#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

The reason the community is so fondly remembered is that it was a community of, overwhelmingly, first timers. Most of us original players had never played a MMO before. Being completely clueless with an entire server of people who are completely clueless makes for some hilariously memorable unintended co-operative play. This, as a result, makes friends.
Basically, that's why us old players always have, and probably always will, wax nostalgic about classic WoW.
Oh, and the game was completely borked from tech perspective in the first months. It wasn't solid, lol. Me and my raid once spent two or three hours hanging in the air above Southshore because we, as a raid, fell through the world while on a raid, heh. (If we released we'd have lost out loot. Priorities.)

@@omegaxtrigun dont forget it was harder back then a lot of mobs in vanilla was elites or had larger aggro ranges plus most classes could only fight one or if lucky two mobs at the same time (if you fought two you had to stop and heal afterward), in a 1 vs 1 not always.
quest mob been one level above you... its 1 vs 1 or you will die after that it became even less (presume you didn´t have some kind of cheese tactics)
another thing was the higer level mobs sprinkled among other mobs.
take Elwyn forest neutral boars at level 5 and amounts all them a level 7-9 bear (aggressive).
so you could be on minding your own business and if you didn´t pay attention to that bear... well you on level 5-6 vs a level 7-9 bear you lost especial if it jumped you after a boar fight.

Actually, most of WoW's initial playerbase were vetreran MMO players. Whether EQ1, UO, or MUDs, or some other MMO (i started my MMO life in Lineage 2). The community is remembered fondly because a lot of the trolling and toxicity (i hate to use that word, but it fits) was not tolerated by the community at large and such behavior quickly got a person blackballed on a server. It's not rose colored glasses, it's just simply that the community was better.
That shift from helpful and friendly and courteous happened over many years. And if you want to see that same shift happening in real time now, look at FFXIV's community. A lot of the WoW refugees have migrated there because the devs aren't shit and the community has long been lauded as being amazing. But as more of WoW's trash players (and i'm not talking skill, but personality) migrate to FFXIV, the community has seen a drastic change. And not for the better.

I think you did a fantastic job with this review. You made your points eloquently and I can tell you thought everything out. I like how you are breaking down each aspect of the game and giving separate aspects their own score. Very cool and smart way to approach reviewing such a 'massive' type of game. :) The amount of explanation before-hand was a lot but I also totally understand why you wanted to try to be as open as possible, especially when this is the first game you're doing.
But yeah, definitely looking forward to the next review!

16:05 The "dead zone" is not the same thing as the minimum distance for ranged attacks, though it is related. Dead zone refers specifically to the distance from a target where _neither melee nor ranged attacks are within the correct range to be used._ This was the space between 5 and 8 yards from the target, where most normal combat abilities were unusable.
I first played hunter during patch 2.4, which was after the minimum range for ranged attacks had been reduced to eliminate the dead zone.

My first MMO was EverQuest or "EverCrack"... it consumed my life at a young age so by the time WOW came out I was just coming off my addiction to MMOs so I passed on joining in. So when WOW classic came around it felt like a second chance to try something so popular that I missed out on. I had fun but made some mistakes. The biggest was leveling a Druid that I stubbornly stuck with all the way to 60. By the time I realized feral druids dps was meh I was forced into being a tank which I can say from expirance is not a fun role to play as your first introduction to raiding. I met a lot a great people that took me under their wing and showed me the ropes. They were super paitent with me as I leaned how to be main tank for group raids(our server had a huge lack of tanks). I played for around 8 months and by then I saw what there was to see, did what there was to do so I stopped playing. At the end of the day I now have a better understanding when people talk about their WOW addictions and why they still play to this day.

I love classic, but now I fear for its future. It still makes no sense to me how Activision, who everyone describes as the clichéd "greedy corporation" just out to make money, would want to kill the golden goose that makes the most money for Blizzard, being the Warcraft franchise. But Classic probably doesn't require a large team of devs to maintain, so it's got the best chance for survival I suppose.

"hour long alterac valleys" made me chuckle :D. Back in the days, you would play in AV for a few hours, go to bed, wake up and join the same map to fight some more hours :D But yeah from what I gather that's not what's happening in classic at all.

