SAILING The BIG LAP, around Australia... from Southport to Eden...Ep38

- We summarise our sailing for the last year and outline our plans for 2021. We will sail around Australia, 7500nm (15,000km) from Southport to Southport via the Great Australian Bight, the Western Australian coast including the magnificent Kimberley Coast, Darwin, Torres Strait and back to Southport. For various reasons including cyclones and broken windows on our Leopard, we left later than the planned January. We set out on 12th February from Southport, getting into Coffs Harbour after a pleasant 160nm with good sailing conditions. We had to wait about 10 days for good enough weather to continue to Sydney because there was a lot of southerly wind and unsettled conditions. Being in the perfectly situated Coffs Harbour Marina, we were able to pop over to the clean surf beach on the other side of the rock wall and enjoy fabulous surfing. Once in Sydney we spent just a day walking around Rose Bay where we were anchored with@SailingZatara and @TheCruisingKiwis , soaking up the spectacular harbour views. Then a day later we set out for Eden and had good conditions again, enabling us to ditch our back up plans of stopping at Jervis Bay, although it would have been a lovely anchorage. Once in Eden we waited another week for good weather. We loved Eden and enjoyed its many delights and spectacular harbour. We caught squid, surfed and walked on the beach and on the lovely walking trail around the headlands of Eden. The Whale Museum was very interesting even though we don't like the idea of whaling. We really enjoyed reading the story of Old Tom, the whale that interacted in amazing way with the whalers. He even circuled around the spot where a whaler was underwater after falling from his whaling boat. So he was loved and revered by all the whalers at Twofold Bay and so his skeleton is displayed in the museum.
Beautiful boat. Thanks for posting.
HI Tom. Thanks for that and thanks for watching!
My heart Longs for the open sea, Shes a beautiful vessel, I hope one day to learn to sail and some how convince my wife to give it a go. Every opertunity we get to go out on a yacht /cat/vessel She loves it. I hope one day to be able to experience some of what youve been able to see.

Dont leave it to long, jump in.
Fantastic scenery. Captured Eden beautifully.
Thanks Cruising Kiwis - yes Eden is a sailor's paradise with clear water, protected anchorages, white beaches and great forest walks...and a gentle surf to practise you're surfing moves! Haha
Loving the videos! Would love to see a tour of your yacht and how u guys have set it all up. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work. Huge inspiration! cheers from Boston,MA. USA
Thanks Jeffrey. Good idea. We will do a tour of our boat and explain what after market stuff we've put on.
Loved this episode. Great going you guys.
Thanks Marion. Great to catch up and share experiences with you both. xx
Hi Guys, looks like you're living the dream. Keep up the great work.
we sure are, we really are amazed at what we have done in a short time sailing. are you a sailor?
Awesome video, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Wow did not expect those bodysurfing shots 💥💞
she loves it
Great video russ and margi. Looks beautiful. Your tender launch is cool. I like it.
Thanks Guy. The tender launch is nice and easy and we really love it too. We do get quite a few nice comments about it.
Great video
thanks Wally, it has been a great adventure so far.
Great stuff! Just FYI, the background music is nice for a few minutes at the start, but becomes distracting after a while, especially when trying to listen to narration or someone talking.
Thanks Don. We'll work on that. Please let us know if our next one is improved.
Windy is the best weather app i have found i use it all the time on land and out on the tide... I fish often and drive a truck with high sided box its great here in New Zealand ... Great video and one i want to do as we have children in Perth.... Thanks again.... Cheers John
Yes we use Windy all the time too. Great easy app on the phone. But Predictwind Offshore is an absolute must for any offshore passages or passages where you don't have internet. We're very excited about sailing around Australia - its been amazing so far.
Windy is good but PredictWind is better. Amongst several innovations It has a split screen showing two models at the same time if using a tablet. And it's a NZ made product!
@@TheCruisingKiwis predict wind is without doubt a must have tool when crusing
Great video, I am sharing it for you.
Thanks Steve. Really appreciate your help and your support. Hope we keep you entertained!
Subscribed. Great video!
thanks so much , was a fantastic trip to do circumnavigating Australia. What an amazing country.
Now that’s a way to do the lap, done it a few times now by road, love to see Australia via the sea
Thanks Sandra , yes this really has been a huge highlight in our lives so far and we are only just half way round . it sure is a big wild country!
@@CruisingSunrise can’t wait for the Kimberley’s!
@@gebi4pejo1 thats the main reason we bought a boat , do sail the Kimberleys. So yes we are very excited.
Height in the bight brings se wind along the east coast and gulf of carpenter
not quite sure what you mean, sorry
@@CruisingSunrise it's ok you are traveling west / the Leuwin current flows south down the west Australian coast / looks like you are enjoying mild weather / hope the electro weather man stays accurate for you .
@@ventura1893 thanks
I owe you two a debt. I'm in Brisbane right now and wondering how and when to set off for Indonesia. Under or over Australia. I consulted youtube and you two have exactly answered my question. Under I go. Thanks a trillion
glad we have helped, try and cross the bight by the end of march.
@@CruisingSunrise I'm from Port Lincoln and originally planned to sail west from there. However by the time I was ready to leave there the summer weather patterns had destabilized and I couldn't cross the Bight. Traveling East has been good practice and getting to know the boat. So now west as originally intended.
You're video's are great by the way. And very instructive for sailing these parts of Australia.
❤❤❤ might see you at sea
That would be fun
I noticed your rope is fraying on your dingy lift, hope you get it fixed soon 👍
Thanks Bob. Its actually just the end of the line where its been spliced. But thanks for mentioning it - always so important to keep an eye on all the lines. I know it looks bad.
Congrats on making 1,000 subscribers (recommendation from Zatara)! Great videos. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks Owen. We're pretty excited too about making 1,000 subscribers. Thank you very much for subscribing - hope to keep you entertained!!
Give the jelly a haircut
Looks great! A bit much music though.
im working hard on the sound , thanks for the feedback
I enjoyed your musical interlude with the piano. It was almost like listening to the ABC Music programme with Margaret Throsby, but unfortunately there was a couple of very strong interruptions from two people in the audience (sitting behind me I think), and they seemed to be chattering about a boat or something.
To funny Dav!! i hope I get better
@@CruisingSunrise I'm sure you will with your positive attitude and good sense of humour 😉
cobber ya need a fluffy cat on the mic. how much solar ya got ?
Thanks Simon. Good point. We'll see if we can get one. We've got 2,000 watts of solar and a 5kw inverter. And 1,000 amps of lithium batteries. Could actually use a bit more solar but we're pretty happy with our set up.
@@CruisingSunrise is that 1000ah of lithium at 12v? Do you find that’s enough ? Watching from waiheke island.
@@simonhantler8062 yes thats right , it is enough most of the time but we did find in NZ as winter kicked in and the days got shorter more battery would have been good
Well done but it's not a lap without Tassie
i know and we really wanted to explore tassie but will have to be next time
New subscriber per referral to you by Zartara! Buy Keith a beer from me and you I guess. 🤣
No way!! I gave him free ink , its aparently very good for your skin haha
Motor sailing
Is that an oxymoron?
Does sailing require a sail?
More of life's mysteries!
I wish you fair winds
Cheers Gray Brisbane
I’d avoid Dan Andrews land at all costs! I’d rather sink than step foot into such a place.
