Go with whatever you're used to doing. I did a set of brakes on a JD2840, without knowing anything. Had an overhead chain hoist for heavy lifting. I did use a long bolt that I cut the head off as a pilot, as a service manual suggested. It was in the old days when all I had was a book. Great video, and keep doing what you know to do.👍🚜🔧
Tangent table. heavy load casters with a scissor platform and a turn/tip clamp on it. With muscle you can fake it using some rags and a scissor platform. It also helps to 'butter up' every face.
Thumbs up on another one Andy! You earned that one whether it kicked your butt or not. Working alone looked tough but too much help can really go south sometimes too. Have a good one. It’s cold as heck here too!
One thing that "might" help a little, Klein makes a small digital level and you could get the angle of the tractor frame and match the angle of the axle. Or not :)
ok , i'm back , "hang it from a chain" ; EXCELLENT !! i have occasionally threaded a bolt hole to put lift eye on . does make a HUGE difference to be a little loose for control
Andy you have been doing this type of work for years and better than men half your age. However your videos normally have others in the shop. Working alone with such large and crazy heavy parts may not be the best idea. Good job.
Years ago when I worked at a heavy equipment repair shop a costumer brought in a Backhoe loader that was stuck in forward. He had driven into a creek because he couldn’t stop it. The reverser was packed so tight with the remnants of the brake components that it was locked in the forwards direction. The backside of the reverser piston was completely full of metal particles. It took quite a bit of time to access the transmission case and remove all of the metal from the brake parts.Good times!
Tks for sharing. You make jobs that ive never attempted to do. Half of what you do I would have just lost my temper and yet you just stay so calm. Was nice to hear of Alex. Hope she likes her new change over to new equipment. You should have asked her for her thoughts of the day. We haven't heard on hers or Sarah daily thoughts.
Andy, sorry the all thread dowels didn't work for you. I see what you are saying that the JD axle is probably 2 to 3 times heavier than the CIH axles that we did. We also adjusted the floor jacks under the rear of the tractor so the axle would be level to the floor so it was easier to line up the axle to the stub shaft. We also hung the axle from a chain from the balance point of the axle. Can't wait to see Alex's new tractor.
Andy next time maybe try a piece of pipe over the round shaft weld a bracket to fitt over the forklift tooth thereby you can get your angle right and turn the whole thing to get it alighned
Maybe a fixture made out of a piece of tubing that slides over the axle shaft. It would allow you to turn the final drive a bit to mesh the gears. Another idea is welding a nut or maybe a u-bolt or something similar to the housing at the balance point.
Guide rods work fine when replacing tractor clutches. As you have intended to replace brake linings on both sides, why not remove both sets of rear wheels, so that the axles can be levelled. I doubt you will agree for one second, but it has always worked for me.
Another draw back of using the old red rags was the metal debris/chips still in them after washing. A coworker didn’t check once and wiped a fender down😙
Experience Andy is lifes great teacher , you obviously have been this many times and that is scary just having the guide dowels supporting a ton of weight even to only get the bolts started. We need longer videos, you have a ton of great content with all the PM work and repairs,. We have a JD 5105 and when our brakes needed changed almost always when stepping on a brake you hear the growel and you can feel it in the brake pedal, we have always used Hyguard from JD .Tks Andy !
Hi Andy. Just watched Brian on his channel and he has a tire grabber on a skid steer and a hydraulic jack that you can change tractor or combine tires. Would make it easier to change tires. I think they also make tire changers for trucks too. He got them last year from the Farm Machinery show on demo.
Andy you might try an adjustable pipe stand when you have that hung on the end of the fork , it would support while you move the forks to the bottom side as it would be between the forks, and be safe. Phil
Deere use to use an aluminum crush washer on plugs.bump the plug with a hammer maybe 2 times should loosen.replace with a new crush.i never reused old crush washers.6030 looks good.great work tractor.good video.working solo i find is best.Thank You Sir.
Do you have a heavy duty transmission jack? Used to mount large planetary assemblies. We created a bracket to hold them and get the in line a lot easier. Also created aligning bolts that did not engage in the planetary housing until the spined shaft was just short of being in contact. The pins had a hex machined on then so a socket and extension could be used turn them a get them out.
Have a big pipe over the axel with cross irons to the forks then you can turn the housing to match the bolts be able to turn axel to match spline on inner shaft .
Well andy! I have used that dowel rod method on my old Farmall letter series tractors but you have four times a week and three times more bolts than we have on those
We used to use 4 pins about 3 ft when threads on and once we got it on the my father had two bars that would go from the floor up with adjustable feet on the bottom that he would put on the two pins on each side of the final drive and then suspend the end of it with his engine crane that he built it would slide right on
Take a piece of pipe to slip over the axle welded to flat plate and two tubes welded for your forks to slide in so you can spin it and angle it any way you want.saves from using chain
Cost me more than that when the water pump went out. I was 300 miles from home with my service truck. I had it done at a Ford dealership in Iowa. Also had the radiator and all hoses replaced. $5200 out the door. It's the cost of being in business.
Hi Andy, with your skill set would you not consider fabricating an hydraulic lift or jack system with wheels to remove & refit these axle assemblies? Assuming most JD rear ends are similar dimensions you could build in the adjustment in the jack system which would make these refurbs so much easier for you. Or do you just not have the time? Well done anyhow tacking that on your own.
Made me laugh when you said some guys don't even change tires. I was thinking that's our operation. I've had to replace only one tire on a tractor so far and was due to a flat we couldn't fix. The sad part was the tractor had 9hrs when it happened.
Andy serious question for u....that tractor probably has front hub brakes...most 50 k tractors do. The smaller john deeres tge front axel oil can't mix with tge transmission oil but u said it does on this one.could the front brakes wear and contaminate the transmission oil ?
Very interesting video Andy. Were the prices you gave for a "set" of brake disks, etc. or one disk? Great stuff Andy. Don't you think you should...I know how much you being second guessed. Thanks Andy!
Maybe a transmission jack wouldve worked then turn the shaft to get the gears lined up? Looked kind of sketch hanging on the bolts until you moved the forklift. Ive never done it as long as it works
Just for curiosity on my part I’ve never done that job and really not sure what all is involved but could you possibly tap the hole that the chain is in and then you wouldn’t have to use that nut behind the housing or would that just be too much and do you just feel safer this way
Sorry I didn't proofread as well as I should have I meant to say you have four times the weight and three times the bolts that there are in those old Farmalls
I'm pretty sure on my john deere 540g3 skidder we put the input gear in the planetary side 1st and then put it on. Will that work on your tractor. It look like the same way my rear
I can't get over the cost of parts and we farm too. I can only imagine what a JD dealer would've charged you for this repair. In the past you could figure the labor was about the cost of the parts, but anymore I bet it's 25% more than the cost of your parts. They're really bleeding us
You do know what a “dowel” is right??? It is a smooth sided rod that has a close tolerance fit for you to slide the drives onto the hub. You were using threaded rod and that is where you screwed up. You were fighting it because it is grabbing on the pitch on the threaded rod. A dowel is smooth and it would have slid onto the dowel pins easily without much fuss. I guess the cold got to you today.
I swear Alex is always in a good mood. Always bubbly.
Stop it dude
Her Dad is sets good example for her he takes things in stride that most men would flip out over.
Quite a intaking I didn’t see any smashed fingers. Job well done 😊
Andy you are one determined man. No help and you did it your way. My hat is off to you.
From morrocco Big Hay i love this green machines i Can resest

