Male pop stars trying their best to sell to a (straight) male listenership and not be labelled "for the girls".* Rappers were already seen as cooler and more masculine than singers, and had bigger male fanbases, so once the rappers started singing themselves, it altered the game. Many singers in the 2010's fused a Hip-Hop/Urban aesthetic into their Pop music, or marketed themselves with Hip-Hop production or styling, while male pop stars going the conventional route were labelled "corny" & "for the girls" - which is how many young men & boys dismiss K-pop today for clinging to dated Pop formulas. Two of the biggest popstars of the last decade: The Weeknd & Post Malone, both used hip-hop as an ingredient in their pop music. Post Malone has the most diamond selling singles : 20x Platinum “Sunflower", “White Iverson,” “Congratulations,” “I Fall Apart,” “rockstar,” “Psycho,” “Better Now,” and “Circles” with a huge (straight) *male* fanbase. And once Drake slow jam melodic raps became a viable alternative to listening to r&b crooners, male R&B vocalists took a hit. Why listen to an actual male r&B vocalist when you can just put on some Drake - two birds one stone. That did a lot of damage to r&b’s commerical viability in the 2010’s imo and they tried to compensate by adopting more hip-hop aesthetics themselves and delving into trap production, which meant r&b became indistinguishable from melodic hip-hop and lost its identity.

The key is that with current Pop being mostly marketed towards straight women and gay men, the standard for Pop girls is to be aspirational/relatable while Pop boys have to be desirable. Except atm, relatable is the name of the game in the arts industry in general, so the Pop girl marketing tactic just works a lot better. Also explains why Ed Sheeran is never seen as a big culture force despite being very popular/influential. He doesnt really fit the typical desirable pop boy archetype.

justin bieber is definitely this century’s/generation’s main pop boy. i think purpose era especially was definitely a learning experience for everyone, in terms of what success to aim for but also what limits to set as an artist and a person. i think he’s definitely earned his right to slow down his career after all he has accomplished but even when he has been active in the past few years, he has still been breaking and setting records. he is still someone who can influence the pop landscape and i think it’s crazy that a lot of people wouldn’t consider him a current male pop boy

Seeing Omar on here is such a surprise to me. In my head he’s still a small indie artist. I saw him for the first time in 2018 and the tickets were only like $20 at a small venue. I don’t think he makes conventional pop music but I can see how his newer stuff would appeal to a wider audience. I’m happy for him though and can definitely see him getting bigger!
I think Conan Gray has the potential to rise up, but probably will be one of those artists with a cult following that slowly grows with each release. I became a stan of his this year after his most recent release. He has similar music in style to people like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift (Singer/songwriter, diaristic "relatable" lyrics), and more recently Dua Lipa and The Weekend (80s revival), and has proven that he can and will change up his musical style to fit what he's interested in to grow as an artist. He has the distinct eras thematically and visually, changes his personal look (not drastically but he still does) with every era, and has been adding in more in terms of dancing and performance as well. And has been relatively open about his life and struggles both in his music and publicly given that he basically grew up on RUclips similarly to Troye Sivan. I do agree though that the ability for male stars to keep their privacy a bit more means less people know about them, they aren't in headlines as often for "controversy" which unfortunately does drive the attention economy. Beiber and Harry Styles remain relevant generally because their personal life is constantly being speculated and talked about. For Conan, he hasn't had any big controversies and he hasn't publically dated anyone high profile (he continues to go out of his way to not reveal the other famous person who he did date last year). Additionally, while he is queer, he very adamantly refuses to label himself, and makes everything he says and writes about in relation to romance/relationships gender neutral. So unlike Harry Styles, who is often put on blast for "queerbaiting", Conan maintains a loyal queer audience and avoids the speculation, but at the same time he isn't so blatantly open about his queerness that it draws the shock value like Lil Nas X or Sam Smith or to a lesser extent, Chappell. He generally only ends up in headlines if it's in relation to Olivia Rodrigo since they're close friends, but at the same time he also refuses to piggy-back off his friends fame by collabing. He's often not included in the pop dialogue (as a whole or for the men in general) but I do think in some ways that may be purposeful. After having your whole life online since you were 9, I think he values not being as big as some other main pop acts because he wants to maintain a level of privacy and autonomy not afforded to larger acts (we all know how hard it's been for Chappell and many others). Hell, I only learned about him/his music outside of his Met Gala looks because my irl friend recommended one of his newer singles to me, and then his new album knocked my socks off when it dropped. He has a loyal and dedicated fan base that sell out arenas like MSG and the Kia Forum for him, and he definitely has the talent in spades, but I RARELY see people talking about him online outside of his niche small fan circles on Twitter and Reddit (maybe it's on purpose, maybe his fans want to gatekeep, idk). So, I see him getting bigger, but maybe not so big. Sorry for the essay, I just rarely see Conan talked about anywhere and this is my way of spreading the message :)
As a Conan Stan I feel like his current state is optimum where he is able to sell out 20k+ venues like MSG and maintaining a level of privacy and not much of the weird fame disadvantages. I do see him rise up in like 5 years when the GP wants to catch up to the lore or feel FOMO for the tight knit audience he has, sort of like how Taylor Swift shot to even higher levels post folklore and able to maintain that level of fame because of the lore and how her fandom is kind of "if you know you know" and GP was eventually sucked into being deep Swifties.

