The Hot Wax is a dual overdrive unit, featuring the classic Hot Tubes overdrive and the Crayon. The Hot Tubes is a transparent overdrive/booster capable of producing those huge overdrive tones similar to the old Colorsound Power Boost David Gilmour used in the early and mid 70s.
The Crayon is a slightly more modern full range overdrive, similar to the BK Butler/Chandler Tube Driver and Boss BD-2, with lots of headroom and tube-like compression and dynamics.
I found this looking up Hot Wax pedal demos, though I'm not specifically looking for Gilmour's sound. I must say, this may be the best demo I've found for this pedal! I'm impressed by its versatility! Excellent job!
Thanks! Very versatile pedal.
Hi Bjorn, I liked your review so much that I swapped my EHX Crayon for a Hot Wax and I'm very happy with it, especially when I stacked it with my EHX Ram's Head Big Muff Reissue. Using the Hot Tubes side, I was able to get the tones you'd get by placing a PowerBoost/Overdriver after a Ram's Head. I also enjoyed hearing the tone produced by having both sides of the Hot Wax on which sounded like a cranked tube preamp. I don't know if you could try these combinations, but they were quite a pleasure for my ears. So, I'd like to thank you for this helpful and serious work of reviewing gear.
Best regards from France.
I watched this video several times. I bought one off Reverb. Just got it today. I have both the Crayon and Hot Tubes but its the blend that does the trick. Pairing them into a dual overdrive was a good thing. Add a 1/4 note analog delay and some hall reverb and travel to another dimension. Thanks man.
Are u able to achieve some of those Gilmour tones with the ehx hotwax?
I recently bought this pedal. Friends, this is the best thing that has happened to me in the world of overdrive. It can do anything. Thanks to the creators. If you want to immerse yourself in the world of drive 60-70's, then take it without even thinking!
Hi Bjorn. Today the Hot wax has just arrived. I wanted to thank you, a beautiful pedal, fantastic sound. On my hot rod de luxe III it sounds great. Recommended! Thanks again!
I was searching for an overdrive on reverb ,and I did not find a demo ,so I went to RUclips and found yours
Now I think that I will buy this one
Thanks and cheers from Algeria
You might want to check out the "Dark Side " stomp box it has increadable capabilities.
Ahh! Wanted that Time solo so bad! Really love the tone and Shine On jam. That was awesome Bjorn.
Thanks!
Bjorn how do you think the hot tubes i would be at boosting a Rams Head type muff
Yet again.... It’s your fault :) I ordered the hot wax yesterday. Over the years I’ve bought ehx triangle muff, wren and cuff box of war, musket fuzz, bk butler tube driver, iron bell, boss rt20, mxr script phase 90, hoof fuzz, byoc large beaver (i put it together), deluxe electric mistress, elec lady. D Allen Echoes Pickups are in my black strat... Thank you for all of your awesome gear reviews and tone tutorials on youtube and on Gilmourish.com . Got all your albums too. You’ve definitely helped me on my tone quest Thank you sir!!!
Thanks for the kind words!
Very beautiful overdrive :)
I am using BOSS-GT001. However, it is very difficult to reproduce "DAVID GILMOUR" SOUND :(
Your performance is always "DAVID GILMOR" itself. I will study a lot :)
I expect not only the introduction of effectors, but also commentary on techniques♪
Thank you so much.

Thank you!

First step in getting Gilmour tone:
1)Go to the trash can
2)Insert Roland GT1000
3)Drop into receptacle
4)Buy Muff Fuzz
5)Enjoy

Watch this video
Listen to what he did with only two real boss pedals. Start small, build up your sounds. Learn everything you can from the site gilmourish.com, then learn how to feel out what you're capable of. That GT1000 surely has it's uses, but it's definitely going to disappoint as an "all in one" gilmour tool box. Read the other tutorials too, not just the gear specific reviews. It will help you find a better sound for yourself as well! Good luck 😁
Dear DB Jackson
Thank you for a wonderful advice
Burst out laugh:)
That shine on jam so amazing.
Video nicely done. I really like this pedal. The Hot Tubes driving a fuzz makes for an incredible doom metal tone.
What a beautiful playing SOYCD, very similar to David
Great. Just what I need. Another pedal, lol. Thanks for the review. I've had my eye on this one for a bit. Now to make room on the board (and power supply) for it.
Before this video I've only wanted this pedal, now I need it!
