The quick version is if we are to think that people deserve or get to "earn" their life, the opposite must also be true. There are indeed people that do not deserve theirs... Life in prison is already a mild sentence in that regard. And that most gets out earlier just on good behaviour and remorse goes to show there is some kind of light at the end of this tunnel
@@snotset2165 well it's kind of both rehabilitation and punishment at the same time that we are aiming for though right? Because someone could show intense remorse and good behaviour after a few days but they should be in prison for awhile to really reflect on what they did and to show true change of heart that could take years for some crimes. But also the whole "lock em up for life" without parole is really just punishment and saying that rehabilitation doesn't matter. Morals can change, especially for young people who may have grown up in a gang environment or with abusive parents, etc, and went down the wrong path early but now they have some space and time to figure things out and to change their morals. Of course there probably are some select few people who are so morally twisted or unable to possess good morals like some psychopaths, who are tough to sentence. Probably those people should get life sentences with possibility of parole at some point, very conditional on being thoroughly evaluated for true repentance and change.

Demons are real though. I was freed from some myself. Its no joke. Its not what you see in the movies either. My demons tormented me with 16 years of addiction to drugs and alcohol. I tried everything from rehabs to going to jail. Nothing was enough to change me. TILL THE VERY DAY I GAVE MY LIFE TO THE LORD. INSTANTLY WAS HEALED. No withdrawal or cravings since. And everything else got better and beyond.

I have many questions as I have tried so many different courses of treatment, some worked for a while and some were a waste of time. AA's 12 Steps I recognise as working for many people, but being a doubter of greater forces of control I struggle to engage with the program. Ohh this is exactly what i was thinking! When people say stuff like that, they're actually giving these sadistic killers the pleasure of knowing how they still control you even from behind bars. A good impact statement would be something like, "you may have destroyed me, but you will never break me. You will rot in jail forever, and you will miss out on all the best things life has to offer. And soon you will be forgotten, while the rest of us move on." Never give them the satisfaction of knowing how much they have taken and how much they have created an impact.

Johnson, until the very end, blamed everyone other than himself. His mother's cries were an example of a parent who never chastised her child for anything. I have no sympathy. Monsters aren't born, they're created. His fear and anger in that moment will never be enough for what he did to that woman and her boyfriend.

Steven Truscott was issued the death penalty at the age of 14 in 1959. He was charged with the rape and murder of 12 year old Lynne Harper in Clinton Ontario Canada. He had his sentenced commuted to life in prison and in 1969, was released into the custody of the judge who released him. In 2007, he was exonerated of the crime. He received $6.5 million in compensation for his incarceration
Ask him if he would give back that money and maybe pay some more to get his life back.

Graham disliked me because I was a tomboy and led his daughter into all sorts of

Take it from a professional - if you're hoping to plead diminished responsibility, avoid mentioning demons of any kind, and keep the references to 'voices' telling you what to do to yourself. Often those with florid mental illness know their thoughts are eccentric and so they keep quiet about it. Matters supernatural rarely figure in psychotic delusions and hallucinations; people who have auditory hallucinations 'telling' them to kill usually know the voice's name, that murder is wrong. Genuine madness is not half as weird as you think it is.

...But some of that seems debatable. First, and I've asked this question to a lot of mental health professionals and even law enforcement. If you're hearing/seeing things, how do you know? Wouldn't it seem "normal" to certain people? If you're that far gone, wouldn't it be indistinguishable? Ive treated a whole lot of real schizophrenic people, and so many of them don't even recognize the issue. Theyll tell you the shadows are telling them things. Yeah, a few will just voice their delusions, but not dare say where it's coming from exactly. Because they know saying it sounds insane. But some don't, and can't keep it in, even they wanted to....

Case study: Robert Thompson and Jon Venables.
Both kids blamed each other for delivering the fatal blow to James Bulger, but the evidence overwhelmingly proved joint enterprise, so both defendants were legally as guilty as each other.

Trust me, the Felony Murder laws in the USA are infinitely more draconian and broad in scope than the "constructive murder" or "joint enterprise" statutes of the Commonwealth nations, which are more in line with common sense. 46 states and the federal government have them. The high incarceration rate of the USA is a testament to the scope and severity of many laws - if they can connect you, even remotely, to a crime, they will try to find a way to jail you on inflated charges.
Felony murder is triggered from any felony of "sufficient danger" which itself is in question - (burglary or grand theft on the low end, to terrorism and arson on the high) where a death occurs as a result - either victim, bystander, or perpetrator/conspirator. So you can be just the driver in a five-man burglary of a warehouse for a defunct company who drops them off and waits at the coffee shop, and if one of the robbers is killed by a falling ceiling lamp, the whole lot (including you) could get sentenced to the equivalent of 1st degree (premeditated) murder, which can carry the death penalty depending on state (although not likely for the example I gave).
I doubt a jury would convict on the felony murder in that instance, but it is ironic that assaults leading to an unintended death are punished often by manslaughter, while a convenience-store robbery where the clerk shoots and kills one of the three suspects while they run out the door, leads to the execution of the other two conspirators, when the it is the *victim* of the crime who did the killing.
Even juveniles are not off the hook for felony murder (unless under 14-16 depending on state), save for the death-penalty part.
Perish the thought entirely in the USA - the US Felony Murder laws are *far* more sweeping in scope (and draconian) than the offerings of the Commonwealth nations with their "Joint enterprise" statute, or in Australia's case with the "Constructive murder" clause (much more limited compared to the USA). In most US states, you can commit a burglary with an accomplice, and if a ceiling lamp falls on him and kills him, that can mean the death penalty for you, the way that law is written (depending on the state) because burglary is eligible for this law to apply.
Or if your buddy pilfers a convenience store (even unarmed) and the clerk shoots and kills him, even if you are just the driver of the car sitting and waiting for him to run out, that can potentially trigger that charge, even though the "victim" did the killing. I don't care about the fate of the robber or whether the use of force was appropriate, but why is it *your* fault the clerk shot him when his life was not in danger?
Meanwhile an accidental death during an assault (which is more closely connected to endangering a life than burglary) is usually punished by a manslaughter conviction... This is one of the reasons the USA has such a high incarceration rate - they find ways to rope everyone into a criminal act governed by broadly written laws....not that I have sympathy for people committing class A / B felonies getting the book thrown at them, but it trickles down to even the least severe felonies.

They still can make new friends, they still can further their education, they can still see and talk to their families, they can still eat, sleep, workout, have a bed to sleep in, have their bellies filled, watch TV, play games and now a days can even have internet use. Yup, some criminals able to receive a sentence that could potentially allow them to be released at some point. Some case around 30 years behind bars, they have a chance of parole. The victim is not breathing anymore, but they still alive. They can get free meal, free medical treatment, etc.
Example Freckle-faced killer Eric Smith, freed on parole at 42. He only spent 28 years behind bars.
