"not a great drawing but will suffice for a board" okay but boards look AMAZING. the roughness yet amazing proportions are beautiful. i prefer simplicity over detailed drawing tbh. this really helped me, just breaking it down to two shapes and then working off of that
looking at the comments, a lot of people seem to think this is something for beginners. It aint. Like.. The dude teaches artists at pixar. He teaches professionals how to draw better; if you're looking for guidelines, help with proportions, structure of facial features, etc. This video definitely isnt for you, it cuts too many corners and would hinder the growth of lesser skilled artists. You need to know the rules, to know how to effectively break them. And if you need help with things like proportions... you dont know the rules well enough for this technique.
to be fair I was somewhat confused too, the sphere thing is something pretty much everyone knows about and there wasn't really any explaining in the video lol.
It’s also not meant to be like a full lesson, it’s just meant to be like a useful tip (even beginners can use it this video just lacks the full context). Schoolism is a service that offers courses, so this is just a taste of what you’d be getting
this is such a helpful tip. it seems really obvious once you see it, but really i find i used to start my faces with the eyes instead of the nose, and it would always flatten out the angle of my drawing. the nose as an anchor makes much more sense and you get a more true direction. very cool, thanks for posting!
This kiiiiiinda helped, thank you for taking the time out. I wouldn't say this is very beginner appropriate, this is more for intermediate to advanced students
Man, it is going to take me so long to get to the level where just the circle and pyramid would suffice. Right now, I need like a billion guidelines. But brilliant work. Thanks for sharing.
watch Anthony Jones approach. Learn to draw lots of circles on pages. After you've drawn them. Draw 2 lines that cross each other on each circle/sphere to determine the terminator line. It's a good way of learning.
It's funny how true this is for so many tutorials lol, lucky for me I moved from that stage/era to just able to copy it and just thinking about shapes more than the lines work.
but like hes not telling u how the anatomy works hes trying to explain how to make it easyer for u if u have a basic understanding of the human face but have trouble drawing it in different angles well atleast to me it was pretty helpfull ⊂((・▽・))⊃
Thank you so much, Alex. I love your work and this video was super helpful. I've been drawing for over 15 years now and this has honestly been the most informative lesson I've learned outside of taking advanced art courses in high school for 3 years. Thank you so much again!
Very good information !! as well as the approach to drawing faces. I really grateful for those advices. That gesture class has to be incredible. THank you so much :D
I have watched so many videos to find a way to quickly sketch faces and this is the simplest I've come across for eyeballing. Thanks so much for sharing this knowledge.
wow i plan on being board artist but laying in the head has always been tough trying to vet the right angle everytime i literally drew 5 of the most dynamic faces in less than ten minutes thanks
It works perfectly fine to me and I'm kinda of a beginner, so thanks a lot. I think that's depends a lot of the way the person draws, so even if you're a beginner, give it a shot.
Thanks for posting! You really have to know anatomy to use only the cranium and the nose as your initial landmarks. I find it helps to sketch in the cranium, the zygomatic arches (cheekbones) and the mandible (jawbone). Once I get those three landmarks down, I can place everything else.
Perhaps this is an advanced level tutorial given how you decide to draw the angle of the nose first which is good. But, for beginners here it is important to first figure out the direction of the sphere. Like using construction lines. This makes the nose part even more better.
Too funny Booby Chiu's participation on the video! But it is true that Schoolism is awesome in many ways. Thank you for your efforts on making it such an amazing place to learn!
wow, I didn't notice that video was for more advencedes one until I read the comments. I was drawing along with him and feeling good. Now I'm happy that I am a little far away from where I stared.
This is a nice tutorial, however, I'm one that just usually draws things as how they look I don't really break things down in an abstract way, so I suppose this particular method you proposed would really work for those who think more outside the box
I tried it and it really worked. I am definitely going to do some sketches with this technique everyday 💖💖💖💖 tysm. My angles were always a little bit off or not that dynamic 🫶
Awesome. I'll def. be taking Alex's class next. In this video, I'm curious to know if he's drawing in real time? Or is the drawing part pre-recorded & sped up?
Hey Phillip, some of the drawing portions in the lesson are sped up, so a lot of it is not done in real time. We did that to keep the video length manageable.
I have great difficulty with proportion. even when I measure I still can't do it. Any tips someone can give me? I started redrawing the same poses over and over to see if I can fix the obvious mistakes but it's a slow progress. I have the tendency to focus in on one thing and block every thing else out and I do this when I draw as well. Perhaps that's my problem.
Perspective can play into proportions and spacing of various parts of anatomy. There's a book called Perspective Drawing by Kenneth Auvil I liked that demonstrates rules for perspective through diagrams.
Thank you very much for the tutorial. Please can you share that brush name? I love those squared ones but I can't find those, usually I get packs with tons of "special" brushes but I just want basic ones like that you used.
When you are referring to an up angle shot (0:48) that is in fact a low-angle shot, because it is below the eye line and looking up. And the same goes for the opposite, a high-angle shot is looking down on the subject, because the camera is high. Just wanted to point that out in case someone searches for what they think is a low-angle shot and gets a shot looking up the subject. Sorry to sound like a smart arse.
I like that terminology comes up. It definitely has it's place. Like it says in the description: "Mr.Woo has storyboarded for such films as Ratatouille, Wall-E, Finding Dory and more. He is one of only a handful of people to have ever taught at Pixar" I'm just assuming he knows what he's talking about, even though the terms might not be text book.
you seem to always put the sphere differently? can you explain where the spere should be ? cause at some points it looks like you are making the sphere almost the whole head and at other points it seems like its just the skull part of the head.
On the first 2, he placed it in the middle of the sphere. In the front view, it was a little to the bottom I believe because most people prefer to start the base of the nose on the lower side of the sphere. The third one was also at the center of the sphere and a little to the upper right to match the angle of the nose in relation to the eyes. I have not advanced further in the video but I will report on any tip I could give
I think it looks like they have it set to about normal speed while he is talking, although some frames seem to get lost when he makes quick gestures. The video is definitely sped up when he isn't speaking though.
I found it very interesting how you added the irises of the eyes before the eyelids (for most of them) that's actually really helpful :00