It’s really funny because I wanted to get that Shine Pink Floyd sound and read that he was using BK 911 I little to much expensive so I found hot tube and then hot wax and then your demo of the hot wax playing the exact same sound I was after. Now I know what to buy thanks man great video !!!
Great tones Bjørn. The Hot Tubes sounds amazing. 🎸🎶🔊
Thanks! Yes, I'm really loving it! The bonus with this Hot Wax compared to the Nano Hot Tubes is that the HW has bass and treble controls, while the sinle nano only has a tone control. Makes all the difference towards the Power Boost tones.
@@gilmourishofficial hi bjorn. What pedal did you turn on at the very end? Was it the right side of hot wax or somethibg else?
Bjorn uploaded again am I dreaming still nice playing as always :)
Great Video and playing. Seen you guys (Airbag and Oak) in Oslo in Feb24 the sound was just amazing. I say you are right upthere with Gilmour. Just fantastic to hear❤
Personally I have after 30 years with just basic cords on an acoustic, recently picked up the electric guitar and, although gear should not replace basic skills, it is fun and rewarding to get som fatter sounds:)
Thanks- I have just a starter amp (Boss Katana 50 mkii) so i will see how my gears develops, reading on your site I understand the combos are important, so lets see…
Rock on and your teaser Airbag song on the concert was great- can’t wait for the release🎵🎼🎤
Tusen takk for veldig hyggelig kommentar!
Thanks for doing this and, as they say..... The sound is in your hands.
Thank you!
Picked one up for like $70 on reverb a while back. Favorite pedal. Works well on bass. I prefer it to my tech21 lol
Sounds amazing to me!
You make any pedal sound like Gilmour. Why not trying a Metal Zone? ))
Well...
@@gilmourishofficial DO IT! I can mod one to "diezel-zone" specs and send it your way. The Diezel mod greatly improves its usability.
The MT2 on my Boss MS3 does some great Division Bell era lead sounds
DO EEET!
You and Ola could send pedals back and forth.
'Does it Floyd?'
Tbh fam a lot of 'metal' pedals dialed in right would probably fo the job. You're why we know the HM2 is a Gilmour box.
Hell a Triple Wreck on vintage with the mids cranked...isn't the onboard boost 'fuzzy'?
The Metal Zone actually sound pretty damn good on bass. At least in a mix, but I wouldn't even put one of them in my guitar case.
If you're in the market for a high quality, versatile, noticeable overdrive, get this pedal. Incredible dynamic range that allows you to use almost any guitar to fit into a variety of different styles and genres. My good friends and fellow musicians noticed a huge improvement in my tone once I added this to my board. Absolutely destroys the tube screamer I was using before I started running this gem. Does an incredible job at enhancing both your clean and distorted amp channels.
50% of the magic is your awesome playing it seems...

Excellent review, as always!
Thank you!
Sounds absolutely amazing.
Great review and lovely sounds
Thanks!
I think Bjorn could make a can of tomato soup sound like David Gilmour.😁
Damn.... That sounds so great. You can tell you really listen to yourself play and you speak through those fingers. Nice video. I'm sure you make any pedal sound great!
Thanks for the kind words!
Your strat is awesome looking
wow - sounds great
On my wish list for sure 👍
Pretty genius calling it hot wax considering the two pedals it comes from
Hi Bjorn, Excellent Demo, Nice Pedal, but is it The One. Mr Gilmour used so many different Pedals into a HiWatt I just don't know anymore .
I met David Gilmours Amp Tech, an English man, Mr Jim Mc Leod, it was during the Delicate Sound of Thunder Tour, he Lived here in Melbourne who said when I was looking for that Gilmour Tone first you need a HiWatt Amp and a Tube Driver Pedal, then Learn his Technique!
He then started playing a Red MIJ Squire through an Amp running through a 4x15 Yamaha Cab and it was like standing in front of Mr Gilmour !
A moment I will treasure always!
If you could only have one Distortion/Overdrive Pedal what would You choose?
Thank you for all the work that you do for us Gilmour fans, I am truly Greatful!
Take care♥️👍🎸.
Melbourne, Australia.
Thanks for the kind words! David obviously never used the Hot Wax, nor the two pedals featured in it but this is the only pedal - that I know of - that combines the sonic qualities of both the Tube Driver and Power Boost that’s been staples in David’s setup since the early 70s. And it’s cheap and widely available. That was my point with the review.
