In honor of Astral Chain's 3rd anniversary, please enjoy my first ever combo video!
Many thanks to high level ASTRAL CHAIN players Drayzher and Hawkseclipse. They've spent countless hours experimenting with this incredibly unique combat system. Some of the techniques featured in this video (Sword Legion 360 offset, Aerial Offset, skill cast repeat, instant chain bind) were discovered by them. I can't thank them enough for their time and effort, and for inspiring me to make this combo video. Please check them out if you are interested in high level ASTRAL CHAIN play. These guys are the real deal.

#ASTRALCHAIN #アストラルチェイン #combomad
I hope this video inspires other players to try their hand at Astral Chain's combo game. Here are some of my notes to get you started.
//// Enemies ////
There are only three enemies in the game that produce consistent and true hit reactions suitable for combo videos: HUM-C-84DF5-00, Aberration (training room), and Astraeus.
HUM-C-84DF5-00: 1000 HP
Astraeus: 3350 HP
Aberration (training room): Infinite
//// Hit Reactions ////
To determine the hit reactions for each Player and Legion attack, I would recommend using the Training Room program "Chain Jump Attack". This room features two passive Aberrations with infinite health. Any combos practiced in this room will work practically against HUM-C-84DF5-00 and Astraeus.
You can also use the Training Room tutorial "Slashing". However, this features HUM-C-84DF5-00 that attacks periodically. This training program is not as prefferable due to this automated behavior.
//// Practical Application ////
For the enemy HUM-C-84DF5-00, you may find that it dies too quickly. Because this enemy has only 1000HP, here are some tips to workaround this limitation.
- Use the drink "Bone Potage". This reduces attack power by 25% for 1 minute.
- Your X-Baton's attack power is doubled when a Legion is called. Find an appropriate balance between calling and dismissing your Legion.
In general, Astraeus is a better enemy for combo showcases due to it having 3350HP. However, the scenarios where it spawns are rather limited...
//// Astraeus Locations ////
The following File 12 cases are my personal favorites for experimenting with Astraeus.
> Personal Recommendation for Experimentation
>>> R3-9: Zone 09
>>>>>> Astraeus appears in the first fight against Pygmalion. This is my personal favorite for experimenting with Astraeus in a practical manner.
> Other recommended encounters
>>> R3-2: Zone 36
>>>>>> Featured in Combo #2. Appears in second wave.
>>> R3-W ARI
>>>>>> Featured in the final combo. Appears in Wave 1 with Capaneus and Eris. Eris has a large amount of health (~8000HP) so it is recommended to use the Fishy Water drink to more quickly kill this enemy.
>>> R1-14 Sector V
>>>>>> Two encounters but it takes place inside the Sector V marketplace. The camera can have difficulty keeping up with the enemy and framerate performance is a little bit inconsistent in this area.
>>> R3-A1: Astral Plane
>>>>>> Appears in the second wave with Capaneus and Ice humanoid enemy. Also appears in the third wave once Astraeus-Capaneus is at 66% health. It is recommended to use the first encounter as the second encounter can be difficult to manage.
> Other encounters (not as highly recommended due to long reload/re-encounter times)
>>> R1-16: Harmony Square
>>>>>> Astraeus appears in the final wave but it is difficult to manage due to Kelaino. Not recommended.
>>> R2-6: Zone 36
>>>>>> It takes a while to start fighting Astraeus but features three appearances. Okay but there are better options.
>>> R2-13: Maison Forest
>>>>>> Appears in Wave 6 of 8. Not recommended.
>>> R1-W: Sector V
>>>>>> Astraeus appears in the 15th (final) wave. Not recommended.
>>> R2-W: Police HQ
>>>>>> Astraeus appears in Wave 13 of 14. Not recommended.
//// Misc. Notes ////
For practical combos, use the HUD element "Damage Numbers" to estimate the total numerical damage points performed in your combo. This allows the player to determine how much health an enemy will need before the finishing blow will be delivered.
In addition, I would recommend playing the Training Room programs mentioned above using the "Unchained" difficulty mode, with the "Energy Optimization" option enabled. This allows the player to avoid worrying about Legion energy usage while labbing various techniques or combos.
A really stupid question, how do you select the training room version of the training program? i always get send to the open area version and I can't find a way to change that.
Or is that aberration part of the Jin mission in Mission 2 and that's the only way to fight it?
are there really so few enemies which react consistently to being hit? that's such a damned shame, i expected platinum to know better
Astral Chain with Xenoblade X music is something I never knew I needed until now.
The selfie combo at 1:29 is beyond next level.
That is just flexxing on your enemy at that point. Nobody deserves to get embarrassed that badly.
It was insane
I had the biggest smile on my face when Uncontrollable started playing. This video is absolutely fantastic, and as a fan of both the Xenoblade series (Especially X) and Astral Chain, this is like an awesome fever dream. You've mastered the combat in hilariously sick ways, and the GLORIOUS editing just tops it off. I could go on and on, but if you couldn't tell already, I think this video is freaking sick.
