The R rated Old Dogs cut thing sounds similar to what happened with the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie. James Gunn originally wrote a raunchy comedy similar to movies like Americam Pie, but WB changed course by the time production started. There's also rumors they used CGI to cover up cleavage, which may explain where the monster's effects budget went.
The problem being that Scooby-Doo was an active kid's franchise by that point. Even though there wasn't a cartoon since Pup Named Scooby-Doo, they were well into the DTV Scooby movies at that point, not to mention Cartoon Network rerunning the series. It's a shame that had to happen, but you can imagine a bunch of parents that refuse to do any research on movie ratings taking their 5 year olds to the movie and being appalled enough to write angry letters to the studio. I made the mistake of seeing the Yogi Bear live action movie (HB fan), and you would NOT believe the prudishness of the parents in that theater constantly talking about "family friendly" crap. They laughed at an unfunny "I Like Big Butts" joke in the movie, and they're totally the kind of Karens that would have called the song smut back in the day when used unironically.
@@mightyfilm Yeah. I don't entirely fault the studio for steering it in a more family friendly direction considering the source material. It's still definitely a what if to consider.
Agreed. Had Scooby strictly been a Gen-Xer nostalgic franchise that wasn't touched since its heyday, an adult parody movie would have been considered okay. Like that crap Banana Splits DTV horror movie. But Scooby was, and still is, a cash cow franchise targeted to kids. I don't see WB granting a PG-13 movie that isn't super hero related to a kid friendly franchise. Of course, I once saw an Easy Reader type book version of The Dark Knight, so what constitutes as "family friendly" is all over the map.
Also happened with Kangaroo Jack, it was originally written and filmed as a PG-13 crime comedy, until disastrous test screenings and one of the producers being inspired by Snow Dogs, the film was majorly recut and marketed as PG family comedy.

14:20 To be fair, functional jet packs capable of flight have existed since the ‘60s, they’re just not widely available, as well as being wildly impractical (only able to operate for a few minutes). I first saw one in action during the opening ceremony of the 1984 Olympics. Pretty cool, but you’re right, it doesn’t need to be in this movie.
I first saw it on the '70s live action Saturday morning kids' show "Ark II," in which a group of scientist kids and a monkey traveled a post-apocalyptic wasteland in a futuristic van. They had a jetpack they would use for scouting and such.
@@noneofyourbusiness4616 Oh wow, i remember Ark II but forgot there was a jet pack in it 😳 I guess cuz everything on that show registered as “futuristic sci-fi” in my brain so the jet pack didn’t seem “real world” til i saw it during the Olympics 🤔
Sounds plausible anyway 😄
@@Gappasaurus I only remember the jet pack in Ark II because when I looked up the show awhile back on RUclips they show it in the opening credits sequence!
@@noneofyourbusiness4616 Cool, i’ll have to check it out again 👍🏼
Jetpacks could be made so much better and available for everyone but they don't want us to have that kind of freedom.
Another Robin Williams Forgotten Failures: “Toys”
Toys, a far better movie than Old Dogs lol
Now that one I liked.
I like that movie
What about "RV"
I do remember that one. Williams did appear in some turkeys. Shame, he was pretty talented.
Would you ever do a video about the Tim Robbins/Martin Lawrence movie Nothing to Lose? I always thought that movie was hilarious and kind of unknown.
I legitimately forgot this movie existed... still won't watch it.
i remember watching it during the same week when Robin Williams has passed away as a memoriam for him alongside many other's of his movies and featured farewell tweets of his colleagues onscreen
Evolution is underrated by the way. Even if the CG hasn’t aged that good and it’s a bit too similar to Ivan Reitman’s first two Ghostbusters only with alien creatures.
I agree. It was on recently and I laughed so hard at "let's shampoo us some aliens line". So what if some of it didn't age as gracefully as other movies
@@bradwolf07 even got a short lived cartoon spin-off sequel during Fox Kids’ dying days airing around the same time as Mon Colle Knights. Still better than the TV spin-off/prequels Hotel Transylvania and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs got.
@@BigEOT3 I think I remember the Evolution cartoon. I miss Fox Kids
Evolution is just an elongated shampoo advert.
@@thursoberwick1948 Evolution. Funny movie. Must wash hair with Head and Shoulders. Mmmm, yes, Selenium Sulfide……
Oh okay. I was going to contend that this wasn't forgotten, but when I read the title I was actually thinking of Wild Hogs. I only very vaguely remember this.
Little did we realize at the time just five years later there would be a reverse Alderaan where everyone cried out in pain over the loss of one voice.
...y'know...if the movie was just a dad being taught by a famous kids entertainer how to BE a dad, there'd be something to that...I really think it could've worked well!
sometimes the secret ingredient is to keep it simple, keep it tight.
