Thanks Robin. We all really appreciate and enjoy your videos
The first one I have watched, but come away with several tips. I watched as I'm sussing out the skeleton jig.
Bin doing this for nearly 40 years and I’m still learning pal! Love watching you!
Self adhesive furniture rubber pads work well on the three way clamps Robin! Nice doors btw, nice choice for the build.
You seem to have a joy of this craft in a way that I've taken for granted. Thanks for the reminder
As usual an absolute master class in carpentry. Great advice take your time and price accordingly 👍
I am currently learning the trade as a carpenter & joiner. I love watching your channel as well as scott brown carpentry it makes me want to expand my knowledge about the trade & i strive to become as good as you both. Two great channels with outstanding craftsmanship so keep up the good work & i look forward to seeing more content in the future 👌🔨🗜📐
Hi. A couple of felt pads stuck to those clamp ends would make them perfect.
I get rolls of rubber that are used for putting on vice jaws, quite cheap, handy to have in the tool box for things like that.
You beat me to it😅😅
they're the same colour (blue) as mine, IIRC they're silver line. and furniture self adhesive felt pads work fine given that these clamps aren't designed to apply huge amounts of force
was going to post that, self adhesive ones you get for the feet of tables etc woud be ideal and save any faffing about with cardboard
Hi Robin
Always watching your videos, learning that bit more off you ( perfect no bradawl marks with the clamps for new doors ) thanks again Robin/skill builder. TopMan,
Fellow chippy..

Hi Robin, great to see the old Yankee pump screwdriver still got mine from 40 years ago when I was an apprentice coach builder, infact still got the old mans and that is all brass must be an original anyway stay safe and by the way great job enjoyed watching.
What has Robin been doing this weekend? 02:05
😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🏌️
😂😂😂😂
I bet he’s got a jig for that
Beautiful work! Once again.
Amazing work and skill teachings. Hats off from the USA!
I bought the howdens hinge jig when it first came out about 20 yrs ago , , i did a job with hundreds of doors . Worth its weight in gold , its battered now , never knew about the skeleton will defo get that. I have the lock jig to . Ive been a carpenter 45 yrs , and came up against a lot of snobbery and anti jig sentiment when i first used it, glad Robin is using one . Great idea on the 3 way clamp . What about a speed clamp with a self made threaded hole it top with own rod pad and turning knob just a thought 🙂👍👍👍
I got some of those pump up lifter things after seeing Robin use them and they are brilliant, so cheap too, got mine in Lidls.
The first ones on the market were around £18.00 each but that game is over now.
Quality workmanship every time Robin
Those doors are stunning.
Top video Robin I’m ok at hanging doors but your tips should mean I can up my game, have you tried “Hinge Tite” screws? They have a extra wide thin thread and are way better than the ones that are normally included with the hinges.
Don’t need Netflix anymore, I just watch all your videos, very very enjoyable and instructive, your house looks amazing, can’t wait to see it finished 👌
Thanks to make the set up, routing, install in such even gradual pace, if I have your tools, I will do just as well after 3 mistakes filled doors. Thanks again.
Ths has made me chuckle a bit with using clamps on the door. I rang Trend regarding this same issue months ago with no joy. Thanks for another great video ! doors looks awesome!
I would love to get involved in something like this with Robin, I pick up something from just about every video and can tell he loves what he does and takes pride in every cut. I live not far from Capel and would happily give up a weekend to lend a hand. The house is looking awesome btw 👌
Ps. I met Roger once while on a loft conversion job in Reigate, top bloke 👍
Robin is the Man !
Like that idea brilliant! They are edge clamps designed to clamp kitchen units together then to push the fronts flush or when laminating timber edges on 👍
great work very good carpenter
Those doors are awesome
Honestly, I could watch Robin for days on end. I’m 20 years in the trade as a kitchen installer 2nd fixer and I’m still always picking up tips and learning from this legend.
Top Class workmanship
Dip tip of screws in wood glue before driving in. They never strip out. Same for fixing hinges for Kitchen Doors. How many Kitchen cupboard doors have you seen fall off when the screws strip out of the chipboard?
Bit of wood glue and that will never happen again.
A very nice doors,like a twins.
Good job, well done...
The problem with the Newer version of the Trend skeleton jig is the guide lock can work itself loose and the bradawls are needed to make sure they dont move as you route. I also have the older version you have Robin but it doesnt seem to happen on that one. I will have to try the 3 way clamps as I was using the 900mm Bessey clamps when i didnt want to mark the doors. With the corner chisel you are absolutely correct and the older they get the more the risk that the blade goes out of square.
Dude wow. That door match discovery was incredible
Great video!!
Excellent work, I’m not from the trade and find it all fascinating.
Absolute Legend 👊
Beautiful doors 👍🏻
Beautiful doors fitted by a true craftsman.
