We had them in the kitchen about 4 years ago - we live in an old house & there's a damp wall at the back with a window in the middle and we had them in the back left corner at the bottom. We had to empty everything out of the cupboard & throw it all out, then we had to take out the cupboards, we cleaned the wall & cupboards with mould & mildew cleaner, then tiled the wall behind. We then sprinkled & blew diatomaceous earth everywhere we could before putting the cupboards back. This stuff does work, it's made out of powdered sea shells (simply) and it lacerates & dries out the mites. Get the food grade version for kitchens - it's apparently used in all flour to prevent weevils & it's used in poultry mite powder.
Anyway, we put a grill in the cupboard kick board to give a bit of air circulation. We then sprinkled/blew some diatomaceous earth in the back of the cupboard before re-stocking. This has worked for 4 years & we still don't have mites on that side. Unfortunately we've now had an outbreak on the back right corner - we thought it was only a matter of time, as that corner is also damp. I've also not been as fastidious with cleaning out my cupboards this past year which hasn't helped. You just have to keep at it & leave a bit of time for the diatomaceous earth to work before cleaning it up & always leave a bit in unseen areas to keep them away. Hope this helps.

Weve just dealt with these. We had them in our kitchen and it turns out the epicentre of their invasion was in the back of a cupboard where we keep the dog leads, poo bags, treats etc. Where there was a few treats in the very bottom back corner that had gone mouldy. We dont go in there too often.
By the time we had seen them, there were lots of them in and around that cupboard, with patches of them very visible on dog leads, top of the cupboard door etc. They were also on most of the kitchen surfaces by this point by the time we had seen them, including tiled wall, other cupboard doors and cases, fish tank, kettle etc. Etc.
We emptied EVERYTHING out of the kitchen that wasn't screwed down and put it all in the shed out of the house.
We bagged up and threw away everything that we could, and also anything we could sacrifice that had a lot of them on.
We then wiped down the whole kitchen (surfaces, inside cupboards, doors, floor, window etc. Etc.) With white vinegar spray and kitchen roll, disposing of all used tissues to the outside bin. We did the whole kitchen 2 times right away, then waited over night. What we saw was a big reduction in the bugs, especially in the dog cupboard, but some were still present generally around the kitchen. So we wiped the whole kitchen again 2 times. This was over a period of 2 to 3 days, waiting between each time to see if they had gone away.
Generally after this we could see that we had got on top of things and they were going.
We then started to move all our stuff back in to the kitchen but each item was blasted off outside with the hose pipe, then washed properly in sink with warm water and washing up liquid. We even did this with sealed jars of food and packets (e.g. microwave rice) - if you have a dish washer this would be a big help at this point!
Oh, and remember everything we bagged and threw on the first day? Well, the outside bin was now full of them so we got a skip and emptied the rubbish bags from the bin into the skip too.
It's been a week now and there are still a very few of them on cupboard doors, but I think these are just residual ones from their life cycle of laying g eggs and hatching etc.
We were lucky that the source of the problem was just mouldy dog food which could be thrown away easily, and not black mould from damp or leaky pipes etc. But when we got rid of the source of the problem, the numbers dropped overnight, then it was just a case of dealing with the residual issue and clearing them off!

