What an absolute blast watching you play this blind. Thanks for posting the stream VOD to youtube. Absolutely wonderful playthrough. Pretty cool that you found some of the more obtuse stuff right away.
I think there are 8 possible endings. If you kill the dog you lock yourself out of the best possible ending. You missed a few collectibles. As you collect them it modifies the game and eventually you end up on the good endings path. But happiness must be fought for.
You played really well. I couldn't help but think you had either played before or read a walkthrough, and then acted for the stream, because of some of the moves you made. But I am now inclined to think this was all played cold, and in that regard, you played outstanding. The most disappointed I was was when you chose to go down the vortex while in the bathhouse. That seemed like an obvious error. And then you didn't choose the yellow slide, but that I could understand - it's just that everyone freaking goes for the hidden passage behind the cabinet in the pool table room but you are the first one I saw choose that WHILE YOU HAD THE YELLOW SLIDE CHOICE. The game was leading you, and you went away from that! Crazy! I hope you got a chance to complete the game and find the best ending.
Not gonna lie - that's the feel I had about JSE's playthrough. I did read about this and probably picked up a few things but latest from a few min before the first mirror passing, it's all real :) When I find stuff like that I try to stop myself from reading up on it early to not spoil myself because yeah, most streamers do overplay reactions a bit, but acting surprised on stream when you basically know exactly what's coming is a bit meh. Might play it again, but now there won't be any surprises as I've watched and read up on all of it :D EDIT: Actually no, rewatching it, I "knew about it" (but not every detail of what happens) up until the first enemy reset in the house, probably.
@@thatguyStrike Ya, it would be extremely hard not to know at least what you are saying you knew, because how else would you interest truly be piqued unless you saw something! The hype around myhouse is so dumb. Myhouse fanatics who've never heard of Doom before 2023 regularly tell me it's "abandonware" and if you tell them to play Eviternity, Ancient Aliens, Auger Zenith or any other recently released, visually and technically impressive megawads they just say "no those are grandpa games." Only time will tell but I wouldn't be surprised if myhouse was a long-term net negative for the longevity of Doom. It's like when your favorite band releases a record that's kinda soft and expands the fanbase but then you go to one of their shows and you don't fit the crowd anymore and the band's popularity slides as the new fans move on to the next trend.
"Saved" it? From what? The Doom community has been going strong for 30 years now, with yearly Cacowards going to the best WADs that are still being made constantly
It even is for a German mothertongue person, which they never, ever tire of telling us. Post a Swiss German video on a social media platform and there will be AT LEAST one German dude poking fun at the language lmao
To answer the clickbaity question, maybe? As far as I know this requires GZdoom and won't take no for an answer. (not even LZdoom) If anything, what this wad's popularity will do is cause even more gzdoom-only wads to be made. Gzdoom is already the number one source port, and if it gets any higher and wads start requiring it more, that'll push it into de-facto monopoly territory. Now, GZDoom is FOSS. If it really becomes basically a requirement for new wads, people could fork it, or maybe make other engines compatible. But also, GZDoom is barely even the Doom engine anymore. They re-wrote so much of the code that its basically a Ship-of-Theseus situation. It doesn't even use fixed-point anymore, the physics uses floating point. This also breaks old demos, and its banned for speedrunning. The system requirements are also pretty high, it needs opengl3 or vulkan. LZdoom (the previous solution to this) has been discontinued. And I'm not sure what can be done about that. So if anything, this wad could destroy doom map making, in a way.
Also, trying to shoehorn all these advanced features into doom kinda sounds like the wrong thing to do. *Modern* game engines would shrug this game off. Using less CPU and RAM all the while. If you want to do the crazy stuff, that's what you should be doing. It's cool to see "doom" do this stuff (and the wad kinda relies on the shock value of that), but if you need a source port that is barely doom, is it *really* doom?
I wouldn't be this dramatic. For years now the Doom community has been split between (G)ZDoom and PRBoom (and more recently, DSDA-Doom) mapping, with both sides well aware of issues and limitations of their preferred port. Also, if anything "saved" Doom, that would be Doom 2016, the growing interest in old-school shooters and COVID.