Guys and girls are expected to maintain weight, have parasocial relationships of international scale (see Weverse,Bubble) and have a new era every 6mos-1yr. Female artists have simply raised our expectations across different levels & created a formula that most male artists can't replicate. In particular, I feel like theres 3 main factors pop girls posses that only certain male artists have: a dedicated fandom, an interesting artistic image (i.e eras), & strong music that fans & non-fans can both enjoy. The only male artist I feel checks off all those boxes is the Weeknd. I consider Bruno Mars to be a rare exception bc everyone love his music (so basically he's the Adele of male artists). Also I can kinda imagine certain pop boys with cult followings (i.e Troye & Conan)experiancing a similar career trajectory as Charli & Sabrina in the next few years, just give them time to cook.

Stan culuture can definitly help the sucess of a song/album but that doesn't guarentee if a song is a hit (depending on how you classify what makes a hit). For example, Ariana Grande's "Yes and?" might've done well on the charts but many fans & non-fans alike consider it to be one of her worst songs. By contrast, we're seeing some artists who've been in the industry for years despite being praised by music critics finally experiancing sucsess. Sabrina, for example, has been in the industry for over a decade but Espresso is her first real hit & is considered "the song of the summer" in several countries. Considering how Sabrina used to have a very small fandom & was even the victim of a hate train, it's a huge 180 for her. Perosnally, I'm not a fan of the song & consider myself to be a casual listener of Sabrina but I can see this song being on a "greatest hits of the 2020s" in a few years. As for the songwriting, I think we're starting to see a bit of a shift there. There's a larger expectation for singers to contribute to the songwriting & some have become well known for being very invovled in it like Billie, who very rarely works with other writers & producers (besides her brother).
i think there are plenty of major male pop stars but because they are men not extremely young like prime JB we don't consider them pop stars. expamples: JB, the weekend, bruno mars, harry styles, Jungkook, Ed Sheeran (formally drake)9 these are still major heavy hitters but not considered pop stars, also i dont think male pop stars had to follow the pop star arcs that female pop stars had to, for example that stupid ass color theory, or hair theory

Personally, I'm a big fan of the pop boys, especially the queer pop boys, and have found myself following a lot of their careers consistently for years, even going on a decade now for a few of them. Troye's album was one of the best western pop releases last year, Conan's album has been on infinite repeat this year, Lil Nas X always kills it, and Lauv has a super catchy discography. I recently got into Omar Apollo's recent album this year too though I personally don't know if I would classify his style of music as "pop" but that's neither here nor there. And don't even get me started on BTS (who I also consider queer pop boys but that's another nuanced convo for another time). They have been, are, and will remain un-fucking-stoppable and I don't think the pop scene will be prepared for their inevitable takeover once they make their comeback in late 2025/early 2026.

That being said: RM- has used male and female pronouns when referring to romantic partners in his music, constantly is highlighting queer artists on his socials, has been the most outspoken about his support of the community and is speculated to have had an ex-boyfriend sometime in the past. Suga- most likely bi/pan, has probably come the closest to openly stating it. Is very blatant even back in 2014 that he does not care about the gender of his partner but that the vibe is right. Also describes romantic partners in his music with male and female pronouns. Jin- Nothing as big as some of the others, however he is pretty open about his love for traditionally feminine clothes, colors and more. J-Hope- also not much for him, however he has a lot of friends and connections in SK's queer and trans community Jimin- has talked openly about how he doesn't align with traditional male gender presentation and although he uses he/him pronouns a lot of his works heavily suggest a preference for androgyny and gender-nonconformance. He also has openly expressed attraction towards men and women though has not stated directly. Taehyung- is also heavily involved in the SK queer community as well as queer communities abroad. Has also expressed attraction towards men and women and is often seen sporting clothing and jewelry and art specifically from queer designers, etc. Jungkook- also not as blatant as some of the other members, however he's expressed attraction towards men and women (and has been open about once having a crush on Namjoon(RM) when they were trainees) and also chooses to express himself physically in gender noncoforming ways as well. RM also stated in an English interview that none of the members had a gf or a bf at the time, which implies that at least a few of the members would not mind dating men or nb folx. Now I realize none of this can really be taken as "proof" nor should it be used to qualify whether or not they can make queer art however BTS has a massive queer fanbase for a reason and I think that's because many queer ARMY identify with the way they've chosen to express queerness throughout their career.
Kpop idols often do some same-sex flirty stuff as "fanservice" ("kpop idols being gay" will probably deliver some compilations demonstrating what I mean) but it also wouldn't shock me if half of BTS was actually queer. Their "love yourself" era (2017/2018) is the most queer-coded in my opinion (title tracks: DNA, Fake Love, Idol). But considering how conservative the Asian market is and that they are still their company's main cash cow despite being on military service hiatus: We might not find out for the next 5+ years or something.