Such a tedious way if fitting doors. In Spain doors come complete with a frame attached. All hinges and latches are prefitted, all that needs to be done is screw up the frame and fit your chisen style of handle, fit the precut and mitred architrave ....job done in minutes.
Love the doors Robin. The dark walnut will look awesome against the white walls and trim! Nearly there with the build now. What's the plan for the kitchen?
I have a couple of trend skeleton jigs and noticed the same problem. The first one I bought the top gap plate was around 2mm which was ideal. They then changed the top plate with the later ones and made it thicker. You can counteract the thicker top plate by spinning it out of the way when you rout the door and position the jig so the door overhangs the jig by a mm or so.
Hi Robin. Great video. Have you thought about using those sticky felt pads made for furniture legs on your 3 way clamp. Thanks again mate
I agree with the clamp great improvising I'll never use a jig myself I cant bring myself to smash holes in pre finished work 😡 but what if the frame is pre finished with a rebate 😳 I tend to stick to my guide and just clean the edges up 🔨📐
Fantastic looking doors Robin! Love watching your Capel build taking shape...Any tips on how you persuade the mrs on spending £245 a door 🤔
Brilliant and very entertaining
Fair plat Rob I never saw those clamps before. I usually use the 900 clamps which can be awkward at times. I also change the shim on top of the jig I found the original too thick.
Top draw work love it
Not draws. Doors!
Absolutely brilliant. But if my boss saw me take so long to do a beautiful job like that I’d be history! 😏
Robin, why dont you router the lining before fitting it. You can quick clamp a jig straight to the jamb. If I have the option I router the hinge cutouts before I even assemble the lining. Also if possible Fit architrave to the lining before installing it. It's a production line approach and its rapid
An amazing joiner, brilliant for picking up tips. one small criticism would be those draw cords on his hoody should be tied up when using routers, bat drills etc
hi Robin , have same router ....if you worry about teraout chipout , treat yourself with spiral carbide bit (downcut) in this aplication ,dewalt has 2 collet 8mm those bits are bit more stiff and thus nicer to work with , in that moment i think scott+ sargeant in horsham has good ofers on good quality CMT bits
bestr regards Mark
Nice
Those self centring drills are way better than my cheap ones, are they branded? If so which brand? I'm on the brink of getting the skeleton jig, those clamps are such a good idea. Browsing ebay now ☺ Super informative, I've learned something, thanks.
Great video Robin, always nice to see a true craftman at work. Just a quick question, is there a correct way to mount the hinge? Should the plate with three knuckles (as opposed to two) go on the door or the frame?
2 knuckles on the door.Think of the 80,s band The Jam.They had 3 members-hence 2 in the door-3 in the jamb
Most to the post
Pukka doors bud!!
I use those clamps but I put some self adhesive felt pads from the pound shop on them
Great tip you are tradesman of the day bro
@@ukconstruction I got a pack of 48 Rolson Felt Furnature Pads (25mm x 4mm) from Amazon for about £3. They're great for sliding appliances in and out without marking the floor.
Robin Clevett 😊
Just have a question for you Robin. There are 3 different types of hinge jigs from Trend, (H/JIG/C), (H/JIG/A) and (HINGE/JIG). The 1st two come in 2 parts but the last one is one piece. Apart from that do they all do the same job?
Regarding router breaking out grain, worth mentioning to beginners that the first cut into the edge should be made lightly and from right to left, with router cutting in climb. This is direction of cut Robin demonstrated, but without comment.
I hang doors as pro finish carpenter in USA. The hinges we use on typical 1 3/4" doors are set in 1 1/2" from edge. The Trend Skeleton jig looks good, but if I understand the way it's set up, its presets only go to 30 mm. Would this jig be quick and reliable to set up for the 1 1/2" inset I often need? (For years I have used Porter Cable jig, which has suitable presets and flexibility achieved in a different manner. But I like the way the Trend hinge length is set up directly from the hinges in hand.)
Mitre fast small Velcro pads onto g clamp that tightens on door both sides works well either
Hi Robin...could you please advise me of the gap size of the Ebay clamps. There seems to be quite a few now and I want to get the right size. Many thanks.
Hi Could you add link in the discription to where you buy the tools in each video you use,
MDF for a door frame is a cheap craziness.
Can you use that hinge jig on rebated door casings?
Hi guys how would you attach skirting to block walls that have been sheeted with 38mm thermoboards including 1/2 inch slab and skimmed
Thank you for the video and advice I just want to ask you a question about hinge jig which hinge jig do you recommend Trend skeleton or (trend h/jig/A hinge jig) thanks
Glue 3 or 4 mmm cork to the 3 way clamp pads, cork sheeting is a great friend :)
Good idea. Where do you get yours, Ireland?