Good content team Alex being a little concerned when driving is a good thing, keep safe team
Thumbs up on another one Andy! You earned that one whether it kicked your butt or not. Working alone looked tough but too much help can really go south sometimes too. Have a good one. It’s cold as heck here too!
Thanks Bud
That dowel pin idea worked pretty darn well, glad we all could help you!
Thanks for the video and for putting all the trouble and costs out there... Much appreciated.
I love a pun, you took a “brake, stopped to think, and succeeded with the project”.
Thank you for another great video. Stay safe out there. Cheers
Great video I can't believe some of the things you do on your own amazing and super patient or a lot of editing
Amazing. You could not geter done with 6 helpers but nailed it alone. 😀
One thing that "might" help a little, Klein makes a small digital level and you could get the angle of the tractor frame and match the angle of the axle. Or not :)
Thanks for your time and consideration Andy top job every day is a education regards from England 🇬🇧🚜🚛🚜
Andy thanks for sharing the prices of what ur jobs cost to do at times it always amazes me at what things cost
Love your videos Andy , enjoy learning 45:19 from your videos. Love class room videos ❤
Well done getting that in on your own clever stuff
I was wrong sir hope everything running on farm as good as can with winter time weather very interesting videos
ok , i'm back , "hang it from a chain" ; EXCELLENT !! i have occasionally threaded a bolt hole to put lift eye on . does make a HUGE difference to be a little loose for control
Thanks Andy, that was quite a struggle but it's good to see it all back together.
👍😊
Hanging it and dowel pins using two works the best for me!
Andy you have been doing this type of work for years and better than men half your age. However your videos normally have others in the shop. Working alone with such large and crazy heavy parts may not be the best idea. Good job.
The mouse running across the floor at 45:00 LOL
Hi Andy !
Good job bud !
New tractor for Alex. very good !
Thanks Andy for your time and have everybody have a good day at the farm ! 🙋♂️

cool story brah

Thanks for the information on the shop towels Andy. I'm going to get some Wypalls for my shop.
Andy next time maybe try a piece of pipe over the round shaft weld a bracket to fitt over the forklift tooth thereby you can get your angle right and turn the whole thing to get it alighned
Great video as usual. I pull the sun gear and put it into the planetary first. The splines work in easier that way. Yes i use dowels.
Andy hourigan in beast mode fixes most things quickly!!!👏👌🤣🚜
Maybe a fixture made out of a piece of tubing that slides over the axle shaft. It would allow you to turn the final drive a bit to mesh the gears. Another idea is welding a nut or maybe a u-bolt or something similar to the housing at the balance point.
Another good one Andy Thanks for sharing your video's 🚜🐄🌽🇺🇸👍

Always good stuff Andy.
I love those wypall towels. Been using them for years. Once and a while one will go through the wash machine and it doesn’t even phase it.