Michael Jackson’s shadow is so big that no male star can exist without being a cheap version of him. I think only Theweeknd/Bruno stand on their own. The same happens with Madonna and the rest. As a shawn mendes stan (i was here for the latter half of his peak in like 2018/2019) I've been in and out of SO MANY music phases (K-pop, only female artists for like ages, etc.) . Lately though, I've been obsessed with a lot of male artists like Hozier, Benson Boone, Noah Kahan, Shawn Mendes (again because our boy is coming back!!!), Myles Smith, David Kushner, etc. etc. I noticed that despite the absolute BANGERS these guys are pushing out, they really aren't getting as talked about as alot of other great female artists! And while I do ofc love to see women on top, I can't help but feel a little sad that the male artists i really like aren't getting the same recognition. I do definitely agree that a big part of it is that women are analyzed more in the public eye, and therefore more likely to have "scandals" and be pressured to be the face of EVERYTHING, while people kinda only care about male artists for their music and not personal life (usually). It'd be nice if we could find a balance that'd give female artists more privacy and maybe some more visibility to the male artists coming up with great music!
Though people may only sort of know a few songs from Troye Sivan in America (I'm also American), I've seen him have a LOT of international recognition. His name pops up in the Kpop and Thai BL community often. I've been a Troye fan since his early RUclipsr days and I just love that people around the world know his name and body of work 🥰
He is famous enough to be mentioned by BTS' Jungkook as favourite singer/one he wanted to met for long time and they actually collaborated on some songs. I am Polish and was at Troye concert at music festival this June - many people seem to come mainly for him :)

I feel like male popstars such as Harry Styles lasts longer because he's appealing more for the female gaze rather than the hyper-masculine gaze. This is also why Kpop groups have such an appeal as well because they're catered to the female gaze. Someone else mentioned this but the last few major male pop stars have been Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson. I would say Harry styles but I don’t think so personally. It seems like a lot of the males in each genre have been disposed of , and only appear periodically. Males in pop and Rnb ( speaking in a mainstream sense) don’t seem to be able to have major demographics anymore. Other than rap , the females are definitely dominating the industry. But we’re getting a new generation of music, I can definitely see artists like grent Perez making it big for the long run.

Yes, I agreeee! I was trying to say this, very inarticulately, on another YT video about authenticity in music. The video was breaking down how Katy Perry's inauthentic approach to all her music is what's alienating her from connecting with fans and why she's bombing lately, and ultimately how, when you can't be real and relatable with people and show people who you really are (aka bear all) then that's what happens, and like yeah katy's flopping, but the fact that the girlies have to be 'relatable' and show their 'human' side in order to succeed or whatever is a DOUBLE STANDARD. Those same expectations are not placed on male artists/musicians. At least, not to the same degree.

