Any dangerous stunt carried out by the actor himself is a great promotion material. Hollywood should learn how to use behind-the-scene footage of stunts (actually done by the actor) to promote movies.

Cat Dog he probably produced most of his movies. So, he would have still been extremely well paid even if he hadn't done all of the stunts himself. Another example is Jackie Chan who used to do life-threatening stunts himself back in the days when technology was still inadequate and now he produces his own movies and is very wealthy.
He gets percentage on top of his pay. So when his movies earn more, he earns more.

Let's not forget that Jackie Chan used to do his own stunts when security was much lower than now ! I'm pretty sure Tom Cruise actually talked about this in one interview - how he's inspired by Buster Keaton and Jackie Chan but works in a much safer environment thanks to his stunt team and big budgets.
