It's a shame since this was basically the West's first animated movie adaptation of the monkey king mythos and it didn't really bring anything new or exciting to the table, especially compared to the animated monkey king adaptations done by China itself
About the Moana comparison this movie is also similar to Disney’s Hercules which funny enough is the same directing team that did Moana. That film is also about a demigod trying to gain immortality by killing a bunch of monsters who meets a girl who is secretly working for the bad guy who is unhappy with his current status and wants to take over the world who has to deal with two incompetent sidekicks. Of course that movie works because Hercules is actually likable.
I really hated Monkey king, easily a film I never want to go back to ever!!! Considering it was directed by Anthony Stacchi who helmed open season 1, it featured the same problems and all. 😒😒😒
The monkey king could've been better there's potential here and the animation great but the writing holds this film back from being a great movie. A highlight is the cast which features a all Asian cast and they do their best with the material given to them as the writers I'm wondering if they ever went to writing class at all. Hopefully the rest of the year is better. 🎥 🎨 🇨🇳 🐵 👑

The film's visuals and score is good, but it needed a better story. The final result didn't do any favors 😤😤😤
I hate how fast the pacing in the start of the movie was. It all felt very overwhelming and unexplained.

Are we not gonna talk about how the dragon king dead ass looks like sisu from raya. For god sake both characters are heavily connected to water
5:39 although DreamWorks made Boss Baby and Trolls but that movie is just as if not even more stupid
There's one more thing the words I'm going to subscribe to say Nostalgia is the worst of the worst of anniversaries?!
Superb review for, in my opinion, the most disappointing animated film of this year. This really should have been a lot better than it ended up being.