The Weeknd is the biggest hitmaker of this decade so far with a nonstop string of hits since 2020. Then, we also have Harry Styles with his massive last album and tour. Bruno Mars finally released a new song under his name in 5 years and look at its numbers and he’s also touring stadiums currently. Coldplay’s current tour just grossed 1 billion. Post Malone back to big numbers after his last two albums underperformed. Just some examples… Also a lot of male artists are not exactly “pop”, they are scattered other genres. Noah Kahan, Zach Bryan, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Hozier, Playboi Carti, etc. I would say they are “pop boys” too, they are just not traditional pop Stan twitter and the whole discussing around pop music online is overwhelmingly made of, lets be real, gay men. And, for some reason, male artists’ imagery and their references (which is usually very masculine) don’t really appeal to gay men. Look at The Weeknd’s and Travis Scott’s visuals and aesthetics… (and in fact, the majority of fans of male artists are usually women) And now, with the death of monoculture and everyone living inside their bubbles, people can easily ignore stuff they dont care about. Which is why I think a lot of people in this stan/pop music online universe don’t really know, for example, that Benson Boone is one of the biggest new stars of the year.
I think gen z artists as a whole are pretty boring, I'm not really invested in these popstars, even with Sabrina and Chappell, It's like I've seen it before. Both talented but nothing really new or fresh. Male popstars aren't a thing because, well, none of them wanna be popstars, most of them wanna be rappers, especially the white men for some reason. Gen Z as a whole aren't doing nothing new, just nostalgia bait, as VMAS last night, nothing new. Also one big factor people seem to miss the the parasocial relationship aspect of it. i feel like, when harry styles dipped after love on tour ended, we got a decline of male pop stars that weren’t just 2010s hit makers. i feel like the emerging pop boys could be troye sivan, omar apollo, conan gray, or steve lacy, but most male stars are already in rap or country music. plus, we’re getting more of its boy band spirit from k-pop than we’ve had from america so far

Not everyone is Janet, Michael, Normani, Britney, etc… I can think of a few who (maybe hot take) really can’t dance and didn’t really try. Artists like Prince or Mariah didn’t dance lol and imo Whitney couldn’t dance and that doesn’t take away from the fact that she was IT 💛
As someone who is in the K-Pop community as well, I feel there’s some correlation between the western and Asian fandoms here. The male stars in K-Pop have huge legions of female fans, and they are devoted to them. As for female K-Pop stars, it’s not about trying to get the loyal fanbase but more about a song that hits mainstream popularity. This hits a wider demographic and its perceived that the male stars do not capture as large of an audience. Side note, I would personally argue that it’s more to do with fragile males being afraid to like male stars for the fear of being labeled as “gay”. As a gay male myself, I think that might have something to do with why female stars hit a wider popularity and male pop stars struggle to achieve a broader fanbase unless they put out what’s considered a more “masculine” sound like rock or rap.

Personally, I would LOVE to see more pop boys getting more success. Im a big rock and punk fan, too, so I'm a big fan of My Chemical Romance, and I also think they could have been mentioned here because they were considered pop back in the early 2000s. Pop punk is like a whole nother can of worms, but thats my favorite genre of music for sure. I would love love love to see more women and Queer folks take the stage in pop punk and in pop in general. I love that Gay male pop stars and now Gay Female pop stars are seeing so much mainstream success. I would love to see Trans and Queer men and women and nonbinary peeps making waves in pop punk ofc, but I know we have a long way to go, especially cause there are hardly any female pop punk stars other than Paramore, and now Meet Me @ The Altar.
Did someone ask for a male popstar? I've got an answer for you, K-Pop and J-Pop. Artists I would highly recommend are: Taeyong and his albums "Shalala", and "TAP', Jaehyun of NCT with his album "J", and Fujii Kaze from Japan. There's a plenty of male pop stars out there but you have to really look.

I’ve been an omar apollo lover/fan for 5 years now and even though he’s blown up a bit, I would still consider him very underrated/not as well known as he should be, which is probably what plays into his low ticket sales. I may be wrong but I think pop music especially in the 22+ age category is mostly consumed by women? Even the massive success of 1D and Justin Bieber can be attributed to how they were targeted towards young girls. So somehow Pop has become a genre for the girls, or with artists like Lady Gaga/Beyoncé who are loved by queer fans, 'for the gays'. No pop artist is really making music for boys/men, except the Weeknd/Bruno Mars/Ed Sheeran who aren't really marketed as "popstars". Even Post Malone who dabbled alot in Pop has shifted to Country. I just think there is some feminine connotation to Pop, if you ask any hetero cis male (young or old) what their favourite genre of music is, I'm not sure how openly or proudly they will declare "pop" as one of them. Pop music lovers are considered "normies" - very few people take Pop seriously as a genre (once again very misogynistic). This could be off base, but I think that's why there are no men in Pop on the rise, because hetero cis men don't prefer Pop music or contribute to the merch/tour/record sales aspect much.
My theory is that we're in a place where we're going from what gen z used to obsess over to what the new gen is obsessing over. Pop stars gen z we're used to seeing are kinda slowing down. They're kinda taking a break from the industry.

