Leica watch is fashion brand. Exactly like "Diesel" or "Michael Kors". In my opinion Leica could maybe invest more of its resources in quality control and design of cameras, to avoid M11 type of issues in the future.
My favourite watch at the moment is one I built myself! Seiko sell their NH3X movements to retail (seagull and ETA have stopped doing so), and lots of people are selling cases, hands and dials to fit them. I bought a few bits from EBay and AliX and put together an NH34 "Pepsi GMT". There's even a company called DIY Watch Club that are selling kits. This all led me down a path to trying my hand at watch repair and I've built up a collection of older bits to service and fix, which includes a coupe of vintage Landeron 148 chronographs from the 50s that are really lovely things. Also have a Seiko Pogue to sort once I've stopped losing parts quite so often.
Very cool! You are more skilled than me. I have seen lots of modded Seiko on eBay so it's great to meet someone that makes these. (Did you see the Peter McK video where some guy makes him a modded watch, check it out).
An ancestor of mine was Charles Ingersoll who made his name with the "dollar (pocket) watch" (Ingersoll Watches). The brand has been sold several times, but it is always fun to find versions and adverts from the early days. Proud of that heritage and nice to see your respect for the old style! Cheers!
Great watch vid! Always good to see someone who share multiple interest as myself! The Hamilton Railroad expo back had to be a mod right? I doubt they had expo case back from back in the day. I think it is an even better idea than expo case back on wrist watch, because you rarely see them when you are wearing it, but pocket watch you do! Speaking of Hamilton, I always thought you wear a Khaki Field from your past video, now I know it is a Kinetic! Everytime Leica watch ads show up, I wonder who made their movement, I wonder if A Lange & Sohne still provides for them, if so, that will make sense for their price point. Every watch guy had a Seiko, I too was introduced to watches from Seiko, and I worn a few of them through out my childhood until I start branching out when I finished university.
Thanks Rex! Yes a guy in the US puts old RR watches in display backs and the main reason I wanted the watch was to see the inside. There are originals, called Salesman watch. Came with clear back to show customers... but yes mine is a mod. My watch, hmm owe I think it was a Seiko 5 in the past, not the Kinetic as it doesn't really work. To be clear the movement was designed by a team including an ex-A.Lange & Sohne employee* Yes Seiko get blamed a lot I think haha ;)
Thanks! I know of them but their designs don't jump out at me. I'm very visual so I buy with my eyes (though I hear Sinn make great watches). Thanks for mentioning they are near Frankfurt. Perhaps I can visit in the future.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I was going to say it's probably a good thing you didn't drive north to Frankfurt to visit Sinn's showroom. I suspect that if none of the designs you've seen jumped out at you it's because you haven't had a complete look at their catalogue. Best tool watches coming out of Germany, IMO. Very unique technologies in many of their watches, too, not shared by other manufacturers. Like tegimenting, for example. But Nomos are another great German brand, though...congrats on a fine purchase.
Same here - I must be the most unsophisticated viewer here. As long as it tells the time, I don't care if it came from Leica or a gas station bargain bin..!
Nice one! Big in to watches too - definitely something to do with micro-mechanics... Another very Leica watch is the Sinn 556: German, good value and a minimal black/white/red design. Great macro on the NOMOS - you really brought out the chalky texture of the dial - very nice!
What a lot of people realize that Germany has a long horological history in the development of clockworks and watches. The center of German watch and clocks was in Glashutte. Look at some of the top watches from Germany…..Glashutte Original, A. Lange & Sohne (sorry about the umlauts), Sinn, Nomos, etc. They were also famous for their WWII pilot watches….Laco, Lange (ALS), Wempe, Stowa, and IWC. It’s great to see Leica making watches. They are making more and more of the movements. Worth a look if you have a Leica store in your area.
Thanks Gary, yes Glashutte was/is the centre of watch excellent in Germany as I see. Funny that all the skills are located in a small area. Yes many date back from the WWII pilot watches as you mention. (Stowa make nice movements.. they are on my radar too).
