    Just like to say a big thanks for creating this video. I just bought the skeleton jig to hang 12 solid oak doors myself in my own home. Like you I didn’t want to use the bradawls on the doors and was wondering about clamping the jig to the door. Seeing and hearing about this method has given me the confidence to do just that, although I’ll have to lift the doors from the floor to accommodate my long clamps. I’ll also look to make a thinner end stop like you have. Everything else you mentioned also confirms what I was already thinking.
    My only worry is that I need to cut a few mm of the bottom of a couple of the doors and want to do it without any tear out. I do have the router and I do have a cheap mini track saw I’ve never used. Guess I could practice on an old door and see what works best.
    Thanks again.

    I bought the howdens hinge jig when it first came out about 20 yrs ago , , i did a job with hundreds of doors . Worth its weight in gold , its battered now , never knew about the skeleton will defo get that. I have the lock jig to . Ive been a carpenter 45 yrs , and came up against a lot of snobbery and anti jig sentiment when i first used it, glad Robin is using one . Great idea on the 3 way clamp . What about a speed clamp with a self made threaded hole it top with own rod pad and turning knob just a thought 🙂👍👍👍

Some people just don't understand that hanging doors perfectly to our anal standards takes time especially with special does such as those!! Especially when fitting in to an old, completely bent out of shape/square casing where it can take well over an hour to shape the door. I shall look in to those walnut doors for my own house!! 👍🙂

    Dip tip of screws in wood glue before driving in. They never strip out. Same for fixing hinges for Kitchen Doors. How many Kitchen cupboard doors have you seen fall off when the screws strip out of the chipboard?
    Bit of wood glue and that will never happen again.

    A couple or three ideas for your corner chisel comments. 1) buy a fancy blade router that can cut square corners. - don't quite understand how, but it works. 2) get a piece of 3 inch plate, cut a space in corner for chisel to fit and tack it in. hold the plate into frame to square it with door before hitting chisel. 3) get hinges with rounded corners so corner chisel is redundant.

    Instead of tallow, a great thing for driving screws easier is beeswax. I have a little block I push the tip of screw into and it works brilliantly. Also great for rubbing on the sole of your plane, glides so much smoother.

    • @whitevanman8703
      @whitevanman8703 4 года назад

      @@dielauwen I always ask for extra screws from whoever supplies the hinges because if you hang twenty doors you are bound to muller 2 or 3. Either that or use different screws on the last and least important door.

    • @chippyminton8711

      Many of the older chippies I worked with used to have an old tobacco tin that was filled with wadding wrapped on cotton cloth and fitted inside and then soaked with meths I think. They then pulled the base of the plane backwards over the cloth to remove resin build up, the result was a plane that glides over the wood with ease making life much easier.

    The problem with the Newer version of the Trend skeleton jig is the guide lock can work itself loose and the bradawls are needed to make sure they dont move as you route. I also have the older version you have Robin but it doesnt seem to happen on that one. I will have to try the 3 way clamps as I was using the 900mm Bessey clamps when i didnt want to mark the doors. With the corner chisel you are absolutely correct and the older they get the more the risk that the blade goes out of square.

  • @stevehallam6495
    @stevehallam6495 3 года назад

    I have a couple of trend skeleton jigs and noticed the same problem. The first one I bought the top gap plate was around 2mm which was ideal. They then changed the top plate with the later ones and made it thicker. You can counteract the thicker top plate by spinning it out of the way when you rout the door and position the jig so the door overhangs the jig by a mm or so.
