Hey there again from the Oil Patch in Central WY, USA! When it comes to memory, videos, and post production work, I HIGHLY recommend having just a small tablet (7" will do) with a Voice to Text app on while you're filming for a Running Audio Context Recording. The small tablet can be secured to you via sling, clip, etc. However, if that is too cumbersome for you, a small digital Voice Recorder works wonders: they can be as small as a Bic Lighter, or about the size of a Credit Card: models can be 'self contained' (ie, a fixed Gb size), or they can have a Micro SD (xD) slot for easy peasy swap out and Gb size modulation. Both styles can come with either a Micro USB C port OR a standard USB porting for Direct Connect. The one which is less hassle when it comes to 'losing things' is the Self Contained model.....NO itty bitty xD cards to go missing with TWO WEEKS or more of work on it, which simply is GONE into the 'ether'! I would advise you to go with the Self Contained model because of how busy you are, how much other stuff you have aboard that can disappear, and generally provide you with one LESS thing to go south on you! Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY, USA
CS lister's are phenomenal old engines and there are still a substantial number running shearing plants and generators throughout the outback, I owned one for a number of years myself. They are so reliable that they are still produced under license in India by Mahindra corporation.
Where you stayed in Foster is where 'Wollamiah' came from, she lived up on a pontoon there. Not to mention any brands but went with the GME - VHF mounted and hand held in the end, all in.
Love the videos at sea! You could point the camera out the front window and I would watch for hours I'm bring an old fiberglass 17' Galaxy back to life with and io 120 hp mercruiser. Plan on exploring the Ohio river and inland lakes of Ohio US. Your work on Renko is an inspiration to keep chugging along. Thanks for the videos.
Travel is different from fixing things. Makes perfect sense that the videos would flow differently as well. Having watched all your work on Renko, it must be amazing to finally have it out on the water. 👍
Yes to vlog style. Why not change up the format a bit to match your current activities? If it turns out that you don't like the new content, you can always go back to "old style". I'm enjoying going along for the ride!
@@DangarMarine have you thought of changing out that trawling prop for one that give you better cruise speeds if you planning on going long trip like this? Save fuel and get there a bit faster.
A vlog style upload would be great for those of us who start getting twitchy after the five to 6 day mark. Quick to make, intro - couple of scenes around the deck if underway - plug the Raymarine with your current location - shots of the coastline - outro job done. Just watching the waves come over the bow of Renko as it ploughs through the swell is mesmerising could easily watch an hour or so of that. The possibilities are endless. (the oysters from Wallis Lake are sweet and juicy shucked while you wait.)
I was thinking the same thing Johnny, make these have a very quick intro, just get into the meat of what's happening that day and then wrap up. Will also do a longer video next time we are offshore. I watched a video once that was the entire train trip from Bergen to Onslow. Very relaxing! :)
What a great way to start the day. 8 seconds in and I’ve already noticed the speaker in the cup holder and cameras on the raymarine. As always heaps of new information to learn. I need to go find out more about the sectored lights that got you through the break walls. Happy with absolutely any content while you’re on the great coastal adventure. Loving the journey.
Hi Stu, you can go from Southport to Morton bay behind Stradbroke Island ,nice calm water cruise through the islands. I agree, the landy would be pretty cool with a Detroit.
I have to believe that the auto pilot improves safety dramatically. No more staring at the compass, now you can scan the sea for what should, and shouldn't be there.
You can keep a small voice recorder like you use for lectures. One with a time stamp for the audio files. When you see something or want to note a point or interesting topic you can do it right then or at least the idea right then. When you go back you can speed listen and pick the voice notes that still make sense. Any live video capture en route will have the same time stamp so you can key to that moment instead of watching hours of vid hoping to remember what you saw when... And what pithy comment or bit of true brilliance we always seem to forget a minute later.
That was so much better, especially the maps and the different views. I hope you do break it down into smaller clips, it makes it more interesting. Thanks for all your time and effort.
Hey mate, great videos. I have taken on a old ex timber trawler in NZ with a Lister JP6. I have very little experience with engines but i'm at home on the sea having grown up on mussel farms. Wish me luck i'm going to need it. Keep it up

A suggestion for you. On that murphy gauge you installed, fill the line with light hydraulic oil. It will make it read faster. This is used on aircraft with remote sensor gauge senders or long gauge lines. Also, be sure there is a small office in the line at the engine so that if your line should break or chafe through it limits the speed that you pump oil out of the engine. It will give you a better chance to notice before you destroy your engine from oil loss.
I've been rebuilding a 15 foot fiberglass boat for 1 and a half years now with the soul purpose of traveling from Brisbane to Moreton island. Hopefully I'll be finished in time o see Renko around Moreton, from the water!

Stu I suggest that no matter how much someone with the requisite good taste may appreciate the purr of a healthy Detroit in good voice, some heavy duty soundproofing is indicated for your vessel's engine bay? Perhaps at least the underside of the relevant deck area and forward bulkhead? A Detroit sounds great from the front of a greyhound bus or whatever, but evidently they can be a bit overwhelming from the pilothouse of a loudly resonant steel vessel perched virtually on top of one!