Every so often see 1 or 2 late at night which I promptly vanquish with professional karate but I'm a bit para about this flaring up again should I not completely unalive them. Firstly hi, I'm guessing you're here because you're currently dealing with these little terrors and are desperately looking for a way to tackle them, if not then this is a very weird video to just stumble across.
This is going to be a long comment so brace yourself but I really hope it helps you because I have just defeated these buggers and I know people who are dealing with them would appreciate this.
I will now proceed to give you a full guide on how to eliminate these mites including all product names and how to use them (all products used are readily available in the UK but I'm sure alternatives can be found world wide) please also note, this is not a 1 day job, you will need to do these steps over multiple days (it took us 6 days to completely get rid of them)
First of all find and remove the cause of these mites, mine were caused by an opened packet of Tortilla wraps that had somehow fallen behind the microwave and gone unnoticed. Then remove any infested item from your home (throw them out, do not move to another room to avoid spreading these buggers) I threw out my microwave, kettle, toaster and grill. Take everything out of cupboards and wash them throughly or just dispose of if reasonable.
Now start wiping down all the infested area with vinegar spray (I used STARDROPS WHITE VINEGAR SPRAY-purchased from asda). Leave for about 15 minutes and when your come you'll see a thousand more mites crawling around. Wipe everything down with vinegar once again.
Then dilute some DETTOL LIQUID DISINFECTANT (readily available in most UK supermarkets) and wipe down all areas again. Repeat these 2 steps atleast 4 times. This will get rid of most of the mites.
Now use a bleach spray (I used FLASH IMPECCABLE CLEAN BLEACH SPRAY- available in most UK supermarkets) and spray in all infested areas and leave to sit for an hour before coming back, wiping away and spraying the bleach again.
Next you will need to purchase ZERO IN ULTRA POWER PEST KILLER (available in B&Q, Screwfix, Tool station) and spray this all over the infested areas. Leave for a few hours and you'll come back to hundreds of dead mites. Clean them up and repeat all previous steps until there is no sign of them.
Also as your cleaning all the counters, cupboars etc spray the walls down with DETTOL MOULD AND MILDREW REMOVER to tackle the larger surface areas (this is optional but it gave me peace of mind)
Every time you complete one of the detailed cleaning cycles spray the entire place down with DETTOL 24 HR PROTECT MULTI SURFACE CLEANER and let it sit for a few hours.
Do this over 4 or 5 day and you should be mite free in no time.
I really hope this is helpful because when I was dealing with these mites I looked everywhere for how to get rid of them but there was no detailed explanations or products that would be useful.

Oh how I sympathize, I have these, or at least something very similar. Small white/off white tan coloured things probably 0.5mm or less. I can't make out whether they are some type of bird bite (what with discarded jackdaw nests near me) or a type of mold mite (theres no mold but I live in the lake district so it's a very damp climate), I moved in in May 2017 and first noticed them last november, so 5 months later, when they were on EVERYTHING, I wasn't looking for them so didnt notice anything until it had got really bad. 2 fumigations later, one shortly after I first saw them and another in March and they seemed to die off. But I think it was more to do with the temperatures. Whatever they are they didn't like the heat in the summer we've just had (it was 25-30C in my place between June and mid august). The last couple of months it has dropped a good 10-15C and I have noticed they have made a comeback, It seems they thrive when its colder and can't tolerate anything above 25 degrees celsius. Nevertheless after 11 months battling them and having to throw away so many possessions, I would estimate half of everything I own..... I have had enough and am moving out next week. Whatever they are, they are here to stay and were probably here long before me. I rent my place and it would take a lot of work to find the source and truly eradicate them and simply put after next week its the landlords problem not mine. It has nearly caused me to have a breakdown when the only way to distance yourself from them is to leave the house.
Suggestions for you: if they are in a single area keep killing them and see what gives, if that doesn't work scour the room they are in with a fine tooth comb, or the rest of the house. I used the torch on my phone and went through pretty much everything, they are easier to see on dark smooth surfaces, like computers, TV's, tabletops. It can take a while but it gives you an idea if it's spread. Thirdly if they are elsewhere you will need to have the property fumigated with a fog/mist with something like permethrin/cypermethrin/deltamethrin (don't ever breathe any of that stuff in). You can buy little smoke bombs with this stuff in but its most effective if you have a pest controller come round and do it. Good luck!

I don't know if you've figured anything out yet. I see it's been two years but on the off chance you're still looking for suggestions I figured I'd share my experiences.
I've fought with them multiple times in my life. All it takes is one little moist spot that's left unattended and these little bastards will dig right in and make themselves at home.
They are extremely resilient. Usually what it takes to get rid of them for good is completely eradicating the source of moisture (which could also be coming from the walls or ceiling if there's a leak anywhere).
Clear the area. Find the source. Dry it out completely. Use a fan or dehumidifier. It can take several days for them to die off completely. Rubbing alcohol is good. It doesn't kill them necessarily, but it's good for drying things out. If using isopropyl in excess make sure the area is well ventilated.