Exactly. Axe Travolta and it's a Bernie Mac/Robin Williams film. Coulda been amazing
You should do a docu-mini on Robin Williams.
He should totally do one.
@@mechajay3358 I know right!
Well, this year will be the tenth anniversary of Williams’ death, so maybe it’ll happen.
"Dance of spring time" is really a great line
I love seeing Fr Ted fans outside of Ireland. Probably the best Irish TV shows. It's still very relevant in Irish culture and quoted endlessly.
R.I.P Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly. Absolute legends!
So many of the forgotten failures have been movies I’ve loved forever 😭😭😭😭
lol
This is one of those "comedies" that'll give you second hand embarrassment
"I hear your a raciest now father. Should we all be racist now?"
Ngl my Grandma and I watched this when I was like 8 and we actually both loved it and whenever she’d come over and we’d have nothing to watch she’d say “wanna watch Old Dogs?” And we watched it probably about once a year up till I was 11. Even tho it’s bad it still has a soft spot in my heart.
I love Ardel from Father Ted. His show My Hero was odd yet amusing!
So glad to find another father Ted fan, that show doesn’t get enough of a mention nowadays.
This movie takes me back so much, me and my gma went and saw this in theaters and we laughed so hard! It’s crazy how fast life moved forward because back then I thought I was gonna be young forever and now I’m about to turn 22 and while that’s still young, it feels crazy that 22 years have passed since I was born and in that time so much has happened 🙏 good and bad! Thank you for the trip down memory lane
What I remember the most is the scene of the pill swap, as a child I was so conscious that I could actually kill someone by doing so, up to a point I am traumatize by that, so when I sort my great aunt's pills I always double check everything is correct otherwise they could end up with a Joker grin like Travolta, or dying of an overdose, sad and what a terrible feeling to associate with a comedy.
I just realized you have over 100,000 subscribers! As someone who's been following you since you first put out your Gene Wilder video, that's incredible to see. Keep up the good work Joe!
Travolta is pretty good at mugging at the camera. Dude has a pretty funny elastic face when he wants to.
that was a thing for awhile in the 2000s where a movie that was supposed to be adult oriented was repurposed into a family movie. Kangaroo Jack was supposed to be a gritty mafia movie set in australia and it was just completely pivoted.
I didn't know there was going to be a Wild Hogs sequel. I like to see would that would had looked like. I love and miss you Robin we all do. You made us laugh and cried.
The only thing I remember from this was the gorilla Seth Green bit.
That sence brought my review of this film from a 5/10 to a 4/10 but maybe that's just because I have an irrational hatred for seth green
It's the bear scene from without a paddle all over again.
I always wanted to watch this. I was fascinated by the concept and seeing Williams and Travolta together in a movie seemed like it could be a nice surprise. I may check it out. Great video dude , you've been killing it with these videos lately! You should talk about Monkeybone , that movie is bizarre.
I still hurt just seeing his face. We need him back now more than ever. Devastating loss.
This is the movie that turned Matt dillon into Jack the serial killer.
Poison! 😣
9:42 Makes me happy that Americans are discovering this gem of a show. In Ireland, if you quote a line to anyone on the streets, they instantly know what you’re talking about.
How is My Hero seen?
I know it is an overworked idea for a show, but Brian made it work as Thermo-Man IMO.
It’s not small, it’s far away….
I spent a ton of time watching Ted back in night school. It was on tv in Canada a lot back in the day.
@@ThomasSpychalski It’s not that well known among the general public. When it comes to modern Channel 4 comedies, Derry Girls is the one that’s popular over here. Hell, they got their own mural in Derry City.
Down with this sort of thing!
@@thursoberwick1948 Careful now.
Jetpacks exist, they've been around for 60 years and used especially in Thunderball.
Thank you for helping bring attention to father ted.
Completely forgot about this movie. Didn't even remember I actually saw it until it got to the hand model scene where her hands got crushed by the car trunk.
The story of Old Dogs being an R Rated comedy is similar to what happened with Kangaroo Jack.
Btw, I wonder what your thoughts on the Whitest Kids U’Know film “Miss March?” Although, giving recent events, now’s probably not the right time to talk about it
And Scooby Doo.
Really?!?
@@rayluna1432 Kangaroo Jack was originally a PG-13 crime comedy. I don't remember if Kangaroo Jack was even a character in that early version, but Warner turned it into a family movie.
Have never heard of Miss March. Would talking about it now, be considered offensive, or some thing? If so, why?? Kangaroo Jack was & still is a piece of shit.
@@brandonpage7087 I think it might be inappropriate to critique now because the film's Writer, Director, and Star Trevor Moore just died.
