    Finally a review that doesn't assume we're all freaking editing video at 4K or 8K. These other "Techtubers" need to get their act together and put the common people use case in their assessment instead of just sticking to what they know which is video editing. Us common folks use a browser with multiple tabs open, productivity suites, programming for some and the occasional gaming.

      The reason they’re doing that is because it’s priced above the m1 which is the real low end and is still an amazing computer for all normal computing tasks. That leaves the m2 in an awkward middle child place where it’s not good enough to compete with the pro when specced up, but it’s value proposition at the low end is sort of compromised by how easy it is to get a great deal on the m1- leaving aside all ssd issues (which yes, do matter in an 8gb laptop)

  • @jordanr.4856
    @jordanr.4856 2 года назад +70

    The M1 completely changed what we have come to expect from “entry level” laptops. I bought an Intel i3 MacBook Air in April 2020, and you could *lightly* edit two streams of 1080p footage MAX on that thing and you’d still need to drop res while editing. The battery lasted like five hours or so, and it was hot to the touch with just a few tabs open.
    The M1 completely revolutionized and changed what was possible on a $999 device. Now people are like “why can’t this entry level device edit five streams of 8k?”

    On the question of which model to go for this was my though process. If I wanted to upgrade the RAM to 16GB and the SSD to 512GB the price would end up near the 14" M1 Macbook Pro. As a uni student that is an overkill. Therefore, I opted for the basemodel M2 Macbook Air and an Ipad Air with apple pencil. As a student the basemodel is more than enough and an Ipad would benefit me more than the unnecessary upgrades. In addition to the educational discounts I got the giftcards they offer right now with each purchase. I bought the M2 Macbook Air first, used the $150 giftcard when buying the Ipad Air, and then used to $100 giftcard when buying the apple pencil. This way I got to use all the giftcards and for the same price as the 14" M1 Macbook Pro and for a bit more than the upgraded M2 Macbook Air I got a Macbook and an Ipad.

      It is very interesting to note that you bought both a MacBook and an iPad. What does the total price compare to buying an M1 MacBook Pro. In any case, you determined what your needs were and how best to satisfy those needs. And that's what it all comes down to. And Apple is doing something well if they can come up with a range of products to satisfy those needs effectively. Your use case and decision process may be very helpful to others.

These RUclipsrs are completely brainwashed by Apple's marketing strategy, they are all convinced that the base model is terrible and have completely losr sight of what it is meant to be used as. They have all perfectly fallen into the Apple clever pricing trap and tell new buyers to go for more expensive versions with 16gb (tbh worth it) or 512ssd (not useful) and more options. They completely overlook what normal people do with a laptop and expect us to be exporting files and editing all day, (maybe they'll wake up one day) So thanks for this video, it was very refreshing

    I was going to buy the M1 but the screen brightness is not enough. I will be using the computer outside in public places and the brighter screen is why I decided to buy the M2. MacBook Pro is thicker and heavier so no good for carrying around. I have an M1 Mac Mini for my home desktop system. I haven’t bought the MacBook Air yet as the stores in the U.K. won’t have it in stock until later this month. Thanks for your video. BTW If you set the Air to Low Power it will run much cooler with minimal performance drop. About 52f.

    This is just what I was looking for. Why has it taken so long to even find this video! I've got this decision of M2 Air or M1 Pro (similar money) but my preference does lie on the M2 side. But its that nagging "value" proposition of the M1 Pro and the potential for the Pro to be way better with Lightroom etc. But my use case is going to be exactly like here... most of the time it will be web browsing, light documents, RUclips. Then I will occasionally use Lightroom to edit photos (like < 100 photos at a time).

  • @illuminaughty7957

    This is the most relatable review I've seen. I just placed an order for the M2 Air, and as a computer science student, i code, do my online classes, use apple sidecar with my ipad, some photoshop and Lightroom. And that's about it for intense tasks. Other than that maybe some cloud gaming like stadia and Netflix, that's bout it. I'm not editing 4k and 8k videos or exporting them. That would never be my workflow either

    Worst M2 review ever. If you just need a laptop for the basic things you mentioned, M1 laptop or in fact some can argue some Windows laptop costing half of basic M2 Air can do just as fine. What's the point of having a compromised laptop that costs more?

  • @alter-ego-

    Dude you don't get it.. people are hating it NOT because it can't edit 8k footage. But because Apple has cunningly made 256gb version slower so we have to buy a higher model and spend more. Yet they advertise it like a 1200 dollar product.
    They did the same with the base model iMac which has only one fan. (Also 256gb for a computer at 2022 is a joke.)

  • @tonyblack3401
    @tonyblack3401 Год назад

    It’s ultra portable, light and very capable. I don’t edit 8k video. It’s silent, slim, fan less, nice design. My workload is photoshop, office, lots of chrome tabs and occasional gaming if I’m bored. For me the ultra portability, paired with the battery life is what did it for me. I upgraded the ssd to 1TB, the GPU to 10 core and the ram to 24gb so I’m pretty set for the next 3 years or more. £80 a month interest free? Pffff if you’re a professional and you use your laptop for business it’s a no brainer. I can take the laptop out without a charger all day for a full days work and charge when I get home.

    Not a power house, but if you want an entry level computer, have a look on Amazon. I bought a 180 dollar Windows pc on there with i3 processor, 4GB mem and 120GB SSD. Now that entry level!

    I would not call this an entry level laptop lol... sure it is not a MacBook pro but this thing can even blow some other Windows laptops out of the water for the same price (Battery/performance per watt, Touchpad, all alluminum body, 1080p cam, no fan, thinness, etc). Only downside is repairability and upgradability but again I have been with the m1 for almost 1.5 years with no issues using it for remote work.

  • @JT-et7ui

    No point fussing about SSDgate when the only activity I would notice the slower read/write speed (transferring files) is dictated by my external hard drives speed, and not if I choose an M2 or M2 machine (which both have higher internal SSD’s than the external SSD’s). Correct?