*1.The impact of Hip-Hop. 2. "Pop" being a dirty word to male acts (& their male fanbases). 3. Male pop stars trying their best to sell to a (straight) male listenership and not be labelled "for the girls".* Rappers were already seen as cooler and more masculine than singers, and had bigger male fanbases, so once the rappers started singing themselves, it altered the game. Many singers in the 2010's fused a Hip-Hop/Urban aesthetic into their Pop music, or marketed themselves with Hip-Hop production or styling, while male pop stars going the conventional route were labelled "corny" & "for the girls" - which is how many young men & boys dismiss K-pop today for clinging to dated Pop formulas.
Two of the biggest popstars of the last decade: The Weeknd & Post Malone, both used hip-hop as an ingredient in their pop music. Post Malone has the most diamond selling singles : 20x Platinum “Sunflower", “White Iverson,” “Congratulations,” “I Fall Apart,” “rockstar,” “Psycho,” “Better Now,” and “Circles” with a huge (straight) *male* fanbase. He's undoubtedly a massive pop star, but people don't think of Posty as "the quintessential male popstar" because they don't realise how much artists like him and The Weeknd have reshaped male pop stardom to make it work _for them._ The fact imuRgency didn't mention Post Malone by name in this video, proves my point. Maybe he doesn't even think of PM as a male pop star, and that's by design.
There aren't as many male pop stars, because they don't wish to be labelled "Pop" in the first place, and when you do, it's almost taken as a pejorative. @@Tarriq I agree about Drake, he’s pretty much equal parts rapper, equal parts Pop star. He literally had a song called “Pop Star”. And once Drake slow jam melodic raps became a viable alternative to listening to r&b crooners, male R&B vocalists took a hit. Why listen to an actual male r&B vocalist when you can just put on some Drake - two birds one stone. That did a lot of damage to r&b’s commerical viability in the 2010’s imo and they tried to compensate by adopting more hip-hop aesthetics themselves and delving into trap production, which meant r&b became indistinguishable from melodic hip-hop and lost its identity.

This really struck me watching the Usher tribute at the BET awards with almost all women performing (and Childish Gambino, to your point about the rappers being the singers). I feel like for a tribute you want younger acts that would have been looking up to the person being tributed. When I tried to think of guys who could do an Usher type act to one of his songs that would be good and that people want to see perform at the BET awards, the people I could name are more Ushers contemporaries than his heirs.
The key is that with current Pop being mostly marketed towards straight women and gay men, the standard for Pop girls is to be aspirational/relatable while Pop boys have to be desirable.
Except atm, relatable is the name of the game in the arts industry in general, so the Pop girl marketing tactic just works a lot better.
Also explains why Ed Sheeran is never seen as a big culture force despite being very popular/influential. He doesnt really fit the typical desirable pop boy archetype.

Generally speaking, tides change all the time. Right now, the music industry is definitely at a point where there aren't a lot of popular male pop artists. But times will change and it'll eventually even out

justin bieber is definitely this century’s/generation’s main pop boy. i think purpose era especially was definitely a learning experience for everyone, in terms of what success to aim for but also what limits to set as an artist and a person. i think he’s definitely earned his right to slow down his career after all he has accomplished but even when he has been active in the past few years, he has still been breaking and setting records. he is still someone who can influence the pop landscape and i think it’s crazy that a lot of people wouldn’t consider him a current male pop boy

Seeing Omar on here is such a surprise to me. In my head he’s still a small indie artist. I saw him for the first time in 2018 and the tickets were only like $20 at a small venue. I don’t think he makes conventional pop music but I can see how his newer stuff would appeal to a wider audience. I’m happy for him though and can definitely see him getting bigger!

