      W and S the questions Levy was asking at that point were purely about character. Objections could have been made by the DA before Levy anyway. But your missing the main point....who the judge was and what the charge was...it was the man who killed a state’s witness in front of the very judge who oversaw the states witness case. He wasn’t going to give Levy ANY love so it made ZERO difference. Remember Levy looked to the judge and he just shrugged his shoulders at him. Levy LOVED him some Omar haha

    I always thought Chris was way scarier than Snoop.

    • @freaknr1
      @freaknr1 8 лет назад +59

      I agree. Snoop is a loose canon, someone who dosen't think things through and wouldn't mind putting a bullet between your eyes if you wronged her, which seems scarier. But Chris is a pro, doing horrible things, but always with a distant look in his eyes. It's strongly hinted at him being a former solider, which would explain his professionalism. He would hunt you down, and he would do it well. The one time he cracks, he beats a child-molester to death with his bear hands, showing how much damage he could do if he ever lost control. So yeah, Snoop may appear scarier at first glance, but Chris is the real danger.

      While yes, it's true, the city of Baltimore is in a way the main character, cause that's what the show is about, there is no denieing that Jimmy is the traditional MC. (When the actor had time) he was the center of the main plot threads, he is the focus of the first and last scene of the show, Dominik West is the only actor who isn't listed alphabetically in the opening, but he's first and so on...

      This show is among the top 3 best shows of all of time. It's four seasons of fantastic storytelling with seasons 3 & 4 being two of the best seasons of television in history. It was on pace to become the greatest show of all time. Then...…..season 5 came and completely shit the bed. I get they were going for a deep meta observation of the news and sensationalism, but they completely overthought themselves. It went against everything you had built up to that point and sticks out horribly. The season finale was good, but it just left a bitter taste in my mouth after the disappointing season. I liked Bunny Colvin because he was REAL police (like McNulty and Freemon and the Major Crimes group). He wasn't afraid to actually try something DIFFERENT. The interesting thing is, we actually meet Colvin in season 2, and learn his motivations for legalizing drugs. A little boy is shot and killed during Boadie's gunfight, and Colvin arrives on the scene, visibly shaken, telling his fellow officers how their approach to the "game" is bullshit and gets them nowhere. Look at all the good that came from "Hampsterdam". If you re-watch season 3 you really do see that in the end, Colvin did a lot more good than harm by legalizing drugs in a certain "zone".

    The Wire is a difficult show to really get into. I'm at episode ten, and I'm really starting to understand why people love this show so much. It's very realistic, it just feels so real, and the characters are getting really interesting. Breaking Bad is still my favorite show, but I don't find it impossible that The Wire could possibly dethrone it. It's a really mature show, and it demands a mature, patient audience. Don't give up!

  • @MadBunnyRabbit
    @MadBunnyRabbit 11 лет назад +53

    Saying that it is cops versus drug dealers is so undersalling the show. It's so much more. There's family and bureaucracy. There's complex morality on both sides. Characters (emphesis on plural) actually evolve durning the show, not like in some other shows (BB).
    I would say that The Wire is Godfather of tv shows. Masterfully writen and executed.

    • @OmarZing
      @OmarZing 11 лет назад +10

      Fuck off, did you SEE Walter,Jesse, Skylar evolve?! But other than that I agree. Use Game Of Thrones next time for that particular comparison

    • @MadBunnyRabbit
      @MadBunnyRabbit 11 лет назад

      Sure they had their hardships to which they reacted differently, but for character arc to take place given character has to be different from when he/she started.
      Jesse still thouth he's better than Walt. Skylar was still bossing him around. The circumstances changed, but not their mentality.
      Take Han. Started out as a scumbag that's interested only in cash, ended up as a rebel. That's evolution.
      Not: "walt, master card is the one we don't use" to "you have only 5 min". Where's the change? Both of them accted acordingly to how they were presented in the first episodes.
      As for Walt, he's charm neve laid in evolution but ambiguity and because of that you can't say he changed, which writers forgot about with him admiting he cooked because he liked it, although that was pretty aparent early on anyway.
      It's a fucking shame that such well writen character ended up with such pathetic supporting characters.