    • @TrainerSpyro
      @TrainerSpyro 4 года назад +2

No, they're not physically harmful unless you happen to be allergic. They can't bite or anything and as far as I know they aren't parasitic. I'm no entomologist, but I've had to deal with them many times in my life.
Finding and eliminating the source of the moisture is key. If they have a damp place to which they can retreat they'll just continue to multiply.

I have found these in one half of my mums’ kitchen, she recently passed away from cancer and she wasn’t able to do much in the house this year so things got forgotten about. there was a cupboard with some old dog treats and stuff in which had gone off, and some dog food next to the fridge. This was all next to the fridge and freezer. I think we found the main source which was a mix of all the dog food and mould/ dust behind the fridge etc. we had to throw out so much, lots of money has been thrown down the drain.
We also have spent 4 days this week cleaning the whole kitchen and getting rid of everything that isn’t able to be saved, etc. they don’t seem to like really hot or cold temperatures so some items I’ve put outside in the garden and the Cold overnight will kill most of them or freeze them.
But I’m still seeing them around the kitchen area now everything has been cleared out. I’ve seen them on my hoover which I’m so mad about, how am I meant to clean a hoover?! I can’t use water or anything on it, can I use diatomaceous earth on it and inside the hoover to kill them? I need to use my hoover, we only just recently bought it brand new. I’m not sure what to do apart from use diatomaceous earth in the areas to dry them out, they seem to hate that as it slices through their exoskeletons. Can you help me if you have any advice please?

    • @TrainerSpyro
      @TrainerSpyro 2 года назад +1

@@mylittlezoo743 Firstly I'd empty the Hoover (if you haven't already). If they're accumulating on the Hoover there could be a source of moister/ mould inside it for them.
That or the source could be in or near whenever the Hoover is being stored. These guys travel and will get on anything that's close to their nest.
It's super important to dry the area out as much as possible. As mentioned in my initial post you can use fans and/ or dehumidifiers.
If the area is visibly clean then it's entirely possible that there's mould, food or moisture inside the walls or floors.
That's obviously a much larger problem and may require a contractor (to replace walls/floors) or a plumber (to find the source of any potential leaks causing the mould).

    • @mylittlezoo743
      @mylittlezoo743 2 года назад +1

@@TrainerSpyro thank you, so the hoover isn’t the issue, it’s the under the stairs area in the kitchen which has the fridge and freezer stored underneath. That’s where the plastic drawers with the dog stuff were in, but we’ve cleared everything out now, gotten rid of all of the cupboards and dog stuff, etc. My sister came over to help me yesterday and she didn’t really listen to me when I said you can’t put items in the area where the mites are, and she did, and now my hoover has a few crawling on it 😅 I am really really hoping the source of it was just the big build up of old dust, some mould, all the old dog food/stuff, etc. I’m really hoping it’s nothing with the walls and pipes, because we’re in process of moving into this property now. I’ve cleared out everything the best I can- gotten rid of all food sources for them in the area, I can’t see anymore sources of moisture. I’ve just chucked down a load of diatomaceous earth for the night, it’s 2.15am here in the UK. Really hoping that will kill off any last stragglers and that there isn’t anything wrong with the floors/ walls. I’ll update again tomorrow if that’s alright!

