I started running just under a year ago and in that time I have managed to go from a 30 minute 5k, to 25 minutes, I am running Manchester marathon and have a self designed 70 mile run from my childhood home to my current home for British Heart Foundation in June. I'm not going out for record times, I'm going to grind out the distances and prove to myself I can do it. Doing it to show that inner child who was sitting inside them all along.
Was great to have you with us last month! Glad we sorted out near perfect filming (and running!) conditions. Hopefully we'll see you a few more times in the lead up to TP100 and best of luck - with Centurion Running you'll be in great hands (doesn't make 100 miles any less though 🤣)
"My fitness is not where I want it to be..." is what I have said to myself after every other run past age 50. And then I gratefully reflect on the times that I couldn't run at all. You can run, just keep going! Love your work, James et al at TRC❤❤😊
Such a great motivation! "Use that as fuel" is so recognizable. I once had a manager who was a runner and when I said I ran half marathons before she said "Ow I assume that's a long time ago". I was depressed and was trying to eat that away. I left that job during covid. Lost 35 kilo's, found a way better job, cycled for 8k km's a year for the last few years and training again for a half marathon. Sometimes I wish to see that manager again, just to show her how much happier and fitter I am despise her comments.
James when you asked me what I'd like to see more of at the National Running Show, and I said more of the human stories and how your story resonated with my reasons for running. This is the video i wanted to see. Thank you ❤
Enjoy Your first 100 miles! Or at least try to as long as possible. I'm also awaiting for my first in the beginning of May. In fact, it's a strange format: 24 h race on foot, starting at one point, and ending 24 h later as far as possible from the start point, every participant can choose their on direction and path. Needless to say, there are no aid stations, I'm on my own, relying on shops and gas stations. My plan is to cover about 100 miles within 24 hours. And so far I have also finished some 100 km races. I'm excited, but also a bit scared. Scared of the unknown. I'm rooting for You!
When I first started running i couldn't imagine doing more than 4 miles. Three years later, i can comfortably complete 10 miles. Progress may not be linear at all times, but you'll move forward the more you go 🎉
I just started running again and I plan on one day trying to reach this goal. The struggle for me is learning to enjoy it and controlling my heart rate. Stay strong friend
James, I am so excited for you! Thank-you for allowing us to join you in your journey. I'm also doing my first 100 miler this year in October. Javelina 100 in Arizona, USA. This is my 4th year running and been slowly building mileage in the last couple years. I'm also terrified and nervous!
I love these videos; you’re such an inspiration to me 😊 I’ve been training for a half marathon in 2019 but caught covid 2 weeks before. Now I’m again training for another go at a half marathon and I hope to run a full one in the future!
Great stuff James! I'm doing my first 50 miler in April at the age of 61 so will be following your progress keenly! Good luck fella, you're an inspiration!!!
I especially like the films featuring James because he has accomplished so much, but is so humble and open about just how the different experiences affect him. Good on you, James!
You just made me laugh out loud at the period comment... classic! Re: PE teachers... the only time my PE teacher ever took an interest in me was when we tried hurdles, and he realised I could jump over things. But I was too slow running between the actual hurdles... so I was once again dismissed, because if you run slow, doesn't matter how good you are at jumping, you'll lose. I distinctly remember that initial hope that I wasn't a lost cause, and then the disappointment of being relegated back to the no-hopers. I didn't try running again until I was 37. I'm still slow, but I run on trails, so I enjoy myself now. Looking forward to seeing you smash 100 miles.
Great video James, love your positivity and pragmatism 💪🏻😅 100 milers are as much (if not more!) a mental as a physical challenge, as long as your mind is in the game and you believe in yourself you will absolutely smash it 🙌🏻
I'm so excited to go along for the ride as you train for your first 100 miler! I had big plans this year for many exciting running adventures, but I broke my ankle and now plans are on (temporary) hold. The moral of the story for me is - stop putting things off, assuming you can do them later. The future isn't guaranteed, so do all the fun adventures NOW!!
This channel repeatedly has some of the best content on RUclips for me. Educational at times. Entertaining at other times. And genuinely motivating and moving other times. Amazing stuff James!
I started running last July with a goal to do a 100 miler in the next 2 years. I’m 52, I’ve been an avid hiker the last couple of years but it will definitely be a stretch to get to 100 miles. First marathon last September, First 50k in October, first 100k planned for April. Battling through the niggles has been the biggest issue. I am doing 8-10 hours of time on feet (40-50 trail mails, 10,000 ft of elevation/wk). It is amazing what a positive mindset will get you. Best of luck on your journey.
James! You are truly an inspiration! Love your story! Love your journey! I amongst many many others, have no doubt that when you toe the line, you will complete the 100 and do it in amazing fashion! Crush the training and the race is the reward!!!