      MadBunnyRabbit If you seriously think that Walter White never evolved, try really hard to convince me that Walter White from the Pilot would do the same things that Walter White from Season 5 did.

    • @MadBunnyRabbit
      @MadBunnyRabbit 10 лет назад +1

      HoakyHenry Well, what Walter from season 5 did? He didn't hire assassins, he rescued Jessie, apologised to Skyler and was pretty beat up by Hanks death, also he revealed his bureal place. Not to mention that he left a considerable amount of cash for his family, which was soppoused to be the plan all along.
      You see, the problem is that him becoming more ruthles isn't evolution. In the pilot when fire trucks were going to the fire, he at first aimed twords the road. That was his FIRST instinct. Not to mention, that in the pilot he scored his first kill and he actualy hopped for double kill, because he knew what he was doing.
      The great thing about Walters character is the ambiguity of Heisenbergs persona. A lot of people I talked with claimed he's turning more and more into him as the show goes. But that's not true. Sure you can interprete it that way, but you can just as well, in every situation there was in the series (maybe with the exception of 'get out of my territory'), say he was doing it for good reason. If he didn't let the heroin chick die, they would both kill themself before they got a chance to spend the money. With the kid situation? Sure it was extream, but that was the best he could figure out to stay alive (just like in the pilot). Also keep in mind that he's not stupid, he knew what he was doing. Mike? A reasonable decision. Eventualy someone would rat out and Mike wouldn't just be ok with his friends dead.
      Again, the only thing that realy changed (and not that deep into the series) is that he became more ruthles. Having that in mind, he still didn't want to kill Hank, he would rather go to jail, the only freaking time he actually would rather go to jail.
      All that, those were just brief moments in a fairly long series. You have a lot of family fudes (especialy with Skyler) where his aproche bearly changed.
      So yeah, I don't see there much of a character ark.
      Not like in The Wire. A lot of people there changed their atitude, twords work, even twords gangsters and life. While poor chemistry teacher killed his first victime in a despreat atempt to save his life in a pilot and you are saying me that doing a masacre of some hired guns at the end of the season is somehow different? More brutal, sure, but mentaly, nothing changed.
      Although I must say, his admiting that he liked being someone was a nice atempt to snick in some self realisation, but it felt realy forced and out of place and yet again he comforted to Skyler opinion and was apologetic about it, just like in the pilot.
      Honestly, I don't expect you to change your mind, but I have to ask you one very important question. How many regular people, would actually refuse a good job with health benifits and decide too cook meth? Hm? Think about that. That adrenaline rush going with it, it was all about that from the begining, he wanted that, because if he wanted a good treatment and some cash for family, he could have just as well accept the job.

    • @HolyMackerel490
      @HolyMackerel490 10 лет назад +1

      MadBunnyRabbit Actually, what you just said is what makes Walter White's character development so great. He had been inwardly suppressing Heisenberg all his life, but as the show progresses, he allows it to take over. Even though he always had it in him, he still changed because of the fact that he was letting the Heisenberg part of him to take over outwardly. His ruthlessness wasn't the part of him that he let out. It was a combination of his ego, ambition, and taking chances, whether they would harm him, or were immoral.
      It's really fascinating watching this kind of person. He's a person who hadn't had enough thrill in life, but had slowly been building up his resentment and rage at having been ignored for his talents, and he took the chance to change all that.
      When he's talking to Skyler in the finale, this certain line he says fully captures this evolution: "I did it for myself. I liked it. I was good at it. I was alive."
      I don't think I'll change your mind either, and I'm not really trying to either, but I hope you take it into account.

    I would say the series is less about the war on drugs, but about Baltimore and how it is fundamentally corrupt in all of it's institutions. Wether it be the top brass in it's law enforcement, the unions, the mayor's office, the schools, or the local media, each season shows a different aspect of what makes Baltimore such a mess. Yes the drug dealers are the core issue but it is these failing institutions that allow the problem to continue. Tommy Carcetti is a perfect example of what the show is trying to show us. We are shown Carcetti to be a glimmer of light and hope in season 4 is corrupted over time and allows Baltimore to turn him into just another politician trying to seek more power. Each season is a masterpiece. Season 4 specifically is perfect. Watching a group of middle school boys turn from care free children and mostly end up as broken people was heartbreaking. Season 5 is heavily criticized but I believe that criticism is not earned. Yes the show sort of jumps the shark in the fifth season but it shows the characters we grew to love pass the torch to the next generation and gives us closure. If you have not watched the Wire then watch it now, it is the perfect television show and it's new HD release is aging like fine wine.