I think Conan Gray has the potential to rise up, but probably will be one of those artists with a cult following that slowly grows with each release. I became a stan of his this year after his most recent release. He has similar music in style to people like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift (Singer/songwriter, diaristic "relatable" lyrics), and more recently Dua Lipa and The Weekend (80s revival), and has proven that he can and will change up his musical style to fit what he's interested in to grow as an artist. He has the distinct eras thematically and visually, changes his personal look (not drastically but he still does) with every era, and has been adding in more in terms of dancing and performance as well. And has been relatively open about his life and struggles both in his music and publicly given that he basically grew up on RUclips similarly to Troye Sivan. I do agree though that the ability for male stars to keep their privacy a bit more means less people know about them, they aren't in headlines as often for "controversy" which unfortunately does drive the attention economy. Beiber and Harry Styles remain relevant generally because their personal life is constantly being speculated and talked about. For Conan, he hasn't had any big controversies and he hasn't publically dated anyone high profile (he continues to go out of his way to not reveal the other famous person who he did date last year). Additionally, while he is queer, he very adamantly refuses to label himself, and makes everything he says and writes about in relation to romance/relationships gender neutral. So unlike Harry Styles, who is often put on blast for "queerbaiting", Conan maintains a loyal queer audience and avoids the speculation, but at the same time he isn't so blatantly open about his queerness that it draws the shock value like Lil Nas X or Sam Smith or to a lesser extent, Chappell. He generally only ends up in headlines if it's in relation to Olivia Rodrigo since they're close friends, but at the same time he also refuses to piggy-back off his friends fame by collabing. He's often not included in the pop dialogue (as a whole or for the men in general) but I do think in some ways that may be purposeful. After having your whole life online since you were 9, I think he values not being as big as some other main pop acts because he wants to maintain a level of privacy and autonomy not afforded to larger acts (we all know how hard it's been for Chappell and many others). Hell, I only learned about him/his music outside of his Met Gala looks because my irl friend recommended one of his newer singles to me, and then his new album knocked my socks off when it dropped. He has a loyal and dedicated fan base that sell out arenas like MSG and the Kia Forum for him, and he definitely has the talent in spades, but I RARELY see people talking about him online outside of his niche small fan circles on Twitter and Reddit (maybe it's on purpose, maybe his fans want to gatekeep, idk). So, I see him getting bigger, but maybe not so big. Sorry for the essay, I just rarely see Conan talked about anywhere and this is my way of spreading the message :)
As a Conan Stan I feel like his current state is optimum where he is able to sell out 20k+ venues like MSG and maintaining a level of privacy and not much of the weird fame disadvantages. I do see him rise up in like 5 years when the GP wants to catch up to the lore or feel FOMO for the tight knit audience he has, sort of like how Taylor Swift shot to even higher levels post folklore and able to maintain that level of fame because of the lore and how her fandom is kind of "if you know you know" and GP was eventually sucked into being deep Swifties.

Guys and girls are expected to maintain weight, have parasocial relationships of international scale (see Weverse,Bubble) and have a new era every 6mos-1yr. Female artists have simply raised our expectations across different levels & created a formula that most male artists can't replicate. In particular, I feel like theres 3 main factors pop girls posses that only certain male artists have: a dedicated fandom, an interesting artistic image (i.e eras), & strong music that fans & non-fans can both enjoy. The only male artist I feel checks off all those boxes is the Weeknd. I consider Bruno Mars to be a rare exception bc everyone love his music (so basically he's the Adele of male artists).
Also I can kinda imagine certain pop boys with cult followings (i.e Troye & Conan)experiancing a similar career trajectory as Charli & Sabrina in the next few years, just give them time to cook.

did you just say the pop girls are creating strong songs? most female pop stars don't even write or produce their own hit records. Plus, these aren't unanimous hit singles, they're just touted by their extremely small, but dedicated fan bases. Y'all live in echo chambers/bubbles. Stan culuture can definitly help the sucess of a song/album but that doesn't guarentee if a song is a hit (depending on how you classify what makes a hit). For example, Ariana Grande's "Yes and?" might've done well on the charts but many fans & non-fans alike consider it to be one of her worst songs. By contrast, we're seeing some artists who've been in the industry for years despite being praised by music critics finally experiancing sucsess. Sabrina, for example, has been in the industry for over a decade but Espresso is her first real hit & is considered "the song of the summer" in several countries. Considering how Sabrina used to have a very small fandom & was even the victim of a hate train, it's a huge 180 for her. Perosnally, I'm not a fan of the song & consider myself to be a casual listener of Sabrina but I can see this song being on a "greatest hits of the 2020s" in a few years.
As for the songwriting, I think we're starting to see a bit of a shift there. There's a larger expectation for singers to contribute to the songwriting & some have become well known for being very invovled in it like Billie, who very rarely works with other writers & producers (besides her brother).
i think there are plenty of major male pop stars but because they are men not extremely young like prime JB we don't consider them pop stars. expamples: JB, the weekend, bruno mars, harry styles, Jungkook, Ed Sheeran (formally drake)9 these are still major heavy hitters but not considered pop stars, also i dont think male pop stars had to follow the pop star arcs that female pop stars had to, for example that stupid ass color theory, or hair theory

Personally, I'm a big fan of the pop boys, especially the queer pop boys, and have found myself following a lot of their careers consistently for years, even going on a decade now for a few of them. Troye's album was one of the best western pop releases last year, Conan's album has been on infinite repeat this year, Lil Nas X always kills it, and Lauv has a super catchy discography. I recently got into Omar Apollo's recent album this year too though I personally don't know if I would classify his style of music as "pop" but that's neither here nor there.
And don't even get me started on BTS (who I also consider queer pop boys but that's another nuanced convo for another time). They have been, are, and will remain un-fucking-stoppable and I don't think the pop scene will be prepared for their inevitable takeover once they make their comeback in late 2025/early 2026.

