    You know what might be interesting to see: How were royal children raised? How often could they see and interact with their parents instead of their minders? What were they expected to learn and what was available to do when they were allowed to play? What were the differences between how a prince was raised as opposed to a princess, or children born from an empress as opposed to a concubine or a lowly servant who happened to get pregnant? What about their educations? What happened if a prince or princess didn't fit the mold? What about discipline (how exactly do you punish a crown prince, anyway? Or a child emperor)? What changed about imperial child rearing across the dynasties? I'm just curious to know more about the lifestyles of the Emperors' children, since you haven't really touched on that subject too much yet.

      Chinese emperor has too many sons and daughters that only some of them can actually see their father. Different women (emperor has the right to mate every woman in China) give different babies, it really depends on the class of the baby's mother and the baby's gender to decide the fate of the baby. And also because almost every wife wanted their baby to become next empire so the wives tend to kill the sons of each others. Sons and daughters usually can't see the emperor but can see their mother everyday. For talented or high class sons, they will get very high education. In ancient China the more ignorant a woman is the more morally right she is. So the daughters of emperor's are usually uneducated. However, some daughters of the minions of the emperor can get very high education because sometimes they are also the teachers of the prince and other sons of the emperor. Punishment due to how bad the mistake is, or sometimes it's not their fault but their mother side relatives made some big oops, yeah the prince can be fired to a normal son or even get killed. As I said the emperors has too many offspring, so killing one or two is not a problem for him. There are a lot of Ancient Chinese drama show if you really want to watch and there are much more details in it. like 。。。

      Holy crap, a fantasy series based on Chinese court dynamics would completely blow Game of Thrones out of the water. European intrigue was usually tempered by the involvement of the Roman Catholic Church, which was more than just a religious body- they were a huge socioeconomic force to be contended with. And they had a vested interest in keeping their flock- Europe- from destroying itself. China... had no such body. Worship was directed to the Emperor rather than an Almighty, which would only make competition for the throne more ferocious. Confucianism helped to make life more orderly, but still. China is a freaking huge country, so there you found greater poverty, greater wretched excess, and greater competition for a single goal: The Dragon Throne.

      Dan Zhao Very well summarized! I have seen so many historical Chinese series and am too familiar with all of that. One of the cruelest empresses was Empress Lu(Liu bang’s main wife). She killed one of the concubines and her son which made her own son sick and made him die. Karma right there! Empress CiXi was another evil empress dowager too.

    One more thing to add up: though such a huge variety offered to emperor, they can only take a pinch of each dish and pass to the next one. Coz according to imperial rule, this is forced to do to protect the emperor from being poisoned. So they can't get a chance to be fat. Not easy to be the emperor of a kingdom ha.

    Studying Chinese at San Diego State University, I had found a coffee table book about Chinese food, with lavish pictures. I showed my professor a photo of elaborate imperial food, saying, "Can you imagine eating something like that?" "Oh, I have," she smugly replied. She was from a Mandarin family in Suchow.

    I admire the Chinese who love their ancestors, and celebrate them. I admire Indians that continue their traditions
    it makes me so sad to see so many whites in america, and in europe who absolutely HATE who they are, and refuse to celebrate their ancestors.
    looks like everyone is loyal to their ancestors, except us :(

    • @GwenApMannanan
      @GwenApMannanan 7 лет назад +20

      Beautiful Oddity maybe it's because it's hard to actually celebrate your ancestors in the west when most of the traditional culture, stories, and more was destroyed by Christianity over a period of more than a thousand years where they killed off anyone with traditional knowledge, women, and rewrote histories and tales, supplanting traditional European culture with Jewish history, stories, and the Christian beliefs that came from the Catholic Church (as the Orthodox Church was mainly in Greece, Egypt, Eastern Europe, and eventually western Russian). And the Catholic Church changed things quite a bit once it was established and ran over the centuries. It was well known for wiping out ideas and old beliefs that challenged it's own for well over a thousand years.
      In a single generation the Chinese Communist Party wiped out an entire system of culture, learning, and philosophy from China that had lasted for more than 5000 years. (The Cultural Revolution under Mao) Now people raised within the CCPs walls are vastly different from their brethren who still practice traditional culture. If they can change things so much in a single generation, make an entire generation of people illiterate so they can 'simplify' the language and change the culture completely, what to you think that happens over 1000 years of a non-native religion forcing it's ways and influence over the traditional culture, stories, and beliefs of an entire continent? It's no wonder people don't feel connected to or proud of their heritage. Because many have no idea where to start to learn about their real heritage. Look at all the resurgences in interest in traditional belief systems. Like the Norse temples and Asatru practitioners, or the Druid orders, not to mention those who are drawn to other traditional systems because they have no idea how to connect with their ethnic past.

    • @bonzaihb3432
      @bonzaihb3432 7 лет назад +7

      +Gwen: well said! Another obstacle (in Germany at least): if you show interest in these old traditions and believes, you'll sooner or later get the "Nazi stamp" on you (because "traditions are bad" or whatever they come up with), that's almost certain.

