in my 50s with a physical job where i walk and carry stuff for 10 hours at least. it's thanks to this channel that i can still do my job. 3 months in i had so many foot and ankle problems, i thought my days were numbered..
This channel has raised my consciousness about my feet and awareness of foot health. I would add that I believe that awareness has also contributed to the elimination of my knee and lower back pain that no doctor could figure out, particularly since moving to the New York Area 12 years ago. Really good to see you back. Very informative video. Thank You!
Thank you for raising awareness to this. Looking at people's shoes is indeed interesting, the power of marketing is amazing. Hopefully the shoe companies with their marketing will catch on.
I'm lucky to have found this channel pretty early in life, confirming the ongoing research regarding different health issues. Transitioning immediately changed everything. It is quite painful and exhausting on the feet at first, but it pays off greatly. Immediately ditched all old shoes and not coming back. The only problem is rugged shoes for challenging terrain, existing options seem to be too expensive. Also somewhat sad seeing so many people around walking with their ankles falling inward who are unaware of damage being done with every step. Can't even find a way to explain it to my family. Love your channel!
Glad to see you back, Mark! I'm grateful for your research on foot health and gait cycle. It has completely changed my life and the way I walk and move. Took me (33m) about a year to realign my body and heal my messed up ankle, which I never thought was possible to heal. It would be interesting to know your take on the vision, jaws and posture connection. Neal Hallinan has lots of valuable information on the topic, however his stance on the barefoot shoes (for hard and flat surfaces) differs from yours and it would really be amazing if you two had a conversation. Lots of love to you brother! Stay grown & healthy!
At 15:49 “I find it disconcerting that podiatrists, of all people, have not blown the whistle on the danger of these shoes.” Well, recommending bad shoes helps podiatrists get more patients AKA customers!
Those pictures of bound feet, then the pictures of athlete feet...yikes. I've also seen a lot of sentiment online that barefoot is gross, and people expressing that not wearing socks is gross. I'm glad you won't judge me for not wearing socks (there are dozens of us!)
People want everyone to wear shoes because feet are gross. Ironically, feet become gross because of wearing shoes all the time. Imagine if you wore gloves every day from the time you wake up in the morning until the time you go to bed at night. Your hands would become grungy/sweaty/stinky. That is what happens to feet from continuously wearing shoes. The message from critics is "Feet are gross. So keep your shoes on and have them become even more gross."
Great channel! Maybe a bit unrelated, but I've just returned from a two hour walk utilising the forefoot strike for the first time. (Wearing barefoot shoes.) After a bit of adjusting (felt a little strange in the beginning) I registered a powerful resilient sensation in my posterior chain, like I could explode into running any minute. Also a great calm and grounded feeling filled my body. I was much more balanced than usual. What an amazing experience! It makes total sense that the heel is last point of contact, allowing the forefoot to 'search' the ground before applying weight - especially when walking barefoot. So smooth! Thank you so much for inspiring me to remedy the painful results of many years of disruptive walking patterns. Big greetings from Copenhagen!
Im glad to hear that! While many believe the primary driver for walking are the calves, the primary driver are the hips and when walking in a forefoot strike you will develop a greater sense of freedom to perform athletic maneuvers.
Yes, exactly - I found that in order to relax the foot before putting it down, I needed to lift my thigh, thus activating the hips much more than before - so I'm actually sprinting veryyyy sloooowwly ☺ And now my foot, ankle and calf are simultaneously driving but also to a great degree shock absorbers, together with my much more active glutes, protecting my troublesome lower back, which was in much better shape than normal after 120 minuttes of walking. Awesome! 🙏
I hope you start uploading videos again. I loved your video about supination (I have that when running) and hope you go deeper into it like the sartorius and such. Thanks for the great content.
I have touched many lives due to your videos ,sharing the knowledge regarding the importance of forefoot strike and minimalst footwear! Its a little cult ive started at work you can always tell because we all have NATURAL shoes,as opposed to "NORMAL".
So glad I discovered your youtube channel! I have ALWAYS hated wearing shoes, especially anything with a heel. As an adult, i have never worn shoes in the house or in my classroom as a middle school science teacher (now retired). As a result, my feet are in pretty good shape and I have made the transition to barefoot shoes pretty easily. But, I am still learneing many valuable lessons from this channel about the mechanics of walking as nature inteneded. Thanks so much for being there for my continuing education!
Hey man, nice to see a new video. I'm recently discovered your channel and have watched many of your older videos. I even plan to purchase some of your soap.
Amazing video. I really loved the cultural aspects of this. This provides a lot of great information to share with other humans, so that together we can increase awareness to how our culture harms our health and how we can change it to maximize our well-being!