    • @akhsdenlew1861
      @akhsdenlew1861 4 года назад +13

ofc not, 2020 gamers are x1000 times better, smarter and faster.
      And with KNOWLEDGE.
honestly, if people managed to drag an AV game for a day or two, they would probably be Monkeys instead of humans...yea thats how bad old gamers were compared to now.
People like to blame the AV version, which is obviously irrelevant.
In pservers, AVS were at their hardest, and the HORDE premades could win the games in 15 minutes.
Truth is that nowadays, even if u put cthuns on the bunkers instead of archers, players will still find a way to steamroll through.
      it's 2020 gamers vs 2004 game...guess who's gonna win.
The power of knowledge people have over the game is just tooo damn strong.
not to mention that players literally have the ability to "see the future" in the game.. they know exactly what's coming, when it's coming and how to deal with it, DAYS before it even comes live.
Now combine all this with the mega super ultra Overpowered PCS we have, compared to back then.
Now, everyone min-maxing and makes everything competitive, which is also a good reason that makes the experience shitty.
In order to have the same old vanila experience you need to go back in time.
      There's no other way... period.
People like to blame blizzard, but on classic wow blizzard didn't do anything wrong.
Whatever happens to classic wow, i asure you, it is 99% the playersbase fault.
The game was designed in 2004, the gamestyle and the whole gaming ideology was different back then.. People were different.
2020 gamers will abuse every single flaw that vanila has in it's system, and trust me... it has A LOT of poor systems.. cus its a 2004 game.
Back then it wasnt breaking the game becouse it was 2004 gamers vs 2004 game.. but now, the "fight" is just unfair..

@@thegoat2985 The pug vs pug lasted indeed longer some of the times.
Right now the pug vs pug lasts 31 minutes max, only cus horde drags it to 30+ mins for the extra 600 honor.
But the premades speed was not that different considering that pservers had the old AV.
My HORDE premade was doing 15 mins AV runs.. with the old AV(shreders, mines, middle of npcs, elite mobs on snowfall + boss, twice harder hitting archers etc.).. And with some wierd bugs like... Murgot deepthroat and his gank respawning every 1 min ( literally).
And still 15 mins wins, as horde.
So i don't believe that the AV version makes a significant difference.
Thing is that in Private servers, those who played were really just wanting to enjoy the game, enjoy vanila.
Now, since it's the REAL game, everyone wants to min max and get fully decked FAST and EFFICIENT.
It's not the game, it's the player's mentality that makes the game seems so much different, while in reality it's not.

samtemdo8 And what exactly do you think Blizzard will have to offer in the future? Starcraft is dead, Diablo 3 was bad and 4 will be no different, with Path of Exile 2 being in development. I was thinking that it would be a choice I wouldn't regret, if I chose to never interact with a Blizzard product ever again.
This is specifically worded this way because I'm a big fan of their games, as in, if I substituted Blizzard up there for e.g. Riot this statement would not carry the same meaning. The idea is to specifically not play Blizzard games _because_ they're kinda good enough for me to like them, so as to avoid the inevitable spiral of disappointment due to the executive decisions the company makes. As long as you continue helping their products survive, their management strategy is validated in the eyes of investors.

I hit max level on two different characters, and I loved leveling up and doing the dungeons with friends (or strangers.) Once I hit the endgame raid-wall, I quickly lost interest. Even though it's been 13+ years since I ran these raids at current level, they are ingrained my memory still and the idea of drudging through them for months in order to slowly get a piece of gear every now and then was not interesting (I played a Priest, and there were 6 others I had to compete with), so I stopped playing.

Maybe as a twinkoholic, yeah, but that's like a minority of players. Also, I don't think that you are forced in retail to go at the fastest pace possible by constantly queuing dungeons. Neither do I think Classic questing experience is superior to retail outside of being more challenging. Overall, I have to admit that WoW progression for both versions of the game is too unified and homogeneous, there are far too few class/race-specific quests that could contribute to making your particular character path unique. Also, due to the very nature of MMO genre you cannot see effects of your actions in the world. They try to tackle this issue in retail by introducing sharding, but end up creating more issues than there were.

    • @mikoto7693

I agree, FF14 is my best MMO experience. I’ve played FF11 for years from about a year before Aht Urghan was released to a few months after Abyssea was released. I hated that you suddenly went from months levelling a new job, constantly practicing and growing in exp parties to being able to pretty much AFK in Abyssea with either a Linkshell group or randoms and you could go from lvl 15 or so to lvl 90, the new cap in a day or two. None of the weapon or magic skills would be levelled up. Now I admit the game did need to reduce the levelling process from 4 months to a year, dropping it to two days was too much.
Even so, I kinda drifted away, gradually logging in less and less. After I realised I hadn’t logged in at all in seven weeks yet was still paying the sub and had no plans to log in. So I quit.
I did give some thought of selling my account for hundred of pounds since I had maxed out two classes and had decent gear. But I liked my character and I thought she deserved to a retirement. Didn’t seem right to sell her to someone else.
I’ve played Star Trek Online and it’s pretty good for all its flaws. But there were lootboxes, premium store and the story was poor.
Fallout 76 got better after Wastelanders dropped but the quest chains are to short.
ESO for the most part I enjoyed overall. It has a decent story but I worry about the day I encountered a bos that was too tough for me to beat alone.
FF14 on the other hand has everything I could want. Unique character, great story, good graphics and systems. The only mild downsides are forced group dungeons and bosses for the main quest. I feel the main quest should give players a choice. And we could have done with being a random normal mercenary/adventurer for a bit longer