    • @GwenApMannanan
      @GwenApMannanan 7 лет назад +2

      bonzai HB my family disowned me for turning away from Christianity for tradition. I had no idea that it was like that in Germany, but I know enough about history to understand why that is an issue. It's such a shame. Hopefully things will change with time.

    • @vn3138
      @vn3138 7 лет назад

      bonzai HB its always the nazis isnt it :( people are so sensitive i swear. just because you celebrate german history, doesnt make you a nazi

    • @GwenApMannanan
      @GwenApMannanan 7 лет назад +1

      Beautiful Oddity it's way more complicated than that. The Nazis went after occult knowledge and sacred relics from many spiritual traditions from all over the world. They planned to use military might and to twist sacred objects of power to their own means to control the world. So a backlash against certain traditional, occult, etc practices and values comes from that.

    It is a misnomer that being invited to an imperial banquet is something most officials feared to attend because of the food! First of all, by the time the food arrive to their tables from the far away kitchens become cold. And even if they arrived in time, there's the wait! One cannot eat first before the emperor. At the same time, time is spent toasting the emperor's virtues with wine etc. Usually, it is an hours long affair. Eating at home is so much better and enjoyable. As for daily meals, the royal family does not eat bear paws or other exotic foods. It is just really ordinary foods done in some fantastic preparation. For example, when doctors to the Empress Dowager Cixi told her that she should cut down the meats, she found the food bland and was highly displeased. They came up with an ingenious way but a most elaborate method. Thread thin slivers of pork were inserted into the stems of bean sprouts before stir frying. She found them to be acceptable. It is one of the few imperial dishes that cannot be done today. So, you won't see it in the 滿漢全席 (Manchu-Han Chinese complete banquet) menu they claimed to be the imperial menu. Imagine the time consuming way to make this. Not profitable enough for any enterprise but not for the imperial kitchen when their entire lives were spent in there.

    I think that they could have been more overweight than they were depicted in paintings of them, since paintings aren't photographs and what painter is going to paint a fat King fat? Pretty sure if you did that your end wouldn't be a good one. Like how history a lot of times was written by the victor. You can go from historically being written about in loving terms only to have your very image turned into a monster once you lose that power once the writer of that history has a new master to serve.

    • @littlebluedolphin
      @littlebluedolphin 7 лет назад

      Dahlia Legacy Not necessarily. Emperors would be trained in horse riding, horseback hunting and military warfare in those days. It's their duty to stay fit and healthy to lead an empire for as long as they live (they don't end their realm before death). And if war breaks out, the Emperor would have to take lead as a warfare advisor alongside his military generals. They more or less need to train up to be both literate and physically fit, or what the Chinese would say, 文武双全。

The Emperor have their own dietician who was in charge of his menu. Most Emperor let the royal dietician decide the menu. The emperor have more important things to think about other than food.

      Supaiyic channel it's not. its Americanized Chinese food. You can't find general tso chicken in china it was made because Americans usually won't eat authentic Chinese food.

      General taos is a twist off a sweet pork rib dish bc chicken was a more popular American choice of meat. Also the sauce was changed due to the availability of spices and sauces.

    In Korea, the King was served waay more than he could eat intentionally because his female servants were forbidden from cooking for anybody other than him, so they could only eat his leftovers. Maybe in China it was similar.

    Question, when did the so called Monk Jumping over the Wall/Buddha Jumped Over the Fence (which was always described to me as the ULTIMATE imperial dish) get added?

    • @sojoboscribe1342
      @sojoboscribe1342 7 лет назад +1

      I was told it was imperial, indeed that many chefs consider it the most expensive, and complicated dish they have ever made. But since, as they said, a lot of Imperial dishes started as common ones gussied up, it would not surprise me if there were two versions, one basic, one extra fancy. Certainly the recipie I have seen would require ingredients (such as deer tendon, young shark's air bladder and a kind of rare bamboo fungus) that would be beyond most commoners budget.

      Sojoboscribe: See? That's exactly why most Americans wouldn't enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine. Tendons, bladders, noses, tongues, eyeballs, NO. If it's not muscle, and only of cow, pig or poultry, two-thirds of the U.S. won't touch it. The other third was probably raised in households that include more varied protein sources, and some people are just brave and adventuresome.
      Lots of cooking styles have been hybrided for American tastes: Mexican Italian, Chinese and German in particular (and probably others) have an American spin on them. In Mexico, tacos are rarely fried, and don't have lettuce, tomato and cold shredded cheese on them. Spaghetti and meatballs, nor Alfredo is found in Italy. No Orange Chicken or Beef n Broccoli served in China, and hamburgers hotdogs, beer and chicken fried steak as we know them are bastardizations of their original versions. Popular? Yes. Authentic? No.

    • @sojoboscribe1342
      @sojoboscribe1342 7 лет назад

      Try and tell someone that, while there IS such a thing as hot and sour soup in authentic Chinese cuisine (or more accurately sour and peppery soup) it's supposed to have chicken blood in it. Half won't believe you and the other half will ick.