Korea is still a largely conservative Christian country, gay marriage is still illegal and openly queer people are often stealthily blacklisted in Korea media, so you will not find any direct evidence of them coming out not will they likely do so any time soon considering they're in the military which will imprison people for same sex activity.
That being said:
RM- has used male and female pronouns when referring to romantic partners in his music, constantly is highlighting queer artists on his socials, has been the most outspoken about his support of the community and is speculated to have had an ex-boyfriend sometime in the past.
Suga- most likely bi/pan, has probably come the closest to openly stating it. Is very blatant even back in 2014 that he does not care about the gender of his partner but that the vibe is right. Also describes romantic partners in his music with male and female pronouns.
Jin- Nothing as big as some of the others, however he is pretty open about his love for traditionally feminine clothes, colors and more.
J-Hope- also not much for him, however he has a lot of friends and connections in SK's queer and trans community
Jimin- has talked openly about how he doesn't align with traditional male gender presentation and although he uses he/him pronouns a lot of his works heavily suggest a preference for androgyny and gender-nonconformance. He also has openly expressed attraction towards men and women though has not stated directly.
Taehyung- is also heavily involved in the SK queer community as well as queer communities abroad. Has also expressed attraction towards men and women and is often seen sporting clothing and jewelry and art specifically from queer designers, etc.
Jungkook- also not as blatant as some of the other members, however he's expressed attraction towards men and women (and has been open about once having a crush on Namjoon(RM) when they were trainees) and also chooses to express himself physically in gender noncoforming ways as well.
RM also stated in an English interview that none of the members had a gf or a bf at the time, which implies that at least a few of the members would not mind dating men or nb folx.
Now I realize none of this can really be taken as "proof" nor should it be used to qualify whether or not they can make queer art however BTS has a massive queer fanbase for a reason and I think that's because many queer ARMY identify with the way they've chosen to express queerness throughout their career.
Kpop idols often do some same-sex flirty stuff as "fanservice" ("kpop idols being gay" will probably deliver some compilations demonstrating what I mean) but it also wouldn't shock me if half of BTS was actually queer. Their "love yourself" era (2017/2018) is the most queer-coded in my opinion (title tracks: DNA, Fake Love, Idol). But considering how conservative the Asian market is and that they are still their company's main cash cow despite being on military service hiatus: We might not find out for the next 5+ years or something.

I also feel like BTS member(s) might be queer, simple statistic and at least one of them would fall into ;) Their openness about supporting queer people and talking about artist they like (Jungkook talking many times about Troye Sivan early in career come to my mind first) seems like they at least are open minded (really hope it isn't calculated publicity stunt). Seeing how close members are I wouldn't be surprised if one/some of them is queer and others talk about support also for them to know they are there for them (hope that make sense as it is early Monday morning, I am commuting to work and my English is more than little rusty)

As a shawn mendes stan (i was here for the latter half of his peak in like 2018/2019) I've been in and out of SO MANY music phases (K-pop, only female artists for like ages, etc.) . Lately though, I've been obsessed with a lot of male artists like Hozier, Benson Boone, Noah Kahan, Shawn Mendes (again because our boy is coming back!!!), Myles Smith, David Kushner, etc. etc. I noticed that despite the absolute BANGERS these guys are pushing out, they really aren't getting as talked about as alot of other great female artists! And while I do ofc love to see women on top, I can't help but feel a little sad that the male artists i really like aren't getting the same recognition. I do definitely agree that a big part of it is that women are analyzed more in the public eye, and therefore more likely to have "scandals" and be pressured to be the face of EVERYTHING, while people kinda only care about male artists for their music and not personal life (usually). It'd be nice if we could find a balance that'd give female artists more privacy and maybe some more visibility to the male artists coming up with great music!
Though people may only sort of know a few songs from Troye Sivan in America (I'm also American), I've seen him have a LOT of international recognition. His name pops up in the Kpop and Thai BL community often. I've been a Troye fan since his early RUclipsr days and I just love that people around the world know his name and body of work 🥰

I feel like male popstars such as Harry Styles lasts longer because he's appealing more for the female gaze rather than the hyper-masculine gaze. Someone else mentioned this but the last few major male pop stars have been Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson. I would say Harry styles but I don’t think so personally. It seems like a lot of the males in each genre have been disposed of , and only appear periodically. Males in pop and Rnb ( speaking in a mainstream sense) don’t seem to be able to have major demographics anymore. Other than rap , the females are definitely dominating the industry. But we’re getting a new generation of music, I can definitely see artists like grent Perez making it big for the long run.