This was a helluva breakdown! I got so many valuable takeaways. Some i knew, others I didn't. U were spot on about podiatrists recommending stiff soled shoes. But the ones I've been to recommend wide toe boxes, not narrow. U say stiff soles are no bueno tho 🤔 When they explain why, it makes sense. And when u explain it, it also makes sense. It's so confusing for me bc of the conflicting info. I dont like walking barefoot period. I always have something on my feet, even around the house. My go to is Adidas Adidalette Acua slides. They're wide, flat, with a molded footbed that gives me some arch support and some support under my toes. They feel fabulous, the most comfortable supportive shoe I own. I have bunions and no arches. Def have my moms feet. Genetics play a role for sure. Another reason I don't like being barefoot is i hate debris & hair getting on feet. It's like nails on a chalkboard lol. I like wearing socks bc my feet get cold and tend to be drier. Idk...ur explanations are so convincing and I believe the concepts. I just don't know if I cld adopt those changes full time. I may try being barefoot for a portion of my day n see how it goes. I dont wear heels anymore, or rarely since I started working from home 10 yrs ago. So that's definitely helped my feet tremendously!! I'm usually in my slides or sneakers. I rarely have sore feet anymore.
One of the pictures you used in the video is from Softstar Shoes. I have several of their shoes in wide width. They're my favorite. I also have Lems Primal Zen. My feet have always been called hobbit feet because my toes are widely spaced, and when I was younger, my shoes always developed protrusions where my 5th MTP joint would push against the sides. Before I got my first barefoot shoes with a wide toebox, I was buying run-of-the-mill shoes in wide widths and just assumed it was normal for my toes to be pushing against each other. I'm of Chinese descent, and it's normal in a lot of Asian cultures to take shoes off before going into the house. It's uncomfortable for me to wear shoes inside the house. When I was a kid, sometimes I would be smelling dog poop and find it on the bottom of my shoe, but luckily I would never track it into my house. I always think of that when I see people wear outdoor shoes in their homes.
As someone who has had a chronic compression tarsal arch injury for last 5 months, I've been struggling so much. And I got rid of most of my heels ( which I didn't wear much anyway)... still sucks
I've been trying to figure out how to start barefoot running but I don't have access to any kind of soft land so I'd be starting on concrete and pavement
Yup , misogyny never fades. Mostly it's been female fashion and feminist historians sharing this information, and they are awesome. It's nice to see a guys take
6:09 people love to argue this but their success in sports is IN SPITE OF the damage to their feet. I've heard people say if they were so detrimental you'd so more athletes with barefoot-wear, but in sport just like other parts of our hypercapitalist world money and tradition trump genuine innovation performance.
"Is there any difference [between foot binding and high heels]?" Well, yes. Families don't break the bones of their daughters' feet to achieve a cultural standard. No one is forced to wear high heels. Even if women do wear uncomfortable high heels and take them off at the end of the night, they _can take them off_ at the end of the night.
Don't let anyone judge you. Remember that you are the one who will enjoy the freedom of having strong and healthy feet, while they spend hundreds of dollars on orthotics and remain closed-minded. Embrace the future with barefoot shoes!
As a 58 yr old who has worn many types of shoes, I think shoes with form-fitting soles that are neither too rigid nor too soft work best. When there are little convexities for your heels+balls of feet, your foot slips much less inside the shoe so your toes are much less compressed. Wearing glove type shoes isn't great if you are doing a fast sport because your the toes can easily snag on things, also each person's toes are differently shaped.

Ugh. Turf toe. Got it from a workplace fall of all things four months ago. Been barefoot for sometime. I wonder if I spent more time with foot strengthening exercises if that might've been avoided. Was wearing steel toe boots with no insoles that where a little too big so my toes had space and I think my foot moved inside the boot with the ball of my foot planted as I tripped and fell. Really not fun
Of course there are very important & obvious differences between foot wrapping that wraps toes under the soles & wearing high heels. This doesn't mean wearing high heels for long periods can't harm the body, it can, but it is a much less severe practice. Walking on your toes as bound-footed women did/do is very debilitating and the process was highly painful & nearly/usually impossible to reverse.
How fascinating! I was not aware of the problems athletes have or the effects of athletic shoes like that! Hey I just found your channel and saw your video on curing your nut allergies and I want to do something similar. I’m just curious if you ate other nuts besides cashews only because I’m allergic to peanuts but not cashews. I’ve started out by directly smelling peanut butter so I can get used to the smell. I actually always hated the smell but now it doesn’t bother me. It’s interesting because it really is half a mental game
Thats exactly how I started..I accidently ate something with cashews (which I was allergic to, also.) But, i then started with the smell and then a super small (like the end of a toothpick) and progressed from there. I did it with benadryl on hand, just in case it went too far( it didn't for me).

Couldn't train properly for 5 month as nails coming off.. the 2 big toes still aren't right
The information you share in this video needs to go viral. This is no less serious than eating a proper diet over processed junk food. However, many people don't like the look of their toes open and spread out, preferring the look of closed toes like many in the west. 🫤
