stopped responding to those comments. If you know, (and WE do!) you know! But anyways, sorry for rambling, but thanks for watching! 💕haha
I'm an Afromexican, there's always African-American's that want me to prove it and they always make me feel like I shouldn't share my heritage. Anyway, I was darker as a child and now every time I tan I'm mega happy because I see dark as beautiful. Honestly I think the lighter people look the more frail they seem (sickly/ jaundice). I believe that's part of evolution to perceive dark skin as strong and healthy, but somehow the U.S. conditions you to think dark is socially negative. Wish I could be darker. ❤😊
Nooo never listen to anyone who says such ignorant words! you have a spectacular color! The darker the more beautiful! Dark skin a gift from god, you are beautiful! Sexy! Powerful! Built toned and firm! Like the avatars! You will age gracefully! You have voluminous hair like all the time, as if you just got off the VS runway! Omg if I was dark. I would want to have the color of the darkest ebony, and hypnotize every eye with my surreal and magical appearance, as if I was hand carved by god himself. But wait! You are 😌✨ you my beautiful woman, are hand carved by god himself. 🔥✨🤎✨🔥

A bit of black History in Mexico here!!! I am a mexican history teacher, during colonial times the spanish brought More that 500 thousand African slaves to Mexico, then why most of mexicans don't know and afromexican? Well most of them were integrated and mixed with mestizos (mixed mexicans) and native mexicans, the black were never take apart, they were accepted as mexicans, as equals, even the second president of Mexico Vicente Guerrero was an afromexican and nobody cares that because the origin in Mexico never has been important, today there are a very small black comunities that are not much mixed but the reason was only that were very very far and inaccessible at the time, but not now.
It's more or less the same in all Latin America, especially in the Spanish Caribbean !!!!! Well, starts with the Spaniards who really didn't mind at the Conquista mixing with native races. OK, most of those were not proper marriages but they did it anyway. I know now you have a tiny community of Haitians close to the U.S. border: good for you, I read these Haitians are hard workers and some of them even have a degree (teachers, technicians), they are very happy with the opportunity of working in Mexico, sending money to their families in Haiti and grateful for the interactions with Mexicans there as they are not discriminated: people even started buying typical cuisine dishes at their tiny sales booths.
Thank you. This was very informative.
Also, the first mexican president, Guadalupe Victoria, was an afromexican man
Saludos.
I'm a 66 year old black woman with a curly afro and skin about your skin's color, and this year, I've spent 2 weeks in Merida. A man came up to me in the drug store and politely kissed my hand and said how delighted he was to see a lovely black woman in Merida. Other Mexicans complimented me on my hair. Most of the time I was with my partner, who's a white guy with silver hair. No one stared at us. Unlike in the South where we live in the US, before entering an eatery or bar, we didn't have to worry about whether it would be safe. I didn't have to fear the police. We are thinking of retiring to Mexico, and I think that living there would be far less stressful for me than living in the U.S.
Exactly! I love it when people experience exactly what I did and know what I'm talking about. It is so crazy to me that we could be treated soo much nicer in a country that isn't even home to us. I've got my mind set on retired in Mexico too.

Come on over to Mexico linda! You will always be treated better in Mexico because Mexico has something that America will NEVER have. Empathy and humanity. We see you and see the commonality in our spirits, instead of the difference of our skin.

“negrita”, “morena”, “prietita”, is not necessary offensive; your skin could be blue, green or futzia, we won’t care down in Mexico, we’ll still say “buenos días “ to you and tell you you are pretty. There are native Afromexicans in the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Veracruz. Yes, there are racists in México too, but they are the less.
the second president was black and they named the state Of Guerrero after him
I am what you could call a white passer, and I get called "mi negra". These terms are for endearment, of course sometimes they are used in order to offend, but that's not common.