Hey Matt - I have the same problem as you - skinny wrists - I realise you have a Leica now but I can thoroughly recommend the Rolex Air King - it fits perfectly on the wrist but its not a gaudy obtrusive timepiece - it sits nicely and is less intrusive than most of the other Rolex watches - all in silver with a metal strap and clasp, easy to find a dealer for maintenance - good stuff
Thanks Nelson, I appreciate your suggestion but yes as someone commented I resisted the Leica watches (too big..and expensive) and got a nice slim Nomos.
Thanks! I'd ignored them for a few months but then saw Paul's and then saw another in a watch store and once I found the red one it was a done deal. I've been looking for the perfect Leica watch for me for ages.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I had a similar experience, actually. I bought a vintage lens when I was there, and the guy who helped me also had a rather nice Leica watch😄
Wow! That Nomos you bought is gorgeous, kind of on the expensive side for me. My first automatic was Seiko as well, bought one of lower-end auto divers, sold it and found a nice SKX009 off of Ebay - unmodded ! Microbrands offer some interesting autos for reasonable prices. Great watch photos, very attractive not quite as attractive as your models ! Sikinny wrist as well!
Thanks! Yes I never thought I’d be spending since money on a watch but I work hard so once in a while doesn’t hurt. Seiko make some great watches, I have a few. Congrats finding your SKX!
@ You are correct. I saw the title and I got to the point where you were being showed the Leica watch and I couldn’t watch anymore Because I assumed you bought it.
Beautiful watch, Matt! I collect old electric wrist watches. They use a button battery. The balance wheel is driven by a permanent magnet and an electro magnet that occilates moving the balance wheel driving the watch. The first button type batterys were designed to power these watches. Some were moderately priced. Even Seiko produced them. These went away surplanted by the quarts watches. Enjoy your new watch!
What is amazing to me that I started my fascination with watches and such small mechanical instrumets on my wrists. Now I am realising that even the E. Leitz started as a watchmaker as well asnd turn to making tha cameras, instead. Now you are becoming the waith collector as myself since I was a little boy. This is incredible. Good luck to you.
Thanks! Yes I got it from Dad. Yes there is a big overlap between mechanical watches and mechanical cameras. Watches some of the watch repair videos is like a camera repair video x1000. So interesting.
Great looking watch! I picked up a NOMOS mechanical watch this past year and two Junghans watches several years ago (one really nice mechanical unit and one quartz). I like the Leica Monochrom watches, but they cost more than I’m willing to spend on a watch. Your Hamilton pocket watch is beautiful. Get an SL2 and an SL lens. Then you can use your photo kit outdoors during UK winters.
Thanks John and nice to hear that you both know of and own a Nomos! Junghans are a bit too minimal for me but still nice. I'm a nice weather lover sadly so no gear will make me stand in the cold and rain for no reason.
I must be strange because I have never really been in to watches. However, that tide may be changing. I am beginning to appreciate the workmanship in producing these wonderful time pieces. I like the open back glass allowing you to peer in to mechanics of the watch, wonderful. Now you have opened up a can of worms... I love the watch you bought, the red Nomos and as I could see myself wearing one. What have you done to me? LOL
Sorry Rouben! I think other watch channels did the same to me (though not the red Nomos as you won't find many videos showing it.. I did look!). Yes it's hard not to appreciate them once you see the movements.
Your Nomos Club Campus is qualitatively more beautiful than any Leica watch. The Nomos is made without compromise and tells time. Everything else is a distraction. Conversely, the ethos of a Leica camera is that it captures light, and everything else is a distraction. Your aesthetic was clearly expressed by choosing the Club Campus, the saturated red dial, and the soft grey Alcantara bracelet. Stunning combination. Leica cameras are ergonomic and design masterpieces. No camera manufacturer can touch Leica's purity. Despite the Leica name, however, their watches don't touch the acumen in Leica's cameras. The Nomos Club Campus does. I'm not surprised that the Lecia salesman was wearing a Nomos. In the side-by-side comparisons of the Nomos to these other watches, the Nomos looked clean and clear while the other watches were fussy. The Nomos Club Campus is more of a Leica than the Leica watch. The Nomos is a minimalist masterpiece. Congrats. You have a great eye.