I cannot wait to see what more you have to offer. Keep being awesome!
I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought it was an X sequel in the initial reveal trailer... From the start of this project, I knew that Uncontrollable perfectly meshed with this game's aesthetic so I'm happy that you enjoyed it! Generally speaking, I plan to focus mostly on sporadic music covers but I hope you stick around! Thank you for watching!
Happy to see a kind of xenoblade astral chain collaboration those 2 series are beyond amazing
Beautifully made video, the combos themselves are insane, but the quality of cuts and editing also raise this to an impressive level of awesomeness! :D
wow i hade no idea this game got that technically good, thanks chrysaora, your the best and i cant wait to beat this game!!!
I was surprised by the low amount of combo montages of Astral Chain (or maybe it's just yt search to blame) but I'm so glad I found this one! I definitely wasn't expecting such a well pieced together video montage, with nice direction, sick transitions, many highlights and awesome graphic and audio decisions on top!
Uncontrollable is such a good song too, I also thought it was a Xenoblade X sequel when the first trailer started.
Thank you for showing us this incredible work!
This is how a modern Chaos Legion would play
Criminally underrated game
Pure Platinum, amirite.
Amazing stuff!
I wish X had gameplay like this, music flows so well.
This guy has to have played Devil May Cry
Great work! I was actually thinking a while ago it would be cool if someone used Uncontrollable for an AC video, wasn't expecting it to actually happen though.
*+UNSUGARCOATED*
I cracked up and had the biggest grin hearing Xs music, one of my fav games ever put to one of my other favorites, and also you’re INSANEEE with this game. How quick do you rock the final boss or aether?
I can typically handle the final boss pretty easily but Aether is actually a challenge for me. The dude just has so many attacks! It's really difficult to find an opening unless you create a specific build to shred through his health.
@@chrysaoravioli I believe in you
This game has so much style to it. Sucks that its only on the switch.
I hate this game but even I have to admit that the combos were fire. Nice stuff!
Why do you hate the game? just curious, what you don't like
@@kaioshinon5954
- Boring rpg padding systems that waste your time
- Awful control scheme, no rebindable controls like nier and one of the Presets fucks your aiming controls so bad I wonder if it was even playtested
- Clunky feeling, and 30 fps
- Enemies have too much hyper armor making them completely uninteractive
- You are either completely stunlocking enemies or fighting frustrating battles where you are forced to be passive. Compare to other good pg games that have a nice ebb and flow to their combat
- Awful and repetitive environments
- Number of enemies you can do cool combos on is limited
- Derivative mechanics from TFD that makes you wish you were playing that instead
- RPG stats for your weapon that makes weapon damage variable
- Slow ass upgrade system, takes forever to get moves
There were other issues but frankly I haven’t played this game in a long time. But I remember I had a lot more issues when I played it back in the day; too bad I don’t want to remember how a game I despised plays. Hope this satiates your curiosity
1:39 the disrespect is insane, fucking awesome combo
I gotta get my hands on this game at some point
this guy deserve more attention
gal* 😉👍
Nice, i was waiting for this vid all those days and tbh is better than i thought tho I dont know much about Astral Chain techs, players & how much reliant is that game to combo making approach this doesnt mean ur action get less flashy to me they're nice especially on 2rd combo at 1:04 and also I loved how u put a photo mode feature ig? To finish 3rd combo at 1:17. Hope see more from u in future!
This probably is the first time that I've seen someone get close to this game's skill ceiling.
I am LIVING for the literal photo finish at 1:39, holy fuck
When I realized that this type of combo was possible, I was laughing so hard. It's not often you can do something like this in an action game.
all the choreographies were impressive. Although obviously the ones you used in the training room stole my attention, since they are the ones that use the most advanced off-set link techniques. The first one in the training room with the "Spin" of the weapon with "Sword" surprised me a lot, the off-set that is linked to the "Sync" independently, is something that I have never seen before in a combo, and take advantage of that to attach the spinning swords and that they could be effective during the entire sequence blew my mind!
That combo is probably one of my favorites because it took a lot of trial and error to create. I knew I wanted to use Sword's 360 Spin but I kept running into the issue where the enemy would fall to the ground during the startup animation. So, the Round Sword was added which helped with retaining the offset.
It was rather tricky to come up with good offset combos that "hid" the offset. I didn't want to make the offset move too obvious so I'm pretty happy with how that combo turned out.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! This video wouldn't have possible without you and Hawke's experimentation.
1:40 ok so like you’re just the main character, I see.
2:12 to 2:36. No one talks about the cutscene edit. It so good 👍. Also gotta love the sync attack snipe on chimera
1:39 I love this! 🤣
this game is underrated gem
I need to start playing this game again. Mother of GOD! 😧
Beautiful mad. In particular the camerawork in that first combo was incredibly slick and immediately got me giddy. Also I don't feel I need to mention how sexy those training room combos were but I will. Definitely inspiring me to go out and make another one of these, great job!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'll be looking forward to your second combo video when it releases!
