Look at how he used Steven Spielberg blue print, but also managed to produce something of himself. It's like he uses books and studies then to make a great product. Brilliant just brilliant.
Neil Wilson I mean, they aren't supposed to be kids. Both groups in Saving Private Ryan and Fury are depicted as soldiers who have clearly worked together for years and bonded as a unit, that's why Norman was the youngest character and the only 'kid' in Fury. During the Omaha beach scene in Saving Private Ryan, the beach is full of young soldiers who can't be much older than 20.
love them both. what a pity that the camera work in this interview was not good, shaky, too close and I would rather have kept them both in frame from 1:14 onwards, would have been more interesting than seeing all the random people to the right.
captainkavern she looks stunning for her age. look at her older interviews! shes become more attractive by my standards ;) reversing time the nolan way :D
'Dunkirk': Christopher Nolan On How 'Saving Private Ryan' Shaped His Film -- is this the correct title? in saving private ryan, I could see the germans while in "dunkirk" I couldn't see them XD
Nolan executed authenticity over realism, introduced an extremely thrilling film that will last through the ages, it was his style that makes this film Trump over SPR.
Comparing Dunkirk vs Saving Private Ryan Realism (3pt), execution (3pts) and entertainment (3pts) Realism = Dunkirk 2pt, SPR 1pt (slight edge) Execution = Dunkirk 2pt, SPR 1pt (slight edge) Entertainment = SPR 3pt (clear edge) Total = SPR 5 Dunkirk 4 Saving Private Ryan is somewhat superior Summary Although Saving Private Ryan is one of the most realistic war films ever, Dunkirk tops SPR because of the extensive emphasis of realism by Nolan for the film. Execution wise, is very close. Both films have spectacular execution, but in very different ways. In terms of edge, Dunkirk has intensity throughout combined with spectacular sound effects and a unique and solid plot progression. SPR has flawless and convincing acting with a great plot progression. Dunkirk takes the slight edge due to the simple flawlessness of its execution. In terms of entertainment, saying Dunkirk gets zero points sounds like an insult. But it isn't. SPR is simply that good. SPR has a clear advantage in terms of entertainment, as to why it has all 3 points. SPR has thorough emotion and thrill when describing it's captivation effectiveness. Dunkirk has strong intensity, although not enough to offset SPR's clear edge. Both movies are overall masterpieces by the way. Christopher Nolan is the best director of all time in my personal opinion. His movies are flawless and has yet to make a film that hasn't been regarded as a gem.
"Christopher Nolan is the best director of all time in my personal opinion" Oh, that's cute. Tom Brady's balls haven't dropped yet. Now wait until your first couple of teeth grow in before you think you can start eating the big boy's food.
The difference between Dunkirk and Saving Private Ryan is that Spielberg didn't drown his film in extremely annoying ambient music that just drones on and on
MatthewLedZepfan your right, he just americanized everything and turned every german into an evil bastard. At least we didnt see the germans in Dunkirk.
The alternative is dialogue or just leaving it to be boring. Exchanging gunfire is naturally way more suspenseful than realistic dogfights, boating, and waiting at the beach. It’s much easier for Spielberg to keep the music out and still have suspense than it is for Nolan, so the music is needed. Not to mention it’s good. I have no idea why the music would annoy someone.
Such a smart Director!!!

That's what I believe he's been doing since his first feature Following
Crime Fictions of Jim Thompson and John M Cain
Chris is really a genius... everything he says actually works so well in the film.
He has a point thought that normandie scene is not everyone cup of tea .
Emma just gets more beautiful with time.
Power couple
After watching Dunkirk, I had to watch saving private Ryan , see the allies reclaim France
l1222214 jnv111 Agreed I never thought of it that way...
Dunkirk works as a prequel to Saving Private Ryan...
Also a great movie, but the actors are too old. In Saving Private Ryan, and Fury, the kids are 25-35 years old, not 18-25.
Neil Wilson I believe you speak the truth.

I also think you will find alot of 'older men' fought in ww2 aswell.. it was 'everyone's war' if you will
1:09 you wanna take it it babe
That was nicely done
I'm not gay....but love this mannnn
Gay
I actually find Chris Nolan intimidating lol I still admire him but he reminds me of an accounting lecturer I once had.
Spielberg is my favorite director of all time, Nolan being the runner up.
Rare footage of these two together. Love it!
Didn't hide my eyes from SPR. One of the best films i have ever seen covering the period.
I wish I could talk/answer questions as smoothly as he does.
Dunkirk is 2017 Best, greatest movie! l respect director Nolan!
He always has such good answers
i was glued to SPR, fuck looking away.
..... and Canadian, too. The pier master was a Canadian officer credited with saving over 200,000 soldiers.
love them both. what a pity that the camera work in this interview was not good, shaky, too close and I would rather have kept them both in frame from 1:14 onwards, would have been more interesting than seeing all the random people to the right.

War is about realism, that is authenticity. What the fuck are you talking about? Dunkirk is a snooze fest compared to SPR.
Saving Ryan?! ...it has more sink the Bismarck style than saving Ryan.
DUNKIRK tis an interesting experimental perspective on allies surviving an enemy attack from the inside out. 🇬🇧🇫🇷🇺🇸

Christopher Nolan is the best director of all time in my personal opinion. His movies are flawless and has yet to make a film that hasn't been regarded as a gem.
Tom Brady stupid Dunkirk is a thriller set during war... saving private ryan is a straight war film I wouldn't even compare the two.
Hans Zimmer = 100 points for Dunkirk. Dunkirk wins.
that's right brother....impact everyone must see saving private ryan .....

MatthewLedZepfan your right, he just americanized everything and turned every german into an evil bastard. At least we didnt see the germans in Dunkirk.
Yeah.. Spielberg drowned his movie in annoying patriotism and after the landing scene it goes all to a joke..

No, he just had Americans winning the war and ignored the word "ally".
Dunkirk was awesome, Saving Private Ryan was shit, weird.