So next roadtrip to Glashutte? :) Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by the Leica watches. My prejudice was probably an expensive money grab from the brand name. In person they are quite nice though and surprisingly interesting. Bit too modern for me though, my grail would be the original Seamaster 300 from Omega, but like you it's the first serious watch brand I was introduced to and then it kind of sticks!
Thanks Thomas! Yes I know you are Mr Omega (they are nice!) but yes it was interesting to see the Leica watches up close. Looking forward to the next road trip!

Some nice watches there. I’d like to make a recommendation for one that may not be on your radar. The Cartier Tank. No matter what watches are in my collection I almost always find myself wearing the Tank. In my opinion it’s perfect in every way.
Don't you mean you bought a Leica-branded watch as opposed to Leica made. I had not heard they were actually manufacturing watches as they do cameras but rather have a watch company make them. True or are they made by Leica in their own Wetzlar factory (including movements as opposed to just cases)?
If you watch the video you see I actually buy a Nomos watch not the Leica. (It was the watch the Leica salesman was wearing, similar). Yes correct Leica watches are made in Germany by Lehmann Präzision (not on site at Leica).
When I first saw the episode title I looked up Leica watch prices and thought, "Hmm..RUclips channels must pay really well." ;-) The Nomos looks great. My wife bought me a Japanese Citizen watch many years ago. It is powered by light, has been through two accidental wash and dry cycles and still keeps ticking. BTW Going to pick up my SL in Montpellier today, a mere 9 months after I sent it in for repair.
Haha yes I certainly don't earn enough to buy Leica watches haha! Excellent conclusion! I hear Citizen watches go forever like Seiko so good choice. Enjoy your SL when you get it!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks. Just picked it up yesterday. Might have to contact you for a session as I have largely forgotten ho to use it after 9 months with the Lumix. ;-)
Mondaine makes very cool watches that match perfectly the Leica minimalist design with a touch of red. They are Swiss made and they copy the design of the official clocks of the swiss train stations . And one model, the Stop2go, has a very unique, cool and useless function. The seconds hand stops 2 seconds at 12, just like the real station clock which use these 2 seconds to synchronize themselves together everywhere in the country. The original has a white dial, but there is a very nice one with a black dial.
Love the Leica watch designs, it's hard to know if they're worth the money without seeing them and knowing what the movement is (do Leica actually make their own movements, I can't imagine they do??). Your Nomos is really nice, I've not heard of them before but will have to browse their site now. I'm a bit boring and for me it's always the Omega Speedmaster, just love the classic design. Smart without being flashy, a bit like a Leica. :P I also love the IWC Portugese and Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso. Actually, there's loads of amazing watches I want but they're all crazy money and Leica stuff takes care of using all that up. 😁
Thanks Henley! My Patreon friend Thomas loves his Speedmaster too! Yes definitely more nice watches than money haha. No Leica don’t make the movements but they are made in Germany.
Hey Matt✌ I was already under the assumption that you bought a Leica watch👌 I know that watches that are handmade, including Leica, have their proud price, but when you said the prices, I swallowed a little😁 I used to like wearing watches. But I've been using a Garmin for a few years now and it's perfectly adequate for tracking on tours or to easily track my steps. Nevertheless, as always a great video, I'll watch the next one you brought out tomorrow after the tour, as I still have to work 😒Emergency a ride is cancelled, although there is some extra pocket money. Lg Anderl
Matt, this is nothing. The other day Amazon sold me a Sekonda by mistake too. Man, you really need to leave your credit card at home. PS: loved every second of it.