Did I just watch an actual combo video for this game!? I'm sad that combo opportunities are so limited, but I'll take anything to give this game another chance.
Played this game for 30+ hours on PT standard and didn't even know I could do half the stuff in this video
This video might as well be labeled as pr0n. Because it's making me act up
Beautifully edited! Glad someone shines a light on this grossly underrated game
Nah bro I actually need to know how you play the game like this
One of the best Astral Chain combo mad videos there is
how did you do the move in 3.02-3.04? i've never seen it
Everyone loves the Framerate Dimension!
Favorite combo ender is axe’s mine!!!
Xenoblade X music!? Didn't expect that.
the sentimentality... it hits!
that was absolutely brillant, makes me want to revisit this game.
Man, I wish I could see more high level play like this for Astral Chain.
いちいち操作制度がエグすぎる
Your fuckin good dude❤
Za Warudo !!
This is absolutely insane. I always knew I wasn't incredible with combos, but thought I was decent. Boy was I wrong after watching this. Actually incredible work with the gameplay AND the immaculate editing.
awesome
God this game deserves a sequel
Hope Platinum makes Astral Chain 2 along with Bayonetta 4.
Fuckkk, insane. I am no noob in fighting games but I am obviously still button smashing in this game. Hands down to you bro
Such an underrated Xenoblade song. I was hoping by the title that this song would be used, and it's so great! Such an awesome video.
The title reminded me of XCX, and lo and behold, the first thing I hear is Uncontrollable. Instant sub.
So this is how the game is meant to be played...
Masterful, that was simply incredible (and you've even put some Xenoblade X music, you'd deserve a like just for that)
Astral Chain DOES have air combos, nice!
I gotta play this game again.
HOLY SHIT. Sick combos!
Made me want to play this game again too!
When I saw Uncontrollable in the title, I knew it was X's song. It goes perfect with Astral. Amazing video!
Really great video, love to see more high level stuff for Astral Chain
Thank you! I have some other projects I want to tackle first before I return to Astral Chain but I do plan on properly covering some of the tech I used in this video and other unexplained oddities.
@@chrysaoravioli looking forward to it!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 OH MY GOD BEATIFUL VIDEO
ACh!+Combo+Sawano = I love it xD
Cool combos! Love the throwing the trash part 😂
this is the best combo video I have seen of this game it is absolute amazing
awesome video
how did you manage to change legion this optimally without using the legion menu mid battle? or did you prepared the rotation?
There are two methods that I used.
Method 1: Set the order of the Legions so that you only have to tap the "switch Legions" button. The only disadvantage is that it was annoying to relearn the Legion order since I was accustomed to a specific layout. I used this for a few of the combos in this video before I discovered a second method...
Method 2: Fast dial switching. Normally, when you switch Legions using the dial (Y + Left Stick), the game will go into slow-motion so that you can more easily select a Legion. However, if you perform this input quickly, you can switch to any Legion without the dial menu appearing or the slow-motion effect occurring. In other Astral Chain combo videos, I noticed that the slow-motion effect broke the presentation of the combo so I wanted to find a solution to this problem.
This is absolutely amazing 👏
Is this dmc level of complicated tho? Or alot easier
I've never played Devil May Cry so I don't actually know. Astral Chain is very much its own thing so I would approach this game differently from how one would approach DMC.
this video is awesome!
certified banger
Круто исполняешь ✌
Song name please?
The song is listed in the description.
How could they air backdash? That sick.!
I'll explain it properly one day since I'm using a different input. But for starters, you can do it by using Arm's Legion Action, dash, then quickly disengage the Legion Action to still retain the same vertical height.
@@chrysaoravioli did you input reverse dash by not locking on at moment like dmc?
@@tomo2159 I've never played DMC but I imagine it's much simpler than it.
Using Type A control scheme once you're in the air...
1. Press the Legion Action button (LB) with the Arm Legion
2. Press a direction on the left stick while pressing dodge (B)
3. Once you've reached a desired distance, press Legion Action (LB) to disengage so that you can input a player attack.
@@chrysaoravioli wow thanks bro , i will try it in the future
I enjoyed the game but the combat is bad. The whole video is just legions skills and legions rotation, with a few basic attacks in between. The legion's skills have so much hitstun that you can do whatever, attacks autotracks the ennemies, no need for timing or positionning. I was hype for the game when it came out and it still is today my biggest disappointement on Switch and when it comes to action games.
The video is nice though, it really is Astral Chain in a nutshell : good looking, but no depth.
I've never thought this game could be played in this way...made my play pity.
To be fair, this sort of play style is only applicable to very few enemies in the game. Most of Astral Chain's enemies are a little too restrictive unfortunately...
The only Nintendo switch game I actually liked 😂
Dude, You are the Donguri of Bayo 3 and Astral Chain. The puppet-master style suits you so well!!