Hi. Just a little update on what I did that appears to have worked so far. It may take a few weeks.
For the mite themselves, try to find the source. If their mostly in the kitchen It may be a food source or mould. Get rid of all food from cupboards and fridge and wash equipment/ cutlery etc... in hot water. Also vacuum carpets, sofas and bedding.
I also chucked out my infested toaster and kettle
The key thing is to BUY A DEHUMIDIFIER AND KEEP IT ON 24/7. The larger the better. Smaller DH won't do the job. I got mine for £100, then bought the other one 2nd hand online (should have done for both to save money). This played a key part in slowing down their breeding (as I think it dries them out). I bought 2 since my flat is very humid and kept it running straight for 3 weeks.
Use a steamer, and go over all surfaces before wiping dry. I bought a portable clothes steamer for £20 (which worked better than a house steamer) since it has a larger head and so covers a wider area. I used this to steam my leather and fabric sofa/ walls/ all surfaces cooker/ oven/ fridge/ microwave etc. You may also use this to steam your hair by running it over your head with a plastic cap over your hair. Be careful with the heat and make sure to hold at a distance.
If in the living room sprinkle a few drops of tea tree oil onto a cotton pad and wipe over remotes, TV (NOT THE SCREEN), TV stand, telephone, plugs and laptop. A few drops will go a long way and stop the mites from entering electric goods that they tend to crawl into.
Use a microcloth to wipe down the surfaces and wash repeatedly in hot water whilst doing this. The microcloth will leaves less lint on the surfaces and so it will be easier to see whether the numbers are going down since the cloth will leave less dust which looks like mite on the surfaces.
If you have black mould, use a mould remover bleach (Cilit bang) to get rid and wash the floors with hot water and bleach.
For the itching hair and skin, I think the trick is to kill the living mites but also attack the eggs by drying and killing them with heat. I used 2 applications of lice/ egg shampoo (since they are a type of mite). I also sprinkled a lot of tea tree oil (100%) throughout my hair and hairline at night and placed a plastic cap on my head with a night cap to seal it in and infuse the hair all over). I noticed that the itching stopped and so repeated this every couple of days. In addition I sprinkled drops of the tea tree oil onto my bed sheets and pillowcase. Another trick to try would be to open a peppermint/ green or black teabag and sprinkle the leafs into your hair if you find the oil to be too strong. I got this idea from a video where a man found that when checking 2 sacks of compost, the sack without the green tea leaves had mite and the sack with, had no infestation.
Steam face when steaming hair. Splash face with very warm water when experiencing itching.
Pour a few drops of tea tree oil into your face lotion and apply day and night.
When washing my hair I ran apple cider vinegar over my hair (since they don't like vinegar). I also used the warmest water temperature that I could manage over my head (however a better option may be to get your hair steamed).
Wash all bedding/ clothes etc.. on a 60 heat, extra rinse and dry in a tumble dryer. I also poured white vinegar in with my detergents).
I did all of these things, however a combination of some may be enough.
Hope the tips helps. RUclips helped me more than Pest Control.

    • @kathylyndsey316
      @kathylyndsey316 4 года назад +2

@@veenamurali Hi my dehumidifier has a tank that holds 5.5litres and it can draw between 10 and 20 litres of water a day depending on the room temperature.
Are you experiencing this problem. They can be a nightmare but the key thing is to
STEAM CLEAN the surfaces (I bought a garment steamer via ebay for £10, also I'd advice you to regularly rinse the rag your wiping the steam down with, in hot water (so as not to spread any live ones that may be caught in the fibre) Also use a toothbrush and bleach spray to get into the crevaces, corners and borders of kitchen surfaces as they tend to crawl from and hide in there. I spent more than I needed to, on surface cleaners and bleach as the steam appeared to do a much better job at keeping them at bay and was much quicker to steam every surface of a whole room (floors, doors, radiators, inside and outside fridge and cooker ceiling ing and surfaces). Also you steamer for sofa, bed, pillows, cushions etc...
DEHUMIDIFY TO HELP DRY THEM OUT AND DRY OUT THE SOURCE OF MOULD. KEEP THIS RUNNING 24/7. I did this for 3 weeks straight to slow down their breading. You can get a dehumidifier second hand online to save money (where are you based?)
THROW OUT ALL FOOD, AS THEY CAN CRAWL UNDER PACKAGE LABELS.
I threw out a lot of infested equipment to stop them spreading but if this is not an option,
      A) put your things out and steam clean them thoroughly before bringing them back into the house.
Buy large storage containers (similar to tupperware) that come with lids and place all. Crockery, the cutlery in with a mixture of white vinegar and water for a week.
Wash all garments on the hottest temp they can take, and hang things out on line for as long as you can that can't take heat
      Tumble dry garments
It sounds like a lot but just throw on some music and get steaming. Id say I saw a major difference after the 1st steam and they dwindled considerably by the 3rd of the day of steaming.
I hope this helps as they can be a nightmare but you will get rid of them.
Oh and one last tip, so if you find evidence of them on your remote, tv or laptop take a few drops of pure tea tree oil on a cotton pad and rub it over the surfaces and leave it for a few weeks. They don't seem to like tea tree and the thin layer will keep them at bay.