There are a lot of very absolute opinions out there on how to achieve David’s tones and while a Hiwatt and Tube Driver will get you close, it doesn’t really matter if you don’t know how to set them up and how to incorporate his techniques into that.
I guess my pedal would be a Boss BD2. It can do pretty much anything and it’s easy to make sound great regardless of what guitar and amp you’re using.
Was curious about this one . I have the crayon but may add this to my wish list .
i love this pedal. can get similar tones to Big Muff pedal on Hot Tubes side. with both side engaged might please most metal fans
Amazing tone my friend - great playing 🎸
Thank you!
excellent vid great playing
Thank you!
Very very nice. I've been having this pedal on my wishlist for a while...I couldn't make my mind between this and the Crayon...
But now I see that the Hot Tubes side is worth a try.
Thanks.
The bonus with this Hot Wax compared to the Nano Hot Tubes is that the HW has bass and treble controls, while the sinle nano only has a tone control. Makes all the difference towards the Power Boost tones.
@@gilmourishofficial you're right, that's why I had considered the Crayon, but not the Hot Tubes :)
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. 🎸
Thank you!
Beautiful text Bjorn ... for the credibility of your posts I bought the crayon 76 and I intend to add a Muff to the pedals ... I am in doubt between the EHX Green Muff, EHX Triangle Muff or Rams Head (Vick audio). In these configurations crayon76 + Muff what is the best amplifier for DG tones?
Thank you...
and happy New Year!
Thanks! You'll find reviews of both the Green and Triangle on my channel. See this feature on my site for some amp tips www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=1344
Love those have a cigar licks you did. Holy shit
Do you think you could make a video of David's tone on No More Lonely Nights by Paul McCartney ?
Hi Bjorn, I was wondering if you could check out the Honey Pot from TC Electronic. It's a Big Muff clone, and I'm thinking about getting one, but can't find any demos with any "Gilmourish" elements to them.
Thanks!
Did you ever try it out? I’ve got the rusty fuzz from tc and I’m wondering if the honey pot was more for me
I don't think I heard them stacked. Have you ever tried to stack OCD into a colorsound power booster? I just tried it with my new power booster clone, and wohha mama, is it wild. Especially with humbuckers. I thought it might get muddy, but with the right blend of volume and gain, it sounds pretty killer. I know the OCD already has a fair amount of midrange and compression, but the power booster gives it way more harmonics, and response. Fun stuff.
I need to try that!
I use this pedal to tame an English Muff'n that is too much, so I roll the Muff down and run it to this. I wanted to stack Tube Screamers and since I saw this pedal but passed it by in the shop time and time again, I thought I'd research it and see. Glad I did, because I also run a TS9 after it and use the Hot Wax and the TS together, going from Crayon to Hot Tubes just to get diff tones. I hit the Muff before it with the output barely on and it is incredible. I want to add a compressor pedal to this setup to see how it sounds. I throw in a vibe as well with delay and yeah, it's pretty Gilmourish, all on a Les Paul
Always enjoy it brother.....I'm wanting a stratocaster but I haven't heard it being able to get a good overdrive sound.....it scares me that it struggles with overdrive.....always enjoy what your layin down
I guess that depends on what type of overdrive sounds you want. A Stratocaster can easily produce awesome overdrives with the right pedal and/or amp.
@@gilmourishofficial thank you...maybe you could do a video on that...really like your video post
Great playing as usual, Bjorn. I was wondering if you like the studio version of Have a Cigar, with the phase 90, or the 77 live version with the colorsound power booster? Every time I hear that power booster, or a similar pedal, I just feel like I need it on my board! To me those live 77 recordings are just too damn awesome for this world. This hot wax pedal sounds like it can get pretty damn close.
I've always preferred the live version. 77 especially but it sounds pretty good in 75 as well. The CPB is needs the right amp or it will sound like a fart. More on that here www.gilmourish.com/?p=7115
Noted for when I record my Fart-O-Rama album
Nice demo and playing as always. Just bought that pedal today! The stacked tone kills!
Thanks!
I just listen to this once in a while to enjoy the playing. Also, the Hiwatt (Reeves in this case) works so incredibily well with these tones. They are so dynamic and fast. Just plain beautiful. I built a Triwatt myself and that has to be the best amp I have ever had!
Terrific videos! Subscribed!
Thanks!
Great video! I may be wrong, but it sounded like you were also able to pull some Queen sounds out of the pedal at about 3:44.
