Yeah, that's what the Steam Deck is sitting on. I wouldn't use it for that really, but it's good for shooting footage of the Deck. It is really meant for phones, but they do have other tablet holders, I don't know if any of them would work with the Steam Deck.

One thing to add about frame rates. While yes, they are adjustable. Please remember that when you plug in to an HDTV using the dock or another method, the TV will see a signal, but give you an error stating the format is not supported. What this means is that you need to unplug your Deck, and change the FPS to either 30, 60, or 120 fps (if your TV can do 120). Then plug the Deck back in. Hopefully this info helps someone.

One fun tip, if you add a non Steam game that also has a Steam version (maybe you bought it from a different store for instance) it will not by default show the Steam community configs for that game when browsing. If you set the shortcut name to the AppID Steam uses for the Steam version of the game it'll let you browse them. Say for instance you own the GOG version of Cyberpunk 2077 and add it to Steam, if you change the name to 1091500 (visible in the URL of the store page) you can see the ones people who own it on Steam have come up with, then rename back to a more readable one when you find one you like. Don't have a Deck yet so can't 100% verify it'll work still there, but I've been using the trick for years with my Steam Controller/Steam Input with other controllers/etc and would be odd if they changed it now
==EDIT== Have the Deck now, can confirm it still works. Have to export as a template and rechoose if you rename it back, I think I just always left it as the APPID and went by picture instead of name so never noticed that bit. There's also a Steam URI you can run from a browser to pop the configurator for a game without doing the renaming bit if that's easier for you, still need to do the export as template bit. Enter steam://controllerconfig/APPID in a browser and set to open in Steam
==EDIT 2== Trying out URI method, can't get it to work properly even on desktop desktop (as opposed to desktop mode on the Deck), just causes a crash for games I don't own on Steam, got bored with troubleshooting since the renaming method has always worked for me. Could halve the renaming steps by creating a dummy non Steam game that doesn't actually launch anything important and continually renaming that rather than renaming the shortcut for the game itself I suppose.

Get at minimum a USB to USBC dongle, so you can plug something like a keyboard, mouse, or flash drive directly into the Steam deck. Preferably get a USBC-compatible docking station with power supply so you can just plug in all your devices at the same time, in addition to charging. Basically turning the Steam deck into an actual desktop computer. I just use the docking station off my work computer any time I need to do something in Desktop mode, and it works perfectly.

Just looked it up, go to Power > reboot in desktop mode
Also when you go to type you need to press STEAM button + X to bring up onscreen keyboard

One thing I would like to add is if you are a tinkerer or modder. I would heavily suggest learning Linux if you can. If you have an old laptop or something collecting dust, Linux could bring it back to life, and is a great little sandbox to learn up on it. Learning up on the basics of the terminal can allow you to do things that Windows could never dream of doing.

I definitely like how simple and intuitive SteamInput is. For one of my games (a 2D platformer whose default controls do NOT map the D-pad to menu navigation or character movement!) it was super simple to remap the Deck's D-pad as "Left joystick" (sure, I could also map each D-pad direction to a stick direction individually), and much faster than actually remapping the same controls in-game. However, there are a few things that I would kind of like to map to a combination of buttons, and I'm not sure that's a thing. For example, snapping a screenshot is Steam+R1, but depending on the game that can be an incredibly clunky combination to press -- so I mapped L4/R4 as buttons to take screenshots with. (I kind of would like to map it as L4+R4 so I can use the buttons individually, but...)

Here's a tip, get a silicone case. The deck is kinda big and you don't want to drop it with no protection. That said, most silicone case make using R1 and L1 a bit difficult (especially in games like Dark Souls where you use this 2 buttons all game long) so create a controller template with L4 and R4 set to L1 and R1 since they are much easier to hit than the L1 and R1 that are a bit awkward to press with a case on.

Some games like TES 4 Oblivion wouldn't load past the splash screen. It was something not being loaded correctly by the game.
I solved it by installing another game which properly loaded whatever Oblivion didn't. It was the demo of monster hunter stories 2 I believe. Worked for me.

Same here! apparently it shipped out but the delivery company doesn't have it yet. I'm guessing Friday will be the lucky day! I've made a list of games out of my library I would want on a Deck and ones I might want to and all of them combined are 570GB. I heard people say that the storage is tiny, even on the 512GB and you know... sure 512GB these days isn't impressive but this is 53 games combined, for contrast, on my PC right now I have 27 games, a few of them are lingering after I finished them, and a bunch are here if I "maybe want to play them" once in a blue moon. And that is actually 600GB so still, not fall off the 512GB (or prolly like 480, realistically) mark.

    Got mine this week.
I’ll be honest, it’s rather overwhelming.
So, I’ve sat it down for now, and am trying to learn a lot more about what it can do, and perhaps more importantly, what I should be doing with it.
Like, you said Desktop Mode, like that’s a simple thing. I don’t even know how to do that yet.
Nevermind stuff like why my micro SD card isn’t showing up.
But videos like this help, so thanks for doing it 😃

    • @KuittheGeek
      @KuittheGeek 2 года назад +4

I would say what you should be doing with it is playing games in game mode, at least to start. Get comfortable with the device and get gaming. After that, there are a whole lot of things you can get into, but you don't really need to. If you have a powerful gaming PC already, you can use Remote Play to stream the games very easily. As long as you are logged into Steam on both, you should get an option to stream the game to the Deck, although I don't have mine yet, and am likely still a few months out.
Once you feel like you can jump into desktop mode, you can hold down the power button or open the Steam menu on the left and you should find a 'Switch to Desktop Mode' option listed. That will log you out of gaming mode and drop you into the desktop mode. That should feel familiar to most Windows desktops from the last decade, but it is still Linux and specifically the KDE desktop environment, so you will likely have to find a few things. The search option in the start (application) menu will be your friend here. From there, you can load up the Discover software center and search for the software you might be interested in. I would recommend ProtonUp-Qt like Bill said for downloading the GE versions of Proton, Heroic Games Launcher for any games on Epic and GOG, and BoilR if you want to easily import your non Steam games into Steam and by extension gaming mode, complete with cover art. You can also install Lutris to install other game launchers, but you can also use Steam's 'Add a Non Steam Game' option in the desktop Steam client to add the exe for a launcher to install it with Steam and Proton, just be sure to go into the settings menu for the launcher once you have added it to Steam and set the compatibility mode to use Proton. Past that, there are plenty of things you can learn, it is Linux after all. But I would say that should get you gaming through most things you might be interested in.

      @@KuittheGeek awesome, thanks!
I actually downloaded the Aperture Desk Job game, I hear it’s a good way to learn about the steamdeck.
All went well, until I got to the game part where nothing seemed to work.
Like none of the controls worked.
In fact looking at a play through video, something happened to mine, where only the ABXY buttons showed up on the right hand side of the orange work top. The other buttons didn’t show up.
      Nothing else was recognized.
      I couldn’t figure it out.
Then I couldn’t figure out how to restart the game to see if that would fix it.
So. I sat it back down and will leave it until the weekend when I have some more time to read up before jumping in.
So far it’s been a frustrating experience. But I’m sure I’ll get on top of it eventually 😆