This movie is actually quite funny. Williams and Travolta are great together
Oooh wow, I somehow remember this movie now, thanks for bringing it up Joe.
Still can't get over the fact that robin was in so much pain he had to end it all
For years I remembered that scene with the pill switching, it was so strange and disturbing to a child me that I thought it was a dream. Thanks for unearthing that
One of the best movie channels out there. Never stop.
Hearing Robin talk about his daughter Zelda was adorable.
It’s like this entire movie that I forgot existed got blasted to the forefront of my memory when I saw the camp scene
I actually really enjoyed Old Dogs and really don't understand that hate towards it.
3:23
RIP bernie mac
This was one of his last roles before dying.
You are now in a better place
Bro I watched this when I was like 8 and I had no idea wtf was going on.
I miss Robin Williams man. He was such an rich human being. It’s sad the way he went out. Poor guy! I have so many memories watching his movies throughout my life tho, I’ll always remember him.
i grew up watching and dying laughing at old dogs so this was a super pleasant surprise seeing this pop up on my recommended. i’ll always love this movie bc of childhood nostalgia. the nub nub scene always kills me.
Your comment to the effect that it is a sad swan song for three talents reminds me of Peter Sellers death. "Being There" would have been THE movie to go out on, rather than the lamentable "Fiendish Plot of Fu Manchu".
I forgot how much comedies from this era would rely on bad racial stereotypes for half the jokes
U mad?
Go watch black comedians. Literally all racial stereotypes. “ white people talk like this “
Damn. I totally forgot boondocks was a thing.
Dude!!! Killing it with the father Ted reference!! You must have lived with u.k. parents or grandparents too!! Awesome 👌 only other person who has ever mentioned that show in my life!!! P.s. sorry for all the (!!!!) I was legit excited.
Bruh I still love that he named his daughter Zelda. 🤣
2:38 Shaq's airpods sitting on that table in the background there
I grew up loving this film, and never saw it as anything other as a great funny video.
Saw this film when I was a teen & I absolutely loved it. Made me laugh so hard. But I'm never gonna rewatch it as an adult. Cause it probably isn't THAT great & my tastes as a teen were mostly sh*t. 😂
wise choice
When Robin Williams took the prescription that screwed up his depth perception I never laughed so hard in my laugh. How Disney released this movie is beyond me.
Disney isn't infallible and they're not beyond releasing dumpster fires (personally that constitutes like half their releases but that's just me). obviously nothing as offensively incompetent as this, but close enough
@@sunsetman22 All that from just one scene? While I agree with you about Disney’s line of garbage movies in the last 20 years I’ll still give credit if I find a scene that’s funny. This a review of one movie not a critique of Disney as a whole.
The editing and comedic timing in these videos is getting better and better.
Robin Williams is such a good comedy actor
I love your videos!
I wish I could subscribe to you twice for using a Father Ted clip.
You are a man of culture, sir.
I forgot this movie existed. Either way, good video.
Since you've made videos on comedies that are almost cult classics or forgotten failures, have you ever thought about making videos on: Radioland Murders, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, Strange Magic (If you want to talk about animated films), and Wild Hogs?
I bring those films up because:
1. They have a neat cast consisting of well-known actors and characters actors.
2. Have a neat premise/idea that had potential to be good.
3. It didn't do well at the box office and was panned by critics.
This looks like the type of movie my parents would love lol
My parents loved this movie. I remember watching it at lot when I was younger, especially on road trips.
I think Travolta and Williams had similar careers. Both got their start on ABC sitcoms in the 70s and became major motion picture stars.
I feel like some sort of review on the Popeye musical would be really on brand for you.
Old Dads would have been a much better title. Old Dogs sounds like a sequel to Old Hogs.
Three Men and A Baby is literally one of the craziest movies I’ve ever seen please cover that one 😹
It was based on a French film. Said French film spawned a lot of North and South Indian remakes in various languages.
It was directed by none other than Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and was actually the highest grossing movie to come out in 1987.
I think 1997’s Rocketman needs a dissecting
I knew this movie existed been a long time after I’d seen it many years ago.
Who the heck gets picked for those advanced screenings?! Like honestly I’d of wanted to see the R rated version of this!
I love this film honestly. Everyone in my opinion did a great job.
I’ve never seen this film, but I’m aware that it’s reputation isn’t good. Perhaps the film would have been better received if it was released as an R rated comedy. Robin Williams gave his all in everything he did and I’m sure this film is no exception. Thanks for covering this film.
Shorten your summarized intros. By the 5 minute mark I assumed we were already "IN" to it...then you say "ok so let's take a look at Old Dogs...." No thanks, you already got me for 5 minutes.