I haven’t explored Mr May’s tones with the pedal but I’m sure it’s capable.
great sound! i own one of these. lovely tone!
you should make a video about how you record a guitar sound. what settings do you use on your daw and audio unit. maybe a little eq too? :)
Hi Bjorn, great playing and tone as always.
I'm torn between this and the Boss bd2, I don't mind paying the bit extra for the hot wax, but in your opinion is it worth paying more for or is the bd2 just a better option. I'm basically just wanting Gilmour tones and I have a strat with seymour duncans like yours.
Thanks!
The Hot Wax is probably more versatile as it has two very different sounding overdrives and a two band tone stack. It's hard to beat the BD2 though...
Great pedal review Bjorn!!! Ever tried the Bogner La Grange??? Seems to work pretty good for me.
Thanks! No, never tried it.
Hey Bjorn! Awesome video! Which pedal you like best Between the BD2/Phat mod and the crayon? Thx
They're somewhat overlapping although the Crayon has a bit more compression and mids. Both works great on most types of amps. Hard to choose one, as the Crayon is very similar to the Tube Driver, but I think I'd go for the BD2 just because I fond it a tad more versatile.
gilmourish RIIS awesome! Thx man!
WOW!
Was looking to buy the TD-X and the Powerbooster. Seems that I can save a lot of $$$ and space with the Hot Wax!!!
Don't be so sure. Imo this pedal is not very good and would not even get you close to the tones of the other two you mentioned. But hey, maybe it will work for you, But I really tried to make it sound good and it didn't. Sorry to say.
The Crayon side is ok, pretty decent.
I mean...you tell me. Does this sound good? It sounded worse in person.
ruclips.net/video/xdbdt97BgEE/видео.html
You're better off with an SD-1 and a BD-2.
Matt Gilbert difference between a fender super Reverb and a Hiwatt circuit. Night and day. One is lower voiced, warm whereas the other is thinner and sometimes harsh sounding. Big difference between those amps and shows with the video demos.
Yeah I know for sure that a 140$ pedal can’t get close to two 400$ pedals. But for now I’m still building my board and I’ll probably get the PB and TD-X one day...
More: I have a Laney L20t-112 with celestion speakers. SSL-5 pick up Bridge and fat 50’
What do you think about the DOD Carcosa? It seems to be one of the most versatile fuzzes, doing light overdrive to vintage fuzz and doom/stoner fuzz.
Haven't tried it.
Carcosa is fantastic as both a boost and a crazy fuzz, but not 'smooth' at all. If you want massive wall of fuzz or edgy splatty sounds then it's amazing. It's actually getting more use as a booster in my rig at the moment, but the velcro fuzz is so great I'm considering getting a second so I have access to both sounds at once.
Great demo. How does the crayon compare with the boss Bd2. Better ?
The Crayon has a bit more mids and compression.
Have you ever tried the Fulltone Plimsoul for the Gilmour tones? I think it may be awesome
Which the setting of delay? Thanks and congratulations...
Hi, only u can tell me this. What do u think about using the Dimarzio HS-3 (Malmsteen 1st set pups) in the bridge?
1) I have 3 single coils with D.C. 6,5-7,4 resistance, and HS 3 have a 23,4 resistance😱in that case I need a new pots on bridge?
2) What do u think about using this in Gilmour music?
Depends on what amp you use. Obviously it's different pickups than what David's using but how they will translate depends on the voicing and headroom of your amp and what sort of gain pedals you use.
Can the hot tubes be used as a distortion like DS-1 OR MXR Prime Disto?
Yes. There's lots of gain if your crank the Crayon and you can add the Hot Tubes for even more.
Thanks. But what delay are you using and the settings on it.
I use this for Stones, Zeppelin, Bryan Adams, anything where I need a good fuzz drive and lighter drive
Which one would you recommend between this Crayon and Blues Driver?? Crayon has more flexibility having bass and treble right???
They're both great and both work nicely on most amps. The Crayon has that two band EQ and a tad more mids.
I recently got this pedal and love the tones it produces. I find that it adds a massive and unreasonable volume boost, though, especially when stacked. When using the pedals in isolation, but especially when stacked, I need to keep the volume knobs on the pedal turned nearly all the way down, even when the drive knobs aren’t dialed too high. Anyone else have this issue, or have a useful suggestion? I’d turn the guitar volume down, but then I’m not driving the pedal. I use a volume pedal after my drives, but then I face a two-step issue. First I need to engage the pedal, and then back off the volume. That seems a bit clunky.