In Mexico “morena, morenita, negrita” it’s what they call you if they think you are pretty, attractive woman, it’s a compliment for having a beautiful skin
No mames jaja
Yeah, but it is weird since sometimes there's a big difference between the word "negro" and "negrito", the first connoting negativity and the latter being more friendly. And saying "negro" or "negra" sometimes is even more racist. In Argentina many people consider calling someone "negro" an insult similar to calling them "naco" or "indio".
Latinos are racist, let's not sugarcoat it, it just happens that this black lady is gorgeous af so that kind of influenced the positivie perception towards her.
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros4419 Latinos can be racist not "are", but I do agree there is a different connotation with the words morenita or mi negra (which is what my dad calls me to this day) than with the word negro or negra. It all differs on how its being said, plus latinos can be quite colorist even when it comes to their own nationality or shamed of their native roots. Its cause Mexico didnt hide all the history from the people and they know exactly who you are just by looking at their ancient temple walls. Theres an Ankh cross in Toluco Mexico they still havent explained that americans k ow nothing about. Even with the pryamids, they play ignorant.
They know who we are. We don't. Through systematic socio engineering...we lost adoration and admiration for the dark moorish asiatic woman. That still doesn't mean She isnt godd.
It should be a crime for mexicans and chinese and puerto ricans to hate on Melanated people considering they come from that blood.
America was Mexico in 1898. Thats not that long ago people. All they did was draw a line in the sand and divided you so u dont see your native blood in Mexicans.
Mexico remembers the Moors. Not just the Alamo.
Some Mexicans are shy, not all of them are super smiley, extroverted and talkative; when they see someone so attractive they might get too impressed, shocked.
Hu, that's true. I never even really think about that. I just know so many to be outgoing and super friendly. Being shy just doesn't cross my mind
@ Lucia Ortega... False.... I'm not shy ... I'm Extroverted!
Tibia Action HD she said some...so you are one of the ones that are not shy. Anyways I found that most woman when they see a beautiful woman they often feel intimidated and won’t talk but don’t mean to be rude.
GIRL, I LOVED THIS VIDEO! You are extremely beautiful. I'm so happy to hear of your welcoming experience in Mexico and I love your hilarious personality!
Ahh thank you so much haha! 💕 Getting compliments, especially about my personality, from other women just warms my heart so much!! 😊
I’m native Mexican. Because my skin is brown my uncle call me morena. For us, well my grandmother told me long time ago first person was born in Africa and spread all over the world. Our home and ancestors were born there... I love the story so much my uncle end up calling me africa.. I have boyfriend from Africa.. anyway In Mexico we give nick names all time. Morenita, negrita, chocolatillo, gordito, gordita, papi, mamita, etc is all with Love.
What? 😂
Some “quick” facts about Mexicans: I’m Mexican, living in the central area of the country, I can confirm that racism is a thing only between ourselves, between what we call whitexicans and the brown skinned Mexicans (like me), it’s a specific economic-social thing and I don’t like it, but it’s what its going on in here.
There’s is no bad racism to other people in Mexico, what I mean: We absolutely love different types of people that visit our country, we will often try to show off and talk to the visitors about our own country, city, gastronomy and culture enthusiastically and in a really friendly way, so don’t be afraid or be weirded out when we eagerly insist in showing you our “stuff“, that’s our way of being.
Other thing with the words you could hear form us is that we use them in completely friendly way and never in bad way, because we also tend to point a lot visual characteristics for ourselves, like fat, skinny, tall, short, blonde, curly hair, etc but just in a way for reference when talking about a person or directly to that person. So you may often hear words like: “Moreno, morena / morenito, morenita” (male or female brown skinned people or in diminutive like browny), “negrita, negrito/ negrota, negrote” (female, male little or big black skinned people, in diminutive so it doesn’t sound in a bad way or bad tone, often with affection, it would be like blacky and big when you are taller or extremely good looking or hot for us). For all Asian people you could hear: chinito (Chinese, again in diminutive way soy it doesn’t be interpretated badly, for us every Asian looking person comes from China, I don’t now why).
For other people expect that we try to figure about where you come from and use your country name to speak about you. Maybe this words sounds incorrectly but you can be certain that it’s not in a prejudice way. Once we introduce ourselves and know your names we will use your name properly but still use the other words to talk about you with others.
We love everyone, if you want to visit mexico, expect a lot of warmness, friend making, we like to hug and kiss cheeks a lot (just in friendly ways, and it’s extremely common between us, so if you get a hug we are comfortable with you. But if you want to avoid being hugged, kissed or physical contact in general just say it directly and there will be no problem at all, just know if there are 2 or more of you we will like more the one that hugs jajaja) and also expect soft flirtation everywhere (the staring thing for example), we will try to present you to more friends, partying, and expect lots of good treats in general.
For the bad things just really in using your common sense to avoid bad situations or to avoid bad people, places and areas, everything else you will enjoy México and our culture. Last tip! In cities or little towns No one drinks tap water, no one will give tap water to anyone, so every glass of water you ask for will be from a big sealed water jug (for free in many stablishments) or from a bottle (always with cost), both are the same water always treated, just different companies. Enjoy your traveling!

Thanks for the tips! I'm curious, do you think my last name may be an issue? Escobar , I get looks and comments here. Curious how Mexico would look at an Escobar. Never going to Columbia. Lol
@@jul.escobar Nah, don't think so, maybe some comments or jokes about it being similar to escoba but other than that, they're shouldn't be a problem
There* XD
LOL I get that in the US. Doesn't faze me here but I don't know what other countries may think of the name.
It's amazing that you feel that way! And no wonders, you are ASTONISHING!!
Thank you so much 🥺