I still remember what got me into WoW back during Vanilla; A parody video of Weird Al's "Amish Paradise" set to various WoW scenes. It blew me away that such a game existed, when the most advanced I had seen up to that point being Runescape. Playing it on a crappy Dell was suffering, but god was it mind blowing all the same.
Much as it infuriates me to agree with Brack, he wasn't too far off. Much of the mindset for MMOs had evolved since Vanilla's reign, and the newcomers that started with it had grown past their younger, less experienced selves. Add private servers to the mix and suddenly Vanilla is a solved game, where much of the charm was the unknown.
I'd liken it to, say, a backyard pool. As a kid, it looks bottomless and perhaps even scary, but still loads of fun. Cut to several years later and your feet touch the bottom while still being well above the water level. The fun is still there, but its missing those other elements that made it truly special.

In regards to "flaws of the game being on full display" when the game gets massive, well, you have to remember that originally the servers had 2k population caps (there's also a factor that contemporary players finish content faster and have nothing else left to do but trying to claim world bosses or grinding honor, but that doesn't need to enter the discussion). Hell, server-side lag is actually a worse issue in Classic than it was historically, seeing as that BFA engine is optimized for sharding: it gets laggy when old retail servers would have still managed, and big private servers have had just as many players and not being as laggy.
In other words, that is an entirely valid criticism of WoW Classic, one of the reasons I didn't play myself (I know from private server experience that such high populations per server/layer don't provide a compelling experience to me, and WoW Classic addressed the this issue worse than private servers tend to do at that), but I don't think it's fair to count it as a strike against the game's original design: no flaws are being revealed when the game is played with populations it was designed to be played with.

  • @Espersontheone

I liked you review until you mentioned leveling and how you though it was boring and repetitive.
I know i might sound elitist or dismissive but did not experience levering for real. You played a Hunter, the second easiest class in Classic, installed a quest helper addon and played horde. It is well known among the classic wow community that blizzard rushed the zones for horde in the early stages. I would urge you to play an Alliance character to level 30 and seek out Loch Modan, Duskwood and Westfall. They are great zones with a lot of love poured into them.
Something you also forget to mention was the different realms, some are PvP realms with PvP toggled on by standard unlike PvE or RP realms with it toggled off by default. This is my mind is very important to how you experience your open world leveling. It is natural to fear or hate your enemy faction, but sometimes you can look past your diffrenses and RP together. It´s like a temporary truce amidst a hostile world where kindness will stay with you for many years to come. I will remember an undead mage who helped me with a quest by killing on of the two NPCs and saving me from death, we the waited and I helped his as well.
Like you said in the beginning of the video, assessing the qualities of an MMORPG is very hard and will likely take 100s of hours of playtime. Playing with a guild, meeting new friends that you will spend late night chatting with about what ever is something you can´t rush. Getting an understanding of PvP ranks and how much effort people put in is unimaginable to non wow players.
If someone reads this, please look back at what you have played of Classic and try to remember your struggles and compare them too your level 60 bad-ass Raid geared monster and how easy it is now. How far you have come.
Cheers from Esperdon @ EU Noggenfogger Alliance

I miss Vanilla and all the experiences and stories.
My favorite was running Scholomance, in the room above Rattlegore. We were fighting the trash mobs like every other time, when all the mobs suddenly ran down stairs. We were like "where the hell are they going?!", then it dawned on us... the tank got knocked back into one of those chutes to Rattlegore. We started laughing about the same time all the mobs were coming back up stairs for us. Good times!!

As much as I love Classic WoW, I have decided to let my sub run out and not resub. I cannot tolerate how Blizzard has been acting as of late, between the Blitzchung fiasco, their questionable handling of retail WoW, and now recently with the debacle of Warcraft 3 Reforged. There is simply too much going wrong with that company, and I refuse to support it financially any more then I already have.
Even if that wasn't the case, my experiences with Classic WoW are somewhat being hampered by the min/max culture that has developed over the years, where players seem to be more focused on reading up dozens of guides, installing dozens of addons, and doing whatever else to be as uninvolved and expedient with the game as possible, to the point where someone like me who'd rather play the game without assistance just gets left behind. I don't really see the point in optimizing a decade-and-a-half old pve focused game, or having dozens of addons that basically make the game play itself for you.