Don't have any volume issues with my pedal. What sort of amp do you have?
Ok, hard to tell what the problem might be but keep in mind that the Hot Wax, and at least the Crayon side, has a bit of mid range and compression. Both of your amps are fairly scooped and open, so adding more mids and compression will sound louder or you’ll perceive a tone with more presence.
Hi Bjorn, is there a Laney studio amp that sounds like a '73 Hiwatt for pedals? Just curious, I know my Reeves 50 did sound just like an early 70's 4 holer but I want less volume with that same tone...not easy
I'm not that familiar with all the Laney models but I guess the GHR, although probably more Marshall, or the VH. I also recommend the Lionheart amps. Not exactly Hiwatt but awesome British voiced pedal platform.
How about EHX Hot Tubes, is it transparent to boost after a big muff? Or it sound muddy? Is an alternative to a BD2 or Tube Driver?
The Hot Tubes is very transparent so I'd say more like a Tube Driver, although a bit less compressed. The Hot Tubes circuit is featured in the Hot Waz so you'll hear me play it last in the clip.
Would the Crayon or the BD-2 work better for Tube Driver tones on a fairly small setup?
What do you mean by small?
Bedroom low volume small.
I have both after Bjorns recommendation. I prefer the BD-2 on my bigger HiWatt setup but the Crayon for my Laney L5T. Although the crayon works very well for both...
@gilmourish riis Crayon or TD-X? I'm undecided. Many thanks
The TDX is closer to the Tube Driver, while the Crayon may be more versatile with more mids and compression. Will probably be easier to dial in on different types of amps.
@@gilmourishofficial Thanks, Bjorn. TD-X ordered.
Nice playing,..
Thanks!
Demo track is pretty much Shine on you crazy diamond, right?
I played more or less the same chords yes.
Please Can you suggest to me a web site or RUclips Channel where i can find like these backing tracks
I do not like this pedal for guitar. Having a shared EQ makes it difficult to dial in a great tone on both sides. The blend knob is next to useless for guitar, but it comes in handy for bass. I find this pedal better for bass guitar than electric guitar. Otherwise I really like both the Crayon and the Hot Tubes!
Yes, the blend knob is probably more suitable for bass. I've never used it on guitar. I find it easy to dial in the tones for both though. I mainly use the Crayon but adding the Hot Tubes for boost, with the same EQ, works nicely for me. I guess it depends on the amp and pickups. too. As you can see in the clip, the EQ settings for both circuits are more or less the same.
What’s the exact model and year of that fender strat?
www.bjornriis.com/my-gear/1stratocaster/
Would this be a good pedal to place after a Rams Head reissue ?
Yes
would the EHX hot tubes work for the tube driver sound?
The Crayon or, as I'm showing here, the Crayon side of the Hot Wax, is EHXs version of the Tube Driver. The Hot Tubes, which is also featured in the Hot Wax, is more of a booster and closer to the old Power Boost David used in the early 70s.
Killer pedal. Amazing playing. The best band. Lol
Thanks!
I love the way you play and the feelings shown in the way you're playing. And please i want this backing track you used for shine on
Thank you! The track was just something I recorded very quick for this review :)
@@gilmourishofficial can you please upload it to your website so i can play along?
Why not demo them combined?
You’ll find lots of vids on YT of this one. I wanted to demonstrate my favourite settings.
💯
Hot Wax or BD2? 🤯
Both pedals a very versatile and will work on most amps. The Hot Wax has both the Crayon and Hot Tubes, so it will cover more ground. Hard to choose one really.
Are you icelandic
Norway... close :)
Watch another Gilmourish video, buy another pedal....
It actually sounds better on "crayon"
Apples and oranges. Two very different sounding circuits.
Yes but one would think the tube amp circuit would have a warmer sound but unfortunately it does not present that the crayon circuit actually came across fuller sounding .
Ciao,
..but are you becoming bi-tone !!? put it a lot of color, both in CAM and in Stanza! thanks for existing!! greetings from Calabria.it
:)
I tried one of these and it sounded harsh and horrible. Sorry to say, but it did. And I tried several guitars and amps.
I'm sure we all have different experiences. I love it and it's not bright or harsh at all to my ears... and on my gear.
@@gilmourishofficial I like the Hot Tubes on its own :)