      I know I'm replying to a 6 year old comment (😅), but to be fair, BB & 'The Wire' are both great television landmarks, but operate under different motifs & formulas. Personally, I still prefer 'Breaking Bad' because post season 1, it was almost as if *every* episode was explosive in one way or another whilst laying the foundation down for future eps.

      ***** alot of them movies are not very current. There is a reason however that tv has improved so dramatically and that's because the people who where writing movies have shifted to tv. Personally I think it's arcing storyline, episodic tv is almost gone out of fashion. The best way to engage people is to invest them in a concept or idea and then drip feed them and cliffhanger hanger them and tie it off in a little bow at the end. Characters are more iconic than shows now, emotional manipulation with a sympathic characters or admiration with strong characters. The more phycology they employ in tv the better it will get. It'll dumb down again, all media's have a peak of creativity and a lull, be it literature, movie, tv, theatre or even video games. The key to staying sharp is all in the psychology, keeping as many people as you can invested. As conflict, if you can get your audience to bicker on a plot line or character, an us v them attitude. Story telling is basically manipulation of the emotional state of the viewer or reader.
      I think I babbled long enough. :)

      halochampion342 Comparison can be easily made, Breaking Bad is a fake show written by people who know nothing about the drug game whatsoever. It's great but it's a fantasy. The Wire on the other hand is brutally realistic, beautifully written, perfectly acted and marvelously shot. If you don't agree I would argue that you completely misunderstood The Wire.

    • @halochampion342
      @halochampion342 8 лет назад

      Breaking Bad isnt about the drug trade, its about the complexities of human morality. Just because it has drugs in it does not mean that the main point of the show. And The Wire was "perfectly acted"? Even you know thats not true it had its fair share of weak performances while Breaking Bad has the likes of Bryan Cranston and Giancarlo Esposito. I understand that the wire is an analysis of modern society, I also understand that Breaking Bad is not, sure it has elements of that but it was never meant to be an in depth look like The Wire. Breaking Bad is purely a morality tale and a brilliant one to. There are really no similarities between them because they are trying to accomplish different things, if you think that just because they both have drugs means that they are comparable than it is clear that you never truly understood either show

Every plot line is so tight, even that weird season 2, every character is fleshed out and real. The bullshit of being police is actually addressed, not just the day to day shit but how hard it is for the career cops to give up being cops. How hard it is for the people in the drug trade to leave it, and the ways that they try to do it--and what I appreciate the most about that is they take time to show certain characters having personal crises about their involvement in that world. I'm so glad you reviewed this, I might never have watched it otherwise!

      The majority of that statement is spot on, but the sopranos probably has the edge over it as best drama due to its revolutionary influence

      +Aj Koorstra Not really, because it's important to know where the drugs come in from overseas and how they get to the dealers.

      Not out of place, but a little off in a tangent. It shows you that there are people other than just poor black folks dealing drugs.

    • @StudioMod
      @StudioMod 6 лет назад

      A huge tangent, that would have been forgivable if the show didn't just completely undermine it by going right back to season 1 characters and style for the entire rest of the show. It was out of place because they literally gave it no place, they disrespected the season due to ratings and it felt disrespected and out of place after that. You can't hide that in writing, even if you try. The real world fucks up art sometimes.

      Season two was my favorite season. I felt a tremendous empathy for these working guys getting screwed at every turn, trying to get out of their hopeless situation by 'breaking bad', and winding up dead or in prison. And the gang of eastern Europeans lead by 'The Greek' was such an interesting adversary.

    Breaking Bad The Wire and Dragon Ball Z

  • @Mattyf401
    @Mattyf401 5 дней назад

    I just watched the wire for the first time. One of my best friends who passed away years ago I’m in the show was still being aired on TV. He used to talk about how good it was and maybe want to watch it. Sopranos and the wire are my two favorites.