Here in Australia the leica zm2 cost $22,000 dollars 🥵 double the price of the grand seiko hibeat , similar price to a Rolex . 😮 I wonder is this watch hold the value as good as leica lens .
Matt I think you been blinded by Leica These watches seem to be completely overpriced and with. I history of watch making behind them I personally can’t believe people are buying these
Thanks, I didn't say I'd buy a Leica watch and I shared the steep prices. I just shared the facts on them then bought something cheaper and to my eyes nicer for my wrists.
You are such a bad influence. LOL I got a nice GMT Baltic a while back and just got a Casio solar powered. I have a wonderful old Seiko with moon phase and day/date. No Leica watches in my future. I think fine small mechanical things are guy thing. The old RR watches are really good and quite accurate. My old man scooped up a really good one from a pawn shop during a RR strike. ;o) Another good and interesting video, thanks.
nice video and very nice Nomos .. I love watches and I do have some very classic from the big brands Omega Rolex and Tudor ... but my favorit brand is a Swiss one : Glycine and specialy the old purist Airman from 1953. it is a real 24h00 watch that give also 2 or 3 time zone. Glycine was a watch for the Astronauts in the 50th. The modern production is based on the old vintage models with manuel or automatique movment. My favorit watches are GMT with at least 2 time zone or the true 24h00 watches like the Raketa (russian brand for the soldiers in the U boat or the soldiers in the Military base in the North Pole...)
Thanks Grom, I go through phases as you know and was less into watches when we last met. I think you were wearing a Rolex or a Tudor Chronograph from some video footage in London. I've hear of Glycine from my reading but not Raketa. I checked them out. Cool design!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom at the London meetup I had my Omega Speedmaster blue 2020 Tokyo Olympics limited ed. Another nice brand I like (and own a few) is Botta Design ... automatic watches with just one hand on a 24h dial ... very special but so fun to wear 🙂
Wowzers, their watches literally look like any other 5 dollar watch from Aliexpress, and their pricing made me cringe. I’m relieved you ended up with the Nomos and not Leica!
Haha, Leica employs 7 people for servicing the watches, but you have to wait ages to get a camera repaired. Looks like wrong priorities from a customer's perspective, but for Leica it will pay off. Leica does not manufacture the watches, they come from a manufacturer in Germany (Lehman Präzision). So it's just to make money.
Congratulations on the lovely NOMOS. Leica watches are not a good value, in my opinion. Their cameras are spectacular, but they have neither the brand equity nor the reputation in the horological world required to justify those prices. SINN watches, however, an outstanding value.
Thanks, I only wanted to cover Leica watches to inform people. I wasn’t going to buy one at such high prices. Americans made watches before the Swiss in the early 1900s so the American RR watch is my favourite.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks. Just picked it up yesterday. Might have to contact you for a session as I have largely forgotten ho to use it after 9 months with the Lumix. ;-)
I think you chose a great watch, however I think you should have gone with a black dial watch since you would normally tape over the red dot ;)
Haha thanks. I'm asking for that aren't I!
I have an IWC Spitfire XVI which I love. I need to replace the strap, so am humming and ha-ing about how best to do that….
Very nice! Yes straps can transform a watch so it's always fun selecting straps.
I ‘m with you on that choice, so many huge watches out there…way too big. The Nomos is the right size, classic, and modern in one.
Thanks Brian, yes I like the classic sizing and elegant look and I love the subtle nod to Leica with the 'red dot' face.
I'm not sure I'm ready for this to turn into the Mister Conspicuous Consumption of Veblen Goods channel...
Me neither, hopefully it will be a passing trend!
Thanks! I know the brand but I’ve not heard those exact details so thanks for sharing!
Next, the Leica LEITZ mobile phone.
I think there is one, but sold only in Japan, if memory serves.
Haha yes there was a Chinese camera with Leica lens some years ago, not sure about the latest models.