That was excellent, 10 years later and I finally understand. No one ever explained it that way. Thank you
This kiiiiiinda helped, thank you for taking the time out. I wouldn't say this is very beginner appropriate, this is more for intermediate to advanced students
ya, a few more guidlines for placing the face features would be great

And that took me nowhere @@quinnrichards5969
@@ic.xc. Where I can watch Anthony Jones approach?
Don’t quit
This is literally like that meme
1.Draw a sphere and a triangle
2. Draw the rest of the face

I loved Alex's workshop the first time you guys where in london, Cheers and much love from Portugal!
This really helped me draw face positions, thank you so much!

It's a really simple. but effective method, thumbs up.
ive applied this to my art and it has sped up and improved my ability to draw faces so much. Thank you!!

Oh, I could never draw the profile because I never noticed how far away the cranium was. Thank you for making this video!

I could watch you draw all day! Great tutorial! 🙂
I like the minimal line technique, very inspiring
Too funny Booby Chiu's participation on the video! But it is true that Schoolism is awesome in many ways. Thank you for your efforts on making it such an amazing place to learn!
love the art style
This is absolutely brilliant! Thanks for breaking it all down!
Thank you for the tip, it helped me a lot >
Never thought of using the triangle of the nose a base for the face. I always used the 3 circles technique around the eyes.
The Steve Huston video is awesome and he's a great teacher.
wow, I didn't notice that video was for more advencedes one until I read the comments. I was drawing along with him and feeling good. Now I'm happy that I am a little far away from where I stared.
the pyramid really helps
This about saved my life 🙏
Perfect! cant wait to try this over the weekend
Amazing method.
You made it looked so easy
I have slightly different system, but damn, this one works pretty amazing as well. Thanks for the tip!
This video helped me improve a lot, thank you very much!
Great ! Which brush did you use ? May I know ?
This looks great! It reminds me of the iron giant style still good!
I like! Really nice and simple approach. Subscribed to channel.
The Face at 5:10 "What did you just say to me?"
Wow! This is now part of my daily routine.
this looks extremely simple woah
I would love to know the brush he uses here
is this a better method than the generic sphere with a cross
if you're more of an amateur artist, then no
This is extremely helpful . Thanks a lot

Amazing stuff, thanks man!

Impressive! 😍
a good way to simplify things...By the way, nice voice.
You’re a genius.
Can you paint a head of one character in different angels. So that you can recognize this particular person again.
This was very helpful

i luv u style
first kindly teach us how to make the pyramid where its supposed to be, just like you did in the first drawing.. the following part was so neat..
Now I'm never going to not see spheres and pyramids
That helps!
Thank you! great tutorial! :)
Pls don’t understand me in wrong way but... his voice is so hot😭😭🔥
Love how the comment above yours on my screen says "you sound like you're in great pain :/" and thats just sending me
i'll try this. now its easier to draw a face ,thanks:)
Super Tip! Thank you!

Peteru Avertis yeah he definitely knows what he's doing could have just said the wrong thing
I AM SURE THAT THE TERMS HE SAID IN THE VIDEO ITS PROBABLY REFER TO US THE BEHOLDERS VIEWS.

Are we storyboarding Hitchcock? Anything to help me draw like Mr. Woo.
I used a lot of Hitchcock because I love his movies, and I love the way old actors look.

Nice!
Can I ask how to decide where to put the pyramid, I guess there must be some proportion. Thanks!

If i sign up, would you have more tips like this? As I fine it very useful and have done your class twice :)
Make more video brother
Where do you place your pyramid within the circle?
RushParkourist in the middle. It's easier to cut the circle in half and put the nose in the middle
5:54 AHH it looks like a really angry baby chick haha
so where is that pyramide?
I'm a bit confused as to what your anatomical sphere is aligning with - the skull top tooth line?
Does Alex use any social media platforms like instagram or tumblr? I know he has a blogspot, but I'd love to see his work as often as possible
what brush are you using and where can i download
Is there more on the class "Drawing the head"? All I can find on the schoolism website from Alex Woo is gesture drawing.
Someone is a Hitchcock fan. :D
Do you usually draw this fast, or is the drawing process fast-forwarded?
He's so good that you think it's fast-forwarded
I think it looks like they have it set to about normal speed while he is talking, although some frames seem to get lost when he makes quick gestures. The video is definitely sped up when he isn't speaking though.
Oh wait, he replied earlier in the video. My bad for not checking the comments all the way :)
No worries :)
what brush do you use while painting? mind to share?
that fucking clipping
Which course is this from?
What brush is being used in this video?
Alex what's the brush you use?
What is the computer software that u r using ?

Simple steps
this is GOLD! Thank you for this video. Subscibe!
there's the tendency to do bigger noses with this method )
This video doesn't really show us how you know where to put the things that you're putting. I need help with that
Sorry, you draw with what?....tablet ?
of what do you use ?
Thanks
I used photoshop and a 22" cintiq tablet to do the drawings in the video.
Thank you! ( i see now your video and blog)
no shit this help 1000x