So much that's encouraging in this video, thank you. I've no ambition to run 100 miles, but then I said that about HM when I was still in C25k and achieved that in December thinking that was my limit. But you've got me thinking about a marathon now...
so inspiring and important that you share your story. I'm trying to make a running comeback and this was just what I needed to hear. Thankyou!! Your 100 mile dream will be a reality very soon!
“To hopefully share it with my daughter one day.” Hit me in the feels. My daughter is 4 and any time my wife asks if she can run a local race I say, “of course,” because my daughter loves watching and cheering her mama on.
As a parent I fully understand the difficulty of putting yourself first when it comes to training. My kids are in their 20s and I still feel guilty for spending time on me. It doesn’t get any easier. Good luck bud. I currently training for The Wall in June.
Good luck James. Great to see you efforts on screen. You have a great stories and your daughter will be proud of all your many achievements. Keep up the great work 👊🏻
I started running at 40 because somebody bet me I couldn't do a local trail race. 7 months on and I did do the race and now I'm training for my first 'Half' in May. I always hated running, but having a plan and targets have brought enjoyment into it and I'm so glad I started properly.
James you are great motivation, when you talked about the importance of stories last Monday it was the motivation to finally book my first ultra. TRC is a massive concentration of positivity and inspiration, along with a lot of realism and truth.
This channel has been so motivating and inspiring. James your story is amazing and the fuel of others telling you negative words to get you moving is truly incredible. I’m running my first full marathon in November and I know it’ll be very emotional and rewarding to myself. This channel and the podcast will continue to help me along my journey. Thank you all.
Absolutely loved this James, thank you so much! I was excluded from PE when in school as I have Beckers' Muscular Dystrophy. I gained a lot of weight and started to use a powered wheelchair about 7 years ago (21st) and now down to just under 15st having started running then. People telling me i can't or shouldn't do stuff just drives me more.. I've since done London Marathon and GNR amongst other running events. with GNR again this year and a place in London (although deferred to 2025). My plan in the next 18 months or so is to try and do an ultra marathon. Just need to find one with good cut offs.
Great video James. Good luck with the rest of your training. I am hoping to do the 70 mile wall ultra in June but have a foot injury currently so am crosstraining in a very frustrated manner! Great to meet you at the National running show last month. Looking forward to seeing more of your training
Wow. Your story is soo inspiring. Your kid is already proud of you but wow she is going to think youre a superhero once she understands! Congrats and enjoy the journey. 🎉
This time last year I weighed 16 plus stone and running was so far from my radar with a 5 month baby. It wasn't until I returned to work in March that I started training for a 1.65km relay race that I found running... after that I started saying I might do a half marathon, someone told me to be realistic and do a 5km. I am now 3 half marathons in and thanks to running channel I signed up to my first ultra in May... keep challenging everything!
Good luck James, i started running properly a year ago and really want to do the Thames valley path challenge. Im not one for speed (never feel like im not built for it) but i love the endurance of doing long distances. I'll hopefully folow in your footsteps soon 🏃♀️
Hi James- I have a 1.5 yr old (Who comes on runs with me in her pram) and a 2week old- I can sympathise with it being hard to get out sometimes but hey- I reckon I could run half the night - so that’s a plus. If you’re ever in Straya- let’s go for a pram run.
A 100 mile ultra is definitely on my bucket list, right after a sub-4-hour Marathon, and then a 50 miler. Great video, my fitness isn't where I want it to be, and like yourself, I've a 2 and half year old little boy who I hate leaving to go for a run but also feel guilty for leaving my other half looking after him while I go out, I'm currently training for endure24 and have the excuse that the dog needs to go out but it doesn't make it any less guilt free, keep it up 👊
I would love to see more insights into James's training. Not really into ultra-distances but I'm curious about training volume and intensity for such an event. Greetings from Bremen (Germany)
Good luck James! I’m also taking part in the Thames Path Challenge this year - just the 100km as opposed to 100 miles though haha - will be my first one. Good for you on always pushing yourself - inspirational stuff!