@@SkillBuilder just type cork gasket sheet in to google and it gives plenty options :)
Nice work, just curious why you don't router out hinges on liners before installing them?
I mention this in the door lining video that we have on Skillbuilder, simply put I could have done that but when I have done this before for clients they come along and then change the way the door hangs!! So it's a habit now to leave them until the client Mark's them up to say which way!!!
@@ukconstruction thanks for the reply makes sense but a customer changing there mind never ;^)
Hi. Another informative video, great stuff. I watched another vlogger in which it was stated that the industry standard for the top hinge is 4.5 inches to your 6 inches. Which is correct or does it matter?
I think it is tradition and was made to miss the top and bottom rail of the panelled doors
The thicker plate is when you use fire seal brushes . Please explain you didn't use this on your door linings ?
Because it isn’t required for building regulations in a non- commercial dwelling
Hi, what happens when you’re fitting veneer doors to existing frames and they need trimming down?
Plane the frame
Why not use a manual screwdriver for the hinges? Or a drill where you can sit the torque, instead of an impact drill(unless it has a low setting)?
Great video though! I love that corner chisel!
The impact driver has a setting for this kind of work, it is very precise, no impact.
Hi robin love your videos, real clear and concise talk through. What is the name of the instrument you are using at 12:04.
Kind regards
I use 2 drills instead of impact driver and drill. much more control
Is it fit Australia hinge size?
HAS ROGER RUN OUT OF TEA BAGS ROBIN,21:24 MINUTES OF VIDEO WITHOUT A CUPPA SHOCK HORROR
Great job as always. Although I find Pre finished doors can be time consuming it leaves for a very classy finished job. Just wondering how you deal with bevelling the leading edge. Unfortunately I find that sometimes it needs doing on the Pre finished doors even with a true frame.
I've not fitted a door yet, that didn't need a leading edge, never mind a door that fit exactly to a frame! with straight sides and square head.
How much do you allow for the gaps when making the door linings with mdd? As no leading edge applied with these pre finished doors?
Take the draw strings off your hoody bud .just in case
That’s the first thing I do when I’m getting a new hoodie. I have to wear a lanyard where I’m working and stick it straight in my pocket. Fancy getting that stuck in one of your power tools.
The leather handle or blue rubber one works for me
good video just a shame about the 20 adverts
Great vid I brought a makita hinge jig it was shit , came in pieces , I prefer to freehand on the router , you can if you try get the tap finish
Anyone recommend me one of those center drill bits. One that doesn't keep getting clogged up all the time
Trend make a nice set, but they all clog up a bit. You just have to give them a blow.
Where did you get your doors from ?
XL Joinery Bradford
Block of solid beeswax instead of sticky tallow m8 fits in the pocket and reduces heating friction, and resistance breakage by a country mile especially on removing long screws!!! Remember hot rosin in wood is hot glue!!!!
Nice tip Thomas many thanks
Better to use ready made door jams with hinges and pre installed lock case and stops
Would like to have the chance to run the rule over it and to see how it fitted it after washing it for 15 minutes. 😰
Did I miss the painting episode? Was it sprayed?
Hi where did you manage to find the clamps for the jig Robin? Great video
Screwfix has them
@@SkillBuilder thanks for that 👍
Those 36v batteries are quite heavy, don't want to say too heavy for this type of job. Other than that great video perfect job
What stone are you using to sharpen up with , I was brought up on Indian oil stones , I've never took to the diamond stones don't no why
Hi David, I use a diamond stone and it's great, I then finish the hone with a leather strop
Don,t you make a litle bevel on the closing site of the door?
Robin I thought you would have used the round corner hinges to me as a preference they look better and saves time with the corner chisel but I don't want to ask a granny how to suck eggs!
Where did they buy those dark grained doors?
XL Joinery
I havent seen one of those Yankee screwdrivers for years! As far as tell them they cant have it finished when they want, dont be so abrupt! Always use finnesse and say, "sorry madam, you cant put a stop watch on a craftsman"! 😉
Why not use some furniture cushions on the ends instead of cardboard, they are double sided sticky as well
good idea
Why don’t you rout out the hinges before you assemble and fit the lining ? You can do all the routing standing up that way ,as my old foreman said , let the work come to you not the other way around , just saying
👍
How much for that blue loo roll?
Limited edition for royalty
to much back joint dangerous for little fingers
💙👊😎
Nice Eaton DB in the electrical cupboard, you got 3 phase at this place?
Doors?, look like bars of chocolate
I'm one of those chippies that think they pretty good at all aspects of carpentry.
Fairplay Robin, every video i learn just a little bit more .
Well done squire 👏
"take your time enjoy your craft" love that, so true
I just wish it was true in the real world 🤦♂️ of site carpentery
I do just that but i find i loose alot of jobs because of it. People want stuff done fast and cheap.
