No joke, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Morello himself commented here on this. He’s that type of normal music geek. Great vid!

Doug, thank you for producing this.
I have been priviliged to see Bruce and Tom play the last version three times, when the E Street Band performed in Sydney in 2013 and 2014. Tom's playing is a sonic assault on the senses and I think it is the most extraordinary piece of guitar playing I have ever seen or heard. Morello has the skill and flair to pull it off where a lesser player would not be able to do it. It is truly astonishing and hearing it is one of those occasions that make you remember how good music can make you feel. Definitely one of my favourite songs. I love the original acoustic version, but the electric reworking is my preference.
Of course, the similarity with this reworking to Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix is obvious. Hendrix did his "All Along the Watchtower" and now Dylan and his band play the Hendrix version, or something like it.

I used to sing in a Bruce Springsteen tribute band called Jungleband :), and this song was my favourite of the evening whenever we played, especially after our guitar player went absolutely berserk! Ah, those were the days! Unfortunately, we parted our ways even though we had a setlist of, like, 4 hours. Hope one day we'll play again...

One of the greatest performances of the song. I think that I saw in an interview to Tom Morello that Bruce change the tune of his voice to match with Tom's vocal range.

A studio version of this song was redone on High Hopes, Springsteen's album released in 2014 including Tom Morello's guitar. They also redid 41 Shots where Morello again goes big on his guitar, making the song all the more fantastic.

Morello's guitar solo was definitely inspired by Neil Young. Good choice and a subtle ode.

he fabricated it from other Raeg Against The Machine solo's.. Chack them live, you'll hear parts of this solo in certain songs, he cut them out and glued them together

    • @bwcbiz

In general, instrumental solos by Springsteen and other members of the E Street band tend to follow the melody and are integral parts of the song structure. This contrasts with Morello's (and many others') who take the opportunity to improvise and show their musicianship with entirely new variations on the themes of a song.

Holy shit... that last version of this song was amazing. I've always loved both Springsteen's and Rage against the Machine's versions. This last live version though... beats the hell out of anything I've heard before. Thanks for showing us these three versions. All good, but one perfect.

Zach made it sound like more of a current social commentary or protest song, a song about more than it was, yet maintained it’s original message, true to the novel and original by Bruce 👊🏼💯🙂

@@simonmacconmidhe9489 just my opinion, as a musician, on how the sound was changed up enough to make it as relevant now, as it was then. No worries 🤷‍♂️

Woody Guthrie (as you said) wrote a song about Tom Joad- in 1940! He and Bruce tell the journey differently, but both end with the famous speech by Joad at the very end of The Grapes of Wrath.
Bruce released this as an acoustic song. Tom did a great cover. But these two together: fire!
Thank you for your analysis. I love Jackson Browne too. And Dylan and dozens maybe hundreds of great songwriters. Neil Young. Joni. The list is so long. I’m 67, been around awhile and have been going to concerts since age 14. I’m in NYC so you know I’ve had the opportunity to see everyone in many genres.
The songs that speak about social injustice are the ones that move me perhaps the most. Phil Ochs, my hero. I wonder if anyone has ever reacted to his protest songs? Thanks again; I’ve just subscribed. First came here to see your reaction to Jinjer/Pisces. This is the second I’ve seen. Will check out more and also look forward to the ones to come.

When I listened to the Ghost of Tom Joad for the first time, it hit me straight between the eyes. I don't know why. Because with my "school-trained English" from the GDR I was not able to follow the journey through this song.
By the way, the whole album feels like the great works of Bob Dylan. Especially "The New Timer" does. And this was a bit different compared to the predecessors "Human Touch" and "Lucky Town". So, I was surprised back in the days.
Back to the performance. Yes, together with Tom, this song gains a new quality. Well, this exact performance was done closely after the Lehman Brothers failure. This situation raised a new depression. And this performance tells the story completely new. I like it very much. Thank you for the inspiration.

The ratm version you played is a studio track they stacked over their live version. It was shot in Irvine 1996(or 97) and it is available in its original on the ratm DVD which is very raw and angry than this studio version.

"Just throw the delay on, and all the sudden you're at the circus... It's a lot more fun of course. It's the same exercise, maybe get a little bit less out of it technically, but's kind of like eating candy."

Hey Doug, love your videos!! Would love to see your reaction to Spectre by Radiohead. It is a hauntingly beautiful composition written and performed by Radiohead, and it was meant to be the theme tune to the James Bond movie Spectre, but was rejected for it being too dark, adn Sam Smith got the rights to the theme song. I think since you both love Radiohead and you have an amazing understand of music composition it would be the perfect match!