wow, TP100 was mentally one of the hardest 100s I have done - UTMB kept me going with variety and on SDW it was great to see how far you had run along the ridges. Would love to hear what tricks you have to keep the variety & motivation up. All the best of luck 💪
@@runningchannel I couldn’t run for a week after that, but then got back into training and decided to focus on completing 100 half marathons in 10 years. With that goal achieved, now I’m trying to figure out what the next running goal should be…
39 marathons 😨😨 that’s incredible! !! I’ve never done even 1 😁…although I do exercise and run 20 milers consistently….may eventually do a 50 miler some day (no marathons) and perhaps a 100 to follow it…will see…
Just here looking for inspiration and motivation as I'm on my own "first 100 miler" journey, except I've chosen to do a less flat one (Pennine Journey North - 112 miles and 4,300m elevation) and now wondering the wisdom of that 😂 Good luck James, I'll be checking back often for encouragement and tips 😉😎
@@runningchannel didn't get off to the best of starts in the new year with a nasty flu bug but since then it's ramping up to the point where it makes me realise I need a lot more hills in my legs and a lot more "time on feet" but it's going well right now. That said, any edge I can gain from others is invaluable 😉
its an amazing race. you'll love it! But actually the fact it is so flat is a bad thing for us runners... its mean less walking breaks, body gets used to moving on flat surfaces and uses certain muscles more... but it is totally doable!
Cheering you on, James! I'm training for my first ultra (52km), and have also recently done a training race. One feels safer when the organisers make sure I check in. Do you train to carry all your kit or do you train with a lighter load?
Longest I ever did was 100k, and I swore I wouldn’t ever try to go further than that. I couldn’t walk for a few weeks after that. I was 45 then, I’m currently 47. I’m sticking to marathon/50k/50 mile distances only! 🤣
Make sure byou eat PROPER FOOD. Don't relay on gels and stuff like that. I had a craic with Joss Naylor about this once and he said "I needed some tattie pot". Unfortunately this was after crashing out of the Lakeland 100 very near the end. Anyway good luck.

@@runningchannel I couldn’t run for a week after that, but then got back into training and decided to focus on completing 100 half marathons in 10 years. With that goal achieved, now I’m trying to figure out what the next running goal should be…
You got this! We believe in you.
Fair play to ya James, you are an inspiration to others . 👍👍
So curious about your further progress, keep going! You will succeed.
Thanks so much Karen!
Great video James and very best of luck.
39 marathons 😨😨 that’s incredible! !!
I’ve never done even 1 😁…although I do exercise and run 20 milers consistently….may eventually do a 50 miler some day (no marathons) and perhaps a 100 to follow it…will see…
This is really well timed for me as I've just set my heart on a 24 hour race... Won't do it for a couple years but any more info helps...
Good luck James! You can do this!
Done it running loops around the lake in Victoria Park Belfast last June.167km
Just here looking for inspiration and motivation as I'm on my own "first 100 miler" journey, except I've chosen to do a less flat one (Pennine Journey North - 112 miles and 4,300m elevation) and now wondering the wisdom of that 😂 Good luck James, I'll be checking back often for encouragement and tips 😉😎
Good luck!! How are you finding the training?
@@runningchannel didn't get off to the best of starts in the new year with a nasty flu bug but since then it's ramping up to the point where it makes me realise I need a lot more hills in my legs and a lot more "time on feet" but it's going well right now. That said, any edge I can gain from others is invaluable 😉
A true inspiration ❤
We agree 💙
"Come on, Barbie, let's go party." Yes, yes, this man has a daughter (and lived through the Aqua era).
😂
You got this. Hopefully I can run my first 100k this year. One day a small pipe dream. Maybe do 100 mile run.
You can do it Janet! 💪
@@runningchannel thankyou
You're a legend James
its an amazing race. you'll love it! But actually the fact it is so flat is a bad thing for us runners... its mean less walking breaks, body gets used to moving on flat surfaces and uses certain muscles more... but it is totally doable!
Not what he wants to hear 😂😅
Great video 🎉. Keep it up👍🏃🏻♂️💪🙏
Thank you 🙌
Cheering you on, James! I'm training for my first ultra (52km), and have also recently done a training race. One feels safer when the organisers make sure I check in. Do you train to carry all your kit or do you train with a lighter load?
You got this!!!
Thank you!
Very inspiring. 100 miles / 160 km is an unreal distance. I’d love to try and do it someday.
Longest I ever did was 100k, and I swore I wouldn’t ever try to go further than that. I couldn’t walk for a few weeks after that. I was 45 then, I’m currently 47. I’m sticking to marathon/50k/50 mile distances only! 🤣
You're an inspiration!
Thanks Simon 😁
I want to see James training for the IRONMAN. He has the necessary building blocks.
Good luck James, I’m also training for 100 miles right now ( race is June ) where can I follow your progress further?
In order to complete a 100mile race you should be able to run roughly 15h/week for a period of 3 months prior to the race.
Is that a plan you've followed?
Good luck james 😊
Make sure byou eat PROPER FOOD. Don't relay on gels and stuff like that. I had a craic with Joss Naylor about this once and he said "I needed some tattie pot". Unfortunately this was after crashing out of the Lakeland 100 very near the end. Anyway good luck.
So true Mark! Have you got any ultras this year?
