Thanks for putting this up. Your video helped walk me through the project. I used a loaner tool set from Advance Auto. On reinstallation of the fan unit I found that using a wood working clamp on the upper shroud compressed it allowing a bit easier access to the shaft nut. Be very careful not to crossthread the fan nut as you reinstall. I used a Dorman replacement and found the last inch of the wiring harness was exposed. I covered the bare wire insulation with electrical tape to protect it from exposure and chafe.
I have changed mine out once and it’s not hard but it’s not easy either - took me half an afternoon! After 2.5 yrs now - My truck is again getting hot 200 degrees engine temp (in 100 degree Houston weather) at idol in drive thru line at McDonald’s and ac in not even cool. I’m thinking about supporting my local mechanic to change it as I have better things to do! 😆 Great video!
Thanks for taking the time to do this. I ended up buying the fan clutch tool from Amazon (~$50.00) and an air hammer for the task. I'd rather have the tools for any future use plus it's still less expensive than paying someone to do the job. I came to your video to double-check on the direction to turn the nut and a review of the task. Mine is an 03 3500 SRW Quad and it took some time to work through the stubborn nut. Ended up using a long pry bar wedged against the belt pulley nuts to keep it from rotating and that did the trick after some start/stop attempts with the air hammer. For the fan assembly removal, I worked from underneath the truck. Before unscrewing/removing the assembly, I put a piece of cardboard between the radiator and fan to minimize any radiator fin damage. Once the fan assembly was screwed off and with some patience it was easy to snake/rotate her down and then back up with the new clutch installed. Just remember to pull out the sheet of cardboard before connecting the wire connector and installing the bottom shield. It was an easy task once the nut was broken loose .
I have a 2004 2500 with the cummins 5.9. I had to change my clutch fan. I watched you video for the instructions [Thank You]. After looking at the bottom side of the fan shroud I noticed that I have a 2 piece shroud. After removing the 2 plastic rivet things, the bottom half goes up about 1/2 an inch then comes back down to remove. I removed the clutch just as you said but took it out the bottom. About a 30 minute job. MFG date on my Dodge is Sept 03
I’ve got the same AC issue on idle. Live in Vegas and we are peaking at 115 degrees these days. The truck will stay right around 180 on idle since the engine isn’t under load but will keep climbing as long as it’s under load. The part where I’m confused about is even at highway speeds I’ll climb sometimes even past 210 degrees. I have an oem 180 degree Cummins thermostat. I think I’ll try the fan clutch and see if that changes anything
Thanks , i just bought my 2006 cummins and had no idea what was wrong with it , i had my suspicions about the clutch or the thermostat, but this is exactly what my truck is doing so now im going to change out my clutch thanks and keep up the videos… thanks
Thanks man, I wish I would of watched this b4 I paid some jack wagon 680.00 to fix my AC. I did have a thought about the fan but figured he would catch what ever it was . Funny thing is they took my hole dash out chasing the problem.
Just learned mine is bad after charging the a/c and has been since day one of owning it. Previous owner put in a new radiator because it didn't blow cold . Mines stuck real bad & just not knowing if reverse thread or standard since mine is an early 03 with suttle differences in wiring . Another person showed a vid explaining direction of blade angle determines thread direction
If it is time for a radiator flush, it is so much easier just to take the AC condenser out of the way (gently), take the inner cooler out of the way pull the radiator, but good video nonetheless.!
I got to do my 06 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel 5 speed tomorrow. I rat build a nest in radiator shoud a stick was in there and got caught in the fan. The cable to fan clutch got destroyed with fan blades. The fans blades broke off and destroyed my radiator. I was driving a real steep incline in 4 low when this happened. Luck I drove a short distance to the house to access the damage. What a costly repair. Radiator, fan clutch, fan and antifreeze.

I got a question you might be able to answer. On my 2008 2500 cummins, i have the same setup there, and the fan seems to move with a reasonable amount of resistance, and it moves plenty of air at idle. My issue is that sometimes the fan just seems to be locked in for the whole duration of the drive. Checking the temp gauge, and it reads just under 200 degrees. When rpm goes up, the fan is just noisy as can be, and same with idling down. Would this be an issue with the fan clutch, or would it be an issue of the ecu telling it to kick on? Mind you, i dont use the A/C.
Probably your water pump. Pulley bearing wears out, gets squeaky. If you ignore it, it'll shred your serpentine belt which can damage other components when it comes off...like fan blades or fan clutch wiring harness. I speak from experience. Try spraying the water pump pulley with water (while running) and see if squeal goes away temporarily.
Having troubles with getting stuck in 2nd and 3rd gear, pulled this code and read that replacing it would help the shifting as well. Any truth to that? I know the wire from the fan clutch is on the same line as the tranny.