  • @TheNuyorker
    @TheNuyorker 7 лет назад +1

    Omar, Weebay, Stringer and Bodie were my favorite characters. I was angry when Omar died but I literally teared up when Bodie died. But Snoop was THE best death not even an ounce of fear, she went out like a champ.
    Snoop: "How's my hair?"
    Michael : " You look good girl"

  • @borgtennis

    The Wire is awesome. And yes Snoop is scary. In the opening theme season 4 you see her sitting alone in a park at night on a swing and she looks freaky. Omar is awesome!

    Should have mentioned the fact that some of the cops on the show were actual B-More cops..like 'Jay Landsman', who was played by Jay Landsman.

    • @gladeskier95
      @gladeskier95 8 лет назад +6

      Actually Jay Landsman the cop played Lieutenant Mello (the mustache dude who was Bunny Colvin's second in command). Jay in the show was played by Delaney Williams

    So Jeremy which character is the one that gets Boba Fetted; Wallace? D'Angelo? Stringer? Bodie? Prop Joe? Frank Sobotka?

    • @alfino116
      @alfino116 9 лет назад +6

      Christopher Navarro I presume Omar?

    • @markabbott8381
      @markabbott8381 9 лет назад +1

      Christopher Navarro I would say Omar, I was pissed how he went out but it made sense. Stringer too but that was actually a pretty cool lead up in the building chase.

    • @chriskjo1611
      @chriskjo1611 9 лет назад +5

      Well I agree that Omar got Boba Fetted, although he did make it the end of season 5. Stringer Bell had it coming; the betrayal of Brother Mouzone, his double dealing with Omar, and the producer David Simon said in an interview that Stringer had to go since he was trying to reform "the game". The most tragic death in my opinion was Boadie Broadus' demise, his passing was also heroic for he tried to fight his way out and went out like a warrior.

    • @nathanonlyy5649
      @nathanonlyy5649 9 лет назад

      Omar got Boba Fetted because there wasn't any closure or reason for his death, it just happened and it kinda pissed a lot of us off because we would have rather seen him get killed in a justifable or reasonable way. But like Jeremy said, we expected it to happen and it doesn't piss us off completely but we still don't like the fact that it happened. Stringer had to go, he was a dick & Wallace wasn't a significant or important character, plus he snitched so that was a reason for him to die. Only ones that got Boba Fetted in my opinion were Omar & De'Angelo.

    • @chriskjo1611
      @chriskjo1611 9 лет назад +1

      My vote for Boba Fett goes with Boadie Broadus because he was loyal to 'the game'. Omar had death coming either way, those who rob drug dealers are bound to make fearsome enemies. Aforesaid enemies that sooner rather than later will successfully kill him (Omar).

    Got all 5 seasons, Mr. Jahns, and "The Wire" is everything you say. Agree about Season 2 being slightly out of step with the rest of the show, but I still count that one as my favorite of the run.
    You might interested to know that there WAS a cops and robbers show that showed things from both perspectives in the 1980s called "Crime Story". The late Dennis Farina got his start on television with that show and not just him. The guest star list included pre-fame David Caruso, Christian Slater, Julia Roberts, and Kevin Spacey. Check it out some time if you can.

    Jeremy I'm so glad you did a review The Wire! I just finished it and was gonna recommend you watch it. So glad you already have. I found it interesting that by the 2nd season there is no soundtrack. Which makes the show even more realistic. I don't have a big enough ego to say what's the best show ever put on TV but The Wire is definitely one of them.

    I never really liked cop shows like Law and Order and NCIS,CSI, and all those things. But this show is fantastic; pretty much what cop shows should be i.e. not just a bunch of boring perfect cops doing what needs to be done to boring criminals in what is almost always the same story every week. Too bad not many people know or care about the show.

    so many times people say that they watch the first season and dont understand whats so good about it. The beauty of the show is as you go on, everything ties in to one another, and by the time you hit the end, every season plays so nicely together you dont even judge the show by one episode or one season. "All the pieces matter."