@Proxime Leaving aside all the Blizzard fiasco, BfA has been pretty underwhelming, especially after Legion. They promised a total war between the Alliance and the Horde and we only got boring repeatable content, and they burned their last three important lore characters in this expansion, yet they managed to make them feel so underwhelming in comparison to other expansion bosses.
Add the boring world quests and they rescuing only the worst part of Legion, the AP grind, and you find out that BfA is not what was promised. There was a reason why so many people jumped ship to Classic once it went live.

    • @neh1234
      @neh1234 4 года назад

@Proxime Classic simply aged terribly. For better or for worse you're comparing a game that had 15 years of gameplay improvements over it's pristine version.
Don't misunderstand, people didn't go to Classic for the raids, endgame content or QoL improvements. They were looking for a simpler time when the community was more cohesive and the world felt more alive, and according to this review Classic succeeded beautifully on that regard.
Reason why Classic's numbers are going down is that everyone who wanted the vanilla experience already got it, myself being one of them. We got to level 60, made friends, and got fond memories of the whole ordeal. After killing Ragnaros there was not that much to do anymore, and people who wanted Classic in the first place are those who are jaded of the hamster wheel that WoW is nowadays. I had my fun and I quit, fun here being the code word, which is honestly more than what I could say when infiltrating Suramar for the nth time.

  • @tickub

The leveling process can definitely be painful, and especially so in the 40s. But then again you chose one of the only classes capable of solo-ing even level-appropriate elite content and may have never felt the need to group up for all the elite quests at the tail end of every zone. I think what most people find best about WoW's leveling is discovering that '1+1>2' dynamic as early as within starting zones. Every class gives you a different window in how you view the game, perhaps you'll arrive at much different scores for at least the community/leveling portions had you picked a less independent class.

    • @cattysplat
      @cattysplat 4 года назад +2

I agree, unfortunately choosing to play hunter, especially with a tank pet, means your going to have an easy unchallenged time levelling solo unless you multipull. A big part of solo levelling in WoW classic is the danger of dying all the time, and having a tanky pet doubling your health bar with free damage plus instant ranged attacks and decent melee survivability along with feign death makes your chance to die to mobs incredibly low. Many other classes live and die on their gear and managing their cooldowns and mana/hp bar, melee especially risking their life facepulling and facetanking every fight, so they have incentive to gear up, manage their resources carefully and do anything to feel stronger just to survive dangerous fights, much of which a hunter especially beastmaster doesn't even have to bother with since ranged and pet is so strong.

First and foremost, love the videos, I appreciate all the explanations and reasoning you have behind your scoring but I have something to say in Regards to Onyxia.
Ony is one of the best designed, at the time, boss encounter in classic and here's why. Ony phase 1 only has 3 abilities to take heed of, a tail swipe (knock back that tends to aim you for the whelp cave), a fire breath (frontal cone that deals anywhere from 3k to almost 4k damage to all things infront of her that can almost oneshot undergeard or low health classes) and wing buffet which drops the tanks threat by 25% when hit.
Phase 2 has 2 main abilities a deep breathe which just means your taking too long, but the second and more important ability is her fireball which does some AoE damage but more importantly WIPES ALL THREAT from the highest threat target at the time of impact, This can not be resisted.
Phase 3 she lands, and basically adds an AoE fear to her rotation.
Now on your first few tries this might just seen like a bunch of random nonsense, it might feel like she just randomly targets things and there is nothing to done but hope your tanks can pick her up at some point throughout the fight. But in reality this is one of the most threat sensitive fights in the game. And changes based on how much threat your tanks can generate, how long she stays up in the air on phase 2, and how closely your dps watch their threat. Besides when she uses her abilities, there isn't a single random thing about this fight.
Yes I know I didnt mention cleave, whelps, or the fire-cracks but they are just raid damage as far as i am concerned.

Sad fact of it is, the core group of people who had striven for excellence in Warcraft games are gone. They jumped ship or they died or they retired. Mike Morhaime is just a number cruncher shareholder jockey now. Most of the team that made WOW Vanilla is gone, the head of blizzard is someone who joined WoW in TBC and really hated the way the game was built from its foundation and sought to restructure it. I think the spark that made wow great is gone from mmo's in general.
