    This movie is over 40 years old but managed to make a realistic dragon that holds up to this day! Because you know there's something there that you can touch, the way it moves, the way the light and water affect it, your brain believes it COULD be real. That's what good special effects do!

    • @BouillaBased
      @BouillaBased 2 месяца назад +3

      I'm so happy to have spent my formative years, cinematically speaking, during the height of practical effects. Before the Dark Times. Before CGI. It used to be, "We don't need to build a spaceship or an asteroid; we'll render it." Now, it's gotten to the point of, "We don't need sets or props; we'll render it." And I don't care how much they say, "You can't tell the difference."
      I can tell the difference.

      Given the screen improvements of decades you can see the difference easier. TVs back in the day it was harder to tell. Thing is, with a bit of touch up done right they could smooth things out if they wanted to. Flip side is that's a risk as it requires care. A money grab without care, they'll let the AI go wild and it can deform it into horror/bad trip. It'll strip away the actors emotion or make them look like a skin walkers. A risky thing when OG is fine enough. A fan made touch up might work better?? I just want people to see what I saw and experience that. A funny way to say it looked so much better when things looked so much worse.

      I got Conan the Barbarian, Excalibur, Clash of the Titans, right next to Dragonslayer. I'd give it best dragon movie?
      For the 80's i have Ladyhawke on my shelf too but that doesn't hit the fav list like the others do. I excluded animated like The Last Unicorn.
      Barbarians, knights, Gods and dragons. That's a hard list to order. Clash reminds me of Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and since it has trouble beating that It gets 4th place. Dragonslayer 3rd, Excalibur 2nd with it's sword of power, and 1st is Conan and his riddle of steel.

    this movie used a NEW type of stop motion called "go motion" they moved the dragon into position and a computer put it back into last spot, then when the camera took the pic for the frame the dragon was moved from old to new spot, this was done to create motion blur

  • @BigGator5
    @BigGator5 2 месяца назад +15

    "All hail Casiodorus Rex, Dragonslayer!"
    Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Peter MacNicol and Caitlin Clarke.
    Casting Notes Fact: Ian McDiarmid achieved fame as Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars film franchise.
    Location Location Fact: This movie was mostly shot on-location in Wales. Many locals were employed as village extras. The final scene was shot in Skye, Scotland.
    Go-Motion Fact: This was the first movie to use go-motion, a variant of stop-motion animation, in which parts of the model (in this case, the dragon) were mechanized and the movement programmed by computer. During shooting, the computer moves the model while the camera is shooting, resulting in motion blur, which makes the animation more convincing.

    Best pre-CG creature character, best on-screen dragon. After this, animator Phil Tippet went on to create the FX for robo-baddies ED-209 and Cain/Robocop 2.0 for the "Robocop" movies. His next movie after that was "Jurrasic Park." They were going to be stop motion dinosaurs but during pre-production a CG artist at ILM showed them a test animation of a running T-Rex that convinced them to use CG. Draco in "Dragonheart" made a couple years later was the first CG character that spoke. Phil then formed his own company and their first movie was "Starship Troopers"

    The effects in this are shot using a process called "Go Motion". An animatronic puppet is programmed to perform certain movements. Once set into motion the puppet will move through its programmed movement at a designated speed, slower what you see in the final product, while the camera takes a series of single frame exposures while it moves. It's an upgrade to stop motion that introduces natural motion blur to the stop motion process. This was a short lived top tier process that preceded CGI.

    The dragon was the next evolution of the ‘go-motion’ animation first seen with the Taun tauns of The Empire Strikes Back. The dragon was made to look old, injured, the last of its kind. I read the novel with details not brought up in the film. The blond girl who was sacrificed in the beginning and Caitlin Clarke were childhood sweethearts. I believe she never knew ‘he’ was a girl. She prayed that ‘he’ would arrive in time with a wizard to save her from the dragon. In the epilogue of the novel the Princess Elspeth was recognized as a saint for her sacrifice. Caitlin Clarke stole my heart in Dragonslayer. I was heartbroken when she passed away from cancer. RIP.

    She keeps forgetting to put the bones outside the cave on Tuesday which is garbage pick up day. That’s why they’re all over the cave. Dragons right?

    This movie didn't do well in theaters. It was the success of Conan two years later that really kicked fantasy films into gear... and for every good fantasy movie in the '80s and '90s there were ten really awful fantasy movies.
    This movie isn't bad. I think it has too much going on in it. So many sub plots and villains with unclear motives didn't help.

      Oh for sure, we only tend to remember the really good and really awful 😆 I love this whole vibe so I think I will have to be trying some of the others.

    I saw this movie in the theater when it released, there was a big stink raised at the time in the news after it released...it was the first Disney movie that showed boobies, kinda.
    Great special effects for that time, but the nudity fiasco tainted its release so it got snubbed at most of the awards shows. At best, just got nominations for effects.

      Aw, really? That’s sad, the boobies are barely there and the 80s were full of them already.