Yes, I agreeee! I was trying to say this, very inarticulately, on another YT video about authenticity in music. The video was breaking down how Katy Perry's inauthentic approach to all her music is what's alienating her from connecting with fans and why she's bombing lately, and ultimately how, when you can't be real and relatable with people and show people who you really are (aka bear all) then that's what happens, and like yeah katy's flopping, but the fact that the girlies have to be 'relatable' and show their 'human' side in order to succeed or whatever is a DOUBLE STANDARD. Those same expectations are not placed on male artists/musicians. At least, not to the same degree.

Stan twitter and the whole discussing around pop music online is overwhelmingly made of, lets be real, gay men. And, for some reason, male artists’ imagery and their references (which is usually very masculine) don’t really appeal to gay men. Look at The Weeknd’s and Travis Scott’s visuals and aesthetics… (and in fact, the majority of fans of male artists are usually women) And now, with the death of monoculture and everyone living inside their bubbles, people can easily ignore stuff they dont care about. I think gen z artists as a whole are pretty boring, I'm not really invested in these popstars, even with Sabrina and Chappell, It's like I've seen it before. As someone who is in the K-Pop community as well, I feel there’s some correlation between the western and Asian fandoms here. The male stars in K-Pop have huge legions of female fans, and they are devoted to them. As for female K-Pop stars, it’s not about trying to get the loyal fanbase but more about a song that hits mainstream popularity. This hits a wider demographic and its perceived that the male stars do not capture as large of an audience. Side note, I would personally argue that it’s more to do with fragile males being afraid to like male stars for the fear of being labeled as “gay”. As a gay male myself, I think that might have something to do with why female stars hit a wider popularity and male pop stars struggle to achieve a broader fanbase unless they put out what’s considered a more “masculine” sound like rock or rap.

Im a big rock and punk fan, too, so I'm a big fan of My Chemical Romance, and I also think they could have been mentioned here because they were considered pop back in the early 2000s. Pop punk is like a whole nother can of worms, but thats my favorite genre of music for sure. I would love love love to see more women and Queer folks take the stage in pop punk and in pop in general. I love that Gay male pop stars and now Gay Female pop stars are seeing so much mainstream success. I would love to see Trans and Queer men and women and nonbinary peeps making waves in pop punk ofc, but I know we have a long way to go, especially cause there are hardly any female pop punk stars other than Paramore, and now Meet Me @ The Altar.

I think artists are tired of having to drop music every five minutes to stay relevant.
I’ve been an omar apollo lover/fan for 5 years now and even though he’s blown up a bit, I would still consider him very underrated/not as well known as he should be, which is probably what plays into his low ticket sales.
Also as a fan from australia, I’m pretty sure he almost sold out his AU leg of the tour, so it might just be his more popular outside of the US?
Also Prince was a Perfect example of A Artist who evolved over Time with different eras. Thats the key to having a long career, but you must stay humble as well for Long term

Good point. It`s a way to convince non-fans, just put on a great show. I`ve heard Dua Lupa on the radio, and it`s fine...but then I saw a gig of hers (on tv) and wow...! You listen to the guys, and it`s okay, and then you see a show...and that`s okay too. No added value.

I may be wrong but I think pop music especially in the 22+ age category is mostly consumed by women? Even the massive success of 1D and Justin Bieber can be attributed to how they were targeted towards young girls. So somehow Pop has become a genre for the girls, or with artists like Lady Gaga/Beyoncé who are loved by queer fans, 'for the gays'. No pop artist is really making music for boys/men, except the Weeknd/Bruno Mars/Ed Sheeran who aren't really marketed as "popstars". Even Post Malone who dabbled alot in Pop has shifted to Country. I just think there is some feminine connotation to Pop, if you ask any hetero cis male (young or old) what their favourite genre of music is, I'm not sure how openly or proudly they will declare "pop" as one of them. Pop music lovers are considered "normies" - very few people take Pop seriously as a genre (once again very misogynistic). This could be off base, but I think that's why there are no men in Pop on the rise, because hetero cis men don't prefer Pop music or contribute to the merch/tour/record sales aspect much.

My theory is that we're in a place where we're going from what gen z used to obsess over to what the new gen is obsessing over. Pop stars gen z we're used to seeing are kinda slowing down. They're kinda taking a break from the industry.
Bruno has the potential but I don’t know what’s happening to him lately honestly, he seemed over it . And the weekend has a great voice with cool branding but he is being repetitive lately. To me with the death of Michael Jackson there no one came close to him (singing/ performance)🤷🏽♀️