Hey Matt✌
I was already under the assumption that you bought a Leica watch👌 I know that watches that are handmade, including Leica, have their proud price, but when you said the prices, I swallowed a little😁 I used to like wearing watches.
Lg Anderl
Thanks Odin, yes Garmins have pulled me away from mechanical watches many times as I needed the data they gave.
Matt, this is nothing. The other day Amazon sold me a Sekonda by mistake too. Man, you really need to leave your credit card at home. PS: loved every second of it.
Haha, nice! Dad had quite a few Sekonda from memory. Yes I'll never be able to afford a house at this rate. Ah well
Nomos watches are very cool. Big fan of the Tangent myself.
Thanks Carl, yes Nomos have some lovely watches!
Hi Matt can you take pictures with these watches ? If not wtf are they doing on your channel …? :)
Haha because they are Leica watches (some), and because it's my channel so I include anything I find interesting!
@ it s your right Matt I was just surprised … and joking :)))
My favourite watch and I'm not kidding is a CASIO. cheap and cheerful ⏳️
Casio have a cult following! I have one.. It was the watch of my youth.
Here in Australia the leica zm2 cost $22,000 dollars 🥵 double the price of the grand seiko hibeat , similar price to a Rolex . 😮 I wonder is this watch hold the value as good as leica lens .
Wowzers. I hear there are almost zero second hand Leica watches so I'm sure they'll be a good investment long term.
Matt I think you been blinded by Leica
These watches seem to be completely overpriced and with. I history of watch making behind them
I personally can’t believe people are buying these
could you clarify your comment please........ " I history of watch making behind them"...?
@@dmystify1381 no history
Thanks, I didn't say I'd buy a Leica watch and I shared the steep prices. I just shared the facts on them then bought something cheaper and to my eyes nicer for my wrists.
The prices of Leica Watches make their cameras look like a steal! 😂
I know right haha!
😂😂😂
I have a Baume & Mercier Riviera titanium 39mm watch that I like very much.
Great looking watch! Nice choice
My old man scooped up a really good one from a pawn shop during a RR strike. ;o)
Another good and interesting video, thanks.
Thanks Sandy and great that your Dad scooped you a nice one!
I really like the Leica watches, but way out of my price range. My Posh mechanical watches are both British with Bremont and Christopher Ward.
Nice Phil. I do like some of the CW watches but eventually went with the Nomos for the red dot logo nod.
nice video and very nice Nomos ..
Great Matt
Thanks Mark!
That's me at 3:47!
Really! The watch or your arm in the stock photo!?
Wowzers, their watches literally look like any other 5 dollar watch from Aliexpress, and their pricing made me cringe. I’m relieved you ended up with the Nomos and not Leica!
Thanks. Yes the Nomos is much more me for sure!
I thought you bought a ZM1 and put a black sticker on the glass to cover the Leica name 😂😅😊
Haha that's brilliant! Thanks Rob
I bought a Coop Strap during my visit 😂
Haha, I managed to be good and buy nothing in Germany ..but then ordered a watch once I got back to the UK.
Some say Nomus makes the Leica watch..
Interesting!
Thanks, yes I know the ZM1 and ZM2 have the German movement vs the cheaper ZM11 with the Swiss movement.
😀
Thanks!
Congratulations on the lovely NOMOS. Leica watches are not a good value, in my opinion. Their cameras are spectacular, but they have neither the brand equity nor the reputation in the horological world required to justify those prices. SINN watches, however, an outstanding value.
Thank you! Yes I hear good things for SINN but I've very visual so the Nomos ticked my Leica red dot box.
It looks very complicated for a Leica watch!
Haha yes they are less Bauhaus than the Nomos watches for sure!
I Dont think leica make them there just using there brand name as far as I know
Correct, German made but not by Leica. Lehmann Präzision make them.
Thanks, I only wanted to cover Leica watches to inform people. I wasn’t going to buy one at such high prices. Americans made watches before the Swiss in the early 1900s so the American RR watch is my favourite.