Best thing to do is to get a proper dehumidifier and keep it running 24/7. Drop the humidity below 60% and clean all mold from your house. Also vaccum like crazy every surface, inside of closets, storage boxes, etc. Do this every 2 days for at least a week. Eventually you will get a decrease in the population. I had a recent infestation after going away for 1 week in xmas (house was closed, no air circulating) and they reproduced like crazy. Pest control actually said they were not harmful and we just had to live with them... what??? Not on my watch.

I got the idea from relatives they put cinnamon in the kids sand box to keep sand spiders out. So I sprinkled cinnamon all in our cupboards and it worked it kept tiny brown mites out but we were still finding magots in pasta boxes. This may be repeated from other comments but I’ve read a LOT and am wondering how people got rid of grain mites. We had them from Aldi dog treats, they were in my dining room. Two days later I went in and they were EVERYWHERE. They spread to the living room. I’ve noticed them in 3 other rooms. Have 2 dehumidifiers going upstairs and downstairs. Living/dining room covered in diatomaceous earth and have used multiple applications of pesticides. I’m a nervous wreck and worried about transporting through house/car/other houses. How did people get rid of them, especially in rooms not the kitchen with carpets and any soft furnishings? I can’t see any food and have hoovered multiple times but they persist. THANKS FOR ANY HELP I APPRECIATE IT!!! :)

I think we completely cleared them except for the first room they were in. We’re just over 4 weeks in. I think they might have gone, but they could be in that stage or still as eggs. I’ve tried a few different pesticides and the DE. we left the DE down for 3 days and what a mess cleaning it up. I’m still cleaning it up after about 2 weeks. I’ve had the dehumidifier going every day. We haven’t used the room in this time either. There’s so much mixed advice out there. And we’ve tried so many methods I honestly couldn’t say what’s worked, it could be a combination of everything. But as it stands, I’m hoping they’ve gone, so I’m going to clean all the DE off our leather sofa tomorrow (we didn’t apply to it but it’s so fine it’s throughout the air) and clean the carpet while we’re not using it and go back in the end of this week. I’m hoping it’s over. I also scrubbed the whole of my downstairs to prevent spread and ensure there was no food. Thing is they are so small and can hide in any cracks it’s hard to know if they’ve gone. There’s a group of 10 of us on Facebook messenger who’ve all had the same issue from aldi dog food/treats. One of the girls went to the sun before and is trying to get aldi to take some responsibility so is hoping that she can get some awareness with so many of us. Did you contact aldi? @@katjakruglowa1006 I left it until I couldn’t find anything alive. I actually still have some of the powder left in the corners of the cupboard. (Hard to reach areas). I emptied the cupboard out and put the diatomaceous powder in an empty water bottle with a spout and puffed the powder through out the cupboard so it comes out in a plume and gets everywhere and I shut the cupboard and left it for a few weeks. (Just to make sure) Fingers crossed I’ve not had them back. I put everything in that cupboard in air tight containers so they get to food. I had them in my herbs and spices drawer so now keep them in their jars in clip seal bags. Hope that helps.

@@joycook1763 thank you, I am little relaxed now after your comment, I will use it in my kitchen tomorrow and leave it for a week or something. I hope it helps… what did you do to clean the powder? Vacuuming and then wet cleaning or something else?