Very good explanation on y the brakes were out 👍🚜
Thanks for the update Andy.👍🏻 Another job well done
Good job, sometimes it’s easier alone with so many hands trying to help but can’t know what you’re thinking 🤔😉👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

Brian gets more free time not having to feed cows & spread shit. Cole the cornstar didn't even know cows grow horns!
Row crop guys have the coolest stuff. Sad part is most guys with huge shops full of all the toys use it just to change oil and park their boat inside.
Support with chain single point balanced 2 dowel rod of correct thread size but extra long. One man job , ex jd mechanic.
Andy you might try an adjustable pipe stand when you have that hung on the end of the fork , it would support while you move the forks to the bottom side as it would be between the forks, and be safe. Phil

I hammered it couldn’t get it
Great job
When Big A speaks,I listen!
That was a battle but you beat it in the end!
Thanks for all the explanation Andy!
What do you need is getting polar fly around get them in there😊
But in the end, whatever works for you is the best

Hope Alex's new tractor a 9620 give sarah a run for her money keep the videos coming andy always enjoy

When you're at Caz equipment they should have a jig to hold those final drives and take some pictures of it and then make one
Cost me more than that when the water pump went out. I was 300 miles from home with my service truck. I had it done at a Ford dealership in Iowa. Also had the radiator and all hoses replaced. $5200 out the door. It's the cost of being in business.
I ENJOYED WATCHING THE VIDEO ANDY 😊
I'm imptessed what you can do all alone.
I used mobil delvac in all my diesel 18 wheelers and PUs , are you old enough to remember the A and R deeres .
Andy I think it would be better to weld a piece of steel to the nut first , my luck I would drop the nut 🙏
How does the dealership do this job….do they have special equipment for this job?
Alex I’ve always been told if you’re not a bit scared running tanker. You shouldn’t be running it.
my last job, we always had problems with the ivt transmissions, I think they are just junk
Made me laugh when you said some guys don't even change tires. I was thinking that's our operation. I've had to replace only one tire on a tractor so far and was due to a flat we couldn't fix. The sad part was the tractor had 9hrs when it happened.
Many as usual Andy think their way is the best way, your tractor your shop your money do it your way.
Hi Andy
They fall right in on a fendt, leave the trans in neutral and rotate the axle. Got the wrong shade of green 😎
Transmission will still rotate???
Andy serious question for u....that tractor probably has front hub brakes...most 50 k tractors do. The smaller john deeres tge front axel oil can't mix with tge transmission oil but u said it does on this one.could the front brakes wear and contaminate the transmission oil ?
The Oil is for the Suspension...
In all honesty , it’s not always a bad thing to attack certain things by ourselves sometimes.
Just a thought, would a pipe that fits over the 4 or 5" axle which was welded to to some box iron that the fork fits into work?
We use stainless steel rods threaded they dont give one on top and one on bottom
Very interesting video Andy. Were the prices you gave for a "set" of brake disks, etc. or one disk? Great stuff Andy. Don't you think you should...I know how much you being second guessed. Thanks Andy!
Individual
Hi Andy, received my zipped up hoody on the 20th of Jan. Thanks again. Keep the action and knowledge coming. You all stay safe!!
Good to hear
When do we get to see the new 9620 for Alex?
The 410 will use an EVT transmission or the E23.
Would a jig using rectangular tubing for the forks to slide in welded a piece of round pipe for the axle to slide in to support when installing?
Maybe a transmission jack wouldve worked then turn the shaft to get the gears lined up? Looked kind of sketch hanging on the bolts until you moved the forklift. Ive never done it as long as it works
Andy, on your dual rears, is there a rule of thumb regarding how much lower tire pressure on the outside tires should be?
Hello Andy
how much hours did the brakes last ?
7863 hours on it
Just for curiosity on my part I’ve never done that job and really not sure what all is involved but could you possibly tap the hole that the chain is in and then you wouldn’t have to use that nut behind the housing or would that just be too much and do you just feel safer this way

I'm pretty sure on my john deere 540g3 skidder we put the input gear in the planetary side 1st and then put it on. Will that work on your tractor. It look like the same way my rear
Engine hoist works.
Hey Andy, have you seen the tire grabber attachment? Would that help or be better for putting the tires back on?
I can't get over the cost of parts and we farm too. I can only imagine what a JD dealer would've charged you for this repair. In the past you could figure the labor was about the cost of the parts, but anymore I bet it's 25% more than the cost of your parts. They're really bleeding us
No,I don't care what you care,I just give what you receive.
That’s Mr Jangles! He a circus mouse!
I thought when we had it apart we were putting new tires one it?
Great Vid 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
it should work ok
Do you use magnetic drain plugs. Seems to slow down wear on everything that has oil reservoir.
You do know what a “dowel” is right???
It is a smooth sided rod that has a close tolerance fit for you to slide the drives onto the hub.
You were using threaded rod and that is where you screwed up. You were fighting it because it is grabbing on the pitch on the threaded rod.

Rubbish, go pretend to be intelligent somewhere else . He used dowels
